“I Gotta Do A Better Job”

October 20th, 2022

Byron Leftwich

Offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich was hit with a question today about Bucs-fan piñata Luke Goedeke.

The rookie left guard had a very rough outing in Pittsburgh on Sunday, and part of that likely was due to him being overmatched 1-on-1 against Steelers veteran Pro Bowler Cam Heyward.

Leftwich was asked about Goedeke often being left to fare without help from a running back, etc.

Interesting to Joe, Leftwich didn’t flinch or reject the premise of the question. Leftwich simply said it’s on him.

“I gotta do a better job of helping [Goedeke] out in those situations. Obviously it wasn’t that simple, but I just gotta do a better job of helping him out,” Leftwich said. “That’s really what it comes down to.”

Joe agrees with Leftwich, but Joe also isn’t pinning the loss on Goedeke. In fact, it was an all-phases loss: defense, offense, special teams and coaching.

Joe heartily expects a bounce-back game from Goedeke and Leftwich on Sunday in Charlotte.

As they say, “Time cures everything”. Focus on the fundamentals, and the rest will follow.

  2. robert Says:

so, now he is HELPING Goedke out by not being a nuckle dragger with zero intellect or play calling abilities. this coaching staff keeps getting more classy.

  3. Davenport Says:

Thats an understatement. Leftwich is in over his head. Life as BA’s puppet was so easy.

  4. robert Says:

Robert heartily expects a bounce-back game from Goedeke and Brady on Sunday in Charlotte….about mid way into the 2nd quarter when you see Brady throw away the play calls on his arm.

  5. robert Says:

dude sure can make some SHRIMP though!

  6. Miller5252 Says:

[Leftwich was grilled by many other reporters today like Joe has never seen. Joe never said he would go after Leftwich because that is unethical but Joe did say he would be here today and Joe was. Interestingly one of the themes of the questions was predictable play-calling. Joe asked Leftwich about that back in 2019 and it didn’t go over well at all. Joe’s glad others are (finally) seeing the light. Ira was not at today’s presser. Unexcused absence! — Joe]

  7. Beeej Says:

I’m sure the Bucs had zero.zero plans to start Goedeke this year, or next year. Not fair to the kid either, but they have no other choice until Jensen gets back

  8. Architek Says:

Man this guy is driving me crazy with his coach speak!

He literally says nothing and offers up nothing material.

BTW, his playcalling on Sunday’s reflect that sediment.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Gotta do a better job.

    Followup question……When?

Finally, Leftwich says something we can all agree with.

  10. Destinjohnny Says:

    Wonder why Jason drafted him???
Ingram from lsu went right behind him.
Dude was a monster in the sec and it’s carried over to the bigs.
Didn’t get it then don’t get it now

  11. LVMYBUCS Says:

Only thing he can do better is pack his suitcase.

  12. Bucamania Says:

Sure seems like the same offensive game plan every week with similar results. You’d think the level of execution would be higher.

  13. Miller5252 Says:

Wrong choice of words on my part. I didn’t think Lee and Ira was going to go after Lefty, but just as you posted, ask the tough questions about the play calling and his thoughts behind of how he handled the Steelers game. Not expecting you all going full crazy on coaches. 🤣

  14. Goatfarmer Says:

The brain dead boob cannot be trusted to do anything competent. Promote him to an office kid and give BA the OC job. Now.

  15. Miller5252 Says:

Or going full Antonio Brown on coaches

  16. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

Whenever he accidentally runs a play that works, he needs to go back to it once in a while.

  17. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Ira was not at today’s presser. Unexcused absence!’

Did you just throw The Sage under the bus Joe? And the wheels go round and round. Thump thump.

  18. tampabuscsbro Says:

I mean, if any of us didn’t get better at our jobs in 2 years and now has one of the worst performing units. We would lose our jobs.

The same needs to happen for Byron.

  19. Pewter Power Says:

Damn leftwich where have I heard that before. Can’t remember if it’s after every blow out of before getting benched by the team your coaching

  20. Your Mom Says:

Among a dozen other things, if they didn’t have a colossal mess up in special teams, they would have won.

  21. Crickett Baker Says:

Well, BA always said he did not do much in offense. He pretty much left that up to Brady and Left. He repeated it several times. But he DID make a big deal of competition for sacks and interceptions. He almost made it a contest to motivate players. I do not see Todd doing this, at all. They may need something more to motivate them besides winning. I know that sounds weird but I think BA did other motivational things.

  22. D-Rok Says:

    Your Mom,

On the Ira podcast that dropped today, they shared that the Steelers guy who had that 89-yard return had the 5th fastest MPH in the league so far this year. So he was a burner.

Also, they pointed out that since Jamel Dean was 5 yards behind the guy, yet still caught him, they wondered just how fast Dean is?

NextGen Stats, we (at least I) wanna know Dean’s speed on that play.

But yes, that was a huge negative play for us.

  23. BucU Says:

This maroon should be fired IMMEDIATELY after that pathetic press conference.

  24. Listnfrmafar Says:

Deflection 101, subtle way of BL blaming Goedeke for the loss. What a dic.

    #firehisarseNOW

  25. SlyPirate Says:

    WE’RE STILL TALKING ABOUT GOEDEKE

When you’re talking about a OL it means they SUCK! We talk about Goedeke every day.

  26. LakelandSteve Says:

For some reason we continually try to run to the left side when we have to real good run blockers on the right. Instead of running away from the Steelers strength we ran right at it. That is just pure stupidity.

  27. MadMax Says:

Too late bro…your elevator only goes so far up, time for it to go down 1 level where you get off and leave….Adios!

  28. firethecannons Says:

This years Bucs team is not capable of pulling off a win against any team without maximum preparation.

  29. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

    @MadMax

I’ve seen you ask a couple times about searching the archives for your old comments. The site’s search engine does not scan comments. That’s why you can’t find them. Use Duck Duck Go and plug in “JoeBucsFan”, “MadMax”, and then key word for subject matter or player/coach.

The Realist taught me this. 😁

  30. MadMax Says:

@DRok, yes Dean was burning…but it had more to do with the angle the runner took though, while Dean held his line.

  31. Buccos Says:

If you want to pin that loss on someone, pin it on the QB. He missed practice, missed the team flight, looked out of sync all day and threw to the wrong receivers. He targeted Evan’s 4 times I think. Brady gets all of the accolades, let him take this one to the chin.

  32. ClwJB Says:

Took 6 weeks to figure out he needs help?

I know this is the new NFL and all that but maybe a two back set would help

It’s not like we have TE’s anyway

KO should be a FB and we should be smashing people

The play action becomes immediately better

Why does a pee wee coach have to help a guy making millions???

  33. Hodad Says:

    Help him to the bench.

  34. BUCkleup Says:

Only way our playcalling is worse is if Biden grabs the headset

  35. Browsing from DC Says:

I realize that Brady runs like his feet are encased in cement, but if Goedeke can’t get it done on his side, whatever happened to designed roll outs and draw plays? You don’t have to be Usain Bolt to roll a few steps right or left. Brady can do more than drop straight back every snap.

And Lenny racked up big yards against Dallas week 1 with Ko as a lead blocker. Where did that concept go? Lenny and Ko in the backfield, keep one in to pass pro and let the other leak out into a short route/hot read.

Brady can see if they stack the box or not with a 2 back set. If they don’t, hand it off. If they do, there’s bound to be open real estate in the short middle. It’s not like they haven’t done this before. Did BA copyright all of his plays so BL can’t use them now or face legal action? Good grief. Lol

  36. 2022 Fire the Cannons Says:

Byron begon….. Stupid is as Stupid do does..m

  37. Jack dos Santos Says:

play calling is very drab and generic. We can’t even block on a screen pass. PATHETIC!!!

  38. SPARKY Says:

I’ve been reading this stuff for 5 days, you guys don’t deserve Tom Brady.

  39. captivajim Says:

    same speal-which is getting old……

  40. richbucsfan Says:

All this means is every game plan will be the same as the Steelers’. NFL coaches have the most incredible penchant for repeating their ego-driven stupidity. This I know, the fan base is turning away from this team as it is obviou the HC & OC are hapless.

  41. MadMax Says:

    @Hunter Awesome! thanks bud.

  42. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

    👍

  43. Lakeland Steve Says:

It wasn’t all Goedeke. I saw Hainsey beat on a reach block at the goal line and the guy that beat him stuffed Fournette for a two yard loss. In fact Goedeke blocked well on that play and if Hainsey didn’t get beat Fournette might have scored.
