Camp Quickie

August 2nd, 2022

The players in the kicker battle, challenger Jose Borregales (left) and Super Bowl-season hero Ryan Succop. Joe’s got an update and more.

Joe’s taking quick air conditioning break at Bucs training camp practice — Day 6 — so why not type something up?

Ryan Succop stepped up to the plate first among the kickers in a special teams period devoted to him. Succop is in a legit competition with Jose Borregales, who was on the Bucs’ practice squad last season and was a stud in college during the 2020 season.

Succop made all his attempts, consecutive attempts from 28, 32, 38, 41, 45, 49 and 51 yards. Impressive, though the 45-yarder didn’t have a lot of juice to it. It’s unclear if Borregales will kick later. He’s had the stronger leg in camp but has missed his share but nothing noteworthy on the negative side.

Center Robert Hainsey’s changing-of-the-towel has become a PG-13 event and a crowd favorite. Joe’s not going to explain the towel here, just think a baby powder drenched white towel shoved down his ass but wrapped around front, as well. Quite a spectacle. It reminds Joe of Lebron James at midcourt when Hainsey pulls out the used one.

Veteran safety Keanu Neal cracked rookie Rachaad White in the hole, and Rakeem Nuñez-Roches celebrated. More hitting today, but nothing crazy or much. (More on that later.) Neal takes fantastic angles, at least he was today.

Rookie guard Luke Goedeke is a take-no-prisoners kind of guy. He locked up with second-year linebacker K.J. Britt and it ended with the two having to be broken up. First mini-skirmish of the day.

Lots of “Let’s Go Kyle” chants for one of the most popular third-string quarterbacks in Bucs history.

@Hodad. Smith was the same guy who said we would lose in the Wild Card round to Washington. Brady made him eat his words.

Most popular 3rd string QB in Bucs history?

Probably true but I’d throw in Bruce Gradkowski and Josh Johnson for consideration.
