“You Don’t Replace A Star Like That”

September 19th, 2022

The HC isn’t upbeat.

Todd Bowles had a chance to be upbeat about the Week 3 return of Julio Jones and Chris Godwin this afternoon and didn’t go there.

Bowles joined SiriusXM NFL Radio and was asked about the Mike Evans suspension for Sunday’s

“That’ll be a big loss for us, especially with the guys we have down,” Bowles said of the Evans suspension. “You know, we’ll go into the game, we feel like we have some good depth there, and we have some decent practice squad receivers that can come in and step up, but you don’t replace a star like that. So hopefully something happens during the week [with Evans’ appeal]. If not, we’re going to go with what we got and we’re going to gameplan it.”

Joe took pause hearing that. Joe was hoping Bowles would reference players coming back from injury versus “decent practice squad receivers.”

On Julio Jones’ knee injury, Bowles said, “hopefully he’s close” before repeating “hopefully” when it comes to Julio’s latest problem.

This is exactly what I said yesterday. I am starting to think I am as smart as Todd!!!

Can I get a job Todd, I want a Special Role with the team like BA. I promise I won’t cause any fights!!!

  3. CrackWise Says:

All in all, this is a perfect game to continue to get EVERYONE XP!

  4. unbelievable Says:

Counting on guys like Julio, Hicks, etc., was always a gamble.

Playing GB without Evans, Godwin and Jones is definitely going to be an uphill battle.

Hopefully BP is ready to rock in the spot light. Maybe Gage can get open for more than 5 yards at a time as well?

  5. TombsEN Says:

Crackwise, I hope you really do not think you are as smart as Bowles. I mean why would he give any information out that could help Greenbay??? I’m starting to agree with what Sapp said so many years ago.

  6. Biff Barker Says:

    Don’t worry, we got Darden.

    I miss Tyler Johnson.

  7. Rod Munch Says:

Well the good news for the Bucs is that Rodgers is absolutely terrible versus the Bucs. He has a career 74.4 QB rating vs the Bucs. It’s by far his worst QB rating vs any team. The Bucs are the only team where Rodgers has thrown more INTs than TDs. In fact Rodgers has thrown 9 INTs vs the Bucs in 5 games, which is his 2nd most INTs for any team he’s played against – the Bears are 1st with 10 INTs, but in 28 games.

The amazing part is most of those games vs Tampa have been against bad Bucs teams. For whatever reason, Tampa gives him a hard time.

Also RayJay is in his head. In 2009 he complained about the grass being hard, in 2014 he claimed that the surface caused a calf injury which is why he lost in the playoffs that year.

If Evans does miss the game, I don’t think it’s a huge deal, as it’s going to be up the defense to frustrate Rodgers and to get him throwing a fit. And unlike when Brady throws a fit, and gets mad and gets better, Rodgers, when he throws a fit, just quits on his team.

  8. Redeemer Says:

My guess is Brady will be destroying tablets left and right on Sunday. The Packers have very capable corners.

  9. Josh Says:

Good thing we got Darden to run the wrong routes and return punts 3 yards. I’d rather have Tyler Johnson or the current version of Joe Jurevicius. Or maybe we can see if Suh wants to play receiver. Not good but look at who Rodgers is throwing the ball too. Gonna be another defensive showdown..

  10. geno711 Says:

    @Redeemer

Because all teams with capable corners beat the Bucs and Brady (sarcasm).

We are on a 24-5 streak. You are on an 0-2 streak for the season.

  11. Redeemer Says:

geno I actually predicted the bucs to win 17-14 against the Saints. I also had them running the cowboys into the ground. Look it up pal. That makes you 0-2.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

JOE is on an 0-2 streak and will probably pick the Packers……let’s hope he goes 0-3.

We will have to rely on our defense again…..and I think we can count on them…..We need to stop their run game & I think they will run a lot.

If we are real fortunate, we’ll get Godwin & Jones back…..

  13. Goatfarmer Says:

The Bears ran the ball all over the Packers.

Activate Sneak. The rookie White looks like he’s trying to analyze a pizza to make sure it has all his toppings on it before hitting the hole. Too green. Not impressed.

  14. Tye Says:

    Disheartening!…
Signs that Bowles doesn’t get it as a HC….
talking up 1 player instead of the other 52..
WITHOUT Evans, the Bucs started scoring and beat the Saints….
The Bucs will be fine, especially if Julio Jones can be full go and get Perriman more involved..

  15. adam from ny Says:

    yeah activate sneak

  16. CrackWise Says:

    @TombsEN

No I don’t think I am as smart as Todd. As it turns out, it just so happens he is as dumb as me….. Wait, what!!!

    Whats going on here?

  17. CrackWise Says:

    @Tye

Disheartening that you failed the reading and comprehension test in elementary school, high school and maybe college.

  18. 1sparkybuc Says:

Thompson catches everything thrown his way.

  19. Goatfarmer Says:

Thompkins looked better to my eye than Geiger, but Cyril Grayson is still out there in the ether and he is another who has demonstrated he can make a real difference when it’s crunch time. Whatever.

Should be able to run the ball much better against the Puckers.

  20. CrackWise Says:

I just saw that Tyler Johnson still looking really good on game days. This week he was hosting a championship score game party because he can’t make it the game day roster down there in Huston.

They must have an even better receiving crew then we do. Let’s send a 1rst round pick to them to get TJ back.

Thompkins looked legit to me as well. Would love to see what we have in him for sure!!!

And if Grayson is on the streets for real. I wonder if we are not seriously considering bringing him back at this point???

  21. Mike Says:

Bucs need to cut Scottie Miller and bring back Grayson. Honestly don’t know what they were thinking.

  22. Jack Sparrow Says:

Bucs better stock up with a lot of microsoft surface tablets, Brady will be throwing at least 10 of those next week. GO BUCS!!!

  23. stpetebucfan Says:

As always a real gathering of positivity here. Again we’re all Russian..”Don’t worry things will be worse tomorrow”. A common Russian refrain and frequently the prevailing attitude here at JBF.

It SHOULD be a good game. We have a competent FG kicker, a GREAT punter and some new athletes who have infused our ST with real hustle and success.
It’s the NFL or as the late great Chris Thomas used to say…the No Freaking Logic league..another way of saying on any given Sunday.

I fear the Packs newer ground and pound game more than Rodgers. Whatever I suspect the Bucs will show up. LOL

  24. CrackWise Says:

Cant afford to cut any known assets at this point. Thats what the preseason is for.

I will keep saying this until week 5.

The goal is to establish a team identity. We knew coming into this season it was going to be a transition year. Thankfully the GOAT returned, and we can make it a two-year process.

Coach is doing the right thing for all of us and the young guys. He is establishing us as a SMASH MOUTH football team. The GOAT is helping to manage the games on the field.

Once we get the first 4 games out of the way and everyone is no longer panicking because of the young OL, TEs and DL look so different. And everyone sees that The Grave Diggers are out for blood. As well as the OL is kick arse and taking names.

You will see that transition back to a no risk it no biscuit mentality. Which just means, we are gonna do whatever we want and you cant stop us.

That said, looks like we found our new LT when Donnie decides to retire. Dude looks awesome keying in on him while rewatching the game.

Kyle Trask is going to have ZERO excuse behind this OL next year. He just cant pull a JW and run around till he gets sacked or wait to throw the ball to the lowest percentage option on a given play.

  25. Allen Lofton Says:

Packers lost to the Vikings and beat the Bears so far – Bucs down receivers 5, 6, 7

Don’t know if Godwin, Jones and Gage are available – we just have to go with who’s healthy and relay on the Defense – We can still beat them because their receivers are not great

  26. dmatt Says:

I agree, Deven Thompkins catches every ball that comes his way. He’s a diamond in the rough. He instinctively attacks the ball at its highest point. He’s the type of player, despite his size, gravitates with an urge to make a play. If he played sandlot football with the big boys, he would be the type of sandlot baller that everyone wants on their team, especially as a return man. He may not have Scotty’s speed but he’s fast enough with quickness, n have something Scotty n Darden collectively doesn’t have…heart n courage to go make a play. Despite what others may think about him not being drafted, n lack of size, he’s a true natural on the gridiron. I’d take him over Perriman, Miller, Geiger, n Darden any day. Thompkins has the “It” factor, somehow coaches gonna have to figure “It” out.

  27. Trask To The Future Says:

WHO IS THIS “RUSSELL GAGE” I KEEP HEARING ABOUT?

I don’t see him on my team.

  28. Buccaneric Says:

Bowles just said he will have it figured out. He’ll game plan for it.

    And all these comments.

    Go bucs!

  29. Ash Says:

I’d like to see them activate Thompkins for the green bay game I too think he might be a special player with my fan eyes lol go bucs

  30. Bangkok Buc Says:

Would be nice if Gage can make an appearance and the coaches get some Stick-em onto Scooter’s gloves.

  31. gotbbucs Says:

Well, considering the awful decisions they made at cut time in the reciever room they’re just going to have to lay in this bed that they made.
They don’t trust Darden on the field even if literally everyone else is injured or ejected and Scotty Miller gets rag dolled with any contact. Sure would be nice to have Tyler Johnson right about now.
Julio better get a pregame shot in that knee and get his rear end on the field.

  32. Craig Says:

No, you can’t replace Evans, but bringing Tompkins from the practice would be better than watching Scotty drop lovely passes.

I also don’t know why Darden counts as a receiver, he is a punt returner, and not very good at that either. He stands on the sideline and doesn’t even carry his helmet around.

  33. Goatfarmer Says:

Darden can hold on a good run, though. He can negate a great play because he can’t block so he has to hold. There’s that.

  34. rick Says:

everybody saying you can replace evan has to stop talking immediately. cmon get a grip guys
