Skip Bayless: Tom Brady Has Reached Out To Julio Jones

March 17th, 2022

New Tom Brady target?

Trivia question: Who had more touchdown catches last year, Mike Smith’s favorite receiver, Julio Jones, or the immortal Cyril Grayson?

Answer: Grayson.

Yet despite Bucs quarterback Tom Brady lifting Grayson to become a dangerous receiver, Brady wants more, if you believe Skip Bayless of FOX Sports.

Speaking on one of FS1’s hollering shows, “Undisputed,” Bayless claims a source close to Jones told him Brady has been messaging Jones, inviting him to come to Tampa and, per Bayless, “Let’s be great together.”

Yesterday Joe joked on Twitter what kind of fantasies Brady might be having about playing with Jones? Apparently this is real. But Jones, at least by his play last year, is done, over the hill. It’s why he was basically a non-factor for the AFC South champions Tennessee.

Look, Joe has no issue working out Jones and seeing if he still has anything left in the tank. Joe thinks the Bucs have to humor Brady. If Jones is anything like last year, which means he is finished, Joe would prefer Grayson.

Bayless’ co-host, Shannon Sharpe said there are two concerns with Jones. The first is chemistry with Brady. The second would be Jones’ tender hamstrings. Sharpe said if the Bucs’ medical staff thinks Jones’ hamstrings can withstand another NFL season, then by all means he’s worth a look.

Somewhere, Smith came down with a case of the hives thinking about Jones playing for the Bucs. And Ryan Smith is nowhere to be found to blame.

You can see Bayless break the news in the FS1 video below.

  1. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Wow, he WAS a great receiver, at one time.
That is, before his hamstrings gave out.
Maybe we could send him to Tampa General for a Hamstring Transplant ?

  2. Dew Says:

Bring in a FB to block for Brady & run all 5 receiver sets.

  3. BradyBucs Says:

At least Julio has better hands that Tyler and our other young guys that seems to drop 50% of the balls thrown to them.

  4. LOL Says:

    Yes please

  5. ErikTheViking Says:

Hard pass. We don’t need him. Sign Gronk and Fournette. Then let’s draft for defense and go grab another ring. LFG!!!

  6. Stanglassman Says:

    J. Jones looks like a shell of himself. That body broke down fast What is he expecting to make. Vet league minimum one year prove it?

  7. Lets Go Bucs! Says:

Julio or Cole Beasley? I think Cole would help more!

  8. Bird Says:

    No thank you…pretty please no

  9. LOL Says:

Obviously Bucs need to bring back other key pieces. But if Julio wants a 1 yr Vet minimum deal. Its an absolute no brainer for the Bucs to bring him in

  10. Cobraboy Says:

Maybe TB12 thinks the TB12 Method can fix Jone’s hammies…

Maybe Jones needs massages and hydration, with rabbit food for lunch.

  11. godlovesbucs Says:

As long as he is cool with being the #4 option when Godwin comes back and only sign a vet min 1 year contract.

  12. Oddball Says:

    @chris

    TGH lmao

  13. Joseph C Simmons Says:

Bring in a FB to block for Brady & run all 5 receiver sets.

    ***

Five receivers plus five offensive linemen plus fullback plus Brady means you want us to get flagged for 12 men in the huddle every play.

  14. STL-BucsFan Says:

Gronk, Lenny, Honey Badger, and maybe Calais Cambell and call it after that!

  15. Joseph C Simmons Says:

Julio is a waste of time. Don’t even bother bring him in. What does it matter if he looks good in a workout? His problem isn’t diminishing skills; it’s that his body has broken down. The dude cannot stay healthy.

We’d be lucky to get six games out of him.

  16. Beeej Says:

    Cole Beasley–he can still play

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

“Undisputed,” Bayless claims a source close to Jones told him Brady has been messaging Jones,

“a source” here we go again….the question other than who is when?

Was it before Russell Gage & Breshad Perriman or after.

How many WRs will we carry…

And, I agree….before we start adding on to that group….how about a TE, RB, DT?

  18. Goatfarmer Says:

I’d rather shovel the money it would take for Julio into a barrel that says “Lombardi Lenny” on it.

  19. sasquatch Says:

If he will play for minimum… but let’s spend some money on defense now. Right now we basically have only 1 signed D-lineman who’s any good. Only 1. And the draft isn’t deep on D-line prospects this year.

Come on Tawmy, make some calls to some defenders for us!

  20. Marine Buc Says:

Cole Beasley was just released by the Bills.

I wouldn’t mind bringing him on bard for a cheap one year deal…

Julio Jones would also be a great signing as long as he still doesn’t want #1 WR money and is OK with being the WR3 or WR4.

  21. firethecannons Says:

MarineBuc is right rather workout Cole Beasley JJ is done washed up severely injury prone

  22. Todd Says:

I think Julio would be a GREAT addition! Our acquisition of Richard Sherman worked out well. Julio could coach up the other receivers on the sidelines taking up a roster spot after blowing out a hamstring the second game of the season!

    Great idea!!!

    Bucs trainers need company too!

  23. MadMax Says:

Haha, so many naysayers….Brady was done before coming here (too old)…Big V too big to play in the Tampa heat, Leonard was done (too many miles on those legs) AB crazy in the head issues (which proved right but only after he held it together to help us get a SB)

Theres a few more I cant think of right now.

I say on vet minimum, you know what you’re getting as far as injuries, so he’ll be limited….but those hands, and no diva drama or off field issues…come on man!!!

  24. SlyPirate Says:

Think about Julio like you would Richard Sherman. A player coach. He would level up Tyler Johnson and even Godwin.

Joe, Put in a request to Licht for a RB and some defensive signings. Thx

  25. WalkdaPlank Says:

Julio Jones is not the same guy who dominated the NFC South for years at one time. If anybody could make him better, it’s Brady. However, I don’t see him playing third fiddle to Evans and Godwin, and we just got a good former Falcon in Gage. Also Julio is notorious for not being able to find the end zone. Then there’s the cap.

    Pass

  26. Couch Fan Says:

They were saying the samething about Brady before he came to Tampa. I said it then and I’ll say it again, anytime you have a chance to sign a hall of fame player, you take it. If Jones has anything left, the Goat will get it out of him. Assuming he’s not asking for to much money that is. Low risk/High reward.

  27. Bucsfanman Says:

The REAL question is, who DID NOT get a DM from Brady?!

Hear me out. As many know, it’s easy to get fat fingers and accidentally send an email, text or DM to someone. I’m guessing fat-fingered Tommy hit “Reply ALL” or “Everyone”! Thus, every known skill player not already on the team got the same DM!
Even AB! And he’s probably curled in the fetal position right now with all the news of Brady reaching to others!

  28. Casual Observer Says:

    Too many WRs.

  29. MadMax Says:

We put a few WR on the practice squad….problem solved….if they get picked up, so be it….Tyler and Scotty

  30. LVMYBUCS Says:

Here we go again focusing on the offense and not enough on the defense.

  31. MadMax Says:

I got you LUV, Logan Hall the CB Alontae Taylor in the 3rd….watcha think?

  32. LOL Says:

A lot of failed GMs in this thread LOL

  33. Cobraboy Says:

@Todd: with Evans, Godwin & Gage, nobody in the WR room needs to be “coached up” by another WR.

    Evans>Jones
    Godwin>Jones
    Today, Gage>Jones

  34. PassingThru Says:

Sure, why not? I doubt Julio is going to entertain high-dollar contractual offers. Personally, I think he’s done, but last season demonstrated what happens when you lose two quality starting WRs. Jones would have to agree to play as a cheap, rotational WR, which might extend his shelf-life.

  35. EEK Says:

    4th receiver
    yes

  36. Marine Buc Says:

    @ casual

    “too many wide receivers”

After last year’s debacle – no such thing…

  37. Bobojango Says:

I keep reading CG might not be ready till the 2nd half the year. So we one injury away from Gage being our #1. So if Julio wants to play in Tampa on a team Friendly deal , I’ll take it.

  38. IE Buc Says:

I would love to have Julio Jones if we can get him cheap as a #4 or #5 WR option. Make no mistake, he is purely depth at this point.

  39. Buc king Says:

I say doooo it…he be great depth we let him work him self into the offense get him healthy..
Great back up for Mike evans..until godwin back we need as many receiver as we can muster.

  40. Goatfarmer Says:

Maybe Julio can play edge and rush the passer.

  41. Ash Says:

Feels like bucs are good on recievers he can call some dts or situational pass rushers please

  42. TampabayDJ82 Says:

Shannon Sharpe and Skip Bayless…. The same guys that were saying that Brady “RETIRED FROM THE BUCS, NOT THE NFL” & ” BRADY WILL BE PLAYING FOR THE 49ERS WEEK 1 ” !!!??? 5 minutes later Brady said he was returning to play for the BUCS !! Funny how you can’t find any of those fakeass Media pukes post about how much Brady hated BA and was going to play elsewhere next season !! GO BUCS

  43. Rod Munch Says:

What Tom Brady wants, Tom Brady gets.

Tell Brady we’ll do this deal, so long as Brady does an extention so we can pay for this.

  44. Jerry Says:

We ran out of WRs last year even though we thought we were loaded. Brady doesn’t want to take that chance again.

  45. Steven007 Says:

Wouldn’t mind getting Julio on the cheap. As a depth receiver. Four wide sets and all that. But as others have mentioned, our top three receivers are already better than him.

  46. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Marine Buc

CG getting hurt and then Antonio Brown going crazy and ABing as he did his best Richard Simmons imitation during the Jets game should show everyone that BA’s and Brady’s intermixed offense NEEDS good WR’s to make it go.

I will always love Scotty Miller for his TD at halftime against the Packers, but he didn’t perform like we expected, Cyril got hurt, Perriman got hurt and Tyler Johnson did not catch the ball well.

Last season showed us that we need depth at the WR position for TB12.

  47. WVBuc Says:

    Dew Says:
    March 17th, 2022 at 12:24 pm
Bring in a FB to block for Brady & run all 5 receiver sets

Math sometimes will math you when you are least expecting math to matter.

In a 5 receiver set, the FB will have to throw the ball or watch from the sidelines.

    WR. T-G-C-G-T. WR
    WR. WR. WR

    FB

That’s eleven, no room for Brady in this plan, you’re gonna have to settle for 4. :.

  48. TampabayDJ82 Says:

WR is the last thing we need as of now !! GRONK , Lenny , and Gholston should come before another WR .. Plus he cries if he doesn’t get the ball thrown to him 10 times a game..

  49. Mort Says:

Get him for vet min and maybe a couple incentives and let’s go. No harm no foul if he sucks in TC.

  50. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Belle Glade

Amen… This offense thrives when it has at least three legit, healthy receivers running it and at least one tight end not named OJ Howard…

  51. Oneilbuc Says:

No he’s wash up now !!

  52. Listnfrmafar Says:

HARD NO, he couldn’t get along with Vrabel who was taught the same discipline as Brady. Landry YES, Jones NO. Brady needs to fill in for Godwin until he’s back, he does NOT want to be left short handed AGAIN!

  53. Your Mom Says:

Jones is only like 33 yo… would he be washed up already?

Can’t say I’d feel great about this report if I were Cyril Grayson or Scotty Miller. “What did I do?”

  54. Mike Johnson Says:

Our Bucs and Brady are reaching out to everybody and everything except what beat Them down last year…..Great Players for a real good defense. Can’t win no Championship without a very good defense sonny.

  55. Rod Munch Says:

Bucs WRs get hurt literally every single year, you can never have too many guys. Anyone who doesn’t get that is a dope.

Between Godwin already injured and Jones always getting injured, between the two you might squeeze out a solid 12 games on the year.

  56. Allbuccedup Says:

Titans still owe him 11 plus mil offer him offer him 2 mil plus incentives if he makes the team.

  57. Dapostman Says:

Makes you wonder how Jerry Rice had over 2,000 yards after age 40 and all these other guys are done in their mid 30’s.

  58. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Make him run sprints in training camp. See if the hammys survive. Then pay hiim.

  59. Jeagan1999 Says:

Not sure what Julio has left in the tank….however, if Cole Beasley wanted to win a ring, I’d be all over that!!

  60. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Yeah screw Julio – I’m in the Cole Beasley Camp. Brady Thrives with quick twitch – slot receivers that run great routes- w/good hands.

  61. Listnfrmafar Says:

Nobody likes Jarvis Landry or Patterson who would serve multiple roles?

  62. David Says:

He could be good insurance in a lesser role if cheap enough.
Not sure if he is washed up with no more quickness & speed or it was Tennessee’s passing game

  63. Bucsfanman Says:

Listn- I do, but at what price? Landry is a beast and Cordarrelle fixes our return woes.

LUV- I agree with you on that one. Beasley is more that Edelman/Welker type.

  64. Pewter Power Says:

That must be a joke, we’re not going out to find your grandparents friends to play ball with. You still need a defense dude unless you plan on outscoring everyone. Please don’t let this guy be lebron and bring in a Westbrook

  65. Jmarkbuc Says:

Patterson was awesome last year. Brady would love him and Winfield wouldn’t have to tackle him.

  66. cleanhouse Says:

Joe- “I’d rather have Grayson than Julio Jones.”

Sir I’m sorry, you and all of the other buffoons on this thread have lost all credibility.

Julio freakin Jones- One of the very best to ever do it- working through some injury- I’ll take a flyer on that all day long.

  67. Bucanero Says:

    pile them up for redundancy

  68. Rod Munch Says:

Patterson would be a great pickup, as a pass catching RB and a return guy. Said last season they should pick him up for that same role. I assume he’ll get too much money, but then again no one wants to pay RBs, so if he’s getting garbage money regardless, maybe he’d take garbage from us. Fills that 3rd down role and special teams role, would be huge.

  69. #8 Says:

Dude if its Patterson holy cow- Return game alone is worth it vs. what existed last year…

  70. Rod Munch Says:

Joe- “I’d rather have Grayson than Julio Jones.”

    ——-

I didn’t notice that until cleanhouse posted it…

Wow, Joe, are you hitting the meth pipe or just doing ‘HOTTTTT TAKESSSSS THAT R TOOOOOOO HOTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!’

I’ll take the lottery ticket that is Julio, literally any day of the week over Grayson. That comment reminds me of all the people who said the team wouldn’t miss Brown because Grayson would step right into his role.

Julio wasn’t washed up last year, he was just injured like he always was. You know who else was injured? Grayson. He had a nice game verus a terrible Jets defense, and then did nothing.

Again, I’ll take my chances with Julio – and this is a great team to do that with since you have other WR options who can play when he’s injured, because he’s going to be injured. But I’ll take my chances with 8 weeks of Julio.

  71. Craig Says:

The Bucs will probably cut Tyler Johnson and Darden before the season starts. If Julio comes, he will probably be cut too.

That would be a waste of money, if Godwin can play this season. If Godwin is damaged goods, then Julio will be better than the other two, so a definite maybe.

  72. Lesko_Brandon Says:

Too many WR’s ? i dont think so, One hit by the Slimy Saints again to Evans or Godwin, we are back to no receivers.

  73. SC_BUCS_FAN Says:

    no brainer
    receivers are fragile
you can’t have enough good ones on the roster
    make it happen

  74. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Bucsfanman

Bruh Patterson would completely change the dynamics of this offense.
Dude’s the epitome of the term JACK-OF-ALL-TRADES when come to football.

  75. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Cont..

Yeah he’s definitely in that Edelman/Welker mold

  76. Mike Johnson Says:

My Bucs are Busy loadin up on Offense. Well, we gonna need it because Our Defense sure as hell cannot get off the field , pass rush or stop anybody.

  77. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    MadMax

    Whats’ Up Bruh?

  78. HC Grover Says:

    If Brady wants Julio…get Julio.

  79. BelleGladeBuc Says:

I would LOVE if the Bucs got Patterson. He would help fix the return game and the running back situation.

  80. Ash Says:

za’darius smith didn’t sign with the Ravens and is still a free agent get on the phone Tom

  81. SOEbuc Says:

Where the hell is Lenny??? Him and Vaughn could be dynamite, especially if Mason is a great run blocker between Jensen and Wirfs.

  82. FairMinded Says:

Julio in the slot is money compared to any second tier guy on our roster. No one will ask him to come in and be a burner

  83. sasquatch Says:

This story was probably planted by Julio Jones’ agent.

Aging veterans with nothing left are low priority signings who can wait. Anything more than minimum salary would tell me the front office has rolled over to give in to all of Brady’s whims.

Spend some money on the friggin’ DEFENSE!

  84. Matlok727 Says:

Remember when randy moss was washed up wasn’t the same in Oakland? I’m not saying same thing will happen but worth a shot right?

  85. FairMinded Says:

We can’t afford Cordarelle…he’s due for a big pay day

  86. Defense Rules Says:

‘Joe thinks the Bucs have to humor Brady. ‘

Obviously someone just hacked your website Joe, because I can’t believe you’d ever write that. Recommend you either stop leaving your passwords lying around or stop drinking so many Big Storm beers.

If not for Brady, there’d be no Godwin, no Jensen, no Mason, no Gage, and very probably no Davis. And I’m still convinced that thanks to TB12 several more like Gronk & Lenny will re-up. So if ‘humoring Brady’ is what it’ll take for the Bucs to be ‘relevant’ this season, then humor him as much as he wants.

  87. Buc4evr Says:

I for one would like to see if Julio can make the team if we can get him for vet minimum. He would be the perfect #4 and could step up when Godwin goes down.

  88. Anonymous Says:

    Jarvis Landry

  89. Ash Says:

Yup would like them do a splash signing on the defense za’darius smith is out there waiting for the bucs to scoop him up

  90. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

    Matlok727,,,,

    FASCINATING comment, man.

You are right. I remember Randy Moss in Oakland. He is done. He is washed up. Why is he still playing?

And then he joined Tom in New England….. and had one of the most prolific seasons in WR history.

  91. Ruyen Says:

The budget answer at WR is none other than Danny Amendola. No one was more clutch and consistent than playoff ‘Dola, he completely sided with Tom vs Bill (“Tom *is* the Patriot Way”), he knows Brady, and he can still ball. The dude took over a game for the lowly Texans last year. Also, he’d new cheap.

  92. Cobraboy Says:

I want Brady to make some DMs to FA D players…

  93. Ruyen Says:

    Typo: He’d *be* cheap.
Also, I meant he knows Brady, as in: They’d be in the same page, he’d be where Tom expects him to be.

  94. BelleGladeBuc Says:

As much fun as it would be to add another WR weapon, I really think that the Bucs need to resign Gronk, Suh, Gholston and Lenny.

Lenny and Gronk are the offensive security blankets for TB12 that we need.

Suh and Gholston help us continue our dominance in the trenches against our opponents rush attack.

With those resignings, then the Bucs draft and who else we might need to pick up in next in FA becomes much clearer.

  95. 904 Bucs fan Says:

    JJ = silly chatter

    See BelleGladeBuc-

Talk Playoff Lenny, Gronk, Gholsten and Suh

  96. Pruritus Ani Says:

Give TB12 anything he wants. Just keep him happy. No harm in bringing him in for a workout.

  97. Listnfrmafar Says:

Patterson has been kicked around the league, he isn’t a big money guy. He also played a few.years with Brady. I believe he was on the team when the beat the Rams in the SB.

  98. adam from ny Says:

honestly i would rather bring in adam humphries before julio jones at this point…

    adam humphries…

(another one of those little white receivers that brady can potentially lift to another level in their career – even though he is getting older now)

  99. Anonymous Says:

The Buccaneers must target Julio Jones because he can really help us out because if we get Godwin back and we already have Russell Gage and Mike Evans and a good blocker then we just need a linebacker like Bobby Wagner and resign the Gronk. I think we should also try to consider a possible targets: Fletcher Cox and Cole Beasley.

  100. Elias says. Says:

I think the Buccaneers need to resign the Gronk then maybe go after Fletcher Cox and maybe get Bobby Wagner and then if nobody hasn’t taken Cole Beasley then get him. But we really need to sign Julio Jones because he would really help us out and we already have Russell Gage and Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.
My opinion is that I think Tyrann Matthieu is the perfect fit for the Bucs same with Fletcher Cox. We also need to target some blockers so they can protect Tom Brady.

  101. Oneilbuc Says:

Who cares Skip Bayless says this is the same guy who disrespect the bucs every day by calling us the suckaneers!! Look how weak Joe and Ira Kaufman look because they never check Skip Bayless on the names he call our team. That’s why I say we a sorry franchise and fan base !!

  102. Biff Barker Says:

I’m in the Coradelle Patterson camp too. GOAT knows how to use this style of player. He really could have helped last year.

  103. steele Says:

It’s not clear if Julio has much left. At best he could surprise, as a possession type, but not worth it. Veteran min. “show me” take it or leave it.

Does Brady still need a Julian Edelman type? Cole Beasley, Zach Pascal, Jamison Crowder. Along with James White at RB.

I like the idea of a FB and more smashmouth running, but does the Arians offense even do that? Patrick Ricard, one of the best run blocking FBs is out there, former Pats Jakob Johnson, or a lower round draft pick.

  104. Tony Says:

Kind of surprised they’re not giving John Brown a chance. When he gets the chance he plays well.

  105. MadMax Says:

Not much LUV, doing my thing, allbeit with limited time now. Working, making more than Ive ever made, but it should be that way for as old as I am right? lol

Im thinking we should take Logan Hall at 27, I think he’ll be there. Not sure if Suh is coming back so we need this D line pick (even if he does come back for 1 yr). He needs a little coaching but he has his length and motor that cant be taught.

  106. Buczilla Says:

I know that Ira loves this guy, but Jones is one of the most overrated players in the history of the NFL. His touchdown production throughout his career downright sucks for a supposed hall of fame player. If he’s he’s healthy though, he’d be a decent number 5 on our team.

  107. Joe Nesbitt Says:

Yeah you guys need another AB to poison your WR corp. Tom must have a fetish.
