Find A Way To Practice Tackling In Underwear Football

June 6th, 2022

Tackling by corners must greatly improve.

Right now Joe is in a good mood so Joe won’t call out Bucs cornerbacks by name. However, Joe is dwelling on the idea that lousy tackling by corners last year against the Rams cost the Bucs a chance at a return Super Bowl trip.

And it wasn’t just in the Rams’ game that the Bucs cornerbacks shat the bed when it came to tackling.

Joe watched the December Bills-Bucs game rebroadcast on NFL Network Saturday afternoon.

(No, Joe has yet to see a gator while living in Florida for decades but by gosh if the Bucs are on the NFL Network on an otherwise sunny, pleasant June afternoon, Joe’s parked on his couch. Joe’s not missing that! You are correct in guessing that Joe rarely leaves his kingdom. Why, when there is football to watch? Whether it be the USFL or top games from 2021 on the NFL Network?)

As we all know, the Bucs won a thriller in overtime against the Bills when Tom Brady hooked up with Breshad Perriman for a game-winning 58-yard touchdown pass. But it should not have come down to a play for the ages from Perriman.

On the Bills’ final drive of regulation, the Bucs had the Bills stopped on fourth down at midfield if a starting Bucs corner had made a tackle. (Joe is in a good mood and won’t name the guy.)

Gabriel Davis was stopped and was wrapped up two yards behind the chains on fourth down when Davis broke free of the bear hug and got a first down, keeping the drive alive. Buffalo would kick a field goal to tie the game at 27-27 to send it into overtime.

Little stuff like that could keep the Bucs from returning to the Super Bowl.

Now with a defensive guy as a head coach, Joe sure hopes Todd Bowles can devise a way this week in the final days of underwear football season to help the corners learn to tackle. Mandatory mincamp starts tomorrow.

No, players cannot hit during underwear football. But they can sure work on tackling dummies. Practice wrapping up and fundamental leverage techniques this week, please.

There are mobile tackling dummies. Why not use these for practice ???
Beats tacking teammates, yet fosters good techniques

    Wiffed tackles and dropped passes.

Wish there were some statistics available for ‘Tackling Opportunities’ both Total, Made and Missed. Have a hunch that the Bucs’ Secondary had more ‘Tackling Opportunities’ than probably any Secondary in the NFL, since opponents passed against us so much. And IF that’s the case, Bucs leading the league in Tackling Opportunities Missed wouldn’t surprise me (the more chances you have to screw up, the more likely it becomes that you will screw up).

I’d suggest practicing on some greased pigs, but then we’d have PETA on our a$$.

    Overblown issue

The reason why nobody has developed a practice robot is that they fear the NFL would outlaw them.

It’s time to get Ronde Barber involved with the defensive backfield. He was pound for pound the best tackler I’ve ever seen.

  8. Brandon Says:

In case you haven’t been around, our top three CBs are among the better tackling CBs in the NFL. No, they don’t make every play, but they are able and willing. The other guys get paid too.

There are actually self-propelled tackling dummies that “run.” Joe’s seen them. Not sure if the NFL has rules in proper usage of them in underwear football or not.

Tackling dummies, no matter how advanced cant simulate the real thing. Maybe Elon musk will develop a star wars like imperial probe droid. Two, count em, two padded practices per week for the first eleven weeks, then none!! I haven’t looked at the data, but I’d bet money a correlation exists. Even great tackling teams like the Patriots have suffered because of the CBA rules. Like anything, if it isn’t practiced, the skill will erode.

They need to get Ronde down there to teach these guys the proper “T” technique.

I’m not gon beat around the bush. SMB is garbage at tackling n it was embarrassing to consider him an nfl player after the missed tackles in rams playoff. He did the same in bills game. #29 is awful also. We need thumpers at corner n other than CD, I’m not impressed with any of the other corners from from last year’s roster, including JDean who still plays passive n timid.

  13. Alvafan Says:

SMB was trying to play after seriously dislocating his elbow give him a break. If he’s still gun shy this year than they should trade him while he still has some value.
