Knowing Jameis Winston Means Little To Bucs

September 15th, 2022

Bucs know him. So what?

It doesn’t matter.

That’s what head coach Todd Bowles said about the Bucs facing a very familiar face Sunday in New Orleans to face.

That Slimy Saints face belongs to America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. Joe knows Jameis’ Bucs history. which ended after he became one of only nine quarterbacks in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards in a season — and the Bucs had a chance to land the greatest quarterback.

So for one season, Bowles and his defense battled Jameis each and every practice. Few defensive coaches know Jameis as well as Bowles, but it doesn’t matter, Bowles said yesterday, and there’s no advantage.

“Not really,” Bowles said. “We play against ex-teammates all the time, so it’s just understanding the scheme and trying to execute.”

Joe spoke with Jamel Dean yesterday. The Bucs starting corner was a rookie in Jameis’ last year in Tampa Bay. Dean said Bowles is right. It’s not so much knowing Jameis, it’s making sure the Bucs defense executes what it has mapped out.

“It don’t matter,” Dean said of knowing Jameis. “It’s about sticking to what the gameplan is and focus on what we have to attack.”

Last week the slimy Saints looked awful in a win over the Dixie Chicks. Atlanta is straight-up trash this year. One Joe actually predicted the Dixie Chicks would finish 1-16.

Here is something to think about: The past four years, the slimy Saints have started each season 1-1. If that pattern holds, Sunday will be a fun day.

Winston has moved on and he is improving from his Bucs days, the Bucs do have a history of drafting QBs that win Superbowls for other teams; Doug Williams, Steve Young, and Trent Dilfer.

  2. Drebucsfan Says:

For me, this is a must win game! I believe the Bucs know that more than anyone…with green bay not looking all that either i feel we have a god chance of starting the season 3-1 if not 4-0, something special is brewing with this defense. And boy oh boy keep feeding fournette until the offense is back healthy. This will be one exciting season.

  3. BlindManSee Says:

When ever I see him all I can think of is that eating “W” speech he did. What a clown.

I’m kind of worried about this game…we can’t afford to take Jameis and this Saints team likely based on how hard they play against us…The fact that they played the Falcons tight means very little…Week 1 was nothing but a glorified preseason game…

Its funny how this fanbase views Jameis versus the way the Saints fanbase views him…Between Sean Payton and Drew Brees, Jameis actually got coached over there; the “QB guru” here in Tampa delegated alot of his coaching duties and elected to spend alot of time on the golf cart when Jameis was here…Once Brady walks we’re back to square 1 at the QB position…Hopefully Trask is ready because if not the Saints could easily become the team to beat in this division…

Bruce Arians had Winston for one year. Stop trying to blame him for not developing Jameis. All you have to do is watch the game tape to see how he sucked with the Bucs. He had 5 years and he didn’t progress. And I don’t think anyone is taking the game lightly. They know the results of the last 3 years.

  7. Buc4evr Says:

Tayson hill and trick plays. The Bucs better be ready.

  8. BucsfanFred Says:

Given the depleted state of our WR room and OL we really need to pound the rock Sunday. Use the TEs a little more too.

  9. A Bucs Fan Says:

We will definitely see more from the TE group this week. I’m thinking Cade Otton might have a big game. Also, Sneak needs to be active to back up Lenny.

I like the upside of Rachaad but against the Boys he was tentative at the line and although he’s big has not shown he knows how to use his strength or leverages to his advantage.

  10. Alanbucsfan Says:

Lenny better watch out for his knees.

I wish it was 1pm on Sunday already

  12. PSL Bob Says:

Familiarity with Jameis is less important than our familiarity with the Saints. We know what Kamara can do and the tricks they run with Taysom Hill. But at least we won’t have to worry about Sean Payton throwing in new offensive kinks this year. Just be prepared for what we know they like to do and have a good defensive effort. I’m more concerned about what our banged up offense will do against their defense than I am about what Jameis will do to us.

What a joke! Nice revisionist history you got going on there. The Buccaneers did everything they possibly could to help improve Jay-Miss in both personnel and coaching. They even brought in 80 year old Tom Moore to help him. The organization even had him use virtual reality to help him improve his on-field vision.

You have no idea how Arians coached Jay-Miss. The entire organization was built around helping him become a better QB between personnel and coaching. That entire staff put in work and effort to help him but the bottom line is that he was basically the same guy five years later from when he was drafted. The book on him never changed but let me guess, he needed one more year right?

  14. gotbbucs Says:

Jameis was an albatross on this team. No matter how much help they gave him, he pissed it down the entire organizations leg with poor decisions on and off the field. I gave him the benefit of the doubt all the way up to his taxi cab heavy petting incident. At that point I was done.

Winston to Brady is proof that no matter how good the rest of the roster is, the quarterback position trumps all. A true franchise QB elevates the play of everyone around him and draws great players from across the NFL to play with him and for him.

  15. gotbbucs Says:

Jameis will always give the defense opportunities, it’s just a fact of life. You just have to play within the scheme and accept the gifts as they come. Some weeks he’s more giving than others.

  16. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

It is really odd to me that Jameis insists on highlighting one of his most embarrassing moments as a Buccaneer.

The eating W’s moment… you could literally see that he lost his entire team at that moment. They looked embarrassed. They went out and lost 31-3.

Yet he keeps flashing it. Uh ok Jameis.

  17. Infomeplease Says:

I’m wondering if the Saints will have an answer to the kind of defense the Bucs displayed Sunday night. The Cowboys surely didn’t! I suspect a similar game plan, on both sides of the ball, again!! LFG!!!

  18. Greg Says:

    Well said D-Rome.

  19. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

    Ditto, Greg.

D-Rome, you were ALL OVER THAT.
    Well said.

  20. BucsNoles Says:

    This week:
Its time to see what R White/K Vaughn can do (Lenny needs to rest that hammy)
Ko Keif as a FB in goal would be fun to see as well

  21. Cobraboy Says:

@D-Rome: maybe “anonymous” was asleep during the “Wea[pons for Winston” years.

The Bucs jumped through their a$$#oles to accommodate Winston, and all they got out of it was some regurgitated eaten W’s and a drunken crotch grab…

I, for one, after wanting Winston to succeed as a Buc for YEARS am overjoyed he’s in the rear-view mirror.

And I wish him well except when playing the Bucs. Then I want him dismembered.

To casuals: sure, we’re butthurt over Godwin letting knee-capped by the Saints. But Saint fans are butthurt over the Bucs knee-capping their beloved ATM.

  22. Doc's Take Says:

Did the Buc’s loose the game when Jameis, was hurt.

  23. Alvafan Says:

    D-Rome says

The Buccaneers did everything they possibly could to help improve Jay-Miss in both personnel and coaching.

To bad they didn’t give him an eye test

  24. Tye Says:

The Saints played pitiful against the Falcons… The Falcons playing ‘not to lose’ is WHy the Falcons lost… The Saints would not have won that game against most other teams!
Saints looked weak compared to past years…

  25. Mark A Swygert Says:

The Saints were looking ahead to their next opponent. That’s why they struggled for a while last week. The Falcons helped them out with their usual 4th quarter collapse. Make no mistake the Saints level of play rises whenever they play the Bucs. For some reason they seem to hate us the most. Probably because they feel disrespected by our fanbase.

  26. WillieG Says:

It’s about sticking to the game plan AND remembering that Winston gets excited early and overthrows receivers.

  27. alton d green Says:

OK here is this weeks lesson on common sense for Todd. First I hope he remembers not doubling the fastest person on the planet, (the Cheetah), until he had 200 yards in the 1st qtr. OR not doubling Kupp in the championship game. Here it is Todd now pay attention; When they put Tayson Hill in the game, it’s probably a run. One way or the other he will be involved. #2; double Michael Thomas. PLEEEEEEEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
