CBS: At This Point, Todd Bowles Should Not Be In Danger Of Losing His Job

October 24th, 2022

Job security.

After yesterday’s game, the wolves are out for the Bucs.

Maybe for the first time since former Bucs commander Greg Schiano was pacing the sidelines has Joe seen demand from Bucs fans that someone’s head should roll for the way the Bucs are spiraling out of control and for how a loaded offense cannot move the ball much less score touchdowns.

The Bucs came “this close” to being shut out by a truly garbage team.

Joe was getting peppered with questions about Todd Bowles’ job security. He’s not getting fired today. Just mere fact the Bucs have a game in three days makes it a ridiculous thought that Bowles would be canned now.

Besides, Joe reasons, Bowles is a defensive guy. It’s the Bucs offense that is blowing chunks. The defense is playing OK, certainly well enough to beat lousy teams.

(Joe has a very different opinion on offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich.)

Also, Joe noted Bowles has said twice on the record he wanted to hire specific assistants but couldn’t because he was hired so late in the coaching cycle. So the Bucs would run off a coach before he got to choose his own staff?

In eyes of “this Joe,” things would have to go Raheem Morris-like haywire (the Bucs went 4-2 but finished 4-12 in 2011) for Bowles to get run. And it seems Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports agrees.

In his weekly overreaction/reality check, Kerr thinks too Bowles will survive.

Todd Bowles won’t last the season as Buccaneers head coach

Overreaction or reality: Overreaction

Tom Brady is under .500 this late in a season for the first time since 2002. The Buccaneers just scored three points against a Panthers squad that is one of the worst in the NFL. A team that just traded Christian McCaffrey and started PJ Walker scored 21 points against a once-vaulted defense — a unit Bowles runs.

Bowles earned the opportunity to coach the Buccaneers after Bruce Arians retired, but was it the right move? This stint looks reminiscent of his New York Jets tenure, but Bowles has far more talent now.

The NFC South is bad, so Bowles deserves the opportunity to right the ship. Tampa Bay is fortunate this situation isn’t worse — although the Tom Brady drama and the inconsistent offense and defense is pretty bad.

Bowles is in a tough spot. He was hired, in part, because Bucco Bruce Arians wanted Bowles to have (at least) a year with a good quarterback to demonstrate he can be a good NFL head coach.

Well, Bowles has that quarterback and this place is falling apart before Halloween.

Does he p!ss off his long-time good friend who got him the job, Arians, by removing Arians’ hand-picked offensive coordinator Leftwich or demoting him or telling him to resign — or else?

And certainly, there is always the argument that if Bowles cannot win with Brady, how can he win with a lesser quarterback?

Unless, of course, Leftwich is sacrificed and the Bucs go on a run.

  2. Jack Sparrow Says:

The Giants hired a new coach and look at them now. Bowles has no idea how to win. He just opened up his JETS playbook and applied it to the Bucs. Pathetic!

  3. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Yes it’s early but if the he does not do the things necessary to make the team better then he should be.

  4. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Who is going to call the plays in the absence of Leftwich? Christensen? Would probably get worse.

  5. Jack Sparrow Says:

Bucs are stuck with Bowles and Leftwich. Anything that lowers their position as HC and OC will be considered as R****t by the media mob.

  6. Paratrooper Buc Says:

Bowles is the coach. His is responsible to prepare the team from basic fundamentals to the the schemes to motivating players. Of course like any other HC, he delegates to other coaches. It’s his job to get the team to win and they have not. They have gotten worse as the season has gone on. Defense is too aggressive and not playing smart. The better coached teams have used our speed to beat us. Carolina and Steelers did that and the defense got lead around by the nose and made holes for the opponents. The offense has two massive problems. The O line which might be fixed with Jensen returning and Hainsey taking over for Goedecke. Brady has no faith in that line and has less time to throw and that line cannot block for. run. The second and bigger issue is play calling is horrible. If Leftwich cannot scheme to the current strengths or minimize the current weaknesses then his plan is to keep doing the same thing. Run up the middle or pray the Oline can hold for a longer pass. Bucs could make the playoffs but SB is a pipe dream. Too many other teams are 1 if not easily 2 tiers above this current Bucs team.

  7. Faspro Says:

Jack Sparrow, you are correct, it’s the woke world we live in now.

  8. MadMax Says:

Thats right, the dumpster fire is just fine….pull up a chair next to it and get warm lol. Who are these fools cbs anyway?

  9. Cj Says:

    Might be too early, but……
He sucked as a Jets coach.
The entire team is not playing well.
    Offense is ‘way off’.
Brady’s timing is off.. last week he was throwing at ankles and in the dirt.
This week he overthrows his wide receivers…. A step her or a step there.
Brady has to shoulder the blame.
Lackluster offensive play calling is a nice way of putting it.
Looks like the team has lost respect for Brady.
    Plenty of reasons for that.

  10. rrsrq Says:

I wonder how is the locker room, i know they will not say anything publically, but I can imagine some of the personalities on the defense quietly getting p.o’d, who are theylooking side-eyed at, Bowles, leftwich, o-line or the skill positions

  11. Davenport Says:

At this point, the only acceptable move is to cut Leftwich loose and slide BA in at the OC. Then assess the entire organization in January.

Other than that, Bowles & Leftwich must go at the bye week if they are under .500

This world has gotten far too soft and patient with underachieving. Its not Ok to fail and “my bad” doesn’t make it right

  12. SufferingSince76 Says:

So, per Jeff Kerr, it’s okay to be garbage because the rest of the division is garbage? What kind of logic is that? And what makes him think Bowles can right the ship? What’s he basing that on?

  13. Bucfan Says:

I am looking like a genious for giving up my season tickets I had for 42 years! The games during the 0-26 years were more entertaining. At least the future was worth looking forward to.

  14. SB~LV Says:

    rrsrq
    the locker room
Speaks loud and clear on the field!
I have been a Buc fan since the first preseason game!
This is the most bizarre chapter in Buc history
and I don’t want to see another nano second of it
Or know that this coaching staff is still in the building!
    INEXCUSABLE

  15. Bojim Says:

Bowles should’ve hired his special assistants way before the season even started. However, he deserves more than seven games.

  16. D-Rome Says:

The NFL has an issue with hiring minority coaches on the sidelines. They don’t get fair opportunities. That being said, Bowles and Leftwich being 3-4 does not help the cause at all and could set the league back another 20 years.

I think Bowles can be a good head coach. Leftwich was the OC for a Super Bowl winner. They are successful but somehow their past success isn’t translating. Personnel is part of the problem but it’s not the entire problem. The coaches are culpable.

  17. Jack Sparrow Says:

Panthers played a QB fresh from the streets, no WR’s, no RB’s, no TE’s. THey just basically put out a team so as not to default that game and yet our highly paid Defense cannot put a stop. And CBS is saying defense played great and will save Bowles job….. shameful!!!

  18. Roc Says:

    THE DEFENSE IS OK

    HAHAHA

WHAT GAME IS JOE WATCHING SUNDAY???

Bucs D was scored on 3 times by a bottom Team with a New Interm HC, 4th string QB and Losing their Top Offensive player two days before.

    Good Defensive WHAT A JOKE

BOWLES IS A JOKE JUST LIKE LOVIE AND RAHEEM

MCSOFTY FOOTBALL ALL OVER AGAIN JUST LOOK AT VITA AS EXAMPLE

  19. LJ'sDaddy Says:

Anyone want to buy tickets for the Bengals game in December? Not sure I should spend my hard earned coin to drive 6 hours, get a room, etc.

  20. Oxycondoms Says:

    The toilet bowles of coaching

  21. No one important. Says:

Everyone knows why he won’t be fired this year. No one will say it. You won’t hear any media personalities talk about it. He has “Black Armor”. He’s safe from criticism and will be afforded plenty of protection. He’s right. Dark days, indeed. After he has a losing record for the next two seasons and Tom is long gone… Then he will get fired.

The BUCS so called “defense” is letting QB3’s look like Tom Brady in his prime. The BUCS so called offense is making TB12 look every bit of 45.

  22. T REX Says:

Bowels is a bad coach…purple, yellow or orange…he stinks.

    Stop the BS already.

  23. Ed Says:

Bucs D is ok as far as giving up points but as many are saying they are being let down by the offense. There was a screen Fox put up on the Bucs first 6 possessions. Believe it was 5 punts and a turnover on 4th down failure.

That offense is horrible. Brady threw for 300 yards and it can’t score a touchdown because once the field gets compressed it can’t get 1 yard.

That shouldn’t happen. When Bucs went hurry up and Brady was calling the plays those short yardage 3rd downs were converted with short passes but when they slowed it down and tried to rely on Lenny to get a yard, failed every time as it did the week before.

Leftwich is stubborn and uncreative. Those 3rd and ones are so predictable where the ball is going that even a lousy Steeler and Panther teams have blown up Lenny.

Watch other teams as they rotate backs and get 3 different backs in a game. Thats 21st century NFL. Our team thinks they have Walter Payton back there and that they can just hand off for a yard.

Watch other teams on 3rd and one, shotgun. Most pass for the yard, its easier than running from what I’m watching every week in other games.

  24. HC Grover Says:

CBS wokesters. Winning is not the issue. Virtue signals mean much more.

  25. Bobby M. Says:

Bowles stamp is definitely visible with the offense, we’re definitely running more through 3 quarters despite minimal success. He’s doing that so his defense doesn’t tire in the 4th qtr but our offense is so bad, it’s simply not an effective strategy.

  26. Bucobill99 Says:

Lenny said itll get worse before it gets better, dont know how much worse it can get then the past 2 weeks

  27. Natron Says:

These are sick times folks, when the (Woke) media believes that because of a man’s skin color, he is a winning coach just because he was able attain a head coaching position

  28. Sean Says:

Too bad they Bowels and Leftwich can’t be fired today. We know why the Glazers wouldn’t dare… the two have [ahem] plot armor.

  29. Your Mom Says:

In hindsight, Arians forcing them to make Bowles head coach while keeping Byron Leftwich as OC was probably a mistake. Created those loyalty difficulties that you mentioned.

  30. Pruritus Ani Says:

I saw this same exact ineptitude when he was with the NYJ. A leopard doesn’t change its spots. That is why I was shocked when they promoted him.

  31. Jack Sparrow Says:

If Bowles and Leftwich have a shame, they would submit their letter of resignation ASAP. Admit that they do not have the mental capacity to be a coach and apologize to the fans and organization for the pain that they have cause. THen we move on.

  32. SaltyBucsFan Says:

Fire Byron and make Bruce offensive coordinator. And for gods sake, get a left guard. We can’t have clowns like Goedeke blocking for Tom Brady.

  33. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Brady is not playing poorly…..but it is possible that his leadership is not as effective because of his off-field issues…..the training camp vacation & the wedding.
But, Bowles is the head coach and he’s responsible….

And, Joe….do you really think that if Bowles had an opportunity to pick his assistants….that he would have jettisoned Leftwich?

    Hardly not…..

One has to wonder what…if anything BA is saying to them.

  34. Bosch Says:

Raheem should have been fired mid season. If Bucs lose next two, Bowels should too.

  35. Bosch Says:

In Schiano’ defense, he truly did have. Garbage team. The billboards were classless.

  36. Tom in Madtown Says:

You can only fire Bowles mid-season if you have someone on the current staff that is capable of stepping in and taking over. I don’t see that. If Bowles is fired, Arians is gone. That’s his guy and hand picked sucessor.

IMO, Bowles needs to give up calling defensive plays and get more involved with the offense. As a defensive coach, Bowles should be able to evaluate the scheme and personnel of the opposing defense anbd give Leftwich insight into how to beat it.

The entire coaching staff needs to swallow their pride, do an honest and thorough self-assessment, and then CHANGE!

As to the players, we need more from the Oline, more from pass catchers not named Evans and Godwin, and more from the defense. The defense is not creating turnovers. They are not sticking to their assignements. Where was the outside contain on stretch plays yesterday? Why are guys getting caught out of position? Where is the pass rush? They held a players only meeting after the debacle in Pittsburgh. Obviously that didn’t do much.

  37. Ricardo Says:

    Shiiiii…
Somebody does. Todd and BL are driving a Lambo in first gear. This a team with a identity shift from last year. Same team, new, incompetent, gun shy identity.

  38. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Joe, after the last two “performances” this could get “Raheem-like on steroids”….3-14 is not out of the question

  39. Letsbucinggo Says:

Arians was a hard nose screaming coach Bowles is much too easy on his players and some take advantage of it.

  40. Francisco Guzman Says:

When they get destroyed on Thursday night football i wonder if they will feel the same. The season is basically unraveling. This staff is pathetic. If they gonna keep the coaching staff then trade brady and see what you can get.

  41. Nicholas Carlson Says:

    29-45

  42. alton green Says:

SB LV says. Nailed it my friend. But I didn’t read the article. The headline was enough. The woilves are out now????? My friends this wolf was out in the first few games of watching the clusterf^%$ known as Todd Bowles. I’ve been watching for 6 decades. DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Go woke
    go broke
very clever and very true. If you took the wins he had as coach of the Jets and added them, we’d still be in trouble hahahahahhaha

    “Buc D. Truth Says:
    October 16th, 2022 at 8:18 pm
Would anyone be SHOCKED if the Bucs don’t win next week? Or the week after that? Clearly the offense is NOT getting better. Licht & Arians have too much loyalty to demote or remove Bowles & Leftwich. This year may be lost. The D is NOT the same without the toughness and leadership of Suh and JPP. Wouldn’t be surprised if Brady does not finish this year. Next year the whole team should be blown up. New GM, New Coach, and New players who are driven to be the best in a tough sport and hungry to compete for more than one SB. We had to wait 18 years between Super Bowls. If the Bucs make the right moves now (that is, clean house and get value for whatever talent they have) maybe we won’t have to wait so long for the next one.”

  44. Marine Buc Says:

Todd Bowles doesn’t have the minerals to do what is needed in order to “right this ship”… He isn’t going to fire anyone.

This team will continue the downward spiral until Bowles is fired.

Unfortunately the owners are just as spineless as the heir head coach. So Bowles will get another year at least…

The Ravens will beat us by at least 30 on Thursday.

  45. sasquatch Says:

I see a lot of losers on here bellyaching about wokeness. I’m pretty sure wokeness has nothing to do with the condition of the team or the media narrative about it. Maybe try turning off Tucker and save your delusional b!tching for your QAnon message boards,

  46. alton green Says:

WOW, I am truly amazed at how many of you said the truth. Yes it’s wokeness at it worst. Don’t be surprised if there is a mob carrying torched and pitchforks outside your home like the scene from Frankenstein hahaha

  47. SlyPirate Says:

This team has too much talent to play this poorly.

  48. Arn platz Says:

Four key pieces missing from last year’s offense. Jensen cappa marpet and Gronk. Talent not properly coached or talent evaluation was wrong.

    Give Bowles one more year

  49. Arn platz Says:

Forgot to mention the four replacements for those players previously mentioned were either improperly evaluated or coaching is deficient or player not responding to coaching

  50. Arn platz Says:

Joe was there something wrong with my posts? Did i break a community guideline? Apologies if I did.

  51. Brady fan Says:

I’ve been a fan of Brady since he first entered the league. I always took it for granted that the Patriots would get a little bit better each week. Some years injuries slowed the team down but they never gave up. I had high hopes for the Bucs this year but the coaching has been horrible. The Patriots had bad offensive lines some years but they always found ways to get guys open and always took advantage of the other teams weak spots. The current Bucs coaches appear clueless and need to go now as it’s painfully to watch them play. With good coaching they would have easily won the last two games. There is no excuse!

  52. Jerry R Jones Says:

Brady might as well already be gone. We look like what people think, a freaking joke. I hope we lose so bad this year there’s no choice but fire these fools. Arians experiment was a success, but not with these 2 fools. Leftwich and Bowles need to go, now!

  53. sasquatch Says:

The Seahawks are winning with Geno Effing Smith! We have Tom Brady. We have more talent overall. Pete Carroll is just a better coach and Byron Leftwich is incompetent if he can’t get better production out of our group.

  54. ViSyl Says:

Call Sean Payton, hate the guy, but great coach. And he is even a friend of Arians and Brady wants him.

  55. Beej Says:

I’d be happy with BA taking over all things offense. I’m not sure what can be done, considering our O-line, but it can be better than this

  56. Architek Says:

Got to throw Leftwich overboard to salvage the season.

  57. Melvin Junior Says:

“ The NFL has an issue with hiring minority coaches on the sidelines. They don’t get fair opportunities. That being said, Bowles and Leftwich being 3-4 does not help the cause at all and could set the league back another 20 years.”

No-way, “D-Rome.” Every Organization WILL continue hiring who they ‘feel’ at the time is THE Best Candidate (in their own mind) for the job. PERIOD. It is a ‘Business’ FIRST, & they ALL want to WIN, period. The ‘color’ of one’s skin has absolutely, NOTHING to do with it. What do you think is the percentage of ‘White’ coaches in the league compared to the overall population percentage of white-people total, in the United States… I know that the ‘Black’ population is around 12-13%. The percentage of ‘black’ PLAYERS in the league is completely irrelevant, where obviously, not ALL are “qualified” to be a coach in THE NFL… Just as all current and former ‘white’ players are not, as well. Every single bit of this is 100% totally, Media-Driven (wokester divider bs) in THIS day & time. The “race” of the coach would absolutely, NOT factor into the equation whatsoever, At ALL, if not for certain ‘narratives’ being pushed for just the gain of the very FEW… Therefore, totally, BRAINWASHING everyone else.

  58. Jack Sparrow Says:

We can bitch and moan about Bowles and Leftwich to be fired. The Glazers hands are tied behind their back. They will not fire both as the media mob will blast them for months for being a R****t. They are afraid to be sued…. just look at Brian Flores….. another incompetent coach fired and sued the dolphins for the R word and the meddia backed him up.
    Ludicrous take. –Joe

  59. douglas dallier Says:

Something needs to happen asap or many of us will not watch another Bucs game this year. UNDERSTAND JASON!!!!!!!!!!!!

  60. Lakeland Says:

The offense is killing the defense

  61. Deeez NATZ Says:

CBS is so right.Hes black and firing a black man would be the R word…

  62. Bucs since 76 Says:

Keep Leftwich and let Brady call his own plays with Leftwich making sure correct personal are in the game.

  63. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We can’t even say they are tanking to get a draft pick at this point.

Firing him would NOT be considered a ‘R’ move. Get out of here with that stuff. The man is doing a bad job.

If they fire him, who do you think will take over? Either Bruce Arians comes back (doubtful) or Leftwich will finish out the season as interim HC.

  64. Architek Says:

I don’t want to hear nothing about race. This is about performance and nothing about politics and race.

  65. Buczilla Says:

It’s a gosh darn travesty in that it’s nearly no one and no one has been fired yet.

  66. AbucAway Says:

The only “R word” firing him would be is “Right”, as in Right thing.

  67. beano Says:

With a head coaching resume of 24-40 with the Jets, something other than merit got Todd the head coaching job with the Bucs.

  68. sasquatch Says:

Leftwich is doing a bad job. No one on this board is saying firing him would be ray-cyst.

    Dear Ray Cyst,
Bowles was hired because of his accomplishments as a D-coordinator and a leader, and his tenure with the Jets was viewed as crippled by a terrible front office that did not give him talent to work with especially at the QB position. Suggesting he was hired for anything other than his capabilities might be ray-cyst. It remains to be seen whether that will prove to be wrong remains to be seen.

Bowles will likely be given a chance to hire his own coaching staff for next year. He will not be let go after only one year. Leftwich is a different story.

  69. Crickett Baker Says:

If there is no skin in the game it doesn’t matter what color it might have been.

  70. Rod Munch Says:

Bowles is not getting fired, period.

Anyone who legit thinks they’d fire him is literally an idiot. Who exactly takes over for him? Leftwich? LOL!

Now, Leftwich getting fired, there’s something everyone should be able to get onboard with.

The downside is the next man up is Cycle Christensen, a guy so bad as OC, he got Dungy fired when he was last OC here.

It’s a lose-lose-lose-lose-lose situation, unless they can get Arians to come back. But Arians really wants both Bowles and Leftwich to be headcoaches, so he’d never do anything that would cost them in that regard. So the best you can hope for is that Arians is, under the radar, getting involved in the game planning for the week – but I really doubt they’d go as far as giving him some headphones and putting him in the booth – not that there’s anything that says Arians would even accept that job.

  71. Rod Munch Says:

People talking about the r-word are just really stupid, just as stupid as the press that was trying to get Bowles to talk about the r-word when they played Pittsburgh a couple of weeks ago. Bowles completely dismantled the press and dressed them down for always bringing up the r-word, and flat out said people will stop talking about the r-word when the press shuts up about it.

Those thinking Bowles is woke or a token hire, just shut-up already, you sound like an idiot. The Bucs have had a very tip top defense for a few years now under Bowles, and Bowles has previous HC experience. The plan was always for Bowles to take over.

  72. Joe Says:

Bowles is not getting fired, period.

Anyone who legit thinks they’d fire him is literally an idiot. Who exactly takes over for him? Leftwich? LOL!

“This Joe” doesn’t think Bowles is in danger (currently). However, it is fair to ask if the Bucs miss the playoffs and have a losing record if Bowles cannot win with Brady, what are we to expect when he’s starting Kyle Trask, especially when you factor in Bowles is 0-2 with high-draft pick quarterbacks?

Paying a guy not to coach has never prevented the Glazers from pulling the trigger.

  73. Buc1987 Says:

2 words describe this Bucs team.

    Miserable and listless.

    Both sides of the ball.

Hey Tommy welcome to what it’s really like to be a Buc.

  74. sasquatch Says:

The Glazers have never fired a coach after only 1 year. Add in the fact that Bowles was not even given the chance to hire his own staff, I think it’s almost certain that Bowles will be given next year to prove his capabilities. The problem is, it’s hard to hire coaches if you’re on the hot seat. You end up get stuck with guys who are either loyalists (not always bad) or guys who just couldn’t get hired elsewhere. Or internal promotions. Garver OC? Foote DC?

It’s obvious at this point that stepping down wasn’t quite the gift that Arians thought it would be for Bowles. It’s a shame. He’s put him in a no win. If he wins, it’s because he’s supposed to. If he doesn’t, it looks like gross incompetence.

  75. captivajim Says:

the Bucs Defense is NOT playing OK . White was out of position more than 3 X , overran people, missed a few tackles , etc ,,We are NOT the run defense team we were last yr ..

Paying a guy not to coach has never prevented the Glazers from pulling the trigger.

    ———–

True, but Brady is gone after this season, and once he’s gone, it’s full rebuild mode. So why not just let Bowles do that, knowing the team isn’t going to be good in any case, and then, by the time you’re exiting the rebuild, maybe you have a legit young QB prospect that you draft when you stink, well if you have a QB, you can have any coach you want.

If Brady comes back, then sure, give him anything he wants.

But I was talking more about Bowles being fired in season. After the season, again, I assume it’s full rebuild mode, then maybe the Glazers decide to change things up, but I don’t know why you would since you’re not going to be good again for a while, so you’d just end up firing the next guy in 2 seasons anyways.

  77. Vadertime Says:

Bowles will have till the end of the season. If the Bucs spiral into a death dive like the Jets when Bowles was their coach, then he needs to go. You can’t have leadership that squanders the kind of talent the Bucs have. I don’t know what is wrong with the team, but both the offense and defense sucked in their loss to the lowly panthers. A team sporting a 3rd string QB, who traded away their 2 best offensive players and fired a coach who was barely into his 3rd year of a 5 year contract. Bowles needs to fix this or get fired.

  78. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

This is inexcusable. Period. Oh and this season is officially over. As far as I’m concerned the discussion should whether or not the Bucs can land Sean Payton.

  79. Goatfarmer Says:

Bowels must fire Bymoron now so that Licht doesn’t have to. But what an utter cluster hump. Nice.

  80. Goatfarmer Says:

And of course then Licht will have to fire Bowels.

  81. former pats fan Says:

stat i saw after sunday was bucs are 32nd in defense. 31st in offense. all coaches must go. pay what it takes to hire sean payton.
