“Tom Asked Me What Route I Wanted”

September 13th, 2022

Time for a couple of fun facts.

First, Mike Evans leads all active players in career touchdown catches.

Yes, Evans is that good where it counts. How good historically? With his acrobatic touchdown grab on Sunday night in Dallas, Evans passed Dez Bryant and Hall of Fame receiver James Loftin in career TD catches. Evans now has 76, which ranks tied for 34th all-time with Fred Biletnikoff and Harold Jackson.

Evans talked about the his end zone grab with the Buccaneers Radio Network and noted that it came by request and the throw was perfect.

“Tom asked me what route I wanted [in the huddle],” Evans said, adding that his chemistry with Brady is spot on and older players don’t really need preseason action.

Now Evans just has to break the hex the Saints have on him. Evans has just eight catches in the last four regular season games against New Orleans.

I know the Saints have had his number, but last year Mike was beating Lattimore often. Tom just wasn’t looking for him.

  2. lambeau Says:

That’s cool to know Tom asks him what route he wants–that’s trust.

Evans beats lattimore a lot go look at the all 22 from any gm. While being grabbed and held all the time.

  4. Hodad Says:

We need to pound the rock against the Saints. When we do pass, Lenny, or Ko needs to be Tom’s personal protector. Would love to see Lenny put a Parsons on Cam Jordan!

  5. Crickett Baker Says:

So..did Mike make a play call? Or what?

  6. BigMacAttack Says:

We may be fortunate enough to be looking at the next GOAT at receiver if he plays for a few more years. If ME13 isn’t already a 1’st ballot HOF’r then they need to end the HOF farce. They’ve already snubbed too many Bucs and Why isn’t Ronde and Simeon in there? Oh because they’re Bucs and Ira doesn’t care enough to plead their case as well as he should. Let’s make that Happen, Ira. It’s been long enough. No more BS.

  7. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Youngbuc -I agree. They play him dirty like the slimy saints they are. Perhaps he’s not targeted as often then to protect him since anytime Mike gets the ball thrown Lattimore tackles him early/before the ball arrives? A perfect example is his TD last season.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So, let me get this straight……Byron sent the play in……Tom, ask Mike what route he wants”

  9. A Bucs Fan Says:

@TBBF It seems that way! Tom even said in his “W. video” he shared on twitter that he took a “Tuddie” away from Lenny and gave it to Mike.

  10. D-Rok Says:

“No, Tom, I don’t want to chip Parsons – let Lenny handle that. How ’bout one of them sick fades?”

    And the rest is history.

  11. Buc4evr Says:

Agree bigmacattack, Ronde and Sim not being in the HOF is total BS, especially since Lynch is in.

Mike Evans gets no love from the national media and he too will probably be snubbed by the HOF voters.

  12. MonkeyMan Says:

How f’ing cool is that!?!?! Brady asks him what he wants, and then Mike makes an unreal one handed grab. LOVE IT!!!

  13. Oxycondoms Says:

Patterson was getting nice gains on the ground vs the saints on Sunday

  14. Buccos Says:

ME13 should be a first ballot HOF’r. He is almost impossible to cover in the red zone. And most of his career he played with subpar QB’s. Imagine if he had played his whole career with Brady.

  15. Ed Says:

Seriously doubt that the HOF can snub Evans when he has the records he has. Barring injury he’ll have 10 consecutive 1000 yard seasons. That is certainly HOF
material without even considering his touchdowns and value to the team and community.

He may not get the publicity but when Ira goes into his presentation he’ll have a Royal Flush to play.

  16. ElioT Says:

    Godzilla!!!

So lucky to have this man on our team and in the community.

    Go Bucs!

  17. Dooley Says:

1TD closer to reaching 100 career TDs, and I’d bet he’ll surpasss 10,000 career yards by the bye week.

  18. Mojo Says:

Saints and hexes don’t really go together in reality! lbs

But I sure hope Evans plays better on Sunday!

  19. Bucsfan13 Says:

The first game against the Saints we actually had success moving the ball against the Saints. I would say it’s been the best game offensively by the game. I watched the all 22, and Mike was open on some plays, but Godwin was running wide open, and Brady targeted him more. I don’t know what Brady’s progression with Mike was on some routes. We should have won that game. We took the lead, but our D couldn’t hold Siemien from moving the ball. We also had stupid penalties.

The key to beating the Saints is limiting turnovers, and Brady needs to be better at protecting the ball. The Saints do hold and play sticky coverage, and the receivers need to be aggressive and attack the ball. You have to really thread the needle on some throws. ATL lost that game against the Saints because Mariota turned the ball over, and they had issues getting the ball in the EZ.

Some fans think Winston gave them our playbook. I think he did give them some insights into what type of checks we may have and what route combinations are certain formations. We’ve had issues against them prior to Brady’s arrival and Winston’s departure. The offense we trotted out on Sunday is very different than the offense Winston played in. I think we definitely need to mix it up against the Saints.

The Saints will be pouring over the film of us against Dallas. They will prepare to stop the run. They finally have to respect our running game. Like Lenny said after the game, we were almost dead last in rushing last year. Teams didn’t respect our run game. Now we gave them something to think about. That’s why i need some PLAY ACTION more this game.

  20. J Ghotier Says:

I love how the Broadcast team freaks out at catches like that when they happen or Mahomes throws a sidearm ball rolling to his opposite side, but this incredible catch barely got its notice. That was some bad Network broadcasting there.

  21. unbelievable Says:

Yup, Mike was actually open quite a bit in one of those games against NO last year.

We need to not shoot ourselves in the foot early. That’s been the issue the last 4 times we’ve played in the regular season. We get down early, become 1 dimensional, and then their D-line just tees off against us. Which is especially worrisome if Donovan Smith can’t go.

Need the run game to be strong again, but we also have to not be too predictable with it. Would like to see some bubble screens as well. (But NOT those WR screens to the outside, the Saints have been all over those plays in recent years)

I don’t think that play could be run any better by ANY NFL QB receiver combo.

It took a perfect pass, a sick catch, to beat an ALL PRO DB Diggs!

As one of the talking heads said before the game Mike Evans is the best receiver in the NFL to not get any talk about being the best. Who is better at this point?

  24. Buc50 Says:

Great thing about this game is that Lattimore can’t hang all over Evans like he normally does with the emphasis on reducing downfield contact. I expect a big game from the Bucs receivers.

  25. Carl L Says:

Great defense effort! Can’t win them all unles we wil the first one. Now beat dem saints! Go Bucs!

  26. Carl L Says:

Lotta cowboys gonna be sore this week from tackling Lenny. One’s gonna be sore from a Lenny block.

Sounds like a summary of the Tampa Bay Bucs so-called “coverage” by the sports bloviators throughout the team’s history.
