Chiefs 41, Buccaneers 31

October 2nd, 2022

“Where’s the run defense?”

The unthinkable happened tonight. Our beloved Buccaneers defense didn’t show up after allowing just 27 points through the first three games of the season.

Kansas City abused the Bucs with 189 yards on just 37 carries and two touchdowns on the ground. That set up Patrick Mahomes to have a peaceful and Bucs-crushing night — 23-of-37 for 249 yards and three touchdowns en route to a 41-31 win.

How does a beastly defense like that crumble? At home?

Joe has a one-word answer: outcoached. But it goes beyond that. There was a profound lack of collective physicality from the Bucs’ defense, which is rather sad.

This was a big game on a national stage — at home. Joe’s even confident that the film will show loafs on defense, which was unfathomable a week ago.

Oh, well. It’s just one game.

At least Tom Brady looks damn good, and surprisingly mobile. He finished 38-of-51 for 367 yards and three touchdowns. Not bad for a 45-year-old QB.

The return of Chris Godwin was beautiful to see, and it should leave Bucs fans feeling good about the offense’s potential. Godwin had seven catches for 58 yards, and it’s clear his knee is healthy, though the rest of him may be a bit brittle.

On the ground, the Bucs had 6 carries for 3 yards, which is damn hard to do.

Rookie Rachaad White’s opening-play fumble wasn’t why the Bucs lost, but it sure put the Bucs in a needless hole. Needless because White has no business taking a kickoff out of the end zone.

Next up? The 2-2 Falcons. The winner will lead the NFC South, alone, after five games.

Hey,.,, we hung 31 on KC again.
Thanks Rachaad for setting a great tone.

  2. SKBucsFan Says:

I can’t believe that I waited all day for Sunday Night.

  3. DoooshLaRue Says:

Almost as good as a Tennessee pick 6 from JayMiss to start a game.

  4. Rod Munch Says:

The game wasn’t lost because of a fumble on the 1st play.

It was lost when it was clear the defense wasn’t going to do jack tonight, and that POS coward Bowles took the ball out of Brady’s hands, when it’s already 14-3, and punted on 4th and 2 near midfield. That’s when the game was lost, because he wasn’t even going to give Brady a chance to win it.

That’s what Dirk would have done too by the way. It’s what Schiano would have done. It’s what Morris would have done. It’s what Perkins, Williams, Bennett, etc would have done. All losers.

  5. Pewter Power Says:

Vea was loading for sure, starting to think sapp was right about him. He just doesn’t have the power he had before.

  6. Leftwichgottago Says:

Brady was Brady because we had to throw it. Unfortunately Bowles and Leftwich were Bowles and Leftwich… so 2-2… too Old 45… what a joke the man is a monster. The coaches consistently let the team down… and The defense is a daaaaang sieve!

  7. Yucs2Bucs Says:

Looking at Veas soft face makes me sick . Please Bruce come home and turn these cat walkers into real men

  8. R0n@Tampa Says:

At 2-0 fans were boasting an undefeated season. Now they are ripping the team. Come on man.

  9. Nwbucfan Says:

How are you gonna snap the ball before you concussed te can get off the field. Embarrassing

  10. Bucsfan13 Says:

    Suh!!!!

  11. DoosLaRue Big Brother Says:

    Should have kept suh

  12. Boltsfan17 Says:

    Beastly defense? Far from it.

  13. Rod Munch Says:

With 3 mins left, on a critical 3rd down, the Chiefs ran right over Vita, probably because he’s morbidly obese and too tired to have still been in the game. Lose some weight you tub of lard then you might actually make some key plays when they’re needed.

  14. PassingThru Says:

It is what it is: Even good teams get a beat down over the course of a season. This can serve as a focal point for the coaching staff and players.

Remember, it’s only 10/2. If this happened after late after Thanksgiving, it would be far more troubling.

  15. EA Says:

Pathetic coming out flat 2 games straight at home in front your fans. I guess the players take after the personality of the coach.

  16. LVMYBUCS Says:

Davis played scared last game and this game

  17. Anthony Says:

What happened to the D-line? What happened to the middle of the secondary? Vea, White, Winfield Jr. All absent from the game. This was a massive wake up call of a game.

  18. Destinjohnny Says:

    Vea got paid
    Vea got soft
    Weak as F

  19. Kody Says:

Bucs never recovered from White’s opening play FUMBLE.

Second week in a row we have destroyed ourselves with fumbles.

  20. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

Out coached is right. Was saying all game. Slow start on offense, almost chucked a beer bottle into my TV.

  21. Goatfarmer Says:

They ran for over 200 on our allegedly run stuffing D. Miss Suh yet?

    Suh.

    Light? Don’t be stupid.

  22. BucsBro Says:

Some real positives from the game, biggest one was White after his fumble to start the game.

Run defense was awful. Overall defense was not up to par. We’re still suckers for the short passing/slant game.

Glad to see the offense start to figure it out. White can be a huge asset, and if the receivers ever get healthy we can roll.

Brady can still carry a team. Also good to see.

  23. DoosLaRue Big Brother Says:

@Yucs2Bucs would not have made a difference moron

  24. regulator16 Says:

Opening kick off set the tone for that game. Defense got humbled. No rushing attack. So much to work on. But before season started I pegged us at 2-2. But damn, we got a lot to fix!

  25. David Says:

I think it is safe to say the vaunted rush defense is no more. It’s been gradually not doing well starting at the end of last year.

That is not why they lost though. They lost because they repeatedly shot themselves in the foot
Untimely penalties, two horrendous turnovers that lead to 14 points, some missed blocks, not getting off the field on third down, failing to wrap Mahomes up (which, in their defense, is every defense is problem).

On the bright side, they put up 31 despite some of that. Hopefully this leads to them opening the O up a little more since they got some receivers back.

  26. Tee Says:

Bad game tonight all around. This wasn’t a normal week for the team with the Hurricane issues and such. I love how the Bowles hate is here so early. Lol. This dude had the best defense going until tonight. Relax it was the Chiefs. Atlanta is just what the doctor ordered.

  27. Goatfarmer Says:

Is there a team in the Premier League that’s any good? JoeSoccerFan?

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Their RBs tore us up……seemed like they got 4 or 5 yards after the hit….constantly.

I fell bad for R. White…..but he did go 5-5 on targets and scored a TD…..hopefully, his confidence isn’t totally shot.

  29. Leftwichgottago Says:

I actually don’t mind losing if it’s fun to watch. This team outside of Brady amd Evans is UGLY

  30. LVMYBUCS Says:

If I was Brady I would be like ask the coaches why we lost not me.

  31. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

    So I’ll start:

    SUH!

  32. View from 132 Says:

Ass kicked. Might as well have been 95-6. What an embarrassment. Completely outcoached. Not physical enough. Just glad I don’t pay for tickets anymore.

  33. unbelievable Says:

    Unthinkable?

Nah, all these things were very predictable:

☑️ Shaq getting manhandled after running his mouth

☑️ Devin White getting abused after getting too high on his own press clippings

☑️ The team being mentally weak and unable to stop playing stupid football.

☑️ Cowardly coaching and play calling

    Again, all very thinkable.

  34. Oneilbuc Says:

Carlton Davis ain’t that good to me Brady played good tonight but defense lost the game. But I like what I saw with Rashard White and Devin White need to just shut up and play football. Should the bucs resign Devin White that the million dollar question ❓❓

  35. Kentucky Buc Says:

Nobody showed up Joe except Brady and Evans. Edwards played decent. Lenny and White did okay in the passing game. The rest of the team and coaches stunk the place up.

  36. Francisco Guzman Says:

Is vea out of shape? Why has his play been this terrible? Also some other guys on the d-line are not cutting it. Either way the bucs need to win the next 3 games and they need to start looking good. This coaching staff is a weakness.

  37. Rod Munch Says:

The worst part of this game, by far, was Bowles being a complete and total cowardly idiot who refused to even give Brady a shot to get back into this. This moron, down by multiple scores, refuses to use all 4 downs on offense, doesn’t onside kick, doesn’t fake punt, this coward doesn’t give his team a chance to win – he’s just worried about not losing as bad.

    What a loser mentality.

Will these clowns in the media call him out? Nope.

  38. Yucs2Bucs Says:

You think after how last year ended this team would be so fired up ?? Umm watching Vita and all the others who cashed in play like chicks is disgusting!! Soft AF and obviously the D line needs to grow a pair !!! Bring back Suh and real men with attitude and not these cat walks

  39. Anonymous Says:

White lost it for us. Idc what u think joe

  40. Kody Says:

    >>>punted on 4th and 2 near midfield when score was 14-3

Cowardly, ultra-conservative, un-creative play is going to kill us all season, guys

Our coaches are our worst enemies, not our opponents

  41. DoosLaRue Big Brother Says:

You know the Joe’s really wanna say bring back suh deep down as much as they talk crap about him

  42. David Says:

Kody, I disagree with that. They were on their way to potentially making it a 21-17 game. Brady fumbles and they end up down 28-10. I think that destroyed the momentum and made it impossible to get it back

  43. Bucfan1988 Says:

Something is wrong with the defensive line…..
No heart!!!!! Loafing, not getting off blocks…

    VITA VEA, where you at???

and supposedly you been trying to “fix” the run defense???
    Here’s a thought….

    BEING BACK SUH now 🤷🏻‍♂️!!!

Something is broke on this d-line…..

Even when you KNEW Chiefs were gonna run it, they were getting 7-8 yards in 1st down…….

    What the hell????

  44. Anonymous Says:

    Suh!!!!!!

  45. bogiedr Says:

We suck, better yet, Byron is awful!! End of conversation.

  46. dmatt Says:

Russel Gage played passive n lost. Can Brate has garbage hands n is passive. He should step back n let otton n Ko kief show what they can do. Our defense arm tackled n allowed the rookie running back to beast mode them on most plays. Mike Edwards should’ve stripped the ball on the sack on maholmes. Devin white again over run his plays n allowed kelce to school him n David. Brady, Fournette, Hainsey, n Evans all balled out.

  47. Bucschamp Says:

Give credit to KC. That was brilliant coaching and Mahomes was fantastic.

    How’s Brady’s shoulder?

  48. Anon Says:

Listen you tell any Bucs fan that after this gauntlet from hell the first 4 weeks they would be 2-2 you would take that all day.

Now you got Falcons, Steelers, and Panthers. I mean they hung 31 on Chiefs nuff said, the offense is back.

I’m also glad everyone is healthy.

  49. Mike C Says:

Wow oneilbuc, first time I think I have ever even close to agreed with you.

  50. PassingThru Says:

There are some holes in this team that have to be addressed: Poor coverage of Kelce, soft run defense, an alarming inability to get defensive stops on third down, a first round EDGE player who looks hopelessly raw, poor pass protection (spare me the crap that there were only 2 sacks), the lack of a starting-quality TE, free agent WRs who contributed next to nothing, and abysmal Special Teams performance.

  51. Kody Says:

Bros, you know Gisele is (secretly) happy right now. Nothing a wife likes more than saying, See, I told you this would happen.

  52. Bucsfan13 Says:

Will Ira find a way to blame Brady?

  53. Kentucky Buc Says:

Often getting some targets was good to see. It’s a long season . Get the TEs incorporated . Work towards the playoffs.

  54. Rod Munch Says:

With as awful as this loss was, and with as much as I think Bowles is a cowardly POS for not giving his team a chance to get back into this game, the Bucs should still be 5-2 in a few weeks, and as predicted, the Bucs offense would get back on track this game.

This was the Chiefs Super Bowl, so, Chiefs fans, enjoy it all you can, and as a Bucs fan I’ll take the actual SB win.

Next 3 are ATL, @PIT, @CAR, and the Bucs should beat up on all three.

  55. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Defense was bitch slapped all over the field. Dline is soft and gashed all game long. Sapp was very right about Vea. In last 2 games defense has allowed TDs on first 2 opening drives. Would have been 3 if Green Bay RB doesn’t fumble. So much for the vaunted D under Bowles. Leftwich play calling sucks and Buc only have one reliable WR and other teams know it. Why doesn’t Leftwich copy some of the plays KC runs from here on out. Really miss BA. Also, our Oline really sucks. At least we’re in a sorry division.

  56. DBS Says:

The defense has been exposed for what it is. And before the SUH gang starts he was not going to stop it from happening. Credit goes to KC. They were ready for our defense and Bowles.

  57. Francisco Guzman Says:

I just don’t understand the scheme defensively wiht this team. It seems like they don’t get physical at all.

  58. David Says:

Everyone’s going to complain about Todd Bowles suddenly. He was a God for three weeks now suddenly he is horrible and should be fired as DC or HC.

    The O line lost today.
    The D line lost today.
    Mahomes out played Brady.
Their coaches outcoached the Buc coaches.
And they had 2 momentum killing turnovers that led to 14 points and took away potential points from the Buccaneers.

So no it wasn’t just coaching, it was all of them.

  59. PassingThru Says:

Oops, one sack. Been up since 4:30 AM.

  60. HC Grover Says:

Simple, fire losers Bowles and Leftwich. Ariens trainees are not ready for prime time. Fire them now or risk not even winning the division. This game was a Bowles Blunder from start to finish.

  61. Yucs2Bucs Says:

When fans are arguing with each other you know it’s real !! The coach is soft AF and so are these players. White go cash in elsewhere and Vita grow up and hoping the others find their Ballz because 2 games in a row of not stopping the run is horribly obvious and see absolutely no accountability or leadership

  62. Pewter Power Says:

The o line is missing Jensen badly and I don’t really know what to say about the defense that was pure lack of effort. it seemed like mahomes would complete 100% of his passes they were so lost.

Great team loss, offense, defense and special team all did their part to get embarrassed. I’m sick of leftwich the only time the offense moves is during hurry up offense

  63. Rod Munch Says:

Defense was bitch slapped all over the field. Dline is soft and gashed all game long. Sapp was very right about Vea.

    ———

Sapp has always been right about the overrated Vita. But Sapp’s point was that Vita just needs to lose some weight, you can’t play in Florida at 350+ lbs. Also, 350lb was Vita’s combine weight when he was in peak condition, no way he’s not pushing 390 now. The tub of lard needs to drop some pounds. If he got down to 330, he’d not be any worse of a run stopper, and he’d be more than a 2 down player who has to take off every other series because he’s out of breath.

  64. @Bucsfan Says:

Brady’s arm is fine, he threw lasers and everything. He had a fantastic game.

  65. Kody Says:

    @Bucschamp –

AGREE. KC was phenomenal. Fantastic play call. Creative. Gutsy. Constantly had our D guessing and on their heels. Could NOT be stopped on 3rd downs the entire game. Mahomes was freaking AMAZING—running for big gains, scrambling and making jaw-dropping passes.

While the Bucs D looked in tatters and our OL looked like Swiss cheese. NOT a good day to be a Bucs fan.

  66. David Says:

They were not going undefeated. Most thought they would get through these first four games at 2-2. I figured 3-1. After they lost most they’re receiving corps and Donovan Smith… Getting through these 4 games at 2-2 is respectable.
This is going to be a wake up call for the defense and the offense got some momentum.
They will be 5–2 heading into the Ravens game

  67. Francisco Guzman Says:

David you really think the bucs coaching staff is not a weakness? Come on dude. How do you come out flat for two games in a row at home? You think that’s not on the coaches? Also adjustments. Can the coaching staff make adjustments?

  68. Goatfarmer Says:

Watch what Cordarelle Patterson and Mariota do to Todd’s overhyped, overrated and apparently priceless defense. White can’t cover the pass. The middle run defense is soft but at least the edges are softer. That pussoi display reminded me of Raheehaw’s 2011 demise games.

    Crossroads.

  69. Goatfarmer Says:

    Prideless.

  70. Leftwichgottago Says:

Man if I was Brady I would tell the coaches to man the F up or I’m going home. Too old for this shirt. Coach like you wanna win you cowards

  71. Chris Says:

    Carlton Davis Smdh

  72. matthew veal Says:

Rushing 189 kc to 3 tb
I don’t think the problem is fixed. I was fooled by the Dallas game.
Both the ol and the dl are not going to be good enough to get us to a super bowl even if the 2 young guys in each side make a rapid improvement

  73. Leftwichgottago Says:

Brady got owned by KC in the 4th game in 2014 and then wen touts and win a super bowl. That only happens with GREAT coaching. That doesn’t exist here

  74. Leftwichgottago Says:

    Went nuts… sheesh

  75. Coburn Says:

Bought into their own hype too much and then got stunned and didn’t recover. I remember one play where it looked like Devin white just touched the receiver on the back as he ran by. Was almost as if he was playing touch football but he didn’t even use both hands. Was baffling and showed lack of hustle even though he did on other plays.

I saw aot of bad communication where receivers crossed on a couple plays. One where both guys ended up covering the same guy and another where the recognition and hand off was too late

  76. Yucs2Bucs Says:

When Atlanta comes in a gets the Dub then we will see just how bad it really is, but to see players give up and not show effort is alarming.. No leaders equals no accountability and that we didn’t see any arguing on the sidelines from players is also a bad sign.

  77. Francisco Guzman Says:

Leftwich that’s belichick this is Bowles lol.

  78. Coburn Says:

Hoping Logan Ryan can help shore those guys up. Was he injured? Saw more Neal and even some bunting

  79. LeftwichgottagoAndBowles too Says:

If you force Brady to play a perfect game you will lose. No one plays a perfect game. The rest of the team has to do SOMEThing

  80. Yucs2Bucs Says:

Wow Coburn saw the same thing and was like
Wow this guy really just did that

  81. Tvan101 Says:

Mahomes struggles against cover 2 so let’s make sure to play soft man and zero cover 2 the entire game. We rook what 2 deep shots? So much for no risk it no biscuit.

  82. LeftwichgottagoAndBowles too Says:

    Francisco… exactly!!! We are bleeped

  83. Anon Says:

Alright relax clown, Mariota is no Patrick Mahomes.

The Bucs have a very favorable 3 game stretch coming potentially 4 games since the Ravens have become choke artists.

  84. Kentucky Buc Says:

Some of the players needed that. A few in particular. Not going to name names but STFU and play.

  85. Yucs2Bucs Says:

In all seriousness the loss of JPP and Suh is so apparent because instead of leaders we have a bunch of followers playing D. White needs to give the C to someone else or on one of his horses because he’s immature and overweight like Vea, Shaq, Lenny, should I keep going

  86. Yucs2Bucs Says:

We lost a chance at a SB birth and this is how they come out this season ?? WTF !!! Night

  87. LakelandSteve Says:

Yes Vita Vea is completely underwhelming right now. Say what you want about JPP last year but at least he could half way play the run with one arm. Much better than JTS. He looks absolutely lost out there sometimes. Maybe now people can see why there are so many people wanting the Bucs to sign Suh. I don’t care how he graded out last year, with him in there the Bucs were stopping the run. In 2020 even though the Bucs defense played crappy early on at least they were playing well against the run. Getting your ass handed to you by a team that just runs the ball down your throat is demoralizing. It doesn’t bode well for the future.

  88. Ash Says:

This team will get it together alot going on this week. As the starters play together the offense will get crazy hot. Can not have turnovers playing good teams it’s the death of any team but I have faith they this team will get rolling soon.

  89. Will Says:

    Yucs
That’s exactly what I was thinking no way JPP doesn’t go off on the sidelines. This team doesn’t have a true leader. Devin White has the mouth but didn’t back it up tonight. If he doesn’t over run Mahomes he wouldn’t have made that circus type throw for the 2nd TD. He doesn’t play under control often. WTF did we bring in Julio Jones? Still waiting on him to do something. Can anyone tell me why we have press corners but decided to play them off so night? There’s too much to complain about from this game. 2-2 isn’t bad but defense didn’t come back from Miami.

  90. Kody Says:

Once we get Suh, Gronk and Jensen back, we’ll get back to our winning ways, guys. You’ll see! Have some faith!

  91. Crickett Baker Says:

Lots of things already mentioned really concerned me but it also constantly looked like it took 5 of our guys to tackle one of theirs, and we were also rarely in position for an interception. It was mind-boggling.

  92. Tony Says:

Bring back Dungy & Kiffin! Monte would probably still know how to run the D even at like 80 or so. Just couldn’t see them winning this game after the way they looked last week.

  93. Tony Says:

Brady’s gonna retire now just after these last two games.

  94. Onetrickpony Says:

    Defense, what defense?

  95. Tony Says:

Stevie Wonder would’ve had 100 yards rushing against them in that game.

  96. Nate Says:

Veal was getting double teamed every play and no other lineman can win one-on-one against anyone. We (and Vea) miss Suh bad!

  97. Tony Says:

Even the homeless guy on the street would’ve had a 100 yards rushing against them in that game.

  98. Buczilla Says:

Painful game to watch and our defense got abused. There’s still 13 games to go, but our coaching needs to improve if we hope to even make the playoffs. It’s gonna be a long week. 🙂

  99. Anonymous Says:

This comment section is a bit dramatic. We lost by 10 points to a team that is year in and year out a Super Bowl contender. We could not stop KC offense but there are very fees teams that can. Our offense final showed some life. I understand having Super Bowl expectations and I agree to be a real contender we have to win games like this. It starts with getting healthy and finding our rhythm. Offensive line has to be able to create holes for our running back and our defense needs to come to play every week.

  100. Steven L. Benner Says:

This game was just sad!!! If there is anyone in the NFL that knows how to beat KC & Patrick Mahomes it would be Tom Brady. Kelsey should have been Double Teamed….just like in the past Superbowl! Not enough pressure on Patrick Mahomes- he actually ran in a Touchdown himself???!!! And all head Coach Todd Bowles could do was just stand there and make no adjustments and see his team crumble. Just like his days with the NY Jets!!! Why do we have him as our Head Coach??!!! We Lost all 3 of our Preseason games….with him at the helm! Future doesn’t look too good for the Bucs with a tough schedule ahead! We have to play LA Rams soon too- scary.

  101. Steven L. Benner Says:

The KC Cheifs looked like they were on something- Steroids or something! They just wouldn’t fall to the ground and were like raging bulls out there!!! The NFL needs to run a drug test with that team.

  102. Defense Rules Says:

Anonymous … ‘This comment section is a bit dramatic.’

Had to read through almost all of these whining comments before I found one that actually made sense. Two turnovers deep in Bucs territory, terrible run defense, inadequate pass rush combined with yet another slow start by our offense got us into a very DEEP hole in the 1st half against an excellent team, then we became 1-dimensional & tried to claw our way back. Sound familiar? It should; it’s an all too familiar prescription for losing.

Bucs’ defense didn’t just look mortal last night; they stunk. When you surrender 41 points against any team, you stink. When you allow the other team to keep the ball for 77 offensive plays & almost 39 minutes, you stink. When you allow them to convert 12-for-18 on 3rd/4th down, you stink. And when you allow them to run the ball down your throat 37 times for 189 yards rushing, sorry but you stink.

Bucs’ offense finally came alive & put up 31 points. Kudos. Tom Brady had another career night: 39-for-52 (75%) for 385 yards & 3 TDs. Awesome. He only got sacked once & had zero running attack to help him (oops, I exaggerated: 6 rushes for 3 yards; whoopee). Bucs converted 6-of-10 on 3rd downs, and made 27 first downs on the night; same number that the Chiefs made. Excellent. The problem? Bucs run-pass ratio of 12% on the night was a prescription for losing against a well-balanced team like the Chiefs (their run-pass ratio was 48% which allowed them to hold the ball for 39 mins vs 21 mins).

How to fix it? Well we won’t fix it by whining about coaching. Bucs offense put up 31 points; stop whining. They did it by going heavy ‘No Riskit-No Biscuit’; that’s what most of you wanted & you got it. Bucs’ defense got exposed: crappy run defense & mediocre pass rush. That’s NOT on Todd Bowles; that’s on the players on the field. For all the bragging that’s gone on, they weren’t all that good against a quality OLine. They miss the leadership provided by Suh and yes JPP. And unless they fix that, there’ll be a lot more games just like this one.

  103. Roc Says:

Vita is Playing just like MCCoy use to.. Push them stand up fall to one side.
Get one play with some push then sit down

SUH is underrated.. I bet this would be a different DLine because Suh would punch Vita in the mouth for playing WEAK

  104. garro Says:

“We didn’t tackle well today but we made up for it by not blocking.”

“Can’t stop the pass or the run. Otherwise, we’re in great shape.”

When asked about his team’s execution: “I’m in favor of it.”
