Bad Backup Grade For Blaine Gabbert

June 29th, 2022

Joe is naming names here, courtesy of a renowned talent evaluator.

Teddy Bridgewater, Andy Dalton, Jimmy Garropolo, Nick Foles, Tyrod Taylor, Case Keenum, Joe Flacco and Colt McCoy are the top tier of NFL backup quarterbacks, per former Jets executive and linebackers coach Pat Kirwan, the Xs and Os guru for SiriusXM NFL Radio.

The next tier of dudes you might want to rely on to bring home a Super Bowl if your starting QB went down? Per Kirwan, it starts with Gardner Minshew and moves to Taylor Heinicke, Drew Lock, Chad Henne, Mason Rudolph, Jacoby Brissett and Brian Hoyer.

“I think we know where [the rankings are] headed; the list is not going to a very good place,” Kirwan said.

Wherever it’s going, Bucs backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert is a resident, along with Kyle Trask.

Is Kirwan being fair to Gabbert? Probably. However, Todd Bowles did tell the Ira Kaufman Podcast all about his confidence in Gabbert. And Joe remembers how much love Bucco Bruce Arians had for Gabbert.

Without Rob Gronkowski, the Bucs have plenty of cap flexibility to massage talented but unawanted quarterback Baker Mayfield out of Cleveland, which might be a good idea if the Browns are willing to eat most of his salary in a trade. It is still an all-in season for the Bucs, and Mayfield would be an true upgrade.

Calm down. The Bucs trading for Mayfield is as likely as Joe giving up Big Storm Beer,

Baker Minefield is Johnny Manziel without the fun parts. Minefield should go to Canada.

  2. steele Says:

In addition to it not mattering, “renowned” Pat Kirwan has been wrong on a routine basis.

  3. BucsfanFred Says:

If these guys really stink that bad, Mayfield might b a worthwhile bet.

  4. BucsfanFred Says:

I’m surprised they remember how to throw a football as little as they’ve played.

  5. Buczilla Says:

Baker would be an upgrade, but Trask is totally unproven and Gabbert is dreadful. Baker reminds me of a younger Andy Dalton, whom I guess would be considered an above average starter? Baker seems to get a lot of hate thrown his way too, so I wouldn’t be giving up premium picks for this dude.

  6. Onetrickpony Says:

I’d go Baker over Gabbert any day

baker commercials maintaining ray jay, him watering the grass, adjusting the goalposts and tweaking the cannons on the ship is all i’d want to see of him…

  8. Beeej Says:

Bring in a disgruntled starter and relegate him to the bench, without ever giving him enough practice snaps to learn the overly-complicated offense. You thought AB was cancer

  9. Jonny Says:

Gabbert is indeed dreadful. Whether it be preseason or regular season in relief, it is so rare to see Gabbert piece together a string of completions ever. He has always looked like the bust in Jacksonville no matter how many years have gone by.

  10. BucsfanFred Says:

Baker played pretty good in browntown.

  11. Beeej Says:

He’s only ever played on mop up duty here, but good stats on that role have been very good

Gabbert is a proven disaster. Trask has never been a disaster. In fact, he has always proven to be the solution. He has always proven he could play football at the level needed. Gabbert has experience at losing. Trask has experience at winning, just not at this level. I don’t need to see what Gabbert can do. I have the evidence. I do need to see what Trask can do with this offense. I believe he can at the very least win the division. This offense is not chopped liver.

Anyone who can take team brown to a playoff win is workin’ hard. He’s worth a deuce!

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Considering we are getting Gabbert for the price of a tank of gas…..we’re OK…..and, I wouldn’t spend our money on a backup QB……let’s bring in another TE & an edge rusher.

  15. BucsfanFred Says:

    Prob a good idea^↑^^^^

  16. Captain Oblivious Says:

With Watson about to get suspended aren’t the Browns going to keep Mayfield for at least one more year?

  17. Craig Says:

With any luck Trask will blow up the internet this preseason and we won’t have to worry about it.

The best thing to say about Gabbert, so far, is that didn’t always have a turnover in cleanup duty last season. That is being nice.

  18. Anonymous Says:

Blaine Gabbert’s best NFL contribution, by far, was taking the starting QB job away from Colin Kaepernick

  19. BucBoy Says:

Colt McCoy? He has a career TD:INT ratio of 33:29. LMAO.

  20. View from 132 Says:

Former Jets executive – sort of like asking the Orioles about winning games in the 2000s.

  21. Wild Bill Says:

Hard to have confidence in Gabbert if Brady goes down. He sure has not looked very good the few times he has played. No Brady = no chance for Super Bowl. Hard to judge Trask now until gets some game time experience. Bucs have to give him some significant game time this preseason. At least a full half each game and not only with the scrubs.
