About That Delay Of Game Call

September 25th, 2022

“What happened, Tom?”

What the Josh Freeman was that?

Joe still can’t believe the Bucs were flagged for delay of game after their very late touchdown cut the Packers’ lead to two points.

Even after a slight delay for replay review to confirm the touchdown, Tom Brady and the offense couldn’t get the snap off and the penalty pushed their 2-point conversion back to the 7 yard line — on a day when seven yards felt like 20.

How does that happen? Brady is the ultimate veteran. Byron Leftwich is an experienced guy on the headset. The brainfart rivals Brady thinking it was third down on fourth down to end a loss to the Bears during the 2020 season.

Perhaps Brady thought the playcall would have failed and thought it was better to take the penalty? That’s Joe really stretching reality.

Maybe this fail is remotely excusable on the road, but certainly not at home.

And no, Joe doesn’t blame Brady missing several training camp practices.

The whole exchange reminded Joe of when Josh Freeman was called for back-to-back delay of game penalties during the Greg Schiano years of The Lost Decade.

To me it looked like perriman was on the wrong side, which delayed everything.

  2. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Bad Offensive play calling Joe

That’s all there is to this horrific day for the Offense.

I’ve been saying this for years about the OC…..if it wasn’t for Bruce Arians…..the OC wouldn’t even be a OC…. he’s always been awful and now we’ve seen it in full display for 3 games without Arians as his safety net.

  3. ElioT Says:

Byron is bum. Dude is awful.

  4. Zzbuc Says:

At first I thought it was in Hainsey, but in the rep, when you read TB12 lips, looks that is in him

Really hard to watch, but to be honest, a month ago , I would have signed being 2/1 on the fists 3 games.

  5. TheBucsAnthem Says:

And why would you even line up what looked like a WR trips right variant of a play on a two point conversation????? That is BS!!!!!

  6. Bucs Fan Since ‘76 Says:

Looked like Brady changed the play and ran out of time.

  7. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

Technically the penalty is on Brady…. Technically. But really the award for our all woes goes to Byron Leftwich, who cannot figure out how to call a game without elite targets winning matchups. No concept of scheming guys open, creativity, or unpredictability. It’s predictable garbage and it has been since he has been play caller. Unless we have 3 elite targets for Brady out there, we will be lucky to crack 20.

  8. August 1976 Buc Says:

Brady thought it was 5th down

  9. JA Says:

    Tough day.
O-line a shadow of its former self.
Zero starting wide receivers, invisible tight ends and no Gronk.
Throw in a QB who could easily lose a foot race to Herman Munster and things could have been far worse.
Kudos to the ‘D’ who made great halftime adjustments.
Gotta get some guys back …

  10. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I’ve seen more imagitive play calling on offense from a PEE WEE football coached team than what I did today.

    The offense was just awful.

  11. Miller5252 Says:

There were a lot more crappy calls and penalty’s that were worse then that. Did Bruce take the playbook with him when he retired?!?! A 3 pitch flee flicker?!?! Holy heck the offense looks horrible. Byron ain’t going anywhere if this keeps going. WOW BAD!!

  12. August 1976 Buc Says:

At least Gage earned his pay check, great catch, but all for not, Brady sleeping on 2 point play

    GO BUCS!!!!

  13. PaBucsFan Says:

Bowles needs to take the play calling away from Leftwich. Even when he had Mike and Julio and Chris in Dallas, the play calling was atrocious.

  14. coleB Says:

    @Joes

I understand the injuries and lack of production from our reserve WO’s but how can you NOT even consider him leaving for those 10 days doesnt matter. THIS OFFENSE IS A TRAVASTY! He seems to have no chemistry with any of these dudes (and this was showing with Mike, Chris and Julio in the freakin Dallas game) And yes oh boy are we missing Gronk! and btw, Cole Beasley and those weird diving catches when he didnt need to do that must be why he was still on the street. What the freck?!

  15. Leftwichgottago Says:

Leftwich must go period. The end. Or this is what you will get all year.

  16. Displaced Floridian Says:

That was tough. After three games we should feel
    relieved we are 2-1.

  17. BigMacAttack Says:

The injuries caught up to us today. Perrimans fumble killed us, but goes back to losing 3 top receivers. The defense played outstanding in the second half. At least we lost to a good team. The O line was definitely a detriment most of the game. It’s only one game and the Bucs will get better. Not too worried about it really but need adjustments and players back.

  18. Spicoli0525 Says:

The knee jerk reactions from everyone in here lol. Nothing’s wrong with the OC, we’ve had a top ranked offensive since he’s been with TB12. We have a 4th string LT, replacement C and we resurrected Cole Beasley. GB is a good team, it sucks the 2pt got messed up, on to next week’s opponent!

  19. BUCkleup Says:

Poor coaching leads to poor execution

  20. Ed Says:

Offensive failures. Predictable play calling. As much as Darden has been a bust as a returner he did get separation and deserves more targets. Miller can’t get open.

Devin White, where were you today?

  21. BigMacAttack Says:

Lenny had a good game. Up tempo definitely helps this offense.

  22. Hodad Says:

Tom’s been looking every bit the 45 year QB. He had a senior moment Joe like you, and me. All kidding aside, when you look at all the young dynamic play makers around the league the Bucs have ZERO. No fast change of pace backs, the Bills, and Chiefs have three of them. No young dynamic receivers who can take the top off the defense. We have cole Beasley off the street, Perriman no other team wanted, Gage who sucks. This team won’t be getting any younger, or faster anytime soon. Brady shoulda stayed retired.

  23. BigMacAttack Says:

Scotty Miller isn’t good at all anymore. That Fleeflicker was a terrible call but Miller blew that one too. He needs the go.

  24. Bucamania Says:

3rd string LT and backup WRs who came up small, mostly. Scotty Miller does not belong.

  25. Casual Observer Says:

These are professionals. Should never happen with such a crucial play.

  26. Architek Says:

I want Miller off this team asap!!!!

  27. JimmyJack Says:

Basically how they day went. 3 other drives were ruined by OL pentalties. Its taking too long for this offense to come together. Luckily its still early in season but its timr to quit fooling around.

  28. Listnfrmafar Says:

Go back and watch it, Brady changed it to a run, got Lenny in position and started frantically clapping his hands. Unfortunately the green center either didn’t hear him or wasn’t aware of the urgency. All that aside, what about the drive killing triple reverse pass when the O was moving the ball? Penalties, turnovers, thank God the D woke up that was going to be a blowout. Scotty Miller sucks, Darden had a great catch but no return guy. Positive note, other than the costly turnover Gage is what the team was hoping for unfortunately he’s probably going to be out for the next three weeks. There were a lot of 1st downs where Bucs threw when they should of run and I’m sorry when you’re pinned back on the one, run the ball. Another screw up by Darden, block someone so it goes into the end zone.

  29. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

No Evans, Godwin or Jones. No Donovan Smith either. This team will get better.

  30. Daryl Green Says:

I’ve seen this before. We 16 Banners hang from the forum to staples.
as soon as they hired Mike Brown I was down. Now my Bucs.
    I telling y’all I get it’s week 3. Byron is Mike Brown.
The Goat jeopardize his Marriage for Bowl.

HE SHOULD OF CALL A TIME OUT @5and change mark.
    What the ……. COACH

  31. Daryl Green Says:

    This hurts me

  32. David Says:

It seemed to me on that play, and most the day, Brady spent a lot of time telling people where to line up and trying to direct players. Beasley, I understand, even Gage a little, but the rest of them, there is no excuse.

  33. Jmarkbuc Says:

Never ever let Scotty try and run with the ball. It fails Every. Single. Time.

  34. Tvan101 Says:

Leftwich is a bum and now we all know, without Arians correcting plays we are in trouble.

  35. bucsfaninva Says:

Wow…I understand everyone’s anger with Leftwich…you don’t want to be in my house right now…my wife is “inconsolable”. But lest we forget, let’s have a brief moment of silence for the games biggest injury. You’re right…Tom Brady’s knee brace. Wow, that thing was just WRECKED from that slide. *sigh*. (And yeah…”of course” there was holding…uggh!). It wasn’t all bad…knowing major components of the offense were out, it highlights the risk of hiring older players. I don’t know why, but while I am annoyed, I was just not surprised by the outcome. They expended a LOT of energy winning the first two road games. I guess time will tell how all of this plays out next week. But seeing Indy beating KC…well that sure as heck surprised me! Be safe everyone.

  36. Daryl Green Says:

Tommy nor Gronk healthy WR. can save us from the coaching,
We are about 2 experience. I’m tired.

  37. Tvan101 Says:

Also picking Scotty Miller over Tyler Johnson looks pretty bad.

  38. Bucamania Says:

Uh yeah, Scotty was getting abused all day. Seen enough of that.

  39. ModHairKen Says:

Turnovers. Inexperienced OL and a slow start on Defense.

    Not one penalty.

  40. Oxycondoms Says:

Brady couldvd called a timeout if bucs didnt run the ball2 plays earlier

  41. Jack Sparrow Says:

1st and 20, BL calls a run play straight up the gut…. if that does not get you fired, I dont know what else.

  42. Bucsfan13 Says:

Evaluate the entire game instead of one play. When we put the ball in Brady’s hand, we started to move the ball. The man completed nearly 70% of his passes, but let’s blame him. The Perriman fumble costs us at least a FG. Brady didn’t turn the ball over. Remember, he had three picks the last time he played the Packers.

The knee jerk reactions from everyone in here lol. Nothing’s wrong with the OC, we’ve had a top ranked offensive since he’s been with TB12.

    ______________________________________

Right, because of TB12, an all-pro / HOF quarterback.

Along with an all-pro / HOF tight end.

    And 2 – 3 pro-bowl / all-pro / possibly HOF wide receivers.

Plus a couple pro bowl and all-pro offensive lineman.

But what about once you give him an average group of guys, like we had today? Then he has nothing.

Zero creativity. Zero scheming guys open. I’ve been pounding my fists about this since 2019. The scheme relies on simply having better players, not on creative routes / blocking.

  44. Darin Says:

A double reverse flea flicker after finally getting some momentum. Great call lefty. Can’t wait to see what ya got next week

  45. Pewter Power Says:

Nah I don’t know about all of that but not as bad as forgetting what down it is. We’ll figure it out like we did a couple years ago

  46. Buczilla Says:

The entire offense, including the coaches get an F today. Hard game to watch. We need Mike back in a bad way.

  47. captivajim Says:

couldn’t agree more with Jack Sparrow

  48. PewterStiffArm Says:

What a copy cat nightmare, this is definitely Brady’s last hurrah. This team needs a spark of speed. Can anyone spell Devin Thompkins. Scotty never comes back to fight for the ball!!!, and the NFL speed has caught up to Darden.

  49. Listnfrmafar Says:

Jack, I forgot about 1st & 20 run up the gut. What was that?

  50. Listnfrmafar Says:

It is so obvious Darden is afraid to get hit, I can’t believe coaches don’t see that. He maybe good in practice but there is no hitting. Can you say White? He didn’t run out of bounds on his kick return, he took the hit.

  51. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

    Ed Says:
“Devin White, where were you today?”
    .
    .

Over-running his inside-out responsibility on the screen pass, and shoulder tackling running backs for an extra 3 yards instead of lowering his pads and stuffing them in the hole.

  52. Browsing from DC Says:

Looked to me after.watching the replay about 5 times that Brady audibles to a run play, moved a couple of guys, tried to get the snap but Hainsey didn’t seem to hear him. Was the crowd noise too much and caused the delay of game? Pretty much looked like it

FWIW, the run play was the right call and Lenny scored easily. Lol

2 and 1 with all these injuries, new guys and the opponents we had to face isn’t too bad. But it’s frustrating as hell watching an anemic offense that was poised to be unstoppable before all of the injuries, etc.

Hopefully they find a cure before they eat up with KC next week. They’re going to need to score a bunch in that game

  53. Hodad Says:

Call a play and run it, good or bad. That penalty is on Brady. Hainsey can’t snap the ball until Brady asked for it. Time ran out. If BL calls the right play, Brady wouldn’t need to change it. Can’t blame a second year player for that one.

  54. beano Says:

The GOAT ain’t making didly of a difference, put Trask or Gabbert in.

  55. Alstott up the gut Says:

I don’t understand why the Bucs didn’t get their timeout back after the packer injury!? They honestly ran out of time on the touchdown scoring play too…. That end was as exciting as it was unorganized and confusing.

  56. Rick w Says:

I love brady but he looks miserable don’t underestimate this wife drama screwing up his last season. I hope I’m wrong and he leads them back to the super bowl

  57. Tj996 Says:

Well, there was actually 2 delay of game penalties on that drive, back to back. The fact is that only 1 was called DOG was amazing. Both teams had great defenses, and two great HOF QB’s had to do the best with what they had for pass catchers.

  58. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

The worst thing about the delay of game, is that EVERYbody knew that we were going for two after a touchdown. Leftfoot should have known what the play was going to be for like at least 5 minutes before they had to run it. The only thing that gets him off the hook is if there was a problem on the field after the call was made to Brady.

  59. MarkR Says:

    Delay of Game?; Absolutely INEXCUSABLE!
Leftwich should have had the initial play called before they even scored, so that Tom could line up, snap the ball immediately, change the play at the line, or do whatever he da_n pleased with plenty of time. It looks like Hainsey missed a beat on the snap, a big-time rookie mistake, but the offensive play calling overall was awful.
Typical Bowles offensive production. I’ve said it all along, he is a terrible offensive coach and will do nothing to correct Leftwich tentative play calling.
(… and who calls a timeout with an Opposing injured player is on the ground?)

  60. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Should have never let B.A. walk away from the sideline!!

  61. Two delays one thy caught bad call on qb Says:

Qb sucks two delays one caught bad call

  62. Ohta Says:

Been saying for 3 years that Byron’s playing calling is atrocious. Now that our line is busted up and all of our elite WRs are hurt his bad play calling is just starting to show even a lot more than before.

  63. AbucAway Says:

A double reverse flea flicker… Let that sink in.

  64. Suggiefresh Says:

So, In the last three minutes, the Bucs called a timeout but the Packers had an injured player, at the same time.. The Bucs were never given that time out back and because of that we didn’t have any time outs left.

  65. Buffalo54 Says:

    They were late for dinner!

  66. Oneilbuc Says:

To me Brady played ok those fumbles were the problem but I just hope that kills this Brady makes every one good narrative that the media started. It’s about the team Brady played good enough to win this game. Our defense was great but it doesn’t matter who the quarterback is fumbles will kill a game. I do want to see Rashard White run the ball because I’m tired of drafting these running backs and not using them and we blame them for not getting a chance to run the ball.

  67. garro Says:

Although there is never ever an excuse for a delay of game penalty (unless you are punting)…I sure would like to know what the bleep really happened. Joe?…
