Carlton Davis Suggests Todd Bowles Is A Football Illusionist

September 14th, 2022

Tweaking the defense.

You may think you know, but you don’t.

Yeah, Jim Mora once said that to a gaggle of reporters after a slimy Saints game. But that quote could be ro4 quarterbacks facing a Todd Bowles defense.

Bucs cornerback Carlton Davis explained today that Bowles is a magician, partially so quarterbacks cannot tell what’s coming, partially so teams can’t get a read on the Bucs’ defense or copy it.

It’s hard to tell what defense the Bucs are in just buy looking at a formation.

“He does a lot of good things well and his disguises are crazy – you never know when the blitz is coming or where they’re coming from,” Davis said today about why the Bucs’ defense was able to shut down the Cowboys.

“He’s really versatile in how he likes to bring pressure and how he stops the run first. I think that’s one of the biggest things in this league is to make teams one-dimensional.”

Davis noted that the Bucs changed up their defense somewhat this offseason for a variety of reasons. One is new personnel; another is Bowles doesn’t want teams figuring him out.

And a third reason for adjusting the defense, even a little, is the league eventually catches up with a team that doesn’t try to adjust or adapt.

If Bowles is an illusionist maybe he can make Jenna Laine disappear during interviews.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

And, it helps that our defense has depth and is 100% healthy……not a nick….

Add out new punter to the mix and we can shut the Saints down.

I agree with Devin. Every year the Bucs defense plays a little bit differently. He also does some things in the beginning of the year that are different than the end of the year.

I am not calling him elite, but he certainly is a good defensive coordinator.

In 2019, the 1st year the Bucs were here you could see the defensive line starting to win the line of scrimmage from about game 9. That had never happened in the previous 7 or more years.

    It’s fantastic.
Remember back in the day, the Buccaneers hung onto the Tampa 2 for way too long. And of course there was Smiths defense 🤮
Got to adjust, show different looks, mix it up, go from zone to man etc. especially in today’s world where offenses dominate

    Kentucky – LOL!

Yeah maybe Jenna could meet up with Geezie at the stable for a bucket of oats and a tub of wine.

    LOL Kentucky.

This makes me happy. How many coaches have we had (and plenty of other teams) that didn’t coach to personnel or shipped off good players to bring in slobs because they need to ‘run their system’.

That to me was always the telltale sign of a crap coach.

I agree. Bowles has always tried to fit a player to his best position and it has been working. As for Jabbering Jenna, if she would just ask a question without the continual statements beforehand, I would be much happier with her professionalism. Someone once said she just likes to hear the sound of her voice.

I’d love to see Jaboo dork around like a bow-legged chicken and tossing pick sixes to our guys.

Great game Sunday night. I wonder though if CD answered the “why “ on all those blown coverages last year. Bowles is so confusing to opposing offenses but maybe it’s confusing some of his defensive guys too. I bet it’s hard to pickup those complex coverages and blitzes when your team is racked by injuries and new guys are playing and switching positions like we saw last year. When everyone is primed and on the same page Bowles defenses are fun to watch.

    LOL Kentucky.

  12. G.Marosi Says:

Buc’s defense looks good just need the offense to get going. 19pts won’t win many games when we averaged 30 points last year.

I’ll claim that, although I am probably not the only one.
