Who Won The Trade?

April 29th, 2022

Shuffling picks.

So the Bucs got two extra draft picks by flipping the No. 27 pick to the Jags for their No. 33 pick overall, which will open tonight’s second round.

Which team won? We won’t know for years.

The Bucs also got the first picks of Rounds 4 and 6 for their gift to Jacksonville.

Joe was listening to the recent “GM Shuffle” podcast, hosted by former NFL suit and coffee fetcher Michael Lombardi. Draft trades were a topic and Lombardi stressed that adding draft picks through a trade doesn’t mean squat if the players acquired don’t become productive.

The key with trades, Lombardi said, is if you get the player(s) you want, and that he produces. That is so true. It’s not the value of the picks, it is the value of the players selected. Can the Bucs take advantage?

The Bucs passed up likely impactful starters by standing pat at No. 27 and then trading back. Can Jason Licht make up for that with extra draft picks the next two days?

Short answer…. YES ABSOLUTELY !! Great trade

  2. Rod Munch Says:

One of the issues when you start talking about 4ths and 6ths, is how many comp picks the NFL gives out now, it’s a lot more than in the past (or at least seems that way). So that top of the 4th, is actually more of a mid-4th, while the top of the 6th, is more like a 7th, meaning it’s very unlikely that pick even makes the team (it can happen but is rare).

BUT if the team was just going to draft Logan Hall or McBride with the 1st rounder, then they certainly knew both would still be available and they got an extra 4th out of it (i’m not counting the 6th).

  3. Destinjohnny Says:

Yep we have always nailed our second round pics……

  4. Lamarcus Says:

We did of course. It’s a weak draft. Not as easy drafting this late as it is top 15

  5. Joe in Michigan Says:

I guess it depends what the Bucs do with said picks. There’s obviously still good players left, and I have a good feeling about a player falling to the Bucs with the 1st pick of the 3rd day (4th Round). We’ll see.

  6. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Most late round picks won’t make this deep roster, so you moved from the first with a extra year contract for two late rounder back ups

  7. Rod Munch Says:

Man, Wyatt just looked like a guy that could play early (he’s 24), and to me, on tape, just looked really good. Unlike most rookies, because of his age and the combine, he might have had a good rookie season. But I don’t know the off the field stuff, and the Bucs passed on him, so they don’t think he’s as good as I think, or his red flags are serious.

In any case, we didn’t take him, so doesn’t matter now. Hopefully he goes to Green Bay, gets sick of everyone complaining about taking him instead of a WR, and throws a couple of fans off the top of the stadium, thus proving the red flags correct.

  8. NCFloridiot Says:

Which Joe is this? I thought I JUST read that the math was right for us to trade back… But I did REALLY like some of the guys taken just ahead of 27, including 27, and just behind 27… That being said, I trust JL & company, they know more than any of us… Go Bucs!

  9. Francisco Guzman Says:

Rod Munch packers will likely be taking two wideouts in this second round. Have the Bucs done anything to get better defensively? That’s still their Achilles heel. Meanwhile the slimy saints got a toy and a pretty solid OL.

  10. John Mason Says:

Like Joe said…..Buc’s did not have the money left for a 1st round pick….sad we let impact players get away but if the money is not there its not there.

Well, the Patriots took a 4th Rounder in the 1st Round. So there’s that.

Bill has he horrible at drafting for 4 years, I laugh every year at his schemes. Mac Jones was decent but he fell right to him. But he currently has 11 selections in 2022 draft. And Most won’t make the 53 man starting roster week 1.

Bill is a genius, and I’m sure Cole Strange will be a good player. Good chance you could’ve gotten him later, though.

  17. sasquatch Says:

More than likely he had a group of players similarly rated at 27 and knew that some would still be there at 33. Dropping down 6 spots, grabbing extra picks, and still drafting one of your original targets is a big WIN. Yes, of course those extra picks need to be used wisely.

  18. adam from ny Says:

so we passed on top defensive options and are now looking at top offensive options?

    breece hall
    christian watson
    issiah spiller
    walker III

  19. Austin Says:

Both sides won, Jacksonville got an absolute beast of s linebacker and we get Ballin picks. Win win

  20. sasquatch Says:

^^nope… they passed on who you thought were their top defensive options… but I’m pretty sure Licht knew what would still be there at 33 and was happy with it. Just because you like Devonte Wyatt doesn’t mean they did (with the domestic violence charges, plus the fact he’s more of a 3-tech). They may prefer Logan Hall. On the D-line or Andrew Booth at CB. I think Licht knows how this works.

  21. New England Patriots Fan Says:

    Trade
    Round 2 – No. 33 overall
    Round 2 – No. 60
    Round 3 – No. 91
Round 4 – No. 106 (first pick of Round 4)

Can have 4 players in top 106. Without the trade you had 27 60 91. Or three in top 100.

If they can turn 33 into two extra 3s and move into the again 2nd, so they pick say between 37-91, 5, 3 seconds 2 thirds picks instead of 4, they could get 5 backups and 1 starter maybe for 2022.

  22. adam from ny Says:

jpp just texted licht that his price went back up 🙂

  23. Francisco Guzman Says:

New England Patriots Fan bill sometimes thinks he’s the smartest man in the room. Brady covered a lot of his draft mistakes. They had chances to draft some defensive talent and pass on it. In a couple of years if he keeps this up Kraft will give him the pink slip as a Gm.

  24. adam from ny Says:

    i think they’re possibly going breece hall…

    with no brady contract…

todd is prolly telling jason not to worry about defense…saying things like…he can develop guys from home depot

  25. Bucco Bruce Says:

Screw it, draft Christian Watson now and get the 2nd best wr in the draft at 33. In all seriousness (even though I wouldn’t be mad at that) I hope this inevitably eventually gets us a few more day 2 picks and we dump those 7th and maybe even 6th rounder in the process. We need impact players not roster fillers and even our depth is fairly solid.

There are multiple valuable DE, DB, LB, WR, RB, and TE that are 2nd & 3rd rounders that can easily contribute and even start for us. Then some decent depth fillers maybe left in the fourth. After that it’s just a few hidden gems as usual. If we are win now and will pick bottom of next draft then let’s start making moves and getting the finishing touches to fill out this roster.

At this point everyone has just about said next year be damned if we get a sb so grab some damn playmakers and let’s go!

  26. adam from ny Says:

hey let’s just imagine tonight never happened……and we have the first pick in the draft tomorrow…

a really great gm might think that way…

and lichtie is a really good gm

    🙂

  27. Mikejp Says:

How were the 4th and 6th round picks contributing to the Bucs last year? Almost nothing, right?

  28. Joe in Michigan Says:

Would you be happy if the Bucs took Logan Hall with the 33rd pick? This guy reminds me of Will Gholston, I love Gholston, but I believe the Bucs could possibly find a guy like that in the 3rd or 4th Round.

    Hall: 6′ 6″, 283, 4.88 40 time
    Gholston: 6′ 6″, 281, 4.96 40 time (when drafted)

  29. Red-sparrow Says:

Uh, Licht hasn’t even made any picks yet. Thank you for criticizing something you know nothing about. Drafts are more than just one day.

  33. David From Winter Park Says:

Once again, just like in 2018, J. Licht is moving the chess pieces (Draft Picks). In today’s NFL, Teams will move out if the 1st Round (High Cap Money) for impact players in 2nd, 3rd and 4th Round with the same quality players with a lower Cap hit latter down the line.It payed off in 2018 for light with the 3 2nd Rounders, and it looks like Licht’s gonna do it again. Don’t be surprised if Licht trades the 33 pick for a 2 for a 3rd and a 4th. That how the winning teams like Seattle, NE, SF, Balt and The Eagles been doing it for years, and now the Bucs Front Office are
doing it as well.. Bucs may move down 10 spots in the 2nd Round and still get the player they rated in the 1st round (27th). This a deep draft in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Round. I trust Licht, with BA giving his 2 Cents more than the Mel Kiper’s of the world. GO BUCS 😀❗

  34. steele Says:

I think they did ok. Many great options to come, including edge, DT, secondary and OL. All they did was pass on Wyatt, Dax Hill and Cine. They might have moved up a slot to get Jermaine Johnson, but there are more choices to come, and an extra pick is great.

    Treat tomorrow as day one.

  35. August 1976 Buc Says:

Trading out of the first round was definitely influenced with cash on hand, to pay the draftees and FA’s they will sign- Gronk and or Suh. The draft is always a crapshoot no matter how great talent evaluators are, because these are human beings being drafted, not machines.

I’m not sure that’s their logic.

They need defense this year and moving forward.

I wouldn’t be upset with Watson… but we’re going to have to draft DL at some point. Sooner rather than later and that has nothing to do with Brady.

  38. adam from ny Says:

    i’d go offense at 33…wr or rb…

    and d-line at 60 and 106

    ol or te at 91

  39. David Says:

I keep seeing comments about late round picks not making it. What you are failing to realize is the 4th rounder we got is essentially a 3rd round level talent as this is the first pick in the 4th round. There are plenty of players in the top 3 rounds that are every day starters.

  40. adam from ny Says:

we haven’t had much luck with clemson picks over the years…

so might be best to pass on booth at 33

  41. Trey Long Says:

Draft is a crap shoot. 50% of first round picks don’t get a second contract. Nobody knows who’s going to be great, stay healthy, and have a long career.

  42. Defense Rules Says:

Look at who we passed on by moving down 6 places (to #33 in the 2nd Rnd) to gain an extra 4th Rnd pick (#106) …

    #27 – Devin Lloyd (ILB – Utah)
    #28 – Devonte Wyatt (DT – Georgia)
    #29 – Cole Strange (OL – Chattanooga)
    #30 – George Karlaftis (Edge – Purdue)
    #31 – Daxton Hill (CB – Michigan)
    #32 – Lewis Cine (S – Georgia)

Every one of those picks SHOULD start in the NFL as rookies (but still you never know). Every one of those positions was a position of need for the Bucs IMO DT, Edge & ILB more-so). And every one (except Strange) was most likely the top prospect at his position available when selected.

Bottom line: JL passed on some very very good POTENTIAL players. However, none of them may have fit what we were looking for at those positions for various reasons. Whether the trade was smart or not will depend on what we do TONIGHT. Several prospects still intrigue me:

o Andrew Booth (CB – Clemson)
o Roger McCreary (CB – Auburn)
o Nakobe Dean (LB – Georgia)
o Christian Harris (LB – Bama)
o Boye Mafe (Edge – Minnesota)
o Arnold Ebiketie (Edge – Penn State)
o Nik Bonitto (Edge – Oklahoma)
o David Ojabo (Edge – Michigan)
o Travis Jones (DT – UConn)
o Logan Hall (DT – Houston)
o Perrion Winfrey (DT – Oklahoma)
o Phidarian Mathis (DT – Bama)
o Trey McBride (TE – Colorado State)

We picked…A PICK!!! Yay! I missed nothing!

It is interesting to see who WAS picked from 27-32. Some good players, BUT, were they guys we wanted? There will be plenty of second-guessing and Nostradamus-like hindsight in years to come. Lets hope we get our guy, the right guy.

  48. Rott3n Amiigo 94 Says:

I’m in on Travis Jones DT or Andrew Booth DB

  49. ModHairKen Says:

Don’t be surprised to see them trade this pick. Every time overnight is assessing the players left. Every team that is in love with a guy they can’t believe is still there will be looking to package a deal to move into day two, pick one.

  50. Bucaroo Says:

It’s great to get such a haul of quality picks merely for trading down a few spots. I was originally against trading down, but this deal with the Jags was too good to pass up. Don’t mess it up! LFG!

  51. Brandon Says:

1st pick in 4th and 6th are basically 3rd and 5ty rounders. Moving from pick 32 to 33 by itself is worth a 6th due to losing the 5th year option on a rookie contract. Just in terms of moving back, we won the trade but factor in losing the 5th year option it makes it more even. Unless of course, the Bucs didn’t care for anyone enough to handover a rookie 1st round contract. Enough about Wyatt. The Bucs didn’t want him. End of story. He was there, there was enough there they didn’t like to get away from him.

  52. BucEmUp Says:

I agree with pryda, we use the extra picks to move back up again and if they didnt have the money to sign a first round pick its the right move.Licht loves to trade

  53. Bigz Says:

We still have 0 pass rush. We knew Johnson would go soon. Needed to move up 2 or 3 spots. Then we passed on the DE from Purdue. Move out of 1 for 4 and 6 rounders. Not a good move.

  54. Ash Says:

Feel like the bucs fleeced the jags and it will be Logan Hall and maybe McBride in the second if mcbride makes it to later in the second round. I don’t think money had anything to do with the trade back them not having a 5 and 6 had alot to do with the trade back. They have alot of depth pieces and rotational pieces to draft still alot of good talent left and I think the good value for this draft is in rounds 2 through 4 fantastic trade didn’t think they would trade down glad they did for more picks.

  55. Guzzie Says:

Trade shocker Giants move up to 33 for QB give Bucs extra 3rd

Might be able to get something with Chicago or the Seahawks for the first pick tonight, hopefully they both covet someone still on the board . They both have 2 second round picks

  58. MadMax Says:

Top of the 2nd, (then our 2nd and 3rd) top of the 4th (then our 4th), and top of 6th….oh this is gonna get very interesting!

I got friggn hammered last night….dont even remember walkin home lol, im 50 seconds away from my go to spot.

  59. emo Says:

Do you really think that a fourth-rounder, second rounder, and sixth rounder was worth passing Devonte Wyatt? I really doubt it. He even fell all the way to us. Bad trade.

  60. TDTB Says:

I was shocked the Bucs didn’t trade with NE to grab Johnson. That seemed like a no-brainer. Then taking a trade over Wyatt was shocking. I don’t see players that are less likely busts at positions of need at 33 than those two. That said, why is nobody considering the possibility of taking Willis. Brady retired a few weeks ago and the resigning of two additional quarterbacks suggests to me that Trask isn’t the answer the Bucs had hoped for. I would have preferred immediate high impact players now that we’re here why not take best value.

  61. Beeej Says:

More picks mean it’s more likely we can get McBride, I like it

  62. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You have to consider that the picks are at the very top of the 2nd, 4th & 6th…….that means quite a bit…..and 2 of the picks…2nd & 4th are the first of that day of the draft….so plenty of time to consider player or another trade.

Knowing Licht….we will use the 4th or 6th to trade up for a player he likes….

And….I’m starting to get a feeling that Darden may end up surprising.

  63. Dooley Says:

Bucs won. Slide back 6 spots in exchange for 2 extra picks. That’s 3 players instead of 1 guy at 27. I’m starting to think the “we see alot of value in the middle rounds” at Lichts’ presser was basically “we’re open to a deal” to the rest of the league.

    How were the Bucs “fleeced”?

    ^^^^^^^^^

I don’t expect a swashbuckling Amway sales pro ( Amway is headquartered in Michigan…and Joe knows a fella can get rich off of laundry soap ) to realize a bad deal when he sees one. Time will tell if those day 3 picks even make the team…meanwhile…the Bucs have never been in more of a “win now” mode. Starters were on the board at 27…let’s see what 33 brings.

  65. BUCman Says:

Passing on Wyatt was a huge mistake! The drop off to any of the remaining DT’s is massive and that was our biggest need! Please don’t select Logan Hall. He will be just an average player at best in the NFL. The extra picks they got will end up as practice squad players so what was really gained. Remember, there are a dozen compensatory picks added to the end of the 3rd round so that top of the 4th pick is more like the middle of the 4th.

  66. MadMax Says:

Ok. im an hour awake and a monster energy drink in and im still digesting this….good thing im off work today.

  67. Beeej Says:

  68. PassingThru Says:

It was an excellent trade, first pick on Day 2 and Day 3. It doesn’t get more strategic than that. You have plenty of time to field phone calls from other GMs and take advantage of their fears and infatuations. You also have 24 hours apiece to study your own film on the Best of the Rest before Day 2 and Day 3.

    I love it.

  69. Anonymous Says:

  70. Bucamania Says:

Nakobe Dean or Arnold Ebeketie for me.

  71. Defense Rules Says:

BUCman … I wasn’t enthralled with Wyatt, but we definitely NEED to draft a starter-capable DT and he was the best available when we were supposed to pick. Ndamukong Suh’s price just went up quite a bit because of our trade down. And although drafting for the future appears to be a no-no to Joe, we’ve boxed ourselves in quite a bit for 2023 & beyond. Joe must have some inside info that Swaggy Baker is planning a comeback & is looking to get a ring with the Bucs.

  72. Defense Rules Says:

PassingThru … Whether or not it was an excellent deal will depend on what we do with that extra pick (ultimately we only ended up with 1 extra, since the other additional pick was a comp pick).

There’s a lot of talent still available, and we still have quite a few needs, especially on defense. Bucs’ D over-performed last season IMO given our injury list, but we’ll have a much harder time this year I suspect based on a tougher schedule alone. Personally I’d say that if we rank in the middle teens at the end of the year we’ll have done quite well. And given our lack of depth on defense, we could rank much lower than that if the injury bug reappears.

    Tonight (Rnds 2 & 3) is a make-or-break night for the Bucs.

  73. Joe in Michigan Says:

Winny: A guy who assumes I work at a place because he heard it was in Michigan is the same guy who judges a trade before he even knows who the Bucs draft in said trade.

  74. Craig Says:

There are still several very serviceable D line guys hanging around. If Licht has found another gem of an )-line guy, round 2 might be perfect.

DBs from the later rounds seem to want to play more than some early rounders. Great possibilities there too.

I would say the Bucs have the edge on winning the trade.

I usually agree with you a lot. Yes as smart as Suh is, not sure that he would say that if Devonte Wyatt was drafted, he only wants 5 million for the season but somehow if Travis Jones, Logan Hall, Perrion Winfrey or Phidarian Mathis is drafted they are not starter capable and he wants 8 million a year.

  76. geno711 Says:

  77. PassingThru Says:

    @Defense Rules

I classify a trade differently. It was a smart, strategic move given the tier of available draft talent. That’s what I’m grading. Strategy.

The players Licht drafts are assigned a separate grade. If he drafts a bust, it’s a poor drafting decision grade.

    1st pick in 4th and 6th are basically 3rd and 5ty rounders.

    ———–

I wish people would stop saying that and put some thought into things.

At the end of the 3rd, there are 9 comp picks. The Bucs 4th rounder is not ‘basically a 3rd’, it’s 10 picks into the 4th round, or a mid-4th round pick.

The 6th rounder is much worse, there are are a total of 19 comp picks before that top of the 6th rounder, that’s basically a late 6th rounder, not ‘basically a 5th’.

  80. Anonymous Says:

He’ll trade that 33 for at least 2 more picks. Watch. IDK why people don’t trust his ability to get the absolute most bang for his buck, at this point… Deep roster, and we CAN afford late picks toward building after this year, which is going to be as critical as anything he could have gotten without trading.

  81. Power of Pewter Says:

I presume Jax got the guy they wanted, so it’s a win for them. Can’t rate the Bucs until they use their pick. If one of a group they were targeting is still there, then it’s a win for the Bucs also. If Licht uses to pick to draft a kicker, then the Bucs wasted a pick.

Winny: A guy who assumes I work at a place because he heard it was in Michigan is the same guy who judges a trade before he even knows who the Bucs draft in said trade.

Amway Joe…I read your argument that this was a great trade and watched your video about “being my own boss” and “unlimited earning potential”. They both stink. I stand by my opinion that trading down when you’ve never been in such a short window of opportunity is a bad idea. Just like joining Amway “downstream”.

Geno711 … Suh’s his own agent. Negotiations are almost always about leverage.

  84. Joe in Michigan Says:

    Whiny Winny:
We’ll see in about 4 years how this trade worked out.
    Sincerely,
    Amway Joe

  85. geno711 Says:

    @Defense

I knew Suh was his own agent.

I will agree with Suh having leverage if we do not take an interior defensive lineman until later or not at all. I disagree with Suh having leverage if we take any interior defensive lineman in the 2nd round.

If anybody thinks the Bucs 2022 season might fall apart because they traded down 6 spots in the draft, they’re being illogical.

  87. Winny Testaverde Says:

Amway Joe predicts that 6th round pick the Bucs stole from The Jags will be the next Brady and/or Ryan Jensen. Now that he mentions it…I agree! Amway Joe knows…the season is indeed salvageable. You go, Amway Joe…you go!

Thank you, your constant whining has solved most of the world’s problems. Kepp up the great work, Whiny Winny!

The winner of this thread…hands and jean shorts down…is Amway Joe. His ability to debate while keeping his signature “can-do” attitude is admirable. I congratulate Flint’s finest football mind on taking several of us…me included of course…down to Mo-Town. His knowledge is unmatched, his tough talking ways are untouched. We salute you, Amway Joe! You’re winning…I’m whining.

  91. Joe in Michigan Says:

Winny: Admitting it is the first step. Thank you for your courage!
