Vikings Safety Says Bucs Misled Him

May 11th, 2022

Accusation thrown at Bucs GM Jason Licht and his staff.

Every NFL draft has drama tied to each team’s picks and the guys the team could have drafted instead.

For the 2022 Tampa Bay draft, a fresh twist has emerged.

Vikings rookie safety Lewis Cine, the No. 32 overall pick in the draft, was ranting this week on The Richard Sherman Podcast about how the Bucs misled him into believing he absolutely would have been their draft pick at No. 27 overall.

Of course, when the No. 27 pick came to Tampa Bay, general manager Jason Licht traded down with Jacksonville and out of Round 1.

“I had a team at No. 27, they know who they are. I ain’t gotta say no names. It was at 27,” Cine began. “The whole process, [the team said,] ‘We’re gonna pick you.’ They move down to the second round, the first pick of the second round. I’m like ‘Damn, they just did me so dirty.’ And then at this point I’m like, ‘Alright, you know what, if I don’t go today (in Round 1), it is what it is.’ I go lay down. I’m like, ‘Alright, let me just chill, you know.’ Then I received the call and I was like, ‘Thank God I just got picked.”

Joe likes the candid story from Cine, who is a bone-crushing speedster safety out of the University of Georgia. But Joe thinks Cine needs to get over it.

Assuming Cine had an agent (and why wouldn’t he?), surely he was advised not to believe what team officials tell him during the draft process.

Also, the Bucs likely told Cine he was their top guy and they would draft him with their pick. Well, the Bucs didn’t pick at No. 27 and, subsequently, drafted at a position where Cine already was gone. Where’s the lie there?

Joe wonders if the Bucs told Ndamukong Suh their preference was to draft Cine and they would get back to him after the draft if they didn’t pick a defensive tackle?

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

That’s just the way it goes…..bet there are 100 stories somewhat like this…….you got picked…..STFU……now I’m glad we didn’t pick this diva….

  3. Dooley Says:

LOL, enjoy that lake effect snow & bundle up.

  4. Quiet Chaos Says:

Maybe they intended on taking him, then the Jags offer was more appealing. Big whoop.

Remember to pack your Long Johns Lewis !! Enjoy!!!

  6. SufferingSince76 Says:

The Bucs did him dirty? Dude needs to gain a little perspective on life or his shorts will be quickly eaten.

  7. Pewter941 Says:

I was upset when he went to the Vikings.

‘Joe wonders if the Bucs told Ndamukong Suh their preference was to draft Cine and would get back to him after the draft if they didn’t pick a defensive tackle?’

No problem Joe, Bucs didn’t pick a defensive tackle. Go the Bucs’ website; they had been listing Hall as a DE, but now they list all Dlinemen as DLs. He’ll be playing all over the place this year; no need to pigeon-hole him.

And yes, Suh will return. Bucs will pay because they know they need him to compete for the SB this year, and Suh knows this is his final stop.

  9. Dewey Selmon Says:

    Dude probably sucks at poker…

  10. PassingThru Says:

Licht, you did him dirty. A GM misleading a draftee and his agent? Unheard of.

    (insert eye-roll emoticon here)

  11. Aceofaerospace Says:

“Done him dirty”? What a baby. I’m sure he was running his mouth to his friends about how he was going to be a Buc and then looked like a chump when they traded back. Had they traded back and still didn’t draft him, then I’d feel lied to. That didn’t happen. Get over it.

  12. glen k mattingly Says:

Sounds like another crybaby that just believes he didn’t get what he thought he should. Remind you of anyone?

  13. PassingThru Says:

It reminds me of the late Don Nelson, who used to coach the Dallas Mavericks. One day he drove a draft prospect back to the airport and explained to him, “Don’t believe a thing you hear from the GMs. Everybody lies in this business. In fact, I’m probably lying to you right now.”

  14. geno711 Says:

I liked hearing Richard Sherman’s advice to the young player.

He was clear that as a DB that you have to shut out the noise and not listen to social media about a play the fans think you missed. He was clear that you cannot lose confidence. He also said that the playbook is important but like so many before him said that watching the game tapes each week is really how you are going to win matchups against the other super talented guys around the league.

  15. SlyPirate Says:

    TOTAL MISDIRECTION

Cine got played. The Bucs told Cine they’d take him so he and his agent would tell everyone else. The Vikings picked Cine because they thought the Bucs would on the next pick, ensuring Hall fell to them.

  16. Alvafan Says:

Maybe they thought he’d be around at 33

  17. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

He needs to STFU. He should have asked Kenny Pickett if he could borrow his hot looking Girlfriend Amy Paternoster to give dirty looks every time a team passed on him.

  18. August 1976 Buc Says:

Cine needs a reality check. The millions of people in many different countries that make much less money than him on rookie contract. Some people where I live make 3-4 dollars a day, yes I said 3-4 dollars a day in 2022. 10 dollars a day is considered excellent. Maybe be thankful Mr Cine, that you were picked and given an opportunity that multitudes of people across the earth will never get.
Thankfulness is just an honest way being, when you are given an opportunity like playing in the NFL.

    REALITY CHECK

  19. BigMacAttack Says:

Character issues as he just demonstrated are likely why he wasn’t the Bucs’ pick. He will probably get in trouble several times in his first 2 years 😂

  20. Bucaroo Says:

A lot of mock drafts by so-called “insiders” picked Cine to go to the Bucs. The ruse worked. It works every time!

  21. Steven007 Says:

Totally agree with Joe’s second to last paragraph. They ended up not being the team at 27 so they didn’t quote unquote do him dirty. I wouldn’t be surprised if the story repeats itself multiple times with each draft. Kind of an non issue.

  22. Mike Says:

Bucs draft board fell their way and they were able to get extra picks. You take that any day if you can get it.

  23. SOEbuc Says:

    PassingThru

Did him dirty. Anything associated with the National Football League misled him? Unheard of.

  24. Aaron Says:

They are getting like Shady brady lol but he won’t be there to long

  25. Cobraboy Says:

With that “I’m Important, How Dare They” attutude I am thankful the Bucs didn’t pick him.

  26. ocala Says:

I thought he would be a good pick for the Bucs, but now I am glad the Bucs didn’t get him.

  27. Natural Selection Says:

Context matters. That was a long quote, and it’s still not 10% of the total. Lewis was on Richard Sherman’s podcast. Who asked him about his draft while talking about how people don’t understand how stressful it is. Lewis agreed with Sherm about the stress. Going into a multiple minute explanation of his process/draft and feeling like he was falling. He didn’t expect to be there at 27. So the part about the Bucs was another example of his stress elevating as he thought he might “fall” out of round 1 entirely. He also mentioned earlier in the quote how multiple teams were telling him how much they loved him and then passed. I was hoping Cine was indicating disappointment over not being a Buc. He was really just opening up with an in depth answer to the specific question he was asked. Sounded a bit salty at the process in general and his higher expectations. I’m ok with a guy thinking he should have gone higher. Good luck to him. Wouldn’t have hated taking him at 33, but still would have rather had 53 and 59.

  28. Aaron Says:

Just like they wanted booth jr believe his name is went to the Vikings out of Clemson #23 but they passed on him Shady why talk bout these 1s if really not interested in them like said Shady but they made it all that matters

  29. Mybucsdontbucaround813 Says:

In our prestige program we have only selected 4 defensive backs all-time. And our current Gm Mr ” I’ll leave the Licht on for you” only selected one DB in the 1st rd (Vernon Hargreaves) and I think he learned his lesson fairly quick after seeing what a loafer VH3 is.

  30. SB~LV Says:

    rookie tears

  31. Pewter Power Says:

Salty and petty, didn’t care about going to the Bucs at all he just cared about going in the first round so sounds like we dodged a bullet

  32. Your Mom Says:

Yeah how is that “dirty”… what a snowflake!

  33. RandsABucFan Says:

It seems even newly drafted rookies have a sense of entitlement. I’m actually glad that we didn’t draft him. This only gives the appearance that he’s going to be difficult to deal with at some point in the future and now luckily the Bucs aren’t strapped with his attitude going forward.

  34. Realistic Says:

I see a lot of TB fans getting their panties in a bunch. You sound like grade A haters. Give the kid a break. Trust me he’s not salty to be a first round pick. Couch QB’s are the worst. Also you guys didn’t even exist in the internet until Brady became a Buc.

  35. K2 Says:

I don’t see a problem. The team made a strategic decision to trade back. It’s not like the Bucs pass on him. He was off the board when the Bucs selected at 33.

  36. Paul Griggs Says:

I hope this is not how he’s going to act as a Viking. Get over it and play the game. There’s no need to stir up animosity. The draft is a fluid beast and team’s thoughts can change with every pick.

  37. Thadeus Says:

The NFLL is a business. There are NO “promises”. Only “maybes”.

  38. TampabayDJ82 Says:

He’s just mad cuz he knows the Bucs have a great shot at the Super Bowl ! Nobody wants to live in Minnesota either lmao. We don’t NEED a safety , we NEEDED to get younger in the trenches. And we did. Go Bucs and go Joe

  39. Buczilla Says:

Oh no, another entitled brat confused by and done wrong by the idiot parents that think that every kid should get a trophy. Welcome to the real world dude. I’d rather have Logan Hall anyway.

  40. bojim Says:

    Awww. That’s a bummer.

  41. Brandon Says:

Considering Mike Edwards was our best safety last year and Cine won’t likely be as good as Edwards, this is a W for the team. Cine plays a similar style to Whitehead… though I doubt he’s as tough.. but Edwards is clearly better in pass coverage than Winfield, Whitehead, and Cine. Having Edwards in the lineup only makes us better.

  42. BigCrew19 Says:

If he thinks this is dirty, then he is gonna have a very tough time in the NFL. The paradise for sheisters

  43. Allbuccedup Says:

Bucs did not pick a safety thru the whole draft. Why would they tell him hes their guy with the first pick. Maybe he was talking to Booger Mcfarland and thought he was a Bucs coach.

  44. Drunkinybor Says:

What a cry baby 👶 Thank God we passed his soft behind up!

  45. Pickgrin Says:

Going DLine vs Safety with the 1st pick was almost a no brainer from a “need” standpoint.

Glad we didn’t take this guy – especially now that he’s shown himself as a whiner…..

  46. MadMax Says:

Oh well, welcome to life kid! Nothing is ever set in stone, EVER! Well, except taxes and death.

But seriously, the trade offer was too good to pass up when we’re good at safety…..and not so good at DT. Minds change sometimes….just get over it.

  47. Buc1987 Says:

    Seriously?

  48. Red-sparrow Says:

Salty ass Bucs fans. The kid seems over it, so y’all need to get over it including the Joes. Jason Licht has been awful the past 2 drafts and yet y’all continue to blindly trust this guy. Logan hall will make zero impact on the Bucs winning a championship, zero. Just like Trask and darden and the rest of lichts awful draft picks over the last 2 years. When Brady leaves, this team will return to the dumpster fire that it’s always been. Y’all have become way too full of yourselves because of the past 2 years. Lousy ass fanbase.

  49. Ash Says:

Honestly I would have prefered that the bucs picked cine at 27

  50. Crickett Baker Says:

He had off-the-field issues and this rant only proves he is not the kind of player the Bucs need–talent or not.

  51. adam from ny Says:

    dat foo 🙂

  52. BUCman Says:

Don’t know who’s the biggest baby. Cine or Desmond Ridder when he took the phone call from the Falcons after falling to round three. Both have shown their immaturity when faced with adversity. Glad we didn’t draft either.

  53. Tony Says:

He had his popcorn ready & everything. I’m sure he was hoping he was gonna go to Dallas.😀

  54. fern Says:

no one likes a crybaby for a team mate

  55. steele Says:

Mountain, meet molehill. Drama prince. There are hundreds of these situations that no one hears about. So they traded back, and he was gone. So what.

That said, purely as a player, Cine would have been a fine pick.

  56. steele Says:

On the other hand, the modern athlete, including a certain GOAT #12, looks for chippy motivation. Watch out when Bucs play Vikings.

  57. Anonymous Says:

G.M Tom Brady, decided to go in a different direction, just do not lie to people.

  58. Doc Says:

G.M Tom Brady, decided to go in a different direction, just do not lie to people.

  59. ThaiBuc Says:

Hope Brady looks him off on a deep ball TD to Scotty Miller🙂
