Eight Takeaways From Sunday’s NFL Action

October 30th, 2022

*The Rams are a bad 3-4 team heading across the country to play the 3-5 Bucs next Sunday. The 49ers (4-4) blew them out in Los Angeles — the same 49ers team that was spanked by the NFC South-leading Falcons a couple of weeks ago.

*Those Falcons are a fast and physical offense when healthy with Kyle Pitts, rookie Drake London, Marcus Mariota and undrafted veteran receiver speedster Demiere Byrd. Today was the second time Joe has seen a player get injured trying to tackle Pitts.

*It’s obvious to Joe that the Seahawks with Geno Smith at quarterback – Geno Smith! – will be favored against the Bucs in Germany in two weeks. Who would have believed that in August?

*Speaking of Bucs-related disbelief, the Washington Commandos are 4-4 in a division much better than the NFC South.

*Andy Dalton got the start in New Orleans today with Jameis Winston fully healthy. It’s Dalton’s job for certain now after the Saints shut out the Raiders and Dalton did a great job managing the lead. The Saints had a 10-minute edge in time of possession.

*The Bucs could do a lot worse than Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback next season if the Tom Brady era ends.

*Joe wonders what all the fans and pundits who thought Dan Campbell would be great with the Lions because he gets emotional and was fun on Hard Knocks think? Sean Payton’s coaching tree needs fertilizer.

*Hard to believe the Vikings got eight-time Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Peterson to return for $4 million in a free agent deal. Dude now has 10 passes defensed as a starter. That’s as many as Jamel Dean, Carlton Davis and Sean Murphy-Bunting combined.

  1. unbelievable Says:

    Lotta bad football this year.

    Bucs will be playoff spectators.

  2. Bob Says:

Jason Licht seems to have disappeared
. No opinions of his these days showing up anywhere, or Bruce Arians. Would like to know what they think about this stuff right now

  3. Lamarcus Says:

But im actually happy with Dean. That dude actually improved and looks as good as any corner in the league. Big props!! Major improvement

  4. mark2001 Says:

Jameis. Maybe you can be Mariota’s backup in ATL next year.

  5. unbelievable Says:

    Dean is our best corner

  6. DBS Says:

The way this season is going the era will end. We will get a high draft pick for sure. One news caster here in Tallassee described the Bucs perfectly. “Total Shambles”.

  7. Buczilla Says:

I don’t think that the falcons are more talented than us, but I envy them regardless since they are fighting their butts off for their coach. Dalton starting over Jameis doesn’t surprise me, but it’s not like he’s anything better than a low tier starter anyways.

I’d be thrilled to get Jimmy G next year as long as we draft a qb in the first round. According to my impeccable research (lol, not) there are a bunch of good qb’s coming out this year. This season has been depressing as hell and can’t be over soon enough.

  8. Tye Says:

Yes, the Rams, Commanders and Seahawk situation is rather strange…

Falcons might be the surprise team this year… MIGHT!

Saints probably should have started Dalton from the beginning of this Season but glad they didn’t…(most of us KNEW Winston would not last)..

Jimmy G would be a welcome surprise at qb for the Bucs next season…

Dan Campbell and the Vikings thing, Could NOT care less!

  9. Bobby M. Says:

Dan Campbell is the Jameis Winston of coaching….lots of rah-rah but doesn’t back it up with results. These guys are professionals, the best of the best, they measure on results. You don’t deliver that, the players will tune you out, start freelancing, play uninspired…..kind of like we’re seeing with Bowles and the Bucs. Bowles failed miserably in NY, he’s never ran a consistently winning team. Arians has and Arians delivered. Bowles hasn’t and he’s not delivering now….players recognize it and it changes the morale and focus.

  10. Redeemer Says:

Joe, I don’t know anyone who thought Dan Campbell would be good. He’s a meathead joke of a head coach. Almost a caricature of a coach. Josh McDaniels should’ve never left the Patriots. You want nothing to do with Jimmy G. He’s a fragile, big game mistake waiting to happen. He’s been surrounded by superior talent, and has squat to show for it. Go listen to Edelman about him.

  11. Francisco Guzman Says:

Unless someone gets fired before the rams game i see an L next week. This team stopped playing for this coaching staff.

  12. Darin Says:

Dan Campbell isn’t the lions problem on defense. They need a defensive coordinator unlike Mike Smith.

  13. Caleb Says:

Please no to Gorappolo. Especially with this offense and coaching.

  14. Beeej Says:

I remember after we won the ’03 Super Bowl…..we utterly wrecked 2 of the first 3 teams, THEN we lost that Monday night OT game to the Colts, and our season was over, ended up 7-9….you could feel the gloom from the team all season. That’s what THIS season feels like

  15. DoooshLaRue Says:

    How drunk are you Joe?
    Typos and Jimmy G?

  16. Redeemer Says:

Darin, the Lions have a Jared Goff problem. When he was with the Rams, The guy got to a Superbowl with a tremendous defense, and someone telling him what to do in his headset.

  17. Ab Says:

The Rams will dismantle the Bucs next week, on both sides of the ball

  18. BrianBucs Says:

Saints coaching staff is smart enough to keep Jay-Miss on the bench where he belongs

  19. EEK Says:

Nothing like playing the Bucs as a get right game.

    Feeling grim.

  20. JimmyJack Says:

Im not jumping off the ship. I’ll stay on this sucka by my lonesome if I gotta.

Todd the Godd is gonna get this thing turned around. Byron gonna bring back the biscuit offense and get that side of the ball pumping to.

Start firing everybody and this thing gonna go further south……..This same fanbase that is calling for Byron head in our SB year. They did the same when we was top offense in football.

Im in Byrons corner. Nice long week before the Rams. He got this!!
    GO BUCS!!

  21. August 1976 Buc Says:

It is actually the Bucs are the homecoming opponent for the Seahawks in Germany, Times have certainly changed. Not fun being the fire hydrant on the corner of the NFC south. The Anits are a better team, that is just not right, but it is.

Ground Control to Major Tom, if you do not play better, then there is no chance buddy of winning games, with this suspect defense that is masquerading as the Bucs D.

  22. Winny Testaverde Says:

DJ Jazzy Moore…keep your helmet on…good Lord! And Special Eddy Piniero…you scared little tulip…you no doubt just kicked your final football in the NFL. I preferred Carolina winning. Arthur Smith complains non-stop…spoiled son of the CEO of FedEx.

  23. BigMacAttack Says:

I don’t see the Bucs beating any team at this point. I think a few college teams could beat the Bucs. Tom Brady throws half of his passes in the dirt.

  24. SlyPirate Says:

Bob … “Jason Licht seems to have disappeared”

A little surprised Joe hasn’t written an article on this.

Licht onboarded this entire team and hired/promoted the entire coaching staff. To see it blow up when he thought they were primed for a SB is tough. Even tougher is he has to figure out what to do next. Some of those decisions will be removing guys that won him a SB. He can’t start offering his thoughts because he can’t show his cards until a plan is completely thought out. The fact he isn’t talking may be a good sign.

  25. NYbucsfan Says:

I can’t believe no one has been fired yet!!

  26. Jack Sparrow Says:

Weird season. Can’t believe Brady (GOAT) and Rodgers (BOAT) are sitting in a 3-5 record

  27. Cchead Says:

    Ken Dorsey next head coach

  28. Mike S Says:

Bucs will have a top 5 draft pick next season. This coaching staff is abysmal.

  29. Mike S Says:

    STOP SHILLING FOR JIMMY G

  30. DBS Says:

One thing is guaranteed. This will not be a place free agents want to come to now.

  31. D-Rome Says:

Raiders made a mistake firing Gruden and made a mistake by hiring McDaniels over Rich Bissacia. Bill Belichick’s assistants never succeed away from Belichick.

Jameis is where I said he would be in the beginning of the season. On the bench by the halfway point. Let me guess, he needs another year. Career backup.

  32. Redeemer Says:

The AFC title game will be probably be the superbowl. I can’t see anyone stopping buffalo. Maybe KC. As much as I don’t believe in Jimmy G., I think the 49ers have the defense in the NFC. The last team the eagles want to play is Brady’s. From a pure scheme standpoint, I like the bucs. I’m still praying for a home wild card win, then watching the maestro, one last time in the divisional round. Best weekend in sports

  33. snookman Says:

man its like history is repeating itself.
2002 team wins superbowl……….next year wide receiver is removed from team during season, Team underachieves, run is over………the lost decade

2020 teams wins the superbowl, follows it with a great season but ends with wide receiver removed from team, team underachieves, run over………

its so hard to be mad though………we got the rings. its do damn hard to win a championship in sports so if this is the tax we have to pay…………ill gladley pay it for what happend in 2020

  34. Tdtb Says:

Trade Brady for Jimmy G now. It gives Brady a graceful exit and a chance at a SB. Allows the Bucs to start cleaning house now. As long as Brady is here they won’t do it…which will prolong the suck.

  35. Redeemer Says:

D-Rome coming in hot! The McDaniels thing confuses me. He’s an excellent offensive coach. Should’ve never left Bill. He probably could have taken over in 4/5 years. Josh had a hard time moving his kids to Vegas. He also knew this was his last chance to step out of his masters shadow. We forget because they make millions, they’re just human a holes like us all.

  36. Yucs2Bucs Says:

Bills and Philly ( I think ) Super Bowl, but no one beats the Bills this year !! Awesome team like KC, but sad that we ruined the future of this organization for one ring !!! Effen stinks and the next decade is going to be atrocious

  37. Redeemer Says:

Tdtb, why not trade for Jimmy to backup Brady in Tampa. It worked out pretty well when Bill tried it.

  38. Pelsbuc61 Says:

I’ve always thought GM Licht was atrocious. He traded the 7th pick to the Bills and they got Josh Alllen. We got quitter Vea. Nuff said.

  39. Yucs2Bucs Says:

@redeemer because we have the G boys as owners and Licht as the GM. They ruined the greatest soccer dynasty and besides 2 rings in 22 years have this organization on the path of destruction again. Only reason they landed Brady is because the Dolphins wanted to wait. It only took 10 years to become relevant again and now with over priced and out of shape FA like Shaq and others the financial situation isn’t idea. I would trade Evans, Vea, White, Smith, Jensen, LVD, Carlton and Mike Edwards and others ASAP and only keep Whirfs, Winfield, and sign Dean and make the rebuild !!!

  40. T REX Says:

    No one is getting fired.

That info has already been released

  41. JimmyJack Says:

I hung myself out to dry with this team for 5 years with Winston. A few of yall called me a hater but I never not rooted for the kid or wished him off the team.

I thought he would turn his career around and I sunk with the ship. 5 years!!!!

If I can hang for 5 years with Jamies there aint no way Im letting 5 losses send me to the Skyway……….not with this group.

So yall throw in your towles…..I guarantee each one of you will be back if we rattle off 6 straight wins. 20-17 Bucs WIN.

  42. Francisco Guzman Says:

Jack Sparrow i think rodgers has more of an excuse. He has no weapons. This bucs offense struggling is bizarre but i think to myself they only have two consistent option. They’re not getting much from the 3ed wideout or even tight end.

  43. Francisco Guzman Says:

T REX if that’s the case then start trading players for picks before the deadline. There’s no way this season will be turned around with the goof balls on the sidelines. This likely will be bowles’s last opportunity as a head coach. The guy’s not a head coach.

  44. Craig Says:

If Brady can become a Phoenix and drag his butt out of the ashes of his game the Bucs could still make a dent in the playoffs.

His play has been off and I can’t see it lasting too long.

The best defense is an offense that can sustain drives. Brady was a master at that, once upon a time, he has to grab that back.

The O-line isn’t that bad, considering the play call. They will respond if Brady puts hie game in order.

There is no replacing Barrett. He is special. in more ways than pass rush.

I am glad to see a healthy Jameis sitting, his talents did make it in the NFL, because he can’t sustain drives.

The Rams are screwed for years, they traded all of their high draft picks for a few more years and are set for a bigger fail than this season.

Trask will be better than some of you want him to be.

  45. Doc Says:

Last i checked Winston is not on this team. Quit blaming Winston for this sorry Quarterback play on this team. Brady has destroyed this team, just like he tried to do in New England before they kicked him to the curve.

  46. DBS Says:

Looks like Doc can’t read. Nobody is blaming Jameis for what is happening on this team right now.

  47. JimmyJack Says:

Guzman agree its bizarre. I will admitt through my optimism I am worried there are major internal problems here holding us back…….thats when it gets personal, surely at time irreconcilable.

Blaming the coaching has merit. They have done a poor job but their not this bad…………Come on, Byron coached a SB offense, that doesnt just happen………Todd the Godd had a Ryan Fitxmagic team playing better ball then this for crying out loud.

I will agree coaches must deserve the brunt of the blame. But theres no way something goes this far rotten and its just one guy, or two guys. Just dont add up……….like you said bizarre

  48. JimmyJack Says:

Craig come on dude. Shaq is not special as a passrusher.

Special shows up last year in that Big Game.

If ya wanna say he was special, ok your right.

  49. Howard Cosell Says:

It’s sad, (so sad) so sad
    It’s a sad, sad situation
And it’s getting more and more absurd
It’s sad, (so sad) so sad
Why can’t we talk it over?
    Oh, it seems to me
That sorry seems to be the hardest word

  50. Mike Johnson Says:

If our Bucs do not improve, The Falcons win this division going away. They looked good today. I watched that game. I’m only seeing maybe 4 wins when I look at the schedule for us. I am not optimistic. No hiding in this NFl. You are what your record says you are.

  51. SB Says:

Where are all of the Jay Miss nuthuggers right now?

  52. adam from ny Says:

i saw the panthers and falcons play very very hard today…

and new coach dennis allen yanked jamies a bit prematurely imho…they won’t go anywhere with dalton…

that’s all i have to say on this given sunday

  53. Adrnagy Says:

That’s what I’m saying. We win division. We are in playoffs. Once In … you never know.

  54. steele Says:

Please. Please. Do not pray for Jimmy G to come to Tampa. Dude is the same jittery panicky pick/fumble-at-first-sign-of-real-pressure mediocrity that he has always been.

The reason the 49ers have punked the Rams twice is called coaching. Period. Shanahan has figured out how to attack those fools, and he has the weapons and depth to do it, especially an energetic defense, and, hello, a creative offense with a new Swiss army knife in McCaffrey. Jimmy G just has to manage and try to minimize mistakes, the same way Alex Smith did. Put Tom Brady on this 49ers team, and it would be blinding dominance, straight to the SB.

What losing to 49ers twice will do is piss of the Rams, who will be especially geared to destroy the Bucs to salvage their season. They are up and down. Unlike the Bucs, who have just been down since wk 1.

  55. Ed Says:

Do or die for the Bucs next game up with Rams. If they don’t hustle and put out same product they have in their last 3 home games, they will have completely lost their fanbase.

Win/loss is what coaching is judged on since NFL is a business and bad teams are bad for business. Right now the Bucs are a very bad team. They’ve hit bottom, being dominated by teams racked with injuries. The team has been disorganized and “bored” as White said. Watching them is boring.

They need to get back into it. Show up prepared for what the Rams do and have a gameplan for once. Bowles has to shake things up, the team still has a good core of players, just put out on the field or shut up.

  56. beano Says:

“The Bucs could do a lot worse than Jimmy Garoppolo”

There goes Joe again, terrified of Trask playing with the starting offense and making Joe and the Haters look like idiots for bashing Trask without basis since he was drafted.

When Joe wrote the other day about Trask fans wearing orange and blue and playing with Tim Tebow dolls, Joe was actually masking his days wearing garnet and gold and playing with Jameis Winston dolls. Yup.

  57. Letsbucinggo Says:

This team has a lot more issues than million dollar QBs. Bradys here and this team still looks like crap. Licht is going to trash this team.

  58. DoooshLaRue Says:

    SB Says:
    October 31st, 2022 at 12:12 am
Where are all of the Jay Miss nuthuggers right now?
    __________

Let us all bow our heads and remember the Nuthuggers we’ve lost over the last couple of years:

    ndog
    Tmaxcon
    webster
    DB55

……and of course everyone’s favorite Fancy Man, Sir Rodney Munch…. well, unfortunately we didn’t lose him, but anywho…..he has unheralded football knowledge and is pro ready.

Is it safe to assume that the entire Saints organization is R a cist now?

  59. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Yes, and WTF Is Jason Licht these days, now that we are losing ?
Not a sound from him, in ages!
It is time for us to start over, but I just do not see the next Josh Allen of Patrick Mahommes in this draft.
    Do you ?

  60. Deeez NATZ Says:

Jameis Winston is all talk and no action.Piece of GARBAGE…

  61. beano Says:

“Craig Says: Trask will be better than some of you want him to be.”

100%. Lots of losers here have years invested in bashing Trask without any basis. They’re terrified of what he might do with the starting offense.

  62. Letsbucinggo Says:

With this O-line Jimmy G. would not last one game. He would be on the IR list the rest of the year.

  63. Letsbucinggo Says:

Rams are a bad team but beat Carolina and Atlanta!

  64. Mjoy Says:

As long as Devin White is on the field, the defensive is in trouble. He is and has been extremely overrated.
