Another Weak Quarterback On Deck

October 21st, 2022

Bucs head coach defensive playcaller Todd Bowles.

On Sunday, the Bucs lost to a USFL secondary in Pittsburgh, and this Sunday’s they’ll face a USFL quarterback. That’s where Panthers starting QB P.J. Walker was in 2019.

With Panthers quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold injured, the Bucs defense, stacked with four 2021 Pro Bowlers plus Lavonte David, will try to slow the league-worst Panthers offense now led by Walker.

And Carolina traded stud running back Christian McCaffrey and receiver Robbie Anderson this week while the team has been distracted by more trade talk all week.

It should be a fun Sunday for Bucs fans.

What possibly could go wrong for the Tampa Bay defense? How could 1-5 Carolina even score 20 points, something it’s done just twice this season?

Joe’s not sure much will be learned about the Bucs defense on Sunday, even if it takes care of business. And that defense better take care of business!

Yeah, dont get too excited. ANY GIVEN SUNDAY!!!

We should win by 20+ but I know Buc Luck.

If we find a way to lose this one…people better be getting fired!!!!

  2. MadMax Says:

I wonder how much they’re asking for Burns? Man that would be a nice addition!

    A first and JTS?

  3. Dooley Says:

I mean, we better play contain better on the front 7 better than we did against Trubisky who is mobile, but not as fluid in motion as PJ Walker. I just want a game where we’re executing more consistently over the span of 4 quarters, this team needs to see the ball go more in respect to sustaining and finishing drives. Defense needs to do a MUCH better job getting off the field on 3rd & Whatever and keeping contain run & pass!!!

  4. #99 Says:

We play eight to the level of our competition so no game is easy for us

  5. Jerseybuc Says:

Really sucks blowing that game last week. Fully expected to play the ravens at 5-2. Ravens make me nervous not a great team at the moment but they def. Can win

  6. Goatfarmer Says:

Mitch Tribisky looked like Steve Young. This guy will look like Lamar Jackson. Toad will have his guys ready to bust a few more assignments, and the beauty of his coaching is, the guys bust at the most critical times.

  7. Chuckstutz Says:

How bad can we be? Expecting to find out Sunday.
They haven’t shown me a thing this year and it’s not the players.

  8. AKicknTheBucNuts Says:

My nuts are already starting to ache thinking about first down runs up the nuts.

  9. tampabuscsbro Says:

Luckily this is on the defense. Which is currently the best part of the team right now.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

A fantastic game for Byron to try running it again…….we should keep is close enough with our defense…..

They had the league’s worst offense before they traded Anderson & McCaffery….

  11. Craig Says:

A weak QB on paper means nothing to these Bucs. maybe that’s the problem.

Historically the Bucs make weak QBs look like monsters of the midway. I hope they don’t look past this one, we already lost to who might have been our weakest opponent.

  12. adam from ny Says:

    what if:

they get their azzes handed to them in carolina and then sh!t really hits the fan…

it would be super super wild — yet so so interesting

Can we stop saying “What could possibly go wrong”? it happened last week and before and it is jinxing us! lol dont even want to think about that.

some heads need to roll down the plank before this team wakes up….

  15. orlbucfan Says:

Good godalmighty, wonder what distracted fossil12 will do on offense? I have a strong feeling certain team captains on defense had a few serious chats with Bowles and a few bigmouths on their squad. I hope ME13and CG14 did so concerning fossil12.

  16. adam from ny Says:

everyone is saying it’s a must win, we gotta win this one, no room for another loss, etc…

but no one is really talking about if they actually lose the game…

    imagine that…

i don’t think anyone is actually considering it because we have TB12…

it would be completely hitting rock bottom at that point…

things would get wild and the hyenas would be circling one buc

  17. adam from ny Says:

yet i do predict a bucs win

    31-13

or something like that…34-10 or 34-13 or 31-10

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

We should…beat the Panthers all over the place. Should. The only possible way they win is we underestimate their QB. If he starts running ll over the place on us….

  19. SB~LV Says:

    Brady?

  20. Redeemer Says:

Can’t imagine a world where they don’t blow out Carolina. It’s a no win scenario. If they blow them out, you beat a one win team that traded two of their best players. If they eek out a win, you barely beat a one win team. If they lose, the sky is falling. Take these guys out early, and rest up. Short week against the Ravens. Thankfully they’ll be on short rest too. A savings grace is the bucs won’t face a team that’s had extra rest.

  21. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

The Ravens should make anyone nervous, because not only will they be fighting for their playoff life, but they also just signed Desean Jackson!
The Panthers will be easy for us, but the Ravens game IMHO will tell us more about our Team.

  22. captivajim Says:

we should have picked up Robbie Anderson and cut Jones !!!

  23. Mr. Editor Says:

Let’s not look beyond the Panthers. We all know about the pantheon of sub-par Buc-killing QBs, like Derek Anderson, Case Keenum, Paxton Lynch, and now, Mitch Trubisky, who turned into All Pro, All World, Hall of Fame QBs overnight when they played the Bucs.

  24. Natron Says:

Yeah Todd, don’t forget to always run on first down

  25. Pewter Warrior 813 Says:

Bowles and Leftwich are calling the shots so nothing will be easy

    23-16 Bucs win

  26. WillieG Says:

“It should be a fun Sunday for Bucs fans.”

Last Sunday should’ve been a fun Sunday for Bucs fans. EVERYONE thought so.
It wasn’t fun at all. It was beyond disappointing and more than a little worrisome. I do NOT want to start talking about the draft until draft time. From what I saw last Sunday, draft talk might be on the menu Thanksgiving Day.

  27. Dooley Says:

    @Redeemer

if we get beat by Carolina, I’m declaring that you’re a jinx and will politely ask you to not watch another Bucs game this season or speak/project a Bucs “blowout” ever again.

  28. Tbbucs3 Says:

  31. Buczilla Says:

In the past our great to good defenses would look at scrub quarterbacks and start to salivate. These days, scrub quarterbacks (waves at Mitchell Trubisky) salivate at the opportunity to punk our defense and make a name for themselves.

  32. Anonymous Says:

Add him to the Folklore of Trash QB’s who beat the bucs : Simien, Daniel Jones, Pickett/Trubisky, Heinecke, who else am I missing.

  33. Pewter Power Says:

I’d feel better if baker mayfield was starting

  34. EEK Says:

this team does not inspire confidence that it can dominate a poor opponent

if the offense can’t be explosive (it hasn’t been) and the defense can’t own 3rd and long (it does not), then the game will be close and I would expect that

I am betting the under — hopefully I lose but the score is 35-0 and I am wrong about everything

I don’t bet against my favorite team though

  35. Coburn Says:

Caption on picture.. hehehe let’s see how I can make this qb look like a pro bowler…

  36. Redeemer Says:

@Dooley, if they lose, really no point in watching another game. If they do, I will leave this site. I don’t watch the games live anyway. I have NFL game pass, so I have to watch the game after it’s over. The bucs aren’t in my market. I just get the primetime games, and the occasional 1pm.

  37. Bojim Says:

    Backup QB? We’re fckd.

  38. Goatfarmer Says:

Bowelswich are capable of losing each and every game remaining on the schedule. That shouldn’t happen.

But it could. If they can lose to a horribly damaged Steelers team, they can lose to an empty, burning landfill like Carolina.

Go ahead and just call the same plays the defense expects, Bmoron.

And go ahead and call complex jizzey zone coverages without the only brain on your defense, Toad.

Just do it, Toad. Cement your legacy and make Licht’s / Glazers’ decisions a lot easier.

  39. BigMacAttack Says:

Don’t hold your breath because he’s probably going to light up our defense. Cover 2 15 yard cushion for DB’s. No blitz, rush 4 24-10 Panthers 😂 but I sure hope this isn’t the case

  40. Goatfarmer Says:

That was supposed to read “hidden zone coverages.” Sorry.

  41. BigMacAttack Says:

The Question is are the Coaches going to try something different or more of the same, expecting different results. If it’s more of the same and we’re playing to lose, why not put Trask in and give him a shot. I guarantee with these receivers, Trask will put up at least 5 TDs, not a doubt in my mind. Tom Brady is scared to get hit with this O line and so is Blaine. Trask isn’t afraid of anything. Put me in Coach!!!

  42. BigMacAttack Says:

If you want to see TB12 play better, start Trask and watch how fast Brady gets back to perfect. Same thing with dumb dumb Devin White. Sit him on the bench and see how quickly his head gets back in the game. Do the job, stop making mistakes, stupid penalties and dropping passes or ride the pine. Get on that bench and stfu!

  43. Bucsfan13 Says:

I wish we could block these Trask fanboys. I don’t hate Trask, but there is a reason why fans call Trask fanboys delusional. I really wish Trask attended a college in a different state. His fanboys wouldn’t be so arrogant. Trask couldn’t beat out Gabbert. I’m sure Godwin and Evans want Trask in at QB lol

  44. ClwJB Says:

This better be a steam rolling by the D – but watch DJ Moore catch 10 balls anyway

Their D isn’t bad and we may struggle against their front 7 as we usually do, especially inside, they have some size at DT

    I expect another nail-biter honestly

How could anyone have any faith in what we have seen this far

  45. sasquatch Says:

Lose this one, we’re done. Stick a fork in us, the season is over.

  46. GenocideD Says:

Why does it always seem that we play good against Good qbs and embarrassing against turd qbs?

  47. Faspro Says:

It really ain’t that fun beating the worst team in the league…Pffft

  48. Conte Piscatelli Says:

Here is the problem, yes he isn’t a good QB but we have no tape on him this year or on this team playing without CMC. So our gamelan is going in blind. There is no way we know what to expect to see Sunday. This team, with Bowles as DC has struggled in these types of games. He does better when he has a clear understanding of how a team wants to attack us. I’m guessing we give up 400 yards in this one.

  49. beano Says:

“Bucsfan13 Says: Trask couldn’t beat out Gabbert.”

That’s a lie Trask haters use because they have nothing to go on. Trask has never been allowed to compete with Gabbert. Even before training camp the QB Coach said Trask would not be #2. Zero competition for the #2 spot.

A real competition would be putting in Trask and Gabbert with the same players and compare. They didn’t do that because they were afraid what would happen. Trask played preseason with nothing but garbage men and still outshined both Gabbert and Brady in the last preseason game.

But haters gonna hate. Trask is a white boy from UF and that’s three strikes.

  50. beano Says:

“Bucsfan13 Says: I wish we could block these Trask fanboys.”

Nobody is stopping you from ogling at all those Brady posters on your bedroom wall.

    Eagles, NFC East, 71%
    Chiefs, AFC West, 68%
    49ers, NFC West, 54%
    Ravens, AFC North, 53%
    Titans, AFC South, 49%

So you see, fellas, the sky isn’t falling just yet.

As long as we win this game against the Panthers, LOL.

  53. Cobraboy Says:

    We’ve heard this stuff before.

Walker lit up the XFL. Certainly, the XFL is not the NFL, but the kid has shown he can play, and this is his big chance to prove it.

    Nickel Cigar Indian: “Chance.”

Naive Tourist: “I thought Indians said ‘how’?”

Indian: “Me know how. Me need chance.”

  54. BigMacAttack Says:

I watched Trask play for the Gators, a lot. The kid has skills and is fearless. He’s strong and will run the ball. I liked the pick but 2’nd round was a reach. Problem like beano said is he hasn’t been given a chance. Gabbert will never win you anything and Tom Brady has to be hurt, the way he’s under-throwing passes. Brady is also getting scared in the pocket. I remember a QB named Drew Bledsoe who was lighting it up and then got hurt. Some nobody skinny punk kid named Tom Brady took over his team and never looked back. I don’t know what’s up with TB12 but something is off big time. I’m not beholden to any player. I just want to win. If Brady is hurt, let him heal up and get well. The Bucs have weapons on offense and a suspect O line needs a young strong QB that can run if he needs to. I like Trask but our Coaches I’m losing faith in fast.

  55. Pewter Power Says:

If trask was starting I’m starting to doubt we’d have a worse record since we have issues everywhere except quarterback. Even Gabbert could manage to go 3-3 with this roster

  56. DoooshLaRue Says:

Ah yes, the final “cupcake” game of our 3 game “tuneup” before the Ravens.
I heard that we “literally” can’t lose.

    Anywho………why don’t I feel very assured……?

  57. Redeemer Says:

beano, it’s always a competition. To suggest Trask hasn’t been given the opportunity to beat out Gabbert is just plain wrong. The coaches see these guys every day in camp. The NFL is built on competition. They think Gabbert gives them the better chance to win. That’s why he’s the backup. Gabbert sucks, and Trask is worse

  58. beabn Says:

“Redeemer Says: Gabbert sucks, and Trask is worse”

Unlike Gabbert, Trask has never taken an NFL snap, so you have zero factual basis for saying that. So what are the real reasons you don’t like Trask? He’s lily white? He okayed for UF? It’s easy to slander somebody online; it’s hard to back it up with facts. And you have none.

  65. Defense Rules Says:

CaptivaJim … Robbie Anderson would’ve been a nice pickup, but Panthers surely wouldn’t have traded him within the NFC South. That was a really bad trade for the Panthers, but great for the Cardinals (2024 6th Rnd pick and 2025 7th Rnd pick AND the Panthers ate his CAP Hit to the tune of $10.3 mil dead CAP in 2022 & $9.7 mil in 2023). Guessing that they were really pissed about his sideline outburst at the coaches.

  66. Defense Rules Says:

Sunday’s game will be the perfect opportunity for JBFers to FOCUS on the Bucs’ OLine & the Bucs’ DLine. The weak link on this team is in the trenches. If the guys we’ve got in the trenches can’t dominate a #27 offense & #22 defense weakened by injuries the future won’t look good.

  70. PassingThru Says:

Unlike Trask, Brady moved up from fourth string QB in his rookie year to second string QB at the very beginning of his second year. Belichick even mentioned that Brady outplayed Drew Bledsoe (a Pro Bowl QB) during that preseason.

“PassingThru Says: Unlike Trask, Brady moved up from fourth string QB in his rookie year to second string QB at the very beginning of his second year. Belichick even mentioned that Brady outplayed Drew Bledsoe (a Pro Bowl QB) during that preseason.”

In his rookie year, Brady appeared in 1 game, threw 3 passes, completed 1 pass (33% completion rate), for a passer rating of 42.4. He sucked.

As for supposedly “outplaying” Bledsoe during preseason before Brady’s second season, Trask “outplayed” Brady in the only game Brady played in this preseason: 99.6 (Trask) > 87.5 (Brady).

    Thanks for playing.

  73. PassingThru Says:

    @beano

You’re not even remotely correct in the comparison. The preseason consists of both games and practices. Brady opened eyes during his second preseason during practices as well as the few times he was inserted into games. They liked his accuracy, quick release, pocket presence, and his avoidance of turning the ball over. Bledsoe was one of the best QBs in the league, and yet he clearly held the ball too long, sometimes made throws that led to INT opportunities, and had trouble consistently moving the sticks, the latter of which was something that Brady demonstrated during games and practices.

As a practical matter, Brady played a bit during the preseason and at times flashed that he had NFL starter ability during one of those games when Belichick decided to leave him in longer. Brady was playing against presumptive NFL players (not future PE teachers and insurance salesmen). Some of the smarter fans noticed it too, as Brady seemingly played for more minutes than expected. It was also documented in the local press that Brady was throwing a high rate of completed passes

  74. beano Says:

    PassingThru,

Thanks for ignoring the inconvenient fact that Trask outperformed Brady in the only game Brady played this preseason: 99.6 RTG (Trask) to 87.5 RTG (Brady). And, Trask did it with garbage players. Thanks for playing.

  75. PassingThru Says:

(continued) against the New England defense (starters and backups), and that is worth mentioning as he outperformed Bledsoe in that regard as well. For the record, NE had a better defensive secondary than the Bucs do today.

Trask… no. Trask had some very, very ugly preseason practices. To his credit he didn’t completely fall apart because some of those early practices were absolutely terrible as he had trouble completing passes and threw picks. And of course that was on the heels of the coaching staff acknowledging that Trask wasn’t QB2. He hadn’t shown the right stuff his previous, rookie preseason.

The saving grace is that Trask did look better later in the preseason after his early flops, but then the preseason has changed since the NFL changed its format from a 16 game preseason to a 17 game preseason. You’d have to have your head up your posterior not to notice that starters have less minutes during games; most of the evaluation for the first and second teams are made during practice. The better players on NFL teams are not kept in bubble wrap during the preseason as a precaution due to the longer season, and the guys who are considered longer shots to make the roster play far more minutes now during preseason games. Brady and the Buc vets didn’t play for many minutes, and when they did they faced off against the better playing units. Trask was facing off against guys in street clothes who are now realizing that their NFL dream is over.

I don’t hate Trask, though I hated the pick. The Bucs needed a CB, it was the position of weakness in terms of quality and durability. That draft featured an unusual amount of depth in swing, developmental OTs. That would have made sense as the Bucs were a bit thin there. It turned out in retrospect they needed both. Instead they picked a QB which made zero sense as Super Bowl windows tend to be very brief.

Trask as a player projects to be a backup QB; that’s his upside. You keep mentioning his mobility, but he hasn’t shown that rare ability to hit receivers while on the move, and needless to say he’s no running QB either. In other words, he can extend a play but the overall net result is negligible. His arm is adequate but not great, his decision-making doesn’t stand out, he has shown tremendous inconsistency. He cannot elevate his game to the point where he dresses for games. Got that? He’s inactive week in, week out. In other words, if he was the college QB for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the locals wouldn’t be giving him so many naive, homespun accolades.

  76. beano Says:

“He cannot elevate his game to the point where he dresses for games.”

He elevated his game to where he outplayed Gabbert and Brady in the preseason. LMAO.

He’s inactive because as per Bucs QB coach’s own preseason comments, he’s not going to be allowed to be #2 no matter what happens, because Brady wants Gabbert’s experince on the sideline, and Brady gets what he wants. Got it? Didn’t think so. You’re a Masshole.

  77. Jeff Says:

Weak QB vs Clueless Todd Bowles! This will be a very close game!

  78. JeffreyLane77 Says:

For some reason this team has a way of making second string quarterbacks seem like world beaters. This team will play down to thier level. Panthers are tanking the season but Tampa will figure out a way to keep it close. After the last couple games I wouldn’t be surprised by a loss
