Finding A Way To Gain A Yard

September 20th, 2022

Not used in short yardage.

If you can’t gain a yard, you may not have a good offense.

Sooner or later, the Bucs’ stout defense will stop bailing out the Bucs. Sooner or later, an offense led by the greatest named “Tom Brady” must put up more points than 20.

A couple of times on Sunday, including on the slimy Saints-8, the Bucs couldn’t gain one friggin’ yard for a first down.

What seemed odd was the Bucs, rather than use Brady, a guy who has one of the best resumes for gaining a yard on a sneak, instead used Playoff Lenny.

Todd Bowles wasn’t happy about this yesterday during his day-after presser and Bowles sounds as if that is a key goal to solve this week.

“We’ve got to find a way to get a yard,” Bowles said. “For whatever reason, it didn’t click. Whether they made a good play or we didn’t, we’ve got to find a way to get one yard every time if we want to go for it on fourth down.”

Well, normally Joe would suggest passing for a short yard if running the ball is that tough. But dang, what happened to Brady if he can no longer run up Robert Hainsey’s arse to gain one yard?

Find a way, Bucs. Find a way. That’s mandatory before this season is over. Probably more than a couple of times.

Not who your running but how

  3. JA Says:

    Ex nihilo nihil fit!

The manpower to bowl guys over does not exist with with this new OL. If you got nothing you get nothing. So, change it up.
An occasional play-action from the bunch formation should spread opposing defenses and give these neophytes a future chance to open a hole for a lousy yard.

  4. Bucschamp Says:

Time for Gage to step up and make some noise

  5. ModHairKen Says:

Too complicated a play, apparently, to expect Wirfs to pick up the man left by the pulling G on that 4th and 1. Wirfs did not have his best game. Offense at times was predictable. But so what? They won.

  6. Leighroy Says:

I would save my uses of the 45 year old GOAT sneaking for the games that matter most in the winter. Yes he’s been effective at it before, but the reward doesn’t align with the risk… yet.

For weeks 1-14, challenging the team to gain a yard is worth short term pain if they can figure it out eventually for long term gain.

  7. SufferingSince76 Says:

Everyone knows you’re coming up the gut. Is it such a crime to be imaginative or just different in those situations?

  8. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

No matter how good our dline is other teams have no problem picking 4th&1 up so maybe coaches should look at what other teams do against us just saying

  9. Bucfan Says:

When Brady is done, so are the Bucs. Even with the GOAT, the Bucs struggle with the play calling. Do the Bucs ever look at their own game tapes? They had success running on the right side against Dallas. Why do they insist on running it up the gut or on the left side? The Bucs will be painfull to watch when they only have an average QB at best.

  10. teacherman777 Says:

Brady has lost weight and muscle mass.

    He is pliable and wonderful.

But I don’t want him to sneak anymore.

  11. BucU Says:

That 4th down call was atrocious.
It took 20 min for the play to develop.
    That can’t happen anymore.

  12. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

No matter how good our dline is other teams have no problem picking this up on 4th down. Maybe they should look at what they do to us and try that out I’m just saying. Brady doesn’t look too healthy right about now so against the Taints I wouldn’t have tried that with them, they were mauling or oline in the run game

  13. Bob in valrico Says:

We need to get the yard, but a little deception can’t hurt. When we show the run with our personnel groupings defenses will stack the box. The defense will probably key on Fornette in this situation. We need to take advantage of that with a different play call. The little dumpoff to Hump on the left
side was a play that got many a first down. Still hoping to see Kief get some touches in a fullback or H back. Little nostalgia, but thinking of some plays Gruden used for Alstott when he made him a fullback just be of use.

  14. Alvafan Says:

Correction: your first sentence is the understatement of the year!

  15. Alvafan Says:

Call Gruden. Ask him about “Wide Miami”. It’s better to build bridges than burn them.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We could do the 1 yard pass….but usually when we need 1….we throw it 20 yards downfield.

  17. Hodad Says:

Some short yardage situations why not bring in Gabbert? Sort of like what the Saints do with Hill. Blaine is a better passer, but a danm good enough runner to get a yard. Lefty needs to get creative. The Bucs offense looks old, and stale compared to what some teams are running. Lefty wants to become a H.C. he needs to out scheme some of these young OC’s like the guy in Philly. Teams will be looking for the next mad scientist like McDanails in Miami, not the black version of Arain’s old school offense.

  18. Defense Rules Says:

Gaining a full yard when your opponent with a top defense stacks the box because they KNOW what’s coming isn’t all that easy. So like JA says … ‘change it up’.

I wouldn’t recommend running QB sneaks with Tom Brady against teams like New Orleans. Lots of ‘stuff’ could happen to TB12 in the resultant pile-up, and none of it’s good. And I wouldn’t put anything past the Saints to at least try taking advantage.

Again like JA says, an ‘occasional play action’ could work wonders. If nothing else, it’d give them something to think about & make us at least somewhat less predictable.

  19. Eckwood Says:

Stfu …….Bowles ….this is Staff not knowing their personnel………. Alstott was a freight train when moving but wasnt a good short yardage runner …….Lenny is not a good short yardage runner and then on top of it you have all these moving parts plays your running ……… So right there the Staff has put the team behind in conversion / success percentage ,,,,, again , sometimes these coaches just aren’t that smart beyond their ,if we block this right it should work bull headed ness ………. Short yardage conversion is almost like a part of ( kinda a specialty all of its own) special teams , you have to have the right outlook ( failed) the right players on the field( failed) , the right normally quick hitting play ( failed) , the right gaps ( ?) you must also throw in the old boring hard count down to one second and a time out to help keep that d line off guard a lil………… Vaughn is Def the best short yardage , up to speed at the line of scrimmage, fall forward lower center of gravity guy but he even needs to coached up exclusively for third and short……….. Zeke in Dallas is a good short yardage guy, Pollard is not,,,,,,, Dillion next week is a pretty good short yardage ( Green Bay didn’t use him properly for 1.5 years) guy but the plays must fit and you have to give your line a lil edge , especially in Tampa with a younger smaller line ………….. Very Very Clear this Staff doesn’t respect nor accurately understand their short yardage team / game and probably are not willing to make Brady a part of that until much later in the year . …….Short Yardage is Mega Important and its own Specialty but lots of Staffs aren’t good at it !!! Sure wish Vaughn had better hands or at least trusted hands .

  20. PSL Bob Says:

How about not running the same play on short-yardage downs! Twice we ran into the heart of the Saints defense on 4th and 1 and both times got stuffed. How about a little play action or Brady rolling out and then passing to a TE or RB who comes off his block? C’mon Man! I know Leftwich is calling the offense, but I have a feeling that last year this is when Arians would have stepped in and pressed BL to be a bit more aggressive. But, this year Bowles is hands off the offense so BL’s conservatism is unchecked.

  21. Bucanero Says:

Couple blunders but they’ll get it done next time. Chill!

  22. Browsing from DC Says:

And right on cue, here comes Cole Beasley. Closest thing to Edelman that Brady can get. That should help in those “move the sticks” scenarios

  23. Listnfrmafar Says:

Brady makes the QB sneak call. Obviously he felt Hainsley could pull it off , the communication between center and QB has to be perfect, any miscommunication results in a sack. Pulling linemen on 4th & 1 opens up gaps. Poor play calling and Brady knew it. Take the points, the Bucs struggle against the Saints D, Bucs D was holding their own and the pressure goes back on Aimless Winsten. Bad call, same as NO TO on 4th down with 50 seconds left in the half. The pass rush wasn’t getting to Brady and 50 seconds and two TO’s is a life time for TB12.

  24. Listnfrmafar Says:

    couldn’t pull it off.

  25. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

Lefty did it again. Need a real OC not a BA OC. Hope he lands a HC job somewhere (NOT TAMPA)

  26. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

Oh I forgot to mention, Gage can’t catch balls that are not thrown to him. Come on TB, Gage is a hell of a receiver.

  27. Listnfrmafar Says:

Thomas, TB12 will send you a formal apology for not hitting Gage wide open underneath and throwing the perfect spiral to Perriman for the TD. Gage has issues getting separation and has done nothing after the catch. I believe he still has a lingering injury.

  28. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Hand it to the fullback!! We have a bruiser type fullback that has decent hands and has handled the ball plenty of times in college … Give it to him and see if he can be the next Alsttot?

Are you talking about the freaking TE, Ko Koft? He almost never handled the ball in college.

  30. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Eckwood was right-it is personnel problem-Lenny not a guy that can get airborne and go over the top-but Vaughn and Bernard can.

  31. LakelandSteve Says:

Where is the imagination from one Buc. If something isn’t working try something else. Why wouldn’t we get out of that jumbo package and spread them out. You have the GOAT as the QB. He could still hand it off if the defense is spread out or maybe have room to sneak the ball, or a quick pass if he has a favorable matchup.

  32. C-Rock Says:

Give Vita Vea the ball if we need a 1 yard 1st down.

  33. matthew veal Says:

Best comment of the year from eckwood imo.

    Great back too

  34. Anon Says:

The Saints have an elite run defense that’s why it didn’t work.

  35. Pirate Poe Says:

I agree vita vea is like the fridge back on the bears he definitely needs to be a short yardage man
