It’s A One-Game Suspension For Mike Evans

September 19th, 2022

“I’ll miss you, TB.”

[UPDATE: 1:04 p.m.] The bad news was delivered this afternoon. Mike Evans is suspended for Sunday’s game against the Packers for his after-the-whistle cheap shot on mouthy Marshon Lattimore yesterday.

It’s no surprise. Joe wrote about it as soon as the game ended.

It seemed the fight that ensued after the Evans hit sparked the Bucs. So Joe will take it with a smile.

Hopefully, Julio Jones gets healthy in a hurry.

[UPDATE: 1:04 p.m.] Per Jeremy Fowler of BSPN, Mike Evans is expected to appeal this decision.

    APPEAL THAT CRAP!!!!

Lattimore should have been flagged for taunting and the refs blew it!

  2. NCBucfan Says:

What a pile of bullsh$$!! Yet no suspensions for the stupid refs!

  3. tampabuscsbro Says:

So Lattimore gets off scott free for starting an Altercation?

  4. ViSyl Says:

I ll say it first. We can beat the Packers without him. Said that, it was totally worth it.

  5. BuxfaninTX Says:

    It was worth it

  6. DungyDance Says:

When do we get word about Lenny’s hammy issue? TB may not have a lot of weapons at his disposal.

  7. pewter941 Says:

How many games did Latimore get?

  8. WalkdaPlank Says:

Well deserved and worth it. That absolute leveling of Lattimore sparked a Bucs comeback and a Jameis collapse that won them the game.

Lattimore should have been suspended as well though. Taunting the Bucs sideline and instigating with Evans and then Brady as they walked past him paying him no mind until he started jawing off.

He messed with the goat and got the Evans.

  9. Hodad Says:

Refs should be suspended for losing control of the game, and their bad no calls which lead to the rucus. With Evans out maybe it should be Thompkins time, instead of Miller time? Darden now in his second year what’s his excuse for not catching a pass yet? If those two can’t get it done, maybe it’s time to give someone else a shot. We need more than blocking from our TE’s also. Maybe suit up Rudolf, and see if he can produce for the TE room.

  10. #8 Says:

Bears had a TD stolen–GB ain’t that good.
Cannot wait for Bucs D to crush db12.
    Suh.

  11. Bucsministerfuller Says:

Joe i am just putting this out there but we should be encouraging all the fans who attend this Sunday’s game to wear their #13 Jerseys to show support for Mike.

  12. chris l Says:

is he allowed to practice with the team this week or can he not come back to the facility until day after packers game?

  13. Bobby M. Says:

Team is already thin at the position and he gets himself suspended….that’s dumb on Evans. If Brady doesn’t have the chess pieces needed to constantly exploit mismatches, 19-20 pts a game is going to be the norm and that won’t cut it vs upper tier teams.

  14. Kentucky Buc Says:

The NFL is full is sh!t. The Skanks have 2 players that should be in jail right now. Aaron Donald is bashing guys with a helmet. Keep it up NFL until u become the NBA and your viewership goes in the toilet. They know damm good and well what the Skanks are all about. Enough already.

  15. Tbbucsjoe83 Says:

NFL can be so inconsistent at times….. Aaron Donald beats other player with helmets….crickets…. Mike Evans shoves a player to the ground and gets ejected and suspended… what a joke!!

  16. Hodad Says:

#8, forget Suh. We need to give whatever cap space we have left to lure Gronk back. Our TE’s have done a decent job of blocking, but we need some receiving that group. They’ve been a non factor in the passing game. If that doesn’t change we’re in for some tough sledding.

  17. BucU Says:

It was absolutely worth Mike getting a game off.
It changed everything. Now it’s time to step up Gage, Scotty, Julio. Here’s how it works down here in Tampa boys…..Bury your dead. Clean your rifle, and march on to the next fight.

  18. Charles Izett Says:

Lattimore clearly threw a punch but that isn’t deemed a potential to harm another player? Should be one for one. I’d agree with that even though it means losing Evans for a game.

  19. AbucAway Says:

Do what needs to be done and face the consequences: both good and bad. That’s Life -101.

Mike’s actions were justified. No one will convince me otherwise.

  20. Joe Says:

is he allowed to practice with the team this week or can he not come back to the facility until day after packers game?

Pretty sure Evans is not allowed at the facility until after the Packers game, unless he appeals.

  21. stpetebucfan Says:

Here is how the Buc’s should respond. They have incredible video resources with in house producers able to put together “cut outs” for the coaches and players.

Someone should simply go back the past five years and look at EVERY play that Lattimore covered a Buc. There will be so much clutching and grabbing..CHEATING..that it would be readily apparent.

Show everyone of them and note how few actually get called! That mugging of Scottie was a pathetic no call.

There was no hand fighting…Scottie is not ME13 and doesn’t really have the size to compete with Lattimore with hand fighting and physicality…but he clearly has the speed to blow Lattimore’s doors off if he isn’t being held.

Don’t know if that play was PI but it was certainly defensive holding at a minimum. I went to the ‘googles” to confirm.

“The 5-yard contact rule in the NFL allows defensive backs to make contact with wide receivers at or less than 5 yards. Anything over 5 yards will result in an illegal contact penalty. The college game is more neutral and allows defensive backs to be more physical with wide and slot receivers.”

  22. Letsbucinggo Says:

Lets hope Godwin and Jones are ready.

  23. SufferingSince76 Says:

    NFL – National Fraud League.

  24. Bucs since 76 Says:

Evans should appeal so he can play against the Packers. If the suspension is upheld let it be against the Chiefs a non conference game

  25. Hodad Says:

He should’ve hit him with his helmet like Donald. Apparently that doesn’t get you suspended.

  26. Goatfarmer Says:

    Lattimore is a biotch.

  27. NCBucfan Says:

    Bucs since76,

Good point! And Godwin will most likely be back by the Chiefs game as well, this week will be tight on whether or not he makes it back.

  28. Alvafan Says:

The NFL is robbing me. I paid good money for 5 tickets to this game and I can’t even see ME13 play! Lattimore started that dust up. It wasn’t even a dirty hit. Straight on in your face football.

  29. brooks Says:

    Got to keep your cool

  30. DBS Says:

Agree 100% on Tompkins time. Enough of Darden. Let’s see what Tompkins can do next week . If they really trusted Darden they would target him more. Especially in a game like yesterday when Evans went out.

  31. Enough Said Says:

How convenient, Jon Runyan only suspends Evans for this incident. Guess who his son plays for? You guessed it, Jon Runyan Jr.(#76), plays Guard for the Green Bay Packers. This should be immediately overturned by the NFL due to conflict of interest. If the NFL doesn’t overturn this, Derrick Brooks should overturn it during the appeal process. I bet if we looked hard enough, we can find old film of Runyan doing the same thing as Evans in the heat of the game and probably find out he was only fined or ejected. This is B.S.!!

  32. Timbucs2 Says:

Pretty sure that Lattimore hitting Lenny’s helmet back like that could have caused a neck injury… where’s the suspension for him? I feel like the refs should have been censured publicly too, for missing the egregious PI on that play and not hitting Lattimore for unsportsmanlike conduct, going over and chirping at the Bucs bench.

But man, I keep watching Evans level Lattimore on repeat and laughing, and I can’t be sorry about it.

  33. Timbucs2 Says:

Also funny that Derrick Brooks is the guy who will hear the appeal, ha. I know he won’t be biased, but still funny.

  34. DBS Says:

Where are all the unsportsmanlike conduct rules for Lattimore? How many does he get to violate???

  35. Defense Rules Says:

    #8 … ‘Bears had a TD stolen–GB ain’t that good’.

Don’t know anything about the Bears having a TD stolen, but I think the Packers’ offense looks to be pretty danged good. And especially their run game. In their 2 games they’ve gotten 314 rushing yards in 56 carries … for a 5.6 yds/rush average. I’ll take that all day long.

Their passing game looks to be fairly ‘efficient’ but Rodgers hasn’t been going deep very much (Rodgers was only 1-for-4 deep against the Vikings, then 1-for-2 deep against the Bears). Primarily have stuck with running the ball & throwing short passes (Rodgers was sacked 4 times by the Vikes & 3 times by the Bears).

Got a feeling they’ll try to duplicate the Bears game against us (38 rushes vs 28 passing attempts … 60% run-pass ratio … with mostly short passes. We’ll have our hands full trying to stop AJ Dillon (I’d REALLY wanted us to draft him; reminds me of Mike Alstott).

  36. Izod Says:

I’m just gonna say it for anyone who doesn’t know already: Lattimore is a POS.

He gets away with a lot more than aggressive hand checking. He is punching, pulling, grabbing the receiver all the way down the field. been doing this crap his entire career.

You can’t pull the receiver’s hands and arms. Period. There should be a specific NFL rule called the Lattimore Rule that prohibits some of the stuff he gets away with.

  37. SlyPirate Says:

    THEY GOT IT RIGHT

Google in-game fight penalties. It’s always a one game suspension. Julio will be back. Godwin may be too. Mike will get a break and come back on fire.

  38. BigMacAttack Says:

What Mike Evans did is true leadership. He’s the one who runs in the burning building to rescue the baby, runs into gunfire to save his buddy. That character is written all over his face. He is pure class and if you try hurt those he cares for, he will straight up Jack you up! Lattimore is lucky it wasn’t just he and Mike alone because Mike would have beat the bad boy right outta that little punk. ME13 would have been an awesome hockey player. Fearless, Ferocious, Super Talented and Tough ss Nails. ME13 showed yesterday who is the King of the Bucs! It’s him and I love it.

  39. SPARKY Says:

What Lenny and Mike did was worth it. It told the other 31 teams that you don’t mess with our QB, and it told the ugly saints we’re not putting up with your sh!t. I only wish big Red Jensen would of been there. Bodies would still be flying around.

  40. Ron Potter Says:

This suspension is handed down by NFL VP Runyan, whose son Jon Runyan plays for the Green Bay Packers. This suspension does not adhere to the “high standards” of Roger Goodell and the NFL buffoons who run it. I expect a successful appeal, not just on the basis that Lattimore started all of this, but on the basis that the NFL is clearly in a conflict of interest here. This VP needs to be suspended for lacking professional foresight while pounding his chest about high standards.

  41. Ron Potter Says:

…forgot to mention but I assumed everyone knew what I meant as we play the Packers next week and this Packer Dad just suspended our star WR for next week’s game against them.

  42. IDROOLPEWTER&RED Says:

Like you said, Joes, if the reps had done their job and called a penalty against Lattimore, the fight wouldn’t have happened. You’d think the league would at least give the ref crew a good tongue lashing, but that would be a first.

  43. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This is not good news…..I wonder if he can appeal and postpone it.

  44. #8 Says:

Defense–I agree. GB will try to run on us–Jones is legit.
db12 has had a tendency to get into some trouble this year though–more than others seems to me. My hope is we matchup well against them and make for a bad day for db12.

Fields scored on a 4-1 rush that would’ve made it 17-24 with 8 minutes left. Instead it was a downs and 10-24. Bears were surging.

  45. '79 Defense Says:

For those saying it was “totally worth it,” it may not be if we lose a close one next week without Evans.

  46. Cobraboy Says:

    Paying the Piper.

But the actions that earned the suspension helped the Bucs win the game.

    Worth it.

  47. Capt.Tim Says:

Lattimoron punched Lenny- prior to Evans knocking him on his ass.
Guess the punch, or taunting Brady doesnt count.

NFL is following Disneys lead. High prices, bad service. And more interested in politics than their customers.
Both will end up paying for it.

  48. Ed Says:

Amazing that anyone can think that wasn’t PI or defensive holding.

The NFL refs need to explain how a WR can be held and pushed 35 yards downfield on a catchable ball and not draw a penalty.

Lattimore bodied Miller out of bounds after he wrapped up his arms.

I just don’t get how a DB can do that much holding on a smaller WR and not be penalized. When Davis bumped Olave on the long Winston pass he got called for the bump being PI yet Lattimore holds all the time and gets away with it.

  49. Buczilla Says:

Horrible, inconsistent officiating caused that brawl. Mike was wrong, but you need to remedy the source of the issue in order to fix this nonesense. The saints have been getting away with bs at home for years. Hiring the refs full time and letting them, eat, sleep, and breathe the rulebook would probably work under normal cicumstances. Personally, I think that there is a tad bit of “funny business” behind the scenes and the league doesn’t want the issue fixed. Idiots are not making the rules for the league and yet the rulings on catches are still subjective as hell. Bunch of crooked bastards is what they are. 😜

  50. TheScourge Says:

My god, am I the only one that finds it comical JON RUNYUN is in charge of punishment for misconduct in the NFL? The NFL is so tone deaf when it comes to things like this… and bad refs…

  51. D-Rome Says:

A JBF commenter in another post said that he read Mike Evans’ lips and he said something to the effect of “That’s Tom Brady, what am I supposed to do.” I mean, even if he didn’t say that exactly (or anything) the sentiment is spot on. Evans is a leader on that team and he won’t stand for anyone getting in the face of his QB, especially Tom Brady. Staying on the sidelines was not an option.

  52. Marine Buc Says:

No big deal. Give Evans a rest – he was on the injury list already anyways. I still think it was worth it. Football is a chess match and we took out their Queen and only gave up a bishop… I will take that exchange every match.

I’m proud of my Bucs. That was a total grudge match on the road and we won.

  53. David Says:

I expect him to miss a game.

I am just wondering if he can appeal and if that appeal will delay it long enough where he can play this weekend. That would be ideal since Godwin is out and Julio is hobbling.

  54. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Mike Evans was a German Shephard, in a past life.
He has that inherent protective instinct. If you mess with someone he likes or loves, watch out!
Plus, for such a big lanky guy, he is incredibly strong.
I remember him literally pancaking a defensive back he was blocking once.
Latimore is lucky this is the first time Mike has went off on him.
I am glad in a way this fight happened, because it forever shed the way the Saints USED to intimidate us.

  55. Beeej Says:

If Evans appeals so he can play against the Packers and loses, does that mean he might have to skip the Chiefs instead?

  56. CJ Says:

Mike Evans is a punk, second time he takes a cheap shot at Lattimore. He should be suspended for the year. As Ingram said, Evans is not respected around the league. He gets shut out, and immediately starts fighting and taking cheap shots.

  57. Jmarkbuc Says:

Poor CJ…delusional and about to be mercilessly dragged.

  58. Browsing from DC Says:

I’m sure ME knows he’ll lose the appeal (which sucks but is typical). The team should help him decide whether to appeal and play the Packers or skip the appeal, miss the Packers game, but be fresh for K.C. the following week.

A lot will depend on the health of other receivers I would think.

Hey, it was still sweet seeing that douche Lattimore go flying! I was kinda hoping Lenny Tyson might make an appearance after that face push. But definitely don’t want to lose him for a game too.

  59. Turk182 Says:

A formed Buc or a former Eagle to hear the appeal. Who’s your favorite player? Let’s go with 55! That is funny and would drive Saints nation nuts. More the reason to do it.

  60. Buc king Says:

I would appeal or take it the suspension the week before the bye week to get really rested.

  61. Listnfrmafar Says:

GB may not be that good but I find it hard to believe Bucs can win if Gage is your #1 receiver and they are left with Miller, Perriman, Brate & Darden. Brady creates small miracles at times but that would be a WHOPPER!

  62. Statisticly Insignificant Reader Says:

Green Bay is a conference game but would hate to see Mike miss Kansas City.

  63. Francisco Guzman Says:

List defense has to carry them. This packers team is not the same team is not the same offensively as last year. These games count in terms of tiebreaker later on but this packers team is not the same as last year.

  64. Francisco Guzman Says:

It’s one game. Evans will be back for the KC game.

  65. Marine Buc Says:

    @ CJ

LOL…. I can’t blame you. I spent all morning on all the Saints websites trolling the sad frustrated Aints fans who were crying in their gumbo…

    That was fun!

    You had a bad day
    The camera don’t lie
You’re coming back down, and you really don’t mind
    You had a bad day

    You had a bad day!!!

  66. BucDaWorld Says:

They need to suspend the refs because if they were doing their jobs none of this would have escalated and now Mike has to be the bad guy. For all the people bellyaching about Mike needs to be smarter, sit your a$$ down somewhere. Sometimes a message needs to be sent that we wont tolerate B.S. Message sent!!
The Saints imploded, the refs started making the right calls, and we won the game. As far as I am concerned I will take that trade off. Mike was already hurt, a game off will do him some good. I believe we can beat the packers without Mike. Go Bucs!!!!

  67. Sumosam Says:

At least he isn’t out because of injury but I will say this. The Saints always find a way to hurt us either physically or mentally. This is turning into a big time rivalry game and their new coach is bad news and he likes his guys playing to hurt people.

    _________________________________________________________________

    I like this idea!!!!!

  69. Josh Says:

Why aren’t the refs being fined and suspended for their horrible decisions and lack of actually refereeing the game. If it wasn’t for the refs all of this would have been avoided. This crew does not need to be on the field with the bucs again this season. Horrible precedent set by the NFL to not admit what actually caused the melee.

  70. geno711 Says:

    @CJ Says:

Did you really suggest that Evans is not respected?

Evans has 6 TDs against the Saints since he came into the league and 76 TDs as a wide receiver in the NFL since he started. Those 76 TDs are more than any other receiver.

Maybe if the Saints respected Evans more, they could have beat the Bucs in the Playoffs two years ago and won the Super Bowl instead of the Bucs.

Evans did score on the Aints in that game. When it mattered, the Aints fell short.

  71. Listnfrmafar Says:

Francisco, you are correct GB is not the same team they are more focused on the run due to a green wr core. Bucs D weakness appears to be the run. All I’m saying is Roger’s ain’t no Winsten or Dak back up, you need a somewhat competent offense to beat them. Their D isn’t horrible.

  72. John Olmstead Says:

I’ll take the suspension. Some problems are ONLY solved with a punch to the mouth!

  73. Bucsfanman Says:

Lattimore needed to be dealt with, plain and simple. I don’t like the suspension because I think the refs blew two calls on that play; P.I. and Taunting. I’d argue that had a flag been thrown, he wouldn’t have been chirping down the sidelines.

Mike probably needs the rest anyway.

  74. Rod Munch Says:

Totally worth it to knock Lattimore’s teeth out. Plus Evans has, like always, a tweaked hammy, so not the worst thing in the world to give him a week off. However, ideally, they just appeal it and stall it until Godwin is back.

  75. D-Rok Says:

At first I was all like, “Dang, ME’s streak of 1K yards might be in jeopardy now.” Then I realized that with 17 games, he has an extra game, so by only potentially playing in 16 games…well, he’s got his 1K with only 16 games. A throw-away game, if you will.

Then, we get to thinking about needing him for the Packers game, and suddenly reality sets in. I hope we don’t lose to GB.

HOWEVER, there comes a time where it’s not only important to stick up for your team and your guys, sometimes, it’s critical.

If only Mike could’ve pulled up short a bit and just got in his face without throwing him down, maybe he wouldn’t have gotten suspended. Mike does deserve the suspension, but I do hope he wins the appeal.

Sometimes, hurting your team in the short-run is much better for the long-run, and I think that’s exactly what just happened. The rest of the league, and the Aints, gonna realize we aint such a finesse team anymore.

GO BUCS!!! Beat them Packers just FOR Mike Evans, please!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂

  76. Vance Says:

Glazer’s better call Brooks. Evans is a GB killer.

  77. KrippledKracka Says:

I love your enthusiasm StPetBuc. But I just don’t see in house staff being tasked performing such research and putting the tape together to prove the point. Though, I think most of is already know your point (and in my opinion is true), resources are better apt to being assigned to cutting tape on prepping for GB and KC. I can, however, see this take being full filed by our faithful fan base. I can’t wait to see what you come up with (hint hint) 😝

  78. KrippledKracka Says:

Note that GB ran against a porous Vikings DL and that ranked in bottom fourth last year and Da Bears (whom own fans and analysts state) got markedly worse this year. So GB’s run stats are going to look inflated. It’s all about the game within the game. I see our coaches coaching and holding our run defense accountable. We will have a dominant defensive performance against the backpackers.

  79. steele Says:

Convenient suspension from the league and its sponsors who want to see Aaron Rodgers win.

  80. Deano Says:

CJ needs to be bent over the table popped in the keister and sent home with I just f the neighbor’s cat look on his face

  81. orlbucfan Says:

Been a Bucs fan for over 40 years so this one-sided BS doesn’t surprise me. Bucs need to dedicate this next game to ME13 and the Mighty Defense needs to kick Rodgers all the way to the Dry Tortugas. Now, is that for real about Aaron Donald popping someone with a helmet??

  82. Eric b Says:

Thats complete bs alvin k beat a dude and stommped his head in but is not suspended?? And lattimore should be also this is crazy and absurd!! He got ejected and that should of been it Appeal it! And we got the win!! GO BUCS UNFINISHED BUISSNESS

  83. LongSeason Says:

Hope appeal of suspension means it will take effect against KC. That is not a division or even a conference game. That might allow Jones to get get back and the Cole we got in our stocking to get up to speed.
