Respected NFL Analyst Loves Logan Hall’s “Fit” With Bucs

May 9th, 2022

Bucs rookie defensive lineman Logan Hall.

Joe understands some Bucs fans are outraged by the team passing on drafting this defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt from Georgia and trading back for Logan Hall of Houston.

NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell, one of the smartest X’s and O’s guys working in the Fourth Estate, absolutely loves the Bucs drafting Hall. Typing for The 33rd Team, Cosell said Hall to the Bucs is one of his top-five fits from the draft.

All things even, Cosell said he would rather have Hall than Wyatt.

“I may be in the minority, but again this is just for me it’s just tape study,” Cosell said. “I thought that he was the best 3-technique defensive line prospect in this draft. I know Devonte Wyatt went to the Packers four or five picks earlier late in the first round. I really liked Logan Hall’s tape a lot.”

The versatility factor Cosell thought was huge because coach Todd Bowles likes to get creative with the defensive front.

“I think 3-technique would be his base position,” Cosell added. “But there’s versatility there. And we know what Todd Bowles does with his defensive line. We’ve seen him lineup Vita Vea as a wide-9. We’ve seen him stand up Ndamukong Suh.”

In terms of Hall’s overall athletic profile, Cosell said “[He] is a very athletic guy who’s both powerful and explosive off the ball. He showed burst and explosiveness both laterally and vertically.”

In short, Cosell said, there really isn’t much not to like about Hall’s tape.

“He’s a good pass rusher,” Cosell said. “He’s a good run defender … I think he’s a really, really good prospect. And I just thought, to me, he was the best if you’re looking for a three technique, which as I said is what I think he’s going to start at when you start your OTAs and your rookie mini camps. I thought he was the best one in this draft.”

As far as those stomping their feet for Wyatt, hasn’t Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht built enough street cred the past few years to get the benefit of the doubt? One could argue Wyatt should have been a good player with all the studs surrounding him.

How many guys playing on the same line at Houston or behind Hall were drafted during the first two days of the draft? Hall was pretty much a one-man gang, no?

The only issue Joe has with Hall is the Bucs are putting a whole lot of pressure on two young guys, Hall and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, to produce like veterans, if the Bucs have decided to move on from Ndamukong Suh and Jason Pierre-Paul,

“…the Bucs are putting a whole lot of pressure on two young guys, Hall and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, to produce like veterans, if the Bucs have decided to move on from Ndamukong Suh…”

Amen. Scares the heck out of me

  2. Cleanhouse Says:

Dear front office and coaching staff- if you don’t want to suck this year find a way to sign Suh and hopefully JPP as well

  3. Sarasota Garey Says:

I just bought a truck at Bill Currie Ford yesterday, I made sure to ask for my Joebucsfan discount. I asked for Sean, they said he wasnt there though.

  4. SufferingSince76 Says:

Still holding out hope that Suh comes back. JPP, too. Come on, guys. One more time.

  5. sasquatch Says:

A couple important measurements stand out for Hall vs. Wyatt
    – Couple inches taller
    – Faster through the 3 cone and shuttle
    – Better sack production in college
    – Doesn’t have domestic violence charge

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You just can’t simply look at Hall in a vacuum…….When you mention Hall, you have to mention Otton….because the Hall pick brought Otton with him……

When you look at him like that, he looks like a better pick for sure.

  7. Exkwood Says:

For the love of God sign Sheldon Richardson and you now have a Top 5 D line .
The Guy just makes quiet plays and tackles but because his name isn’t McCoy , Suh or Donald you get him at a bargain ……. Compare his ten year stat line to the others …….. No I’m not saying he is as good as Donald but the other two Yes

  8. #8 Says:

    The cougar shocker.
I see what you did Joe.

  9. The VanBurenBoys Says:

The Van Buren Boys agrees with the Joe’s. Of course Wyatt looked great – look at all of the studs on that Georgia D. Hall also looked great – Houston defensive studs…not a one outside of Hall. Good choice JL!

  10. Admiral Redbeard Says:

Anyone who thinks Hall is going to replace Suh (who gets double teamed on almost every play) is out of there mind. I do think, if he bulks up a little, Hall can be a nice piece to the DL. Imho though, I feel like Licht messed up big time passing on Travis Jones (DL from Uconn). That kid is going to be a beast, and could have rotated with all 3 DL’s, or even replace Suh if he doesn’t come back.

  11. tampabuscsbro Says:

Also Sasquatch Wyatt put up alright numbers on an all time great defense. So he was probably more of a product of the defense around him.

  12. Admiral Redbeard Says:

    Cleanhouse, 100% correct sir!!!

  13. tampabuscsbro Says:

JPP is probably cooked. Suh could be not sure. There isn’t enough money to go around.

  14. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Ask yourself ” Why did the Jags so desperately move up to 27?”. Because the best LB in the draft was there in Devin Lloyd. Lloyd had 7 sacks from the LB position and was second in the nation with 22 TFL and Lloyd had 4 interceptions . Lloyds tape screams impact player on Day 1 and perennial starter. LVD is getting a bit long in the tooth and having his eventual replacement starting next to him would have created a marked increase in splash plays resulting in turnovers. You cannot pass on such a player for a guy like Hall that will be fortunate to play on 40% of the snaps.

  15. Tim Says:

Tim thinks the various people on this site that speak of themselves in the third person (Joe’s, Howard Cowell, and this guy above) are annoying. How many people are gonna suck on your schtick Joe?

  16. PSL Bob Says:

Good point about Wyatt playing in a system full of top round draftees. It sure opens up opportunities when other players on the D are being double teamed. Not that Wyatt isn’t good, but would he be as good if he was surrounded by “average” players. Probably not. I’m anxious to see what Hall can do unter Todd Bowles’ tutelage. Can’t believe I’m actually excited about training camp.

  17. WiscoJoe Says:

I was praying Licht was going to double dip and get Travis Jones as well. Talk about the potential and getting younger if he did!

  18. Fansince76 Says:

Thanks for the post Joe, i hope Hall turns out to be great!
I like Jason Licht’s other 2nd rounder, his 3rd round pick and
the 7th rounder as better selections and should be excellent picks.

  19. Joe Says:

Tim thinks the various people on this site that speak of themselves in the third person (Joe’s, Howard Cowell, and this guy above) are annoying. How many people are gonna suck on your schtick Joe?

See the Twitter post above. Joes been doing this for 13 years and nine months. Seems to work. Joe doesn’t believe in fixing something not broken.

  20. Tim Says:

Oh I know Joe. I’ve been checking this site out since you were a regular on the Big Dog’s show (RIP). It’s just the copycats I take exception with.

  21. Kgh4life Says:

I really liked Wyatt, however, it was clear the Bucs wanted a prototypical DT for the 3-4, i hope the kid pans out.

  22. Trey Long Says:

Coaching secondary is a huge problem.
Last year was bottom 3rd. Can’t win championships with that

  23. Natural Selection Says:

Showing my ignorance here, but how often do we line up with a 3 technique in base sets? Cosell likes the “fit” because Hall is his top natural 3, so maybe we play a lot more of it than I realize. I thought we utilized that primarily on passing downs as part of our rush packages. My concern is that Hall doesn’t project as an early down 3-4 DE. That he would/will be a sub package player more than truly rotational. I’d love to see a breakdown of how often we line up with a 3 technique on 1st and 2nd downs.

  24. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Wyatt and Hall are both gonna be good players, but Wyatt was a good player on a great team. Hall was a good player on an average team.
I could have been happy with either pick, but think Jason Licht did it right by trading down and getting us more picks.

  25. Sarasota Garey Says:

Hall is 2 years younger than Wyatt also.

  26. Buczilla Says:

Licht has proven himself. I’m just being a spoiled brat and wanted a corner. Hopefully Hall and Otton work out and our corner’s sterling reputations for avoiding injuries holds true this year as well.. .

  27. Hodad Says:

Of all the NFL analyst’s out there Cosell is the guy who’s opinion I respect the most. True story, fifty years ago when I was only seventeen, I had the pleasure of meeting his father the late great Howard Cosell, along with Dandy Don Meredith, and Frank Gifford backstage of a late night talk show.

  28. gotbbucs Says:

Well that’s good news. Yesterday Hall was predicted by Charles Davis to be injured for most of the year because his college teammate had that happen to him last year with the Saints. Wow, what a relief. Hall was the right choice over Wyatt.

Suh played 63% of the defensive snaps last year. He’s 35 years old. The decline started last year. He’s not worth anything close to what he’s probably asking for right now.
JPP is 33 years old and his body is broken down.

At what point can we move on? Thank them for their service, now it’s time for other guys to get in there.

  29. geno711 Says:

More and more we are seeing 3-4 and multiple front defenses find a way to get talented interior rushers at the 3-technique.

Calais Campbell was drafted as a DE in the 3-4, a 5-technique.

But in 2014, the Cardinals defined him more as a 3-tech lineman. He took over 1/2 of his snaps that year as a 3-tech (from a pro football focus article by Mike Renner).

Guess who was the 1st year defensive coordinator for Arizona in 2014? Todd Bowles.

Ever since that year, Campbell has spent more snaps in the 3-tech position than any other in his career.

Hall rings in at 6-foot-6 and 282 pounds and played as mainly a three-technique for Houston. Even though his frame seems ideal as an edge defender for some, he still got the job done against the run on the interior and earned a high run-defense grade this past season.

Will Hall be as effective as Suh against the Run? I doubt it.
Can he be more effective than Suh at the 3-tech position with his pass rush ability? I believe so.

  30. Jamie Says:

Makes you wonder how the Bucs DL board was set re Hall and Wyatt. One of the knocks (if you can call this a knock) is his age. Wyatt is already 24. Hall just turned 22. Thinking long term you much rather sign a guy to a second contract that’s 26 and not 29.

Two years younger… which is even more impressive. Wyatt is 24… a grown man playing against 20-21 year olds. Over aged DL never seem to transition well to the NFL… Gaines Adams, Peria Jerry, Danny Watkins, etc.

    ^^^^^^^^
The Bucs already gave #90 to Hall. What does that tell you about JPP?

The Bucs won’t “suck” this year unless Brady is injured or starts showing his age. I want Suh back as much as you, but he could be replaced.

  33. Bucsfan4ever Says:

I’d be ok with Suh’s return, but someone younger would be better.
I think Joe talks in the third person because there’s two of them, but they write as though they were one character.
Occasionally, when their views diverge they’ll refer to themselves as this Joe any the other Joe. It’s hard for me to tell them apart.

  34. Buc4evr Says:

Hall will get owned inside. The Bucs better stop with all the fiction about this guy and sign Suh and JPP. Hall may be a good player in a few years, but when you have Brady in his last year, you better sign every player that can contribute right now on the DL and that isn’t a rookie that played in the AAC.

    ———————————————————————–
I’d say there’s nothing left to ‘wonder’ about regarding how the Bucs felt on Hall vs Wyatt.

If Wyatt was the higher rated player on the Bucs board – then Licht would have drafted him at 27.

Seems clear Hall was the target all along based on what the Bucs expected to be available at 27. Licht even felt comfortable enough to trade down 6 spots – apparently confident that Hall would still be there to start the 2nd round. And if Hall had been picked at the very end of the 1st – CB Booth (who I was secretly hoping we’d get pre-draft) would have been a very nice fall back option…..

  36. RustyRhinos Says:

    ???
JTS is a veteran now. Played his first season last year making him a veteran NFL player. Yes he is not a multi year NFL player, but he did play his entire first season of Professional football.

  37. Bucsfan13 Says:

I’m sick of the Gabbert slander. Gabbert is the better person with the clipboard and tablet talking with Brady on the sideline. A backup QB has more responsibility than just filing in if the starter got hurt.

RIGHT?? — Damn, man. I have been listening to WDAE for about 30 years and love them, immensely. But the frikking bed they have climbed in with the UNREADABLE “PR” pisses me off.

Steve never cared about any of that s**t. He wanted the guys that HE liked. And when STEVE… .made it very clear who HE wanted to talk to…. I knew who I wanted to listen to and read.

No time of the F’ing day for PR.
