Tristan Wirfs Possibly In Doubt For Week 1

August 19th, 2022

Injured.

Reports are floating around social media and the interwebs that All-Pro right tackle Tristan Wirfs may be out a few weeks.

Wirfs, per reports, strained an oblique muscle in a joint practice with Tennessee yesterday. Joe sort of speculated the injury earlier Thursday the way a Bucs trainer was working on him.

Cursory research by the magic of Google suggests that the recovery time from a strained oblique is a “few weeks.” Additionally, this injury can linger if not healed properly.

To look at this with a glass-half-full lens, last year Ali Marpet had an oblique strain during the season and he only missed one game.

In theory, when the Bucs open the season in Dallas in 23 days, they will be without last year’s starting left guard, center, right guard and now, potentially, their right tackle.

Oh, and the quarterback. 🙁

Other than that, how was the car ride, Mrs. Kennedy?

I glad it doesn’t appear to be serious but this is such a downer, he is so important I really hope he is like marpet and only needs a week to heal

  2. unbelievable Says:

Injury bug is apparently gonna be worse than last year.

It was fun while it lasted.

LOL. Jesus H. Christ, it is interesting to see people utter these type of comments when the season has not even started yet. Calm the F down, dude.

  4. Bucsfan13 Says:

Maybe Brady is without a TV in whatever remote area of South America Gisele aka Yoko Ono dragged him to. Let’s hope he doesn’t find out about the Wirfs injury before he’s back with the team.

  5. OBVIOUS Says:

Why do I have a feeling that the sports medicine and trainers are about to be looking for work VERY SOON? Much of these injuries have to do with a simple thing called hydration… I’m not suggesting that, that’s the end all ~ be all but, It Is their department that is supposed to insure that these type of injuries don’t happen! With the exceptions of broken feet and popped knees, pulled Anything has to do with propper stretching and Hydration! WAY too much going on here! Way Too Much!

  6. unbelievable Says:

Perhaps I’m still suffering from Bucs fan PTSD.

But Jensen, Wirfs, Evans, Gage, Permian all with varying degrees of injuries, plus 2 new starting guards….

    Oh and where is Brady?

Just a bizarre offseason. Then again so was 2020. The difference is our team leader was having extra practices; not less of them.

  7. CleanHouse Says:

Brady ought to just start a few weeks into the season- 9 and 8 is my prediction

  8. steele Says:

So a so-far not inspired 45 yr old Tom Brady lines up behind Smith/Stinnie/Hainsey/Mason/Wells. Floodgates. Defenses don’t need to send blitzes through the LG spot, but will have the luxury of anywhere on the line.
That would be enough to send him back to retirement, where he would at least be safe from blackout concussions.

  9. Alvafan Says:

Yeah Demon. It gets late early. Open up your eyes. Our HOF QB is AWOL. 3 out of our top 4 receivers can’t practice. Oh and we’ve got one O lineman left that started last year. Did I mention a new head coach and probably the most difficult schedule in the NFL. But come on mon sing it with me mon don’t worry be happy! Don’t worry be happy! Don’t worry be happy! There you go. Feel better now. I sure do.

Completely understand, man. Sorry for the outburst.
    I GET it. —

    But, thankfully it is EARLY.
    Much to look forward to.

    Cheers, bro.
    GO BUCS

  11. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

    Alvafan,

LMAO dude. Well played. I didn’t say I had rose colored glasses on. I have been watching this game passionately for almost 40 years.

I am JUST saying… that yes, there are things that are not ideal, challenges in front of us… but that is ALL part of the fun. Embrace it, overcome it, and see what happens.

    They are our BUCS.
We love em. Lets see what happens.

  12. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

But yea, the injuries F’ing suck.

  13. westernbuc Says:

    Blaine won’t have a chance

    Joking! (Maybe)

  14. Anon Says:

Many doctors on Twitter say Wirfs should be ready by Week 1 especially since it sounds like it was not a severe injury but minor.

Joebucsfan is just being his usual dramatic diva self. What else is new though, he needs us all to click the articles.
A very silly take. 1) It was Joe who Tweeted at the scene how minor-looking everything was. 2) Joe will approach 28 million pages viewed here for the calendar year 2022. Joe doesn’t need drama clicks. 3) Joe provides strong injury context in this article about Ali Marpet in 2021. 4) If you think the Bucs aren’t going to be very careful with Wirfs, a true cornerstone franchise player, then you’re not paying attention. If sitting WEek 1 would help him over the rest of the season, it’s a safe bet he’ll be out.–Joe

  15. Lorena Says:

According to doctors on Twitter Wirfs will likely miss 2-3 weeks starting from when he got the injury which will place him right on time to start in the Dallas game.

Also it’s worth noting that Dallas has a non-existent pass rush especially since they got rid of Randy Gregory.

  16. Colonel Angus Says:

Some mentally weak sissies in these comment sections.

  17. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

    Yea, kinda.
    Embrace the G D challenge.

  18. Bucs Guy Says:

Is Shaq Mason practicing? Just haven’t heard his name at all — though that can be a good thing for an offensive lineman.

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Other than that, how was the car ride, Mrs. Kennedy?’

THAT’S your bottom line? Really Joe? Or should we start calling you Debbie Downer? I’m hoping that the ‘other Joe’ is more optimistic.

  20. Hodad Says:

How was the car ride? I bit bumpy going over the bridge! Wirfs will start game one, so will Tom brady. They can both sit the fourth quarter when we’re up by 40!

  21. J Ghotier Says:

No way FORTY-FIVE year old Tom Brady plays Week 1 under a line w/ only one returning starter in a season that he didn’t get knocked down much, but admitted the season’s body soreness after the conclusion of it

45yr old Tom Brady I just can’t see getting playing w/ a line Week 1 that may only have Donovan Smith back…..the rest is discontinuities!

  22. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

last time i checked this was a preseason game, by the time Dallas rolls around we should be fine mostly IMO…….. but i really hope considering the injuries last year are they implementing a better stretching and hydration regiment for all players? i sure hope so

  23. Bird Says:

Do we warm up/stretch before practice? Maybe spend extra 15 minutes. Focus 5 minutes on hammies alone.
    Our training staff sucks 😂

This should be a warning. For key players, no preseason. Sorry. If injury happens during regular season live game then it happens.

But this will happen all over the league. Limited contact in practices …underwear football most of the way…now go play hard in joint practices/ preseason/ 17 game season. First few weeks of season will have player after player go down like in years past.

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Let’s get a prediction from Booger….

  25. Bird Says:

    Tampabaybucfan

Booger said he would be out 2 years. 😂

  26. Marc Coppola Says:

Tom Brady not being around for preseason is a good thing. Pretty much 0% chance of catching the injury big that has been going around. Rather have it plaguing our team now than in theplayoffs, like last year.

  27. Oddball Says:

The sky is falling, the sky is falling…

  28. geno711 Says:

It is funny how guys talk like the sky is falling when the Cowboys and Saints are missing every bit as many guys as we are and are more likely to be missing more guys (at least right now) when we play them in regular season games.

  29. BridleOaksBuc Says:

    GET ‘EM JOE!!!!!

  30. Kentucky Buc Says:

Every team in the league has guys dinged up. One real freak injury . The rest are dings. Happens every year to every team

  31. Kentucky Buc Says:

Oh and Geno711 stop using facts and common sense. Nobody wants to hear it. 😂

  32. RONALD MASIK Says:

Practice your talking practice a old Colts couch once said.

  33. BucTooth Says:

Relax everyone step back take a breath of fresh air the worlds not coming to a end it’s just practice right now my goodness.

  34. NCBucfan Says:

According to Dr McFarland, Wirfs won’t be back until at least after Germany.

  35. Ash Says:

Lol These comments are fun to read.

  36. Goatfarmer Says:

Shut down the preseason, suspend practice, put everyone into strength, conditioning and pliability training. Get everyone virtual reality goggles for mental reps. This is ridiculous. The NFL already screwed the Bucs with the schedule, now the injury bug from last year has gone epidemic.

Going for Bloody Mary number 3.

Wirfs is not going to sit week 1, he’ll be ready. All of our offense side from Jensen will be there.

Tristan Wirfs left practice a few plays early but Todd Bowles says Wirfs just cramped up.

Funny how people have head for doctors about this. SMH

Funny no one is talking about this report..

  41. Joe Says:

    JonCyn90:

Wirfs cramped up two weeks ago. What’s there to talk about? He practiced regularly since (until yesterday).

  42. Allbuccedup Says:

Hope Brady doesn’t retire again. The news keeps getting worse.

  43. Mike Johnson Says:

Its Football. Tough sport. Injuries will happen and more will occur. NEXT MAN. UP

  44. Buc92’ Says:

Honestly if Tom quits , I’m excited about Trask with the starters he’d improve game to game .. we’d still win the division seriously

    Gobucs!

  45. Lakeland Steve Says:

Wirfs will be playing in week 1. The dude tried playing on just one leg. No way he’s not there for Dallas. By the way, maybe Brady is spending his time away on a little vacation with his family and Gronk trying to convince Gronk to return.

  46. Jeff Says:

Already doomed by injuries and the season hasn’t even started. Tennessee is going to brutalize the Bucs on Sat. There will be more significant depth injuries. Mark the tape. And Gabbert starts the season and Kyle Trash finishes it.
