Will Gholston’s Replacement?

April 29th, 2022

Bucs DE/DT Will Gholston.

If you talk to Bucs honchos, they will tell you that Will Gholston is the prototype defensive end for Todd Bowles’ 3-4 defense.

And guess who has a similar body type?

The Bucs made interior defensive lineman Logan Hall their first pick in the 2022 NFL Draft at No. 33 overall tonight (first pick in Round 2). The easy reaction is that he will replace manbeast defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh this year or next.

However, Joe looks at Hall and sees a guy built a lot like Gholston. Hall stands 6-6, 283 pounds and has a 30 inch vertical leap and ran a 4.88-second 40 yard dash. Gholston was nearly an identical size when he was drafted in 2013 (2 pounds less), and he was only a hair less explosive.

The Bucs tried to plug Gholston into a 4-3 defense. They asked him to cut weight and play the edge. He didn’t fully blossom until he hit Bowles’ 3-4 defense and built his body over 300 pounds.

Gholston, who turns 31 this summer, signed a one-year contract this offseason. And while the Bucs are touting the versatility of Hall, Joe easily could see Hall’s future being at Gholston’s spot.

Joe realizes cynical Bucs will say you don’t spend the No. 33 overall pick on Gholston’s replacement, but that could end up being the reality.

    No Qb’s yet…
    Who do we want next?

    Bingo

    GO BUCS

  3. SB Says:

I am good with what Licht did. He obviously tried to fleece a QB hungry team to trade up but it seems as if all teams know what I knew.
No QBs worth having this yr.

  4. SB Says:

    Is ‘fleece’ the filter word?

  5. SB Says:

    Yes, ……..Yes it is.

    Need O line

  8. Craig Says:

I see Gholston getting another year after this. The 3-4 needs a good rotation of players at the front, Hall and Gholston will rotate this year and next.

  9. SOEbuc Says:

Like JTS last year, he’ll probably have to put on some weight first year.

    What?

  11. Lamarcus Says:

There’s no Suh or who going to play the other DE/DT? Who Roches??

  12. Austin Says:

Gholston ain’t going anywhere for a while lol he’s a staple here. These guys will rotate constantly, the more the merrier

  13. SOEbuc Says:

Hall sounds like another one of these young professionals the Bucs draft.

  14. CharlieV Says:

Gloston is a glue guy. He’s versatile, durable and all teams need what he brings to the team. Hall needs to bring this and more, as Gholston was a 4th rounder. I trust in Jason, especially when it comes to the big guys.
Just my best guess but I’m thing Gholston returns and next year we have them both. Who better to learn from?

He’s Suh’s replacement. Gholston has more years in front of him than Suh… and you may have noticed Suh isn’t signed.

  16. MadMax Says:

He’s not Gholston yet….come on now. But he’ll be just like him eventually except on the other side…..I love Will, ya’ll know that….theres only one Gholston, but if there can be another player like him, thats a blessing for us!

  17. Kevin Says:

Gholston is a solid player but he peaked so late in his career. Finally became a decent pass rusher when he turned 30 years old. If Hall can essentially pick up where Gholston left off, we’ll have a solid 2nd rounder. Loved the trade down, got the first pick in 2nd and 4th rounds…GO BUCS

You never have too many good defensive linemen. Will can hang with the Bucs as long as he can compete.
