Depressing Defensive Streak

October 28th, 2022

Hi, Todd!”

Boy, when you start matching this level of ineptitude, you just know things are bad.

Former Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith was (and is, he’s not dead) an awesome dude. He was a completely brutal defensive coordinator.

The Bucs had a string of horrifying defenses for a dreadful period of five seasons during the Lost Decade guided by lousy Lovie Smith and then followed by his successor, Mike Smith.

It was a reign of terror by The Smiths.

Well, Bucs coach Todd Bowles matched a Mike Smith plateau last night.

The Bucs have now gone four straight games without a takeaway. That’s right. The last time the Bucs forced a turnover, Sean Murphy-Bunting picked off a Pat Mahomes pass in the second half in the Bucs’ loss to the Chiefs.

That four-game turnover drought (and counting) matches a four-game stretch by Mike Smith’s 2018 defense.

Yes folks, the Bucs are in deep, deep shiite if they are pumping out Mike Smith-like results.

The last time I saw any emotion from the Bucs was when Mike Evans got run in the Saints game. That did jump start the team and they managed to outplay a real bad 3-14 Jameis led Aint team but it likely cost the Bucs in the home opener as the loss of Evans exposed how thin this offense is in that bad loss to a bad Packer team and since then it has been all downhill. The team is like its coaching, clueless, heartless and just about the worst in the league in all facets of the game as things were when Smitty was mailing it in in 2018. Make some changes sooner than later Glazers!

    All good…here we go, Tanking….

Great point though Joe….you guys always keep me on the edge of my seat here….thats how we figure the stupid they’re doing

  3. Bucsfan13 Says:

Logan Ryan is missed. Winfield was missed. Devin White is a liability, and something has to change.

  4. Buczilla Says:

Ugh, that’s depressing. What an incredible waste of talent on both sides of the ball. Heads gotta roll!

  5. Rod Munch Says:

The defense really wasn’t terrible tonight, up until Bowles cowarderly punted from the 50, on 4th and 2, when he knew the defense was spent. I mean by the end of the game, I think we were missing nearly half of the starters.

However, if you have your starters, I think they can keep the game under control. To the Ravens credit, they adjusted to the Bucs injuries and took advantage of them, unlike that idiot Leftwich who makes no adjustments and doesn’t gameplan for weaknesses.

  6. Rod Munch Says:

Also people talking about White as an issue are some of the dumbest people on earth. #27, #22, #30 – those were you problems, those were the guys being picked on on nearly every single play. Once the Ravens realized you could throw at #27 on every play and get an automatic first down, they did that for a while. Then when the Bucs had to play the pass, that’s when they started running.

Neal can not cover anyone, he got left in the dust on every crossing route.

And Delaney is an idiot that shouldn’t be on the team, he stunk last year, he stinks this year, get rid of him.

#27 is a late round rookie, if you throw them out on an island, this is what happens. Can’t blame him as much as the other guys, but he shouldn’t have been in there.

White wasn’t even remotely a problem, it’s just the same idiot lynchmob mentality you always find online, a bunch of dumb talk show listeners who just repeat the same thing over and over again.

  7. Mike Johnson Says:

Looks like Bowles gonna be joinin ole Lovie Dubbie in Texas if he keeps this up.

  8. steele Says:

RodM, you’re right, Delaney, McCollum and Neal were awful all night. (And Delaney causing the special teams turnover was so ridiculous and inexplicable, it looked intentional.) But it is also true that White was a huge problem. Sad how tonight, it’s hard to know who is most to blame because there are so many options.

Ultimately, responsibility is 110% on Bowles and Leftwich.

  9. FortMyersDave Says:

Mike Johnson: I think Bowels would make a great new head coach of the USF Bulls. He might even improve on the 4-24 mark that Coach Scott has proudly managed to achieve. Leftwich can be his new QB coach, they can have a fantastic rivalry with Bus Driver Willie Taggert down at FAU while getting boat raced by most other D1 programs.

  10. T REX Says:

Add in the worst rushing attack in the super bowl Era.

    That’s right…worst all time…ever.

Our staff is embarrassing. Licht is responsible.

  11. T REX Says:

@ rod…stop embarrassing yourself. White is garbage.

He quit too. He is wothless like your posts

  12. A Says:

I think Sue kept interior lineman off of White, but he has to shed blockers….in the 2nd half the Ravens rookie center owned him. We’re just a $hit show on both sides of the ball. Players and coaches..

    Go Bucs! so depressing 🙁

  13. Oneilbuc Says:

Now defense stayed on the field late in the second quarter the Ravens had 58 offensive plays and we were winning the game 10 -3 . We had to many 3 and outs.

  14. Deeez NATZ Says:

You guys won’t admit it so I will.Brady is a spent BATCH! He wanted Bruce fired he got it ! THe bucs may not win another game all year with toilet bowl as head coach…They should trade Brady while is still worth a 6rd pick, clearly the dude has changed since he took trumps reptillian shot ,FAUCI OUCHIE,GET WOKE POKE IN DA TODD BUTTHOLES LOL….Feel bad for the people who bought season tickets.Highway robbery

  15. Bob in valrico Says:

Tough to overcome the loss of Winfield who IMO, is far more impactful than
    White of late.
But Barrett did his part and was all over the field until his injury.

  16. Hodad Says:

Rod M. you’re right about one thing, punting from the 50 on a 4th, and one was the turning point in the game. I knew we were going to lose when Bowles didn’t have the guts to try, and swing the momentum that was going to the Ravens. However defending Betty White you’re totally off base. Herbstriet called him out last night. Brian Baldy did a film break down of him last week saying the same things. Bowles was seen yelling at him. I purposely watched Betty White every down last night, and was screaming at him through the TV. Please rewatch the game focus on just Betty. I think you’ll change your tune.

  17. Patrick in VA Says:

Devin White for Roquan Smith. Straight up. Both super talented, but we don’t need White’s “look at me”attitude and garbage angles.

  18. Canabuc Says:

I think there is a real problem with our athletic training staff. It seems like every year we have a litany of injuries.

I don’t think it can be a coincidence.
How is it that through less than half the season we are sitting there playing with our backup corners a backup safety a backup defensive tackle and third and fourth string wide receivers and guards.

  19. Joe Says:

Also people talking about White as an issue are some of the dumbest people on earth. #27, #22, #30 – those were you problems, those were the guys being picked on on nearly every single play.

None of those guys are No. 5 overall draft picks paid millions.

Kind of a reach compared a No. 5 overall draft pick to a third-day rookie draft pick and a career backup like Delaney.

  20. Pete Says:

SMB’s pick later in the game was inconsequential. We were down by 17 at the time and in the 4th quarter. We haven’t had a turnover that had any meaning for FIVE games.
