Chris Godwin’s Absence Looms Large

May 12th, 2022

Please get healthy, soon.

The ballpark guesstimate for star receiver Chris Godwin’s rehab was thought to be a return in October. Rumors from a former Bucs player with reliable contacts at One Buc Palace had a much darker return date.

October, after Thanksgiving, whatever, Godwin’s absence will be felt badly in the first four games of the season.

The Bucs will face three division winners from 2021 and Tom Brady’s kryptonite in the first four games. Here is the gauntlet:

Week 1: at Cowboys
Week 2: at slimy Saints
Week 3: Packers
Week 4: Chiefs

Joe will go ahead and say it: If the Bucs are 2-2 after the first four games, Joe won’t be crying about it. That is a brutal schedule to begin a season.

You can just about chalk up the Packers game as a win. Drama queen Aaron Rodgers, aside from being a choke artist in the playoffs, is awful in warm-weather games. Last year Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, and the slimy Saints absolutely clobbered the Packers to open the season at Jacksonville.

Two years ago in mid-October (still summertime locally) when Rodgers and the Packers played the Bucs in the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway, Ndamukong Suh, Jamel Dean, Brady and the Bucs stomped the Packers good and proper.

It’s as if Rodgers doesn’t like to sweat. Aw.

Russell Gage, the Bucs will need you to play large right off the bat. No excuses. Be ready. Rent a bedroom from Brady like quitter Antonio Brown did if you have to.

We are going to find out exactly what kind of a head coach we have very quick.

  2. K2 Says:

Maybe Joe should go to church every day and pray Godwin returns quicker????

  3. DoooshLaRue Says:

Yep, start penciling in those wins and losses folks, nothing is gonna change from now until then.
Hell, write it down with a pen so it’s permanent…..

  4. David Says:

Personally I think 3-1. The Packers are worse this year and I think they sweep the Saints this year. Split the Chiefs and Dallas.

Gage should be good. I am interested to see what Grayson and Perriman and the others have to offer.

  5. Bojim Says:

Probably be throwing a shtload Lenny’s way.

  6. Buc92’ Says:

We will be just fine , all this organized chaos doesn’t move me lol… I doubt any knows godwins time table outside of him , his wife & trainer… Godwin is very private & quite

    GoBucs!

    Can’t hurt, huh?

Between this and the terrible Shawn King take one of the Joes is getting way too antsy in May.

this slow schedule leak is a f’in joke…

    but i have us 3 -1 in first 4

  11. adam from ny Says:

less heat for vita and tom, and other older dudes isn’t such a bad thing

  12. OBVIOUS Says:

Oof! That’s one hell of a line up!
This is my first look so forgive me if I’m staggered. I think Cavillator up there is right on the money. I suppose it’s a good thing we have the same coaching staff and other familiar faces already in place. I’m also starting to feel like we should gear up a bit more than we have to take on this gauntlet. Why haven’t we resigned Suh yet?! Yeah, we’re gonna be needing Mr. Godwin ASAP!

And again, OOF! Certainly a trial by a Very Hot Fire 🔥for our new head coach.

But then, I’m a Believer in this team and Twice on Sundays!

    GO BUCS!

  13. D-Rok Says:

We all look and see a “brutal”4-game stretch to start the season, ONLY based on last year’s talent. Each team is different each year. Let’s worry more about how the Bucs look this year than worry about how good every other team is.

  14. GOB Says:

What a matter for you? (like my Nona always said) Joe dedicated enough keystrokes last year talking about an undefeated season to give us all carpel tunnel. The NFL can quickly make realists out of us all.

  15. Steven007 Says:

Chalk it up as a win? No game can be chalked up as a win. Silly stuff. Hope it’s a win and it seems to be a favorable matchup in Tampa but come on now…

  16. DoooshLaRue Says:

I think we go 1-1-2 thru the first 4 games.

  17. GOB Says:

    0-2-2.

  18. Bucsfan13 Says:

Give CG whatever organic potion is served at the TB facility. We need by week 1

  19. stpetebucsfan Says:

Hopefully Scottie Miller’s turf toe is completely healed and he’s ready to go.

If he returned to the same form he had his first season with Brady that would help fill in for CG’s abscence.

Historically Brady has loved hitting RB’s out of the backfield and TE’s. If Gronk doesn’t return that means the rookie has to step up although a stud blocking TE to complement Brate wouldn’t be a bad deal.

  20. SPARKY Says:

Wow guys, 4yrs ago Brady would have been happier than he’ll to be throwing to guys like Evans, Gage, Gronk, Lenny , Gio, and who else they put out there. We will be fine.

  21. Buc4evr Says:

Think we can get by w/o Goodwin, especially if TB12 can convince Jason to pick up Julio and of course if Gronk comes back in playing shape for the first game. Biggest concern is the D-line and OLB. Bucs better re-sign Suh and JPP.

  22. sasquatch Says:

^JPP is done… And as for Suh, we can do better for cheaper.

  23. Bucsfan13 Says:

Scotty is a one trick pony. He runs a limited route tree and he’s small. It’s time to move on. I’m not sold on Johnson, Perriman, Grayson at all. We should’ve at least thought about bringing in a another FA receiver. We also didn’t improve our defense. We’re not all in. The team is too busy pinching pennies.

  24. TampabayDJ82 Says:

Bucs are going to win 13 or more games this year ! Cowboys are not the same team either are the Packers and Chiefs ! The Rams are going to be tough but I think we pull it out. Our biggest disappointments are the games we should win and end up losing.. Go Bucs and Joe !!

  25. Capt.Tim Says:

Thankfully Julian Edelman and Gronk will help cover for Godwin.

Besides Edelman, I wonder if Brady is trying to talk a certain Left Guard out of unexpected retirement?

  26. Adrnagy Says:

Most are banking godwin comes back and theres no set back along the way. Gage is a newbie. Evans , godwin barely have a connection with brady after 2 yrs.

Imo go and get another veteran WR. I dont trust darden, miller , johnson to step up and be a key factor.

Perriman , grayson maybe. Thats why i keep saying to release gabbert and griffin. Those spot are better serve elsewhere. Plus os brady goes down gabbert will still be available. No one will pick him up meanwhile. Too much insurance at the QB position.

  27. Borkdog Says:

Licht on phone now, or at least hope so… with Julio Jones and/or Jarvis Landry. Think rumor has Jarvis around Tampa a few times???Tough first 4 without Godwin. Evans, Gage and Gronk not enough to start this season. Takes pressure off Godwin return until nearing playoffs. Dial the numbers…….

  28. TJ Says:

What level of early regular season success will come down to the Defense and penalties. Specifically the secondary. Prescott torched us for 450 yards. I see a guarenteed repeat of that in game 1 next year as we try to find our identity as a Bowles lead team. Bowles DOES have the tape on all these teams since we played them all last year. Can our secondary gel early? Very possible. We have enough new faces on D where Discipline and penalties can be improved upon. Welcome to the
    show Mr. Bowles.

Brady will do Brady and we will rely heavily on winning shootouts until we hit our stride as a defense and gain our identity as a team. One thing you can take to the bank. Brady being a MVP candidate after 4 weeks with 1300 yards and 11 TDs by the end of week 4 because we will be behind in a lot of games and/or like I mentioned–in a shootout. I 100% agree with Joe for once. 2-2 and I’m happy af as well.

  29. Buczilla Says:

Man, I love Chris as a player when he is healthy, but we can’t rely on him this year. He’s recuperating from a major injury, no one knows when he is coming back, and no one knows whether or not he will be effective. Gage is a nice player, but not in Godwin’s league and I figured that he was coming in to compliment Mike and Chris, not to replace Chris for potentially the majority of the season. Our receivers behind Gage either stink or are unproven yet we’ve done nothing to remedy it. Please have a plan to bring in more receiver help Mr. Licht.

  30. Jeff Says:

Gage is better than Godwin who is shockingly overrated. Bucs need a reliable 3rd WR or they are going to be a 9 win team

  31. RustyRhinos Says:

What would “really” loom large is if he was out there in OTA’s and reinjured, his knee. Sure it would be great to see him out on the field running, cutting, jumping, what happens if two feet get twisted up and he reinjures his knee. Not the first 3-5 games will he miss, maybe most all of the season. Would that be better than him missing OTA’s?
    LFG Godwin!!!!
    LFG Bucs!!!!

  32. AB Says:

Last year they had a a healthy Evans, Godwin, and AB (until the injuries and meltdown).

This year they have a healthy Evans, injured Godwin and no AB…

the only addition is Gage – is he replacing Godiwn until he comes back? Is he replacing AB, indefinitely?

Gage may be a nice option but he is clearly not in same league as Godwin or AB.

They don’t just need a #3 – they need an eventual #3 who has the ability to put up #1/#2 numbers while Godwin is not 100%…otherwise, it’s going to be a very tough season.

  33. Thadeus Says:

Should have traded him for a decent RB. Oh well.

  34. Eddie Marz Says:

Joe 2-2 you sound like a loser. It wouldn’t surprise me if The Bucs win every game. Stop thinking like a loser. GOBUCS!

  35. Jodibrown74@yahoo.com Says:

What am I missing? The Cowboys will be without Gallup. The Packers don’t have Adams. And the Chiefs doesn’t have Tyreek. So they are with talented wr also

  36. Dman Says:

Big $$$ for Godwin feels like a three year contract but a two year deal. He’s gonna spend the season rehabbing with the plan we get him back for the playoffs.

  37. RIbuc Says:

I am worried about not having Godwin. Feel a little better with Gage aboard. Schedule looks brutal and scares the hell out of me. But I bet Brady is thinking about trying to go out with undefeated season. Crazy, but this guy is a motivational monster! Lol! Let the games begin! Go bucs!

  38. Foreveverblue Says:

The Bucs could win all four of those games. Tough yes but not impossible. If the offense continue to score 30+ points Per game then why not. We are already moving to a younger DL. With Brady I like our chances in every game.

  39. Frstn10 Says:

    Sign Edelman!!!

  40. Frstn10 Says:

    Sign Edelman!!!

  41. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

SINCE DALLAS IS STILL INTERESTED IN JPP..TRADE HIM FOR THEIR 3RD STRING QUARTERBACK “WILL GRIER “PUT KYLE TRASK AS BRADY’S BACKUP & DUMP BOTH GABBERT & RYAN.
PIT TRASK IN BACKUP SPOT (HE KNOWS THE SYSTEM)LET WILL GRIER DEVELOP & LEARN OUR SYSTEM.. BOTH THESE EX-GATORS WERE 4TH IN HEISMAN VOTING THEIR SENIOR YEARS(GRIER TRANSFERRED TO WEST VIRGINIA HIS LAST 2-3 COLLEGE YEARS..(BOTH ARE VERY ACCURATE PASSERS & WOULD BE A BIG UPGRADE FOR NOW & THE FUTURE OF OUR BUCCANEERS…PLEASE,PLEASE DUMP GABBERT & RYAN FOR THES OTHER 2 QUARTERBACKS..THE BUC’S NOW & FUTURE ARE AT STAKE IF YOU DON’T..RESIGN SUH FOR ONE MORE YEAR,WE NEED HIS VETERAN LEADERSHIP IF ONLY IN A ROTATIONAL ROLE..

  42. Ed Says:

How much do you believe-in the line that opposing teams play with more intensity against the reining Super Bowl champs? This year it’s the Rams, and the Buccaneers are off the hook.

    So, there’s that.

Plus, ya, Gage. Can’t wait for Brady’s first chain-movin’ drive, and see how that’s gonna look like.

And then, Rachaad White, who wants Gio’s job.

    Some very interesting possibilities.

  43. Defy9Ordinary Says:

2 – 2 give me a break! 4 – 0 is where it’s at & definitely possible. The majority of this offense has been playing together for the 3 yrs. with BRADY. The competition is either depleted, the Cowboys & Packers, or the Saints n’ Chiefs have new offensive weapons, which equals time-time-time to get acclimated within the system… The Buccaneers need to have a mad wideout competition in the offseason & keep plenty RELIABLE, explosive PLAY MAKERS on the roster > We’ll be ready to roll!! #LFG
