No Contact Allowed For Chris Godwin

August 5th, 2022

Chris Godwin

Yes, the exciting news of the day is the return of Chris Godwin to practice after his ugly ACL (knee) injury back in December.

Godwin was with his Bucs brothers in pads and wasn’t limping around or looking weak. But he was only doing things that didn’t involve contact — or much chance of contact.

That was to be expected, though head coach Todd Bowles said following practice that there is no current timetable for Godwin to participate in a full practice. Bowles emphasized that Godwin’s recovery from surgery won’t be rushed.

Joe’s keeping the perspective that opening day is Sept. 11 … and it’s Aug. 5. No, Joe doesn’t expect to see Godwin in a preseason game. Perhaps in the preseason finale, only if he’s lined up wide and isn’t targeted so he can get a little timing work under the bright lights.

What’s most important here is Godwin being ready to fire full throttle in October — yes, October. September would be nice, but Joe would be more than happy if Godwin is only a part-time player in September as he ramps up his readiness.

    Bubble wrap.

Too early to tell when he is playing. The team allowing him limited practice at this time does not really mean he is playing at all in September.

It makes me hopeful, but it was his ACL and MCL.

Many take a year before coming back strong.

However, we can always look to Gronk for a good story. Gronk also tore both his ACL and MCL in December 2014 so the time frame is the same.

Gronk played the opening game of 2015 and caught 5 passes for 94 yards and 3 TDs. Amazing.

Gronk had a very good year in 2015. 72 catches, 1176 yards and 11 TDs.
In the playoffs Gronk had 15 catches, 225 yards, 3 TDs in two games.

Good. I want the team to err on the side of caution, maybe keep him off the field for a few games, and gradually increase his snaps afterward.

He does NOT need any contact before the first game of the regular season

  5. GOB Says:

Still don’t understand why he didn’t start on pup.

Don’t need contact…..we have plenty of WRs to smack around.

    @GOB

Probably to use the next 30+ days between now and the season opener to gauge Godwins’ knee and where he’s at in his recovery. Not too sure, if he were on the PUP list if he’d be allowed at the team facility. Put him on the PUP list, Godwin wouldn’t be allowed to be at practice and would have to wait 4 games to get activated.

I was hoping for pup list too….

    I don’t want them to rush anything…

I know it’s different sports but I’m thinking Klay Thompson….acl injury…came back too early and then suffered another injury

    GO BUCS

    WOW !! .
having gone thru torn ACL & MCL myself from a ski accident; I am really impressed !! To believe that you can now run .turn & leap like that is tough mentally–” can i trust that knee”.. But he’s obviously gotten past that …

    Really GREAT news ..

I am guessing that the Buc’s medical staff as well as his surgeon and Godwin have all agreed that he can do limited things on the Buc’s training field without reinjuring the knee.

And if he was still on the PUP list, he could not practice like he did today.

Patriots safety Devin McCourty recalled a moment during the 2015 preseason before scrimmaging with New Orleans after Gronk having an ACL/MCL tear in December 2014. Gronk was there participating as much as the doctors would allow him in West Virginia. 1st game he played in 2015 was the opening game of the year. 5 catches, 94 yards and 3 TDs. It can be done. Hopefully, Godwin can be like Gronk in 2015.

Damn! Superman! Love CG! GO BUCS!!

Bucs are fortunately loaded at WR, no need to rush Godwin back. Work him back patiently, wait until he’s 98 or 99% before putting him in a game. More important that he’s 100% for last 8 games plus playoffs.

  13. Rich S Says:

No need to get Godwin hurt, without him we still have the best receivers in the NFL

CG14 looked pretty da##ed agile for a guy who got his knee wrecked by a cheap shot. He’s getting himself back in playing shape. Now, hopefully, he won’t try and overdue it. He sure doesn’t have to as he already has a SB ring.
