“It’s Ryan’s Job”

August 10th, 2022

Bucs kicker Ryan Succop

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles offered up insight into the Tampa Bay kicking competition today.

And make no mistake, it is a competition between veteran and Super Bowl-season hero Ryan Succop and second-year man Jose Borregales. Succop turns 36 next month and earns a lot of money; Borregales was college football’s top kicker in 2020 and spent last season on the Bucs’ practice squad.

Seemingly everyone with a fancy title at One Buc Palace has said for months that Succop will be in an open competition for his job this season.

Today on WDAE radio, Bowles a deeper take on his pending decision.

Bowles is all about consistency, he said, noting Borregales has the big leg but Succop has years of consistency under his belt and that shouldn’t be discounted. However, Bowles said Borregales has been consistent and will need to show he can take that through preseason as both have had a good camp.

It seems Borregelas is going to have to kick like Rams Pro Bowler Matt Guy  his ass off to win the job this month.

“He’s gotta take the job,” Bowles said. “It’s Ryan’s job, but Borregales has been closing the gap, steady and steady, so preseason, we’ll see.”

Joe doesn’t think Bowles would be afraid to go with Borregales. His history with the Jets says he wouldn’t be. But he certainly should be terrified of cutting Succop if he’s had a consistent camp. Joe suspects there’s no desire to move on from Succop — unless he gives the team a couple of good reasons.

Quite simple to me….Ryan, it’s your job if you take a nice cut in pay……

  2. RajBucsFan Says:

I know roster can only be 53, but part of me wishes we kept Succop for 45 and in and Borreagles for 46 and out. Won’t happen sadly

  3. Goatfarmer Says:

    Raj, my sentiment also. Both.

But they can’t afford the roster spot.

  4. Tbbucs3 Says:

Bowels should end this fake kicking competition narrative. Succop had been a great kicker for the Bucs, one of the best in Bucs history. Some postions dont need competition.

  5. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I did not know Matt Gay made the pro bowl. So Licht is vindicated.

  6. Crickett Baker Says:

Griffin is still on the team, so if they can only keep two, he is the only one that’s gone imo.

  7. Maniac Buc Says:

Just go ahead and band Jose B the starter and get this sham of a competition over with. It’s not Succop’s job at all. Succop is the “if Jose isn’t as good as we think, well at least we still have Ryan” guy. As long as Jose B does what he’s supposed to do, no matter how well Ryan kicks, he won’t win the job.

  8. PSL Bob Says:

Can they keep Borregales on the practice squad another year?

  9. David Says:

    PSL BOB

    That’s what I was wondering.
If they’re inside 45 yards suck up is still pretty automatic. Outside of that, youngster definitely has an advantage. Of course, if the Buccaneers are between the 35 and 50 yard line they might end up going for it a lot, even with Bowles as coach

  10. Anonymous Says:

Call JC tretter we definitely need him if not coach you’re going to mess everything up Brady’s going to get hurt

  11. Anonymous Says:

Coach bowls should listen to his quarterback he’s the professional get him some help as far as Center goes protect him at all costs

  12. Mike Says:

Rip the band aid off and go with the young guy.

  13. Goatfarmer Says:

Remember they brought Pinion out to try a 60+ and he came close. Put the punter to work on the bombs

  14. Jp09 Says:

Bucs have the money, no need to cut Succup to create cap space. He’s been consistent and reliable. Succup should remain the starter and stash Borregales on the practice squad and protect him each week incase Succup gets injured

  15. #99 Says:

The minute the bucs cut borregales on final cuts another team will scoop him up immediately..no way to hide him for the practice squad..

  16. Beej Says:

O’Donoghue, Bryant, and now Gay. Get rid of good kicker, get screwed by replacement, rinse and repeat

  17. bucfan34 Says:

JC Tretter doesn’t kick very well. Just saying…

  18. Beej Says:

    TOTAL loser then

  19. WVBuc Says:

Seems the Bucs can keep both kickers on the roster by making one of them inactive each week. Is there any rule that prohibits a PK or P being one of the inactives on game day? The kicker who is inactive may not care for that arrangement but I’m fairly sure they couldn’t do more than request a trade.

Kicking drama! It’s too much for me to take. I’ll never last the season. GOBUCS!
