Todd Bowles Expects Akiem Hicks And Josh Wells To Miss Packers Game

September 20th, 2022

Injured defensive tackle Akiem Hicks.

An early-week injury update from head coach Todd Bowles, and it’s not pretty.

Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network today, Bowels said he doesn’t expect starting defensive tackle Akiem Hicks and starter/backup left tackle Josh Wells to play Sunday against the Packers.

Hicks has a foot injury. Joe saw Hicks pull up lame late in the second quarter with what appeared to be a non-contact injury against the Saints on Sunday. Wells also left the game with a calf injury.

Bowles made it clear that the injuries are significant. “They’re probably going to be out the next week,” said Bowles, who typically never reveals any injury news unless he has to.

The Bucs’ first Week 3 injury report will be released Wednesday afternoon.

Joe’s not concerned about Hicks being out. Rakeem Nuñez-Roches is more than capable and he started most of the Super Bowl season in place of Vita Vea. As for Wells, Joe believes there’s a good chance longtime starter Donovan Smith will return Sunday and third-string Brandon Walton sure looked damn good in his NFL debut against New Orleans.

For those wondering, the subject of injured receivers came up and Bowles started talking about capable receivers on the Bucs practice squad. And he wasn’t referring to newcomer Cole Beasley, who is expected to be on the practice squad for at least a week.

  1. Locked In Says:

Hopefully I’m wrong, but I expect Hicks will be injury prone and probably miss more games than he plays in.

  2. Marques Says:

That’s an 8 week injury at best.

  3. #8 Says:

    Hicks injured? Color me shocked.

  4. BigPoppaBuc Says:

This was the worry with Hicks. Roach always holds his own, and hopefully the rookie is ready to make an impact. Packers are going to try and run on us bc we’ve put some bad film out there these past couple weeks. Knowing Bowles he’ll correct it.

  5. Don Eladio Says:

Chris Godwin not being so injury prone would kinda help. Great guy. But also a guy that you can’t count on to play a full season

  6. Leopold Stotch Says:

Just saw it was a torn plantar fascia. At least a month… So… Suh

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    A non-contact injury for Hicks…..great…..

Do believe D Smith will be back and probably Julio…..don’t know about Godwin…..

Activate Devin Thomkins….he catches most everything thrown at him.

We need to get our TEs in the game!!!

  8. Arn platz Says:

Suhre would be nice to have a Suhre handed veteran like Suh to fill on for Hichs. I am Suhre there’s a free agent defensive tackle that would fill in nicely, Suhrley there must be

  9. PaBucsFan Says:

I don’t understand why Otten is not targeted in the receiving game. Seems like he has good hands. Also, Thompkins would have been a much better option than Geiger. Darden is turning out to be a preseason and training camp star but when the action starts, he goes invisible. We have to have better options than him.

  10. Redeemer Says:

Plantar fasciitis is a bitch. Hicks will probably miss a month. I don’t think his absence hurts them so much in the run game, as it does their ability to push the pocket without blitzing. This is what you get, on both sides of the ball when you sign aging veterans.

  11. Regulator16 Says:

As expected. Everyone knew he was injury prone coming in. Jones and Hicks were high risk high reward options…and looks like they’re more risk than reward!

  12. Joseph C Simmons Says:

The thing is, during the Super Bowl season, Vita Vea made a HUGE difference in the playoffs.

This really sucks. But we knew the risks when we signed Hicks and Julio Jones. Old and injury-prone. At least with Julio we don’t need a lot of games; just fill in for the inevitable injuries Evans and Godwin always have. But Hicks was supposed to replace Suh and be a bedrock of the run defense/interior pass rush. Not having him means Vea is always double teamed and occasionally triple-teamed.

We really should consider calling Suh, unless this Logan Hall kid is showing out.

  13. Freeze Says:

The price for Suh just went up

  14. Defense Rules Says:

‘Joe’s not concerned about Hicks being out. Rakeem Nuñez-Roches is more than capable and he started most of the Super Bowl season in place of Vita Via’.

RNR is one of those guys who every team needs as a key rotational player but he’s not starter-quality. In his 8-year career, RNR has 1.5 sacks, 9 QB hits & 9 TFLs. Divide those numbers by 8 and they don’t scream ‘Pay me like a starter coach; I’m worth it’.

Our interior DLine is critical to our pass rush, and we all know that Vea can only give us 50-60% of the def snaps. Hicks’ injury history is well-documented, and that’s why some of us have been screaming for increased DLine DEPTH since the start of Training Camp. Instead we just keep adding one WR after another.

Logan Hall isn’t ready to man the interior yet. Go back & focus on him while he was in against the Saints. Had 29 def snaps … zero stats. No sacks, no QB hits, no TFLs, no tackles. The few plays I focused on him, the Saints’ OLine neutralized him quite easily. IF we’re truly all-in, then let’s go all-in for real. Re-sign Suh IF he’s maintained himself in game-ready condition.

  15. Goatfarmer Says:

Hicks has been a non factor even when in. Waste of money. Nacho looks very good, though. And Gholston is always rock steady. We need him to step up another notch.

  16. Alvafan Says:

PaBucsFan: You are dead right about Otten. Did you see that onsides kick replay Sunday? The Damn ball was spinning like a helicopter blade! When it hit his hands it stopped immediately! No bobble at all. Dude’s got special hands!

  17. Jerseybuc Says:

Nacho will be ok. The D will be ok long as we stay healthy on thst side. Hall will rotate. Need Julio to get his ass playing this week gage step up. May just maybe evans appeal will drag wide out need to show up though

  18. BucU Says:

Way to go Hicks. It was a gamble bringing u in here and it looks like the organization lost on this one.

  19. BucU Says:

I just read an article on Fansided and it said Evans could delay the suspension until the following week when we’re playing a out of conference game.
Less implications but that article was the only one to suggest the suspension could be delayed.

  20. PassingThru Says:

Hicks is a monster when healthy… but that was the risk in signing him. If he was younger and a low risk of injury, he wouldn’t have been affordable.

As I said prior to the signing, I didn’t expect Hicks to play every regular season game. My concern was whether he’d be healthy and healed by the playoffs.

  21. Alvafan Says:

I think it’s time all Bucs fans join the call for the man that can cement the center of our D-line for 2022……

    SUH!!!!

Please don’t tell me you’ve burn the bridge JL

  22. Tim Says:

They can roll with Nacho. Love that guy!

  23. Tim Says:

Also I totally agree about activating Thompkins, he’s earned a shot. See what he can do in live action.

  24. Alvafan Says:

He’s not Suh. But I love the energy he brings to the defense. The trouble is there’s no Nacho on the bench to bring in now. The rook isn’t ready for Primetime yet IMO

  25. Alvafan Says:

There’s something about Thompkins that they don’t trust for some reason. Unless they can’t get over themselves for drafting Darden. Speaking of him, the first punt he returned was pretty good. He stayed in bounds and picked up some extra yards. Let’s hope that a trend

  26. George Says:

    Suh should be signed.

  27. NCBucfan Says:

    Don Eladio,

How is Godwin injury prone? He got injured on the freak play against the stupid Saints. Before that, I don’t recall him missing much if any time.

  28. Joseph C Simmons Says:

“I just read an article on Fansided…”

    *****

    Just stop right there.

  29. Adrnagy Says:

Never liked hicks signing. 100% suh.

  30. SB~LV Says:

    Lisfranc

  31. adam from ny Says:

big bodied hick with plantar could be a real problem to get over…

this will be an issue all season long even if he returns soon

  32. Miller5252 Says:

Let’s hope Beasley is worth his contract. Why we got rid of Johnson and kept Darden makes no sense. And now when we need a receiver we had to get Beasley. Should have kept Johnson over scooter too. Dumb move letting him go Bucs

  33. adam from ny Says:

    spotted:

big suh has been spotted on dale mabry jogging thru the aisles of publix…

    when an employee said:

    “whatcha doing big guy?”

he said: “staying ready”…… with a smile and an eye winky

  34. NCBucfan Says:

But but but Darden actually had a return of like 10 yards, lol! Yeah, the TJ drop was very puzzling.

  35. Buc king Says:

    Suhhhhhh

  36. Buc king Says:

Or kick tires on gmc..David still loves him

  37. Redeemer Says:

All you Suh nuts need to get a clue. Go look at his PFF numbers last year. Yes he played a lot, but the production wasn’t there.

  38. Bob in valrico Says:

SUh only missed 2games in 12 years. A little too much ado about his 15 solo tackles. The overlooked parts of his game were 6 sacks ,a fumble recovery,13 QB hits,7TFL, 6 hurries, 7 QB knockdowns and 19 pressures.

  39. T REX Says:

    best roster my behind

  40. Crickett Baker Says:

Someone should get down and dirty and ask Bowles why Suh is not on the team. Maybe it would put a rest to these annoying requests and comments.

  41. Mike Johnson Says:

Suh time. Make it happen Licht.

  42. Dre Says:

    Who is Vita “Via”?….C’mon man….
