Should The Bucs Go All-In For Robert Quinn

June 1st, 2022

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

Yes, it appears that a durable edge rusher coming off an 18 1/2-sack season is on the market.

That’s Robert Quinn, the Pro Bowl edge rusher who has missed just five games over the past five seasons and appears on the cusp of being a casualty under the rebuilding Bears regime.

How wild would Quinn look across from Shaq Barrett with 700 pounds of manmeat in between them  — defensive tackles Vita Vea and newly aquired Akiem Hicks?

Quinn, 32, is set to earn just under $13 million this season, a bargain for his production. But he has skipped Bears OTAs this spring and there’s a ton of speculation in Chicago (Joe listened to a lot of Chicago sports radio this morning) that both sides would be fine moving on.

Longtime Bears beat writer Brad Biggs dove into the situation on 670 AM in Chicago and believes the Bears are quietly sniffing league interest and are willing to deal Quinn like they did Khalil Mack to the Chargers.

Yeah, the Bucs have salary cap issues, but the Bucs also have fat contracts they can restructure to make room, like those of Donovan Smith and Barrett.

A guy like Quinn, whose 101 career sacks rank him among all-time greats, does not come available every day at a reasonable price.

Mabye the Bears would take, say, Robert Hainsey and a third-round pick for Quinn, and perhaps even eat a little of his salary.

If the Bucs are all-in for what could be Tom Brady’s final season, Quinn should at least be a subject of discussion at One Buc Palace.

    Wasn’t shaq’s contract already restructured?

  4. sasquatch Says:

The year before, he had 2 sacks, starting 13 games. Which player are you getting? At his age it could go either way. I certainly wouldn’t be looking to trade away any part of the future to bring him on. If he’s released, sure, bring him on for a low base and incentive-rich contract. If he performs, everybody wins. If not, the team hasn’t phukked itself over for a 1 year dud.

  5. PassingThru Says:

I’d love Quinn, but I doubt he’s available at a trade price that Licht would find reasonable.

I strongly suspect that this is it for Brady. I’d love “all in,” but that isn’t my expectation.

We all wish it but will it happen? Doubtful.

I wonder if there still thinking about bringing back JPP on a prove it- team friendly type of deal. We don’t have 13 million and I’d really hate to give someone up for Quinn. If JPP’s rotator cuff is healed, he’s as good as anyone if not better. But bringing in someone else does stunt JTS’s development.

  10. ClwJB Says:

Quinn is a 4-3 DE and not sure that translates to our D scheme

He is obviously a pass rush specialist that can be schemed to in those situations but you don’t restructure for a 15 play a game role IMO

  11. sasquatch Says:

“All in” doesn’t mean making stupid trades and mortgaging the future for dubious return. The guy has been super productive at times, and other times, not so much. If you do a trade, you’re an idiot if you give away a 3rd rounder and pick up a giant ass contract with that kind of risk.

Licht and his scouts have probably looked at the tape and assessed his value. Pretty sure it’s not Hainsey + 3rd rounder + gigantic contract they don’t have room for.

  12. Tim Says:

    700 lbs of manmeat lol

  13. MadMax Says:

  19. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

Personally, I want the Bucs to be competitive EVERY year. I trust our GM and his team to strike the right balance. I’m sure they have a plan to compete for the Lombardi Trophy in the future as well, even after the GOAT departs.

@sasquatch, you are the voice of reason! I 100% agree with all you wrote.

  20. David Says:

If they could swing it financially without causing too much damage in the future, go for it. Instead of waiting for him to be cut maybe offer a fourth rounder, or even a third if the Bears could eat a couple million.

  21. Leighroy Says:

Face the music, the 2021 first round pick and 2022 second round pick are going to have to play roles in the DL worthy of their draft positions this year.

  22. PassingThru Says:

I’d prefer Trey Flowers on a cheap contract, plus maybe a quality CB via trade if the price is right.

  23. HC Grover Says:

    For sure.

  24. D-Rok Says:

Gotta love hypotheticals. I wonder if Ultraman would allow Godzilla to be traded. That would be a lot run-stuffing meat in the middle. And hey, next time Kupp catches a 50-yard bomb on us, Gozilla’s laser eyes will just drop him in his tracks. Godzilla can defend all 100 yards simultaneously. Sign him.

  25. D-Rok Says:

And don’t nobody give me any crap about Godzilla’s T-Rex arms. He would be the best DT in history. Who cares about tiny arms when you weigh 37,000 pounds with laser eyes and icy breath?

  26. Maniac Buc Says:

Please no. Let JTS play. You don’t draft people to keep replacing them. Quinn would be cool, but we don’t need him.

  27. steele Says:

They should absolutely sign another top veteran edge, whether through FA or trade. Yes, look into Quinn, but the rest of the NFL will also be lined up for him.
Carlos Dunlap or Justin Houston would be fine. And they should grab a top veteran DT to replace Suh.

If they can accomplish these moves, it takes pressure off of development guys like Logan Hall, who needs time, and JTS, who also needs work.

  28. Cobraboy Says:

WTH is going on with the Bears?

  29. Goatfarmer Says:

Suh. No trade required. This is stupid.

  30. Ash Says:

Nope the bucs shouldn’t, sasquatch nailed it.

  31. sasquatch Says:

@Goatfarmer… Suh and Quinn are different players, different positions. Suh is an interior guy. Quinn is an edge guy, would be an OLB in our scheme, if we were interested. We moved on from Suh when we signed Hicks.

I still find it mind boggling how many people don’t understand the difference between edge and interior players in a 3-4. We’ve been in this scheme for 3 friggin’ years!

  32. Delusional Intelligence Says:

Love the thought, maybe if it was a 1 year contract, but 2 additional years at 14 & 13 Million. Not worth it, unless we are looking at Double digit sacks at 34 years old.

  33. Goatfarmer Says:

Gee thanks quatch. (roll eye. bang head with hammer)

I’m talking about the money. It’s mind boggling that you wouldn’t understand investment in a player vs the cap. The Bucs have pennies left. Give me Suh, who is durable, smart, a proven great leader, knows Bowles’ Calculus 4 defense, and can explain it to others who are merely trigonometry majors. You’ve got edge covered mightily now and in addition, Cam Gill can rush the passer also. Dude has been sneaking up on the world.

I want to be sure our middle is stout given Vea’s fragility and apparent lack of conditioning which pisses me off. We have Hicks now. Gronky is now more important than a has been like Quinn for the money.

Mind boggling indeed. Fortunately Jason calls the shots and not your yeti hairiness.

  34. Stanglassman Says:

Sasquatch. I wouldn’t qualify Hainsey and a 3rd round pick as mortgaging the future.
I believe the Bucs will sign a vet OLB/DE before the season starts. I’m not optimistic that Tom’s going to be here past this season. I’m also not a huge fan of sacrificing everything for one year. I rather get a young guy who they like in a recent draft that’s a final cut on a deep OLB team than trying to cobble together a all star team for one year. Unfortunately the ‘20 Bucs and ‘21 Rams showed that it can win you a SB.

  35. Stanglassman Says:

Suh didn’t get resigned because he became a liability. Teams figured out that he no longer had the lateral quickness anymore. They were running stretch play and screen passes successfully over and over. I get the love for Suh but he was no longer a 9 million a year guy (according to the Bucs)and doesn’t seem to believe it. Maybe the market will prove him right. There’s been reporting on this. The Bucs aren’t going to come out and say it to the public but it’s been discussed.

  36. Buczilla Says:

This dude would would make even our mostly sorry corners look good. Do it!

The pass Rush stepped up in the post season and the Bucs made their Super Bowl run. They looked totally different last year without a consistent pass rush. Move the pieces around and sign Quinn.

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  39. AbucAway Says:

Scheme or no scheme a double-digit sack guy should have a spot to be successful on this time. No reason to look to the future here. There is no tomorrow for this franchise when TB12 hangs it up. No need to set ourselves up for failure with built in future excuses as to why this franchise struggles when Brady is gone. Focus on this season, and deal with the future when it comes.
