Killing The Draft

July 26th, 2022

Draft king.

Many Bucs fans fully overlook or never factor in the key reason Tom Brady chose Tampa Bay over so many other NFL teams.

Brady thought he had a chance to win here. And why is that? Because Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht stocked the cupboard.

As Joe noted yesterday, Licht is quietly becoming a draft savant. And the numbers back this up.

Generally, if you draft a player and he is good enough to warrant a second contract, that means you hit on the player. If he sticks around for a third or longer contract, that’s nailing the pick.

Well, per research from Dal Brown of The33rdTeam.com, only one team has cleaned up in the draft better than Licht. Brown did a study of teams that drafted the most players who earned a second contract with the team, and only the Packers are doing a better job at keeping their picks than Licht and the Bucs.

This is also why BSPN believes even after (if?) Brady retires, the Bucs have a good enough core to still be a top-10 squad.

How do you build such a diverse, deep roster? By nailing the draft. And Licht has really done the job.

Well that’s great to hear. Let’s hope his Kyle Trask pick isn’t a complete bust if and when we ever see him in a real game.

  2. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Licht would be #1 on the list if he would stop drafting kickers.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We didn’t have the cap space to resign two draft picks last year…..Cappa & WHitehead…..you could make an argument that Rojo was good enough to resign….
We will have problems next year with Dean, SMB, Edwards & Nelson…..

Yes…Licht is doing a great job with the draft….

I actually think this year may be one of his very best.

  4. Allbuccedup Says:

Juries still out on 2021 and 2022 draft. But besides kickers hes been drafting pretty well in the last few years.

  5. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Licht was pretty bad at first. I’m wondering if he revamped the college scouting department after the first couple of years. Fewer misses since he started.

  6. Infomeplease Says:

I sure hope his Darden pick pans out!!

  7. Craig Says:

I hope he learned a lot from RoJo.

I also hope our two tight ends don’t get trashed by an injury. O.J. was almost on his way before the Achilles injury.

I almost have faith in his DE and linemen, but the draft is still pretty much of a crapshoot.

    Where’s T-Rex? Oh yeah. Extinct.

  9. Dooley Says:

It’s kind of gotten to the point there are 2nd contracts we aren’t going to be able to sign certain players to because they’re value increased beyond what we’re willing to afford. Lose a Jordan Whitehead, so you go sign Keanu Neal to be your new safety/moneybacker. Lost Alex Cappa and luckily for us Bill Belichek was probably planning on jedi mindtricking the rest of the league drafting Cole Strange so early, that he had no problems letting Shaq Mason go for a minimal return.

  10. Chris Tucker@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Licht has gotten a LOT better at drafting, ever since Arians and his bunch arrived.
But as far as Brady goes, we have the 49ers to thank for him.
They did not want Brady, so we were his second choice.
I just read that Alex Cappa was put on the PUP List with the Bengals.
Cappa was a real Gem found by Licht from a very tiny school.

John Spytek is Licht’s right hand man, and I am shocked no other team has went after him.

  11. Goatfarmer Says:

Dardung will only pan out if he becomes a chef. He’s got no stomach for NFL hitting. He is AppState Dexter Jackson revisited.

  12. SlyPirate Says:

There are successful and unsuccessful teams on the top, middle, and bottom of this list. This stat is the perfect indicator of nothing.

  13. It's A Bucs Life Says:

Too bad our draft from 2021 killed any chances of a repeat.

  14. Gettinthebucs Says:

Yeah we’ve come a long way draft wise. I still cringe at all the horrible gruden drafts. Dominik bombed quite a bit too. Still can’t believe wirfs just to fell to us a couple years ago.

  15. Allbuccedup Says:

Wirfs was the best athlete of the 4 top OTs that year. The other GMs listened to all the hype of the other 3 tackles. Mel Kipper and all the so called experts do not any more about these players than I do so at least the Bucs don’t listen to these guys thats probably why their draft is better.

  16. MadMax Says:

MR LICHT also started listening to some of this site too….even the Joes were hyping Godwin. But hey, nothing wrong with that…some people are just great at their hobbies and have a working crystal ball sitting on horse shoe and a rabbits foot, lol.

  17. Mikejp Says:

It is surprising that the Patriots is the 4th worst team. So, signing a 2nd contract may be not a good indicator of successful draft. The Pats usually let the players gone or trade out.

  18. It's A Bucs Life Says:

Mikejp, Pats really are not good at drafting for the most part.

  19. Red Skeleton Says:

The players we didn’t sign to a second contract signed second contracts elsewhere. That means they are still in the league and add to his drafting score!!!

  20. GOB Says:

Mikejp, you’re correct. Bill almost never gives a second contract. In the instances he has, it’s almost always a holdout situation. He’s so arrogant about the process, that he thinks he can go get the next guy. It’s why he traded Mason. Hardly any players in NE have played through their second deal

  21. GOB Says:

Wilfork, and Logan Mankins are the chief examples

  22. T REX Says:

    5-12 after Brady is gone.

    I’ll take on all wagers

Licht is trash. BRady saved his career

WHat is Licht’s winning % without Brady?

Hint: It’s one of the worst in Bus history…do you know how hard that is…Brady covers up a lot of trash.

  23. MadMax Says:

^ the idiots among us….like theres not enough already….they gotta contribute too LOL

  24. Goatfarmer Says:

T-Rex keeps getting gored by Triceratops. More like a hazlenut sized brain.

  25. T REX Says:

    LOL…love the personal attacks.

It just means you can’t handle the truth HA

  26. MadMax Says:

Uh, yeah….the truth of whatever lala land youre living in, but actually i can handle that….like i said, idiots everywhere, im used to it.
