Gamblers Like Julio Jones To The Bucs

May 20th, 2022

Gamblers like Julio Jones gliding to Bucs.

If you are into names over production, then this ought to excite you.

It seems, per our oddsmaker friends in the desert, the Bucs have a good shot at adding a receiver before the NFL season kicks off in September. And that receiver is a big name.

No, not Antonio Brown. The gamblers seem to think former Dixie Chicks and Titans receiver Julio Jones has a strong chance of wearing pewter and red this fall.

That’s the word from Matt Severance of Sportsline.com. The Bucs, among other 2021 playoff teams, seem to be the favorites to sign the former Pro Bowler. The Bucs’ odds of signing Jones are +500.

The Titans definitely didn’t win the trade for Jones from the Falcons last offseason as he finished with just 31 catches for 434 yards and one touchdown in 10 games with Tennessee. Jones did have a solid game in the divisional round upset loss to the Bengals with six catches (four for first downs) for 62 yards. He was released in March, which saved the Titans about $11.3 million in cap space. Jones still ranks first in NFL history in averaging 91.9 yards per game.

At this point, Jones figures to go title chasing – he should have one Super Bowl ring, but the Falcons memorably blew a 28-3 third-quarter lead against New England in Super Bowl LI and lost in overtime. Jones had four catches for 87 yards that night.

The Tom Brady allure can never be overstated in Tampa, either. Jones could help fill in while Chris Godwin works his way back from his torn ACL. There are reports out there that earlier this offseason Brady messaged Jones, “Come on down to the sunshine here in Tampa and let’s be great together.”

Joe thinks Jones is washed. If he had anything left in the tank, you don’t like Mike Vrabel and his staff could have squeezed a few drops out of Jones? Unless someone told you Jones was on the Titans’ roster you wouldn’t have known.

The immortal Cyril Grayson had twice as many touchdown catches last year as Jones.

Joe guesses there is always the possibility that Tom Brady can bring a guy back from the dead. And driving the odds could be the report that Brady was recruiting Jones. But Joe would no way sign Jones for any decent amount of cash. And yeah, Ryan Tannehill isn’t known to get the most out of receivers. Joe admits that.

Joe would rather the Bucs bring back Ndamukong Suh or Jason Pierre-Paul.

Via SportsLine oddsmakers: Which team will sign Julio Jones?

Colts +300
Packers +400
Bucs +500
Bills +700
Patriots +700
Cowboys +800
Ravens +900
Chiefs +1000
Falcons +2000

    No.

  2. Leopold Stotch Says:

Noooooo sir. He’s been overrated for years.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Personally, Joe would rather the Bucs bring back Ndamukong Suh or Jason Pierre-Paul.’

    Yea verily, bring back Suh.

  4. Bucsfanman Says:

Suh’s value cannot be overstated to this defense. Why would we sign a washed-up WR with zero upside or production versus a guy who makes the team better?!

Again, just throwing stuff on the wall to see if it sticks! Also known as “off-season”!

  5. TDTB Says:

    Why not OBJ?

  6. Kalind Says:

As my friend said: get him here rubs some TB12 Method on those hammys and he’ll be back to normal in a month.

  7. Alan Collingwood Says:

JPP isn’t coming back. The Bucs have already given #90 to Logan Hall

  8. SufferingSince76 Says:

    Defensive line is the need.

  9. Beating the Drum Says:

I noticed that many if not most want to talk about defense. I gotta say, we have No, Nada, NO Way a chance without say SUH! We MUST have pressure or we are just wasting our time with talks of a super bowl. I’m sorry for us fans and Tom Brady. Tom’s last year and we’re not serious. What a waste.
Any and ALL that make it to the Big Show HAVE the talent on both Offense and Defense. We are playing chicken with TNT and we’re going to lose.
What in the Sam hell is Licht doing? He certainly Knows This! Why aren’t we serious? What are we all missing here? Why isn’t Licht being FAR MORE aggressive? Is Tom Brady aware??

    ??????????
    Go Bucs???

  10. A Bucs Fan Says:

He still is respected by DB’s when he is on the field. Although he has had a lot of soft tissue injuries and can’t really practice. Not sure it’s worth it unless it’s for the league minimum so the Bucs can address other positions of need.

  11. adam from ny Says:

    yeah……………….no

  12. JA Says:

JPP isn’t coming back. He said as much (I think) during his incomprehensible rant a few weeks back.
Jones was great, but has rarely seen the field the past few seasons due to injury.
If we’re gonna sign anybody, let’s hope it’s Suh. He’s a rock in the middle and rarely complains. Since rocks don’t don’t make headlines unless they’re flying toward earth at breakneck speeds, Suh is damn near overlooked as the main cog in the middle of defense.
Had the Bucs hung on for a victory after overcoming the Ram’s large playoff lead, the game ball most assuredly gone to Suh.
    Sign him!!!

  13. K2 Says:

No will probably play 1 – 3 games before going on IR…NO!

  14. K2 Says:

Bucs still need another EDGE and DL much more than a receiver.

  15. dmatt Says:

Even with Fournette, Godwin, n AB all inactive at different times last year, our offense still put up good numbers n won, however, our defense let us down. Therefore, we need to focus more on the defense. I’m not a believer in JDean n SMB.

  16. Dooley Says:

Nah, no need to waste a roster spot when we’ve got 4-5 guys on the roster already vying to claim that WR3 spot while Godwin is out. Acquiring Jones would be more valuable in Madden then in real life, also we’ve got money to spend elsewhere.

  17. JA Says:

So much for talk writing. Apologize for the grammatical errors, especially the omissions. Doesn’t matter to many here as social media has propelled literary prose into a nosedive, but it matters to me …
    Warning: never compose while driving!

  18. Buczilla Says:

I just never got the infatuation with this criminally overrated dude. All he does is not score touchdowns. His career touchdowns for a supposedly hof player are pathetic considering the rules he played his entire career under. Pass.

  19. #8 Says:

    Suh.

  20. Beeej Says:

    Can you say “pulled hamstring?”

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We don’t need Julio…..& the Titans had 11.3 million reasons to cut him…..

Let’s focus on the Dline…..Suh, for example.

  22. Listnfrmafar Says:

Provided Bucs sign Suh, yes on Jones. Tannahill stinks probably the most overrated QB in the league, for the right price Jones is the depth they need. Still don’t know what happened to Golden Tate it appears he fell off the face of the earth.

  23. Drebucsfan Says:

Out of 25 wr Tannehill has had he made maybe one great…AJ brown! Julio Jones is definitely not the Julio Jones from 2018 BUT he can still produce huge in big moments for Tom Brady and company. His presence alone on the field will make atleast ONE DB notice him and with double coverage on Mike evans, him (Julio Jones)or R. Gage should thrive in our system as the 3rd or 4th target given gronk comes back…man the disrespect lol and fans are calling for Julian Edelman WOW

  24. PassingThru Says:

I would imagine that it is possible but unlikely.

Off the top of my head, I believe he’s missed half of his games the past few years. When I saw him last season, he didn’t look like the same player.

Sure, if Julio signs a cheap contract. It’s possible if the other teams are lukewarm about him, and if conversely, Julio wants a ring and is willing to take a cheap deal. Otherwise, no way.

  25. PassingThru Says:

Yeah, I get the knock on Julio, that he doesn’t score TDs. But the Bucs have two very dangerous weapons for that purpose in Evans and Gronk (assuming he comes back). It’s important to have guys capable of moving the chains. Vintage Julio could do that. The current model of Julio? I’m not so sure.

  26. August 1976 Buc Says:

Julio, like other former great players on the downside of their career can still be a viable option in Crunch time. Julio can still be reliable option in the red zone, or to get first downs. Having Julio line up at the goal line with Brady pulling the trigger, just makes the Bucs offense all the more lethal. With that said, the Bucs are the #1 Red-zone scoring offense the last 2 years, but you can get even better. Add Julio if you can, he surely wont cost much. He would be like a coach on the field with the other receivers.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  27. Anonymous Says:

Julio Jones was hurt last year , a healthy Julio Jones is one of the fastest and still considered one of the best receivers in the league. Gronk is leaning towards retirement so consider this most teams in the NFL use WR also as tight ends and the Packers have already signed a top WR and have cap room to add Jones or Beckham . So not only do the Bucs need to find a replacement for Gronk and let’s face he is one of the best tight ends to play the game. There is also no timeline for Godwin to get back on the field and nobody is or should rush him back until he is 100%. We also have the 4th hardest schedule in the NFL this year . We will be playing quite a few offensive powerhouses in the league. There is a reason Brady has been actively recruiting Jones . Brady has one of the best football names in the game, stars want to play for teams just because they want to play with Brady. Some Of Bucs best players were leaving and the players we pick up and those who stayed was because of brady . If Brady aggressively is recruiting him trust in Brady’s reasoning. I have been a Pats fan my whole life and lived through years of having a sub par team. Brady Comes wins 6 SB comes to Tampa and wins the 7th . Bucs have so many new fans from both FL and New England fans like me . So if Brady thinks he is important part of what the Bucs need support it

  28. Bucsfan4ever Says:

    Is Jerry Rice still alive?

  29. Bucs Win Says:

If the Bucs don’t sign Julio maybe they could get Steve Largent or Lynn Swann instead.

  30. Tbbucs3 Says:

Pass on Julio. Soundd good on paper but spend the money elsewhere.

I do still think we need a contingency plan in case Russel Gage doesnt pan out

  31. ocala Says:

Pass on Julio and Suh and JPP

  32. Anonymous Says:

Have a Hate/Respect relationship with Jones. Hated to play against him, Respected his game every game he played, even against us. But a BIG NO from me for us adding Jones. We have plenty of WR in house, who have many more years left to play. If when Godwin is ready and he is still not himself, maybe then. But why add to our future finacial liability with this signing? No!

  33. Biff Barker Says:

The fact that Julio is currently available tells me all I need to know.

    Pass.

  34. MadMax Says:

Gronk and Akeem Hicks. Thats where the money needs to go.

  35. sasquatch Says:

Bring him to camp for vet minimum, that’s all. Add bonus money for > 50 catches and more than 4 TDs. Take it or leave it.

If he had much left, he wouldn’t still be sitting on the couch.

  36. D-Rok Says:

Bucs4ever, it’s funny you mention Rice. The other day on SiriusXM, Miller and Kirwan were discussing older WR’s – they said T Owens is playing on that Fan League. Then Miller said, quite seriously, that he has seen Rice workout lately and thinks he still could play. Kirwan strongly agreed. Goodness, if Rice actually played, I would call it the greatest comeback in history. Rice was my fave receiver back in 80’s/90’s.

Sorry to get off-topic here but just relaying what I heard. It had to have been a joke, yes??

  37. Eric b Says:

We need to sign suh!! We can still sign Hightower (for a good price) who is a damn good player and replace JPP with trey flowers they have SB wins under thier belt with brady. Also I would forget Julio, but if brady thinks hes still good to go i trust brady. We should of signed Jarvis!!!…But if we can get Julio for a cheap prove it deal sign him..also bradberry went to philly which we should have snagged him..but UNFINISHED BUISSNESS LFGO

  38. Brandon Says:

Jones is done. Suh can contribute a little as a situational pass rusher. If JPP’s shoulder is healthy he can help a team. None should be brought back to the Bucs. JPP looked completely washed near the end of 2020 and then he got hot in the last three playoff games (he was awful against Washington). Armchair GMs just love it when their teams sign recognizable names. They’d rather cheer for the over-the-hill name getting his butt kicked up and down the field than dare root for the Chuck Darby’s and Aaron Stinnie’s of the world that come in and get the job done as well or better than the names they replaced.

  39. Buc1987 Says:

    Sign Suh already.

  40. GOB Says:

The bucs could’ve done a lot better than the ghost of Julio Jones.

  41. steele Says:

After squandering so many opportunities already, when will this team replenish the D and fill in the glaring holes? Tick tick tick. Any big moves that are NOT defense adds to likely problems with the coming season with the death schedule.

TE remains a problem. Gronk cannot be relied on, and they need a co-starter anyway.

Godwin is the other problem, if he really can’t go until October. Bucs will be toast by then.

Julio Jones may have been injured, but what does he have left? There are other WRs that might yield better results. Cole Beasley, proven slot WR, and the kind Brady would love. Odell Beckham, if willing to start another AB-like circus. TY Hilton, Will Fuller, Emm Sanders.

  42. Fishhawkbuc Says:

Whatever it take to get people to click. He is not coming here. Better shot of signing Keyshawn Johnson. That the point, the production would be the same
