Tom Brady Explains His Trust In Luke Goedeke And Robert Hainsey

September 8th, 2022

Starting left guard Luke Goedeke.

Tom Brady will have a couple of young, green-as-grass dudes protecting him on Sunday night.

Hopefully, Joe won’t hear their names and they won’t be talked about on Monday.

Brady was asked today about why he has gained trust in starting rookie guard Luke Goedeke and first-time starter Robert Hainsey at center.

The Goat says he likes the commitment. Frankly, Joe believes Brady’s faith could be why neither has been replaced.

“Showing up every day and not making the mental errors and, you know, taking things to heart when things don’t go well for them,” Brady said of why Goedeke and Hainsey have been earning his trust. “You know, and not blaming people for the mistakes, learning from the mistakes and improving. You know, showing everybody that you really care about what you’re doing — you care about what we’re trying to accomplish, and you care about the role that you’re in and you care about the fact that your teammates and your coaches put you in a position where they feel like they can trust you. That’s what you like about young players, that it means a lot to’em and they want to show up and do a great job for everyone.

“Because football’s a dangerous sport. You know, if they don’t do a great job, they put other people at risk. And if you don’t know what you’re doing, it can be dangerous for the backs and quarterback, and vice versa. You know, no one wants to be hung out to dry. So we’re all out there together; we’re all trying to protect each other.

“And the more that you feel that guys know what to do and they care about they’re doing, you gain more trust in them.”

Joe’s glad all the offensive line talk is winding down. In three short days, Goedeke and Hainsey get the ultimate test. They don’t have to be great. Good should be enough to get the Bucs their first “W.”

  1. BucBrady Says:

Sooooo, he trusts them because of how they handle their mistakes—–great?

This does not help increase confidence in the current state of our Oline.

  2. Marine Buc Says:

I really hope Goedeke doesn’t get rag-dolled like he did against Indy this preseason or it’s going to be U-G-L-Y (you ain’t got no alibi)…

I’m glad TB12 is the fastest draw in the west.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It really depends on what kind of mistakes & how many……

    If Brady’s OK…..TBBF is OK….

  4. #8 Says:

Best part is, assuming health, the O-Line gets better each week simply with experience. Batter than a full vet-line that sucks…it’d never change. Hope is nice.
    Suh.

  5. LouisFriend Says:

Whatever he has to say and do that keeps him upright, productive and healthy works for me.

  6. Anonymous Says:

I love that he basically told the line don’t get me or the running backs killed. This OL has the biggest pressure on them in football because of who they’re protecting. We’ll see how they handle that pressure. I know Tom talked about being patient with them. I don’t buy it one bit. Tom transforms into something else on the field. He’s an emotional guy. He will definitely chew them out if they’re getting manhandled out on the field.

I wouldn’t say that he trusts the OL. It’s kinda like he doesn’t have a choice. He’s said the LG position was a question mark. They’re on a short leash

  7. A Says:

I’m looking forward to seeing creativity and game planning. (min our weaknesses / max our strengths and attacking their weaknesses) I don’t want to see 5 WRs and tell Tom to find someone open – Save that for the 4th Q if we are down –
We can’t beat the Saints or Rams that way so lets start preparing now 🙂

    Go Bucs!

  8. Posey99 Says:

I’m really not that concerned. Those two are going against Vita vea and Nicks in practice. You can get a good evaluation at least from a power stand point.

  9. Buccos Says:

If Brady wanted some different guys he would have gotten them. Sometimes being young is good. More strength, stamina and energy as well as a good attitude. These guys were both premium picks. Licht has a great track record drafting O- line players. So let’s see them play and pray to God Jensen makes it back sooner rather than later

  10. Jack Sparrow Says:

    Go Bucs!

  11. Pewter Power Says:

The ultimate test lol said by no one ever about the Dallas cowboys

  12. BT Says:

Why do screens normally go to the flats? Why can’t they go up the middle?

  13. George Says:

Brady knows he is in trouble

This whole situation sheer incompetence by Lichti and Bowles

  14. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Marine buc – not sure what game you were watching, but “getting rag-dolled” is just wrong. Go back and rewatch the game. Both young guys played hard and were successful. I like the glass eater mentality, and I see two hungry dudes.

  15. Marine Buc Says:

    @ 74

You go watch it again. I watched it several times. #90 Grover Stewart threw Goedeke around like a rag-doll while we were on our own 10 yard line.

Three run plays in a row Stewart completely dominated Godedeke. We had to punt from our own 3 yard line…

If this is a glimpse into the future it could spell trouble for our offense.

I’m not labeling Goedeke a bust or being “mean” I’m just trying to be realistic…

  16. Buccos Says:

Cappa got ragdolled in his first preseason too. And then regular season rolled around and he never missed a beat. Obviously multiple people have confidence in them. I do not foresee a problem

  17. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Buccos

You are correct. I agree. I do compare Goedeke to Cappa. They are similar in many ways. Capps struggled his rookie year and we should expect the same from Goedeke.

I understand Buc fans defending Goedeke. I want him to be as good as Marpet as well. But it ain’t happening this season.

  18. Cobraboy Says:

He left out “those two have been practicing against two of the biggest bada$$ defensive linemen, and two most outstanding inside linebackers in the NFL for weeks now, so maybe Dallas will be a break.”

    (I only half kid.)

  19. CrackWise Says:

    Marine Buc

Hainsey, Leveret and Goedeke > Cappa and Marpet as a rookie prospects.

You people, you just want to find a problem in everything and refuse to look at the facts.

So, if you want to keep projecting doom based on skills. START WITH THE BASICS.

Sorry if I spelled the names wrong but you get the point. OR DO YOU, ya know?

  20. Marine Buc Says:

    @ CrackWuse

    I respectfully disagree.

It’s not like I am hoping for Goedeke to suck. I take off my pewter colored glasses when I evaluate my team.

LG is our #1 weakness. Special Teams is our #2 weakness. Our starting QB is 45 and is struggling with his personal life – that is our #3 weakness.

    Everything else is looking good.

  21. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

And add the fact that there really is no Plan B…lol

  22. Defense Rules Says:

I don’t think our OLine is gonna be the problem that some fear it is. No one’s gonna let Tom Brady get beaten up (although that’s exactly what every opponent will be trying to do because he’s so critical to this offense).

There are a lot of things that our OC can do to keep that from happening, to include keeping a running back AND a tight end help with the blocking. More runs, more quick passes, more screens just for starters. Bucs coaches aren’t stupid. They know which side their bread is buttered on. We’ll protect Brady at all cost.

  23. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

Agreed. It will be interesting to see the “adjustments” BL is able to make in order to compensate for our obvious weaknesses…

I just hope Goedeke doesn’t get rag-dolled on a regular basis – like he did against the Colts – three plays in a row on our own 10 yard line.

  24. MadMax Says:

If Brady and the coaches are goo, Im good. Lets see what happens.

Test 1 coming up! Win it Luke and Robert!

  25. firethecannons Says:

He is talking to them he is answering your question and telling them what they need to hear, Brady speaks for a purpose.

  26. AbucAway Says:

Battle is the Great Redeemer. It is the fiery crucible in which true heroes are forged. The one place where all men truly share the same rank, regardless of what kind of parasitic scum they were going in.

  27. Bucsfan13 Says:

@Marine Buc. I have no idea what game people were watching if they don’t think Goedke got manhandled that game. It was embarrassing and I know DL watched that film in their meeting room and are salivating at the thought of facing him. I’m sure Tommy boy played that video in the film room hundreds of time as motivation for Goedke. People need to be honest with themselves. The interior OL is a major issue, especially at LG. And I completely dispute the fact that Brady is happy with our OL current state. These guys have the shortest least.

Micah Parsons already sent out a warning single and said he was trying to retire Brady on Sunday night. I sure hope Tom played that video for the OL.

  28. Winny Testaverde Says:

I trust Goedeke…to pick a fight with a 180lb. fella at a bar only at this point. Came in with false tough guy bravado and got pushed around like a shopping cart at WalMart. It happens…he’s probably not ready but…ready or not…

  29. MadMax Says:

If this fails, its not too late to put Luke at a position he knows (RT) and move Wirfs to LG….i know, I KNOW, I got jumped about this idea the last time I posted it….but protecting Brady’s blind side and inside is at utmost importance….and Hainsey needs all the help he can get in there. Wirfs could make it work.

  30. Defense Rules Says:

Marine Buc … The danger in series like the one you described is that the youngster lets his opponent ‘get into his head’. Gut feel is that Brady will be paying particular attention to that possibility and will do everything he can to not let that happen (or to fix it quickly if it does).

  31. Defense Rules Says:

Bucsfan13 … ‘These guys have the shortest leash.’

Given our OLine DEPTH at the moment, what alternative do we have? Goedeke & Hainsey will either be strengthened by fire, or get burned by it.

  32. Defense Rules Says:

MadMax … ‘If this fails, its not too late to put Luke at a position he knows (RT) and move Wirfs to LG’.

I still can’t see that as a solution Max because our OLine has precious little ‘chemistry’ as it is. Flipping positions (that neither has been practicing at) would destroy what little they’ve developed.

Bucs may very well go several games here at the beginning of the season consistently using Max Protect packages (to include bringing in an extra Olineman). I’m confident we’ll protect Brady at all costs.

  33. steele Says:

Good teammates, we’re in it together, we’re good guys, we work hard, we learn from mistakes, etc. etc. You’ll never hear otherwise. From any of them.

All that matters is results on the field. We’ll see. Pray that what we saw in preseason is not what is to come.

  34. Oneilbuc Says:

Man look he’s a rookie give him a chance we do this to all of our young players . I’m looking at Josh Allen and he is becoming a hall of famer and I remember his first 2 years in the league they were saying it’s time for the Bills to start looking to draft another quarterback. But Buffalo stayed patient with him and the fan base did and look at him now. When are y’all going to start giving these young players a chance??

  35. PassingThru Says:

Did anyone expect Brady to say they sucked, or that he had deep concerns?

We’re stuck in preseason happy talk.

  36. Bowles4President Says:

This is all coming from a 6th round draft pick who won 7 Super Bowls without an elite spiral.
Effort, focus, and belief are HUGE in this beautiful sport.

    Happy Football Season!!!!

  37. RobSinger Says:

People have doubted what Brady says for over 20 years. And he has consistently made every one of them eat crow.

When are you people gonna learn that his personal issues do not affect his game, he has spent a career making adjustments because of O-Line and receiver problems, and he is NOT coming back to go 10-6 or 11-7?
