Practice Lowlights

August 22nd, 2022

Rookie Bucs TE Ko Kieft has the ball punched out of his gut while scrimmaging against the Titans in Nashville last week.

Joe realizes lots of fans savor practice footage shared by the Buccaneers on social media and their website.

But there’s a common thread to those clips. No Bucs player ever seems to make a mistake.

Joe gets it. It’s a highlight package designed to excite fans. And yes, most fans realize official team coverage is sort of like the NFL version of The Truman Show. A team could be on a seven-game losing streak and a fan reading the team website might never know it.

So just for fun, Joe is linking here to the Tennessee Titans official highlights from their joint practices with the Bucs last week. It’s almost like a glimpse at the dark side, since it includes various Bucs mistakes.

The video closes with rookie tight end Ko Kieft getting stripped on a third-down play (screen shot above), and you’ll also see safety Logan Ryan beaten a couple of times and an underthrow of rookie tight end Cade Otton by Blaine Gabbert, and more.

Also seen is how the Bucs defense lets up at times (Devin White, Sean Murphy-Bunting and more) to avoid dangerous contact with the Titans quarterback or skill position players.

It’s part of the phony reality of August football.

Typical preseason highlight reels. The local press articles are also home-spun, which is why it makes sense to counterbalance by seeing what the press of the opposing team has to say.

The Tampa Bay defensive secondary hasn’t been faring well during joint practices. That is a concern, but I’d rather see some real games before making a final conclusion. Practices feature man coverage, while zone coverage is something you’ll see on more downs when the games become real.

You can’t blame the Official Bucs Website for accentuating the positive…..after all, it’s the team’s site…..
Can’t you see the headlines…….”Bowles risks team future by playing Stinnie”

“Luke Goedeke isn’t ready” “Brady takes an extended vacation an my not return”

These headlines are reserved for JBF & others….

Rasheed White will have to get used to NFL Defenders trying to punch the ball out of his control.
I think he will be ok, once he makes the ball control adjustments.
Ko Kieft is a very unique player, and word on him is, he is a great blocker.
He played for PJ Fleck, our ex coach, in College at Minnesota.
No way would PJ Fleck have any receiver play for him, if he can not catch the ball!
I am excited about him and Cade Otten, and wonder why we grabbed Kyle Rudolph, who looks done to me.

The Tampa Bay website may show highlights of only great plays, but they always cover who was good and bad in practice. That’s taking a cheap shot at Scott, Cassie and their entire crew. What are you Joe, drunk? Jerry, Joe is neither drunk nor taking a cheap shot. Joe is speaking in reality. The balance is rarely there on any team website in any sport. It’s by design and it’s ok. That’s the job, and that’s why some teams invest millions in payroll, studio space, cameras, etc., in addition to paid programming and managing their own broadcasts in preseason.–Joe

Its good to see some objectivity about the team and know what might be needed for the bucs to go back to the Super Bowl. How did BSPN choose their reporter that covers the bucs she is gawd awful

  6. Goatfarmer Says:

Just don’t get Brady hurt between now and Dallas. Tom should have taken them all to the Bahamas . He could have had group meetings between Geezella and the offensive line. I’m sure she’s have a few things to say that would be inspiring.

  7. GOB Says:

At least you’re not the Patriots. Everything looks bad.

  8. Cobraboy Says:

These clips are also seen by teams in film sessions, with a lot of yelling going on.

I’m OK with poor PS gameplay, just for coaches to yell and keep guys humble.

    Highlight film not necessary.
I watched the preseason game against the Titans
    It wasnt easy.
Pretty sure that we cant afgord to lose any starters. Our backups are bad.
    Really bad.

I wouldnt wanna ve Tom Brady this year. Looks like we are back to being the bucs

Wow, the Titans post a 2 min video, that’s epic. The stupid shaky cam videos that the Bucs post are always like 42 seconds long, and like 20 seconds of that is slow motion of a QB snapping the ball. Seriously, whoever the Bucs have hired to do their social media is an idiot who clearly doesn’t know a thing about football. No one wants to watch a 30-second ad for 42 seconds of a shaky cell phone video where you have no idea what is going on.

Interesting perspective Joe and thank you for pointing this out — especially in this world where the”unviZes media” only presents one side of a story (if they bring g it up at all),
