Todd Bowles Went “Haywire” With Jets Because Jets Are “Haywire”

April 10th, 2022

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

People who traffic in the NFL believe Todd Bowles will do just fine running the Bucs because he actually had a winning season with the Jets.

The Jets are such a dysfunctional outfit that many in the NFL don’t believe any coach should be crucified for not succeeding with them. (Interestingly, you never hear this said about Adam Gase.)

Add heavy metal head-banging Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports to this list of folks propping up Bowles despite three consecutive losing seasons in New York.

Recently, La Canfora discussed Bowles and said the transition to Bowles from former Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians appeared imminent two years ago.

“Todd Bowles is more than a deserving head coach,” La Canfora said. “We’ve seen him have success with the Jets under duress and then things went a little haywire there. It’s the Jets. Things always go haywire.

“A lot of people close to Bruce Arians believed this transition was coming leading into their Super Bowl appearance a couple of years ago. There is a lot of people who know Bruce Arians well felt like win or lose, he was going to decide during a long offseason to hand the reigns off to Todd Bowles because the team would be in great stead and because Bruce Arians had been dealing with health issues for a long time.

“And, you know, [Arians] was going to change his lifestyle and get out of this coaching rat race sooner rather than later.”

Recent video of Arians answering questions about Tom Brady during his west coast golf tour/draft research prep shows Arians appearing nearly five years younger than he looked at the combine six weeks ago. His new front-office consultant job really seems to fit Arians nicely.

As for Bowles, Joe guesses any coach who somehow got his team to a winning record with rotten Ryan Fitzpatrick as his quarterback must have had an idea what he is doing.

Adam Gase was absolutely insane. He got lucky with an over achieving Dolphins team. I have a friend who’s a huge Manning fan and he said during his tenure in Denver, Manning constantly audibled and ignored Gase. Basically, Gase road the coattails of Manning’s success which got him two jos. Only the Jets were stupid enough to hire him to try to save Darnold. Look at Tannehil in Tennessee, yes lately he has stunk, but overall his time in Ten has been much better than his time in Miami, by a long shot. So again, Gase stinks, Jets dumb. Bowles will do just fine. We’ll just have to see how he does once Brady is no longer in a Bucs jersey.

  2. Bird Says:

    Lions /Jets / jags/ texans

Im sure players dont really want to play there unless they see the benjamins

  3. Proud Bucs Fan Says:

Bucs were haywire, until The Don Brady chose the Bucs as the team that he would play for.

  4. Allbuccedup Says:

When Brady leaves that’s when you judge the head coach. If the organization is smart they should be laying a foundation for this team when Brady retires. But I don’t think Gabbert and Griffin are very good building blocks.

  5. geno711 Says:

Last year unrelated to Brady, some stats on Bucs defense.

Points against – 5th in the league.
Penalties against – 1st in the league.
Take aways – 5th in the league.
Yards allowed per play – 10th in the league.
Percentage of drives ending in score – 6th in the league.

    —–

Number of boring comments from their defensive coordinator – 1st in the league.

  6. ModHairKen Says:

Dang, Joe, yesterday it was thank God Richard Sherman is gone, and today its rotten Ryan Fitzpatrick. Take your medicines, Joe.

    Lol @ mod

  8. Listnfrmafar Says:

Geno, just curious where we’re they on preventing 3rd down conversations? All this means nothing, Gase isn’t coaching a potential 2022 SB contender. I believe Ryan was the last successful Jets coach. Why did BA say he excited to come back and getting more involved in the play calling? Brady unretires and BA’s excitement goes away so he retires? Maybe there was not in season riff and Brady’s contingency was he has final say in the offense and that didn’t work for BS, I mean BA. Bowles will have his chance, he’s close to another loaded team. I’d love to see Bucs destroy the Rams then you’ll know BA was the distraction.

  9. Dooley Says:

TBH the Jets have stained plenty of resumes since the turn of the century, and they still stink.

  10. geno711 Says:

    @Listnfrmafar

Plenty of area’s the Buc’s defense can improve. Esp. against Cooper Kupp.

I just do not buy into the narrative that our defense was bad last year.

  11. Joseph Mamma Says:

I think we made a better choice for head coach than the Texans. That’s about all I can be sure of.

  12. Alanbucsfan Says:

Many fans forget how much Bucs D had injury bug in 2021
    Murphy-Bunting missed 2 1/2 months
    Davis Jr missed 2 months
JPP had a rotator cuff and was ineffective much of year
D White had a quad injury that limited his effectiveness much of season
L David missed the last 2 reg season games
    J Whitehead missed 3 games
R Sherman was only available for 5 games
All teams have to deal with injuries but Bucs D had more than their fair share last year.

  13. LakelandSteve Says:

Unfortunately for Bowles as soon as the bills come due on these contracts that the Bucs have kicked down the road the Bucs may have to unload some pretty good players. That won’t happen until Brady is gone. Hopefully the Glazers will give Bowles a chance to ride it out and rebuild the roster. We shall see then what kind of coach Bowles is.

  14. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

LOL, Yes, Arians “appeared up to 5 years younger” because he was doing what he loves to do, talking Sh!t about Tom Brady.
He just had to throw Shade at Tom Brady, by saying that Brady got too much credit for the Bucs turnaround, and his buddy Leftwich did not get enough.

  15. D-Rome Says:

Dang, Joe, yesterday it was thank God Richard Sherman is gone, and today its rotten Ryan Fitzpatrick. Take your medicines, Joe.

Unreasonable Joe hates that Ryan Fitzpatrick was better than Jay-Miss in 2018 by just about every statistical measure.

  16. BUCman Says:

Joseph mamma……… 😂 It would be impossible to make a worse choice for head coach than the Texans did!

  17. Beeej Says:

Bucs were a HUGELY better team after BA’s first season here. A couple easily-made field goals, we’d have been 9-7 instead of 7-9, even with the 30 picks

  18. Red-sparrow Says:

    @geno711

Those defensive numbers are a reflection of the mediocre list of offenses/quarterbacks that they played last year. Dont kid yourself, this defense was mediocre when it counted against the best teams. The offense was the strength of this team and has been for 2 seasons now.

  19. Samuel Says:

@ Joseph mamma says; your comment reeks of subtle bigotry . What exactly did you mean about Todd bowles being better than texans new coach(another black) asyour only fact or endorsement. Coaches shouldn’t be compared on basis of race &you just also implied that the other30 coaches in the NFL were categorically better thanbowles: there are horrible coaches in that list i.e. Panthers coach & coaches without experience. FINALLY TEXANS NEW COACH NEWCOACH TOOK A BEARS TEAM TO THE SUPERBOWL. STOP IT WITH THESE COMMENTS & DEEPER UNDERLING RACIAL TOXICITY

  20. Defense Rules Says:

Red-sparrow … Yes the offense has been the strength of the team, as we should expect when they get the lion’s share of the salary CAP. But even they were inconsistent at various times in the season (as we saw in virtually all but one of our losses & even in a couple of our wins?).

Our defense’s major problem was that they were even more inconsistent, and especially when the injury bug took out more than one key players. Defense lacked DEPTH, and that’s the kiss of death IMO when injuries start piling up in specific position groups. How many games did we see opponents continually bombard our Secondary because of the subs we had on the field. Isn’t that how lions cull the herd by going after the weakest & slowest gazelle?

He just had to throw Shade at Tom Brady, by saying that Brady got too much credit for the Bucs turnaround, and his buddy Leftwich did not get enough.

If you read the comments he made, in context, it’s clear he was touting Leftwich, not slighting Brady. There was no “shade” thrown. Yet people who want to hate Arians keep promoting this nonsense. If Brady is offended by that comment, he’s a sociopath.

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Lions /Jets / jags/ texans…Bucs until BA got here.

Why must we try and parse the credit down to actual numbers as in eg..Brady gets 80% and TL gets 10% and BA gets 10%.

That’s not how life works! So some simple facts. I think Joe is the only person including posters like me who give Todd Licht enough props.

Watch the dominoes here…Without Licht BA would not have been here. Without Licht and BA Brady would not have been here. They ALL had a part to play in the historic turnaround of a franchise that rivaled those others as WORST in the league. From worst to first and folks here want to give ALL the credit to one guy.

BA had the team turned around for a winning record his first year here. JW at least was not as scatter armed as Freeman but he was a scatter brained as any QB in the league. He was used to getting by on his superior talent…good in college on an FSU team full of future NFL types and competition in only a few games a year. In the NFL EVERY week is a competition and talent levels are off the charts. Fameis has talent and if somebody gets him into perhaps ‘Mindfulness” or “Meditation” he MAY get his scatter brain under control and develop some discipline. He SEEMS to be on that trail at last.

Meanwhile BA was only a QB away from the playoffs. I’m sure he didn’t want to turn over the “Fameis problem” to Bowles. I think he felt the same way about Gabbert and Trask. He wanted Bowles to have a much better chance. Brady came back….Licht was masterful in the offseason…and barring injuries Bowles should at least make the playoffs.

  23. Allbuccedup Says:

Lovie will be one and done with the Texans and they will make Sean Payton an offer in 2023 unless Dallas cleans house again and beats them out.

  24. SB Says:

Samuel. You are reaching there bud. Maybe it is people like you who are the underlying problem.

  25. Mike C Says:

Yeah Samuel, you do know the Texans head coach was our (Terrible) coach for many years here? Not EVERYTHING is race related.

  26. GOB Says:

The year before bowles took the HC job, the Jets ranked sixth in total defense. The next season under bowles, they ranked fourth. The defense wasn’t the problem. Bowles also improved the Cardinals and bucs defenses. The question about bowles, for me anyway, is the lack of situational awareness, and game planning. The Rams were destroying the bucs vs. the blitz, and Stafford is a historically great against it. Bowles has a little too much “we do what we do, stop it” mentality. Stafford historically struggles most, when asked to throw against seven in coverage.

  27. Goatfarmer Says:

I wonder how many times Bowles blew a tie game in the last 30 seconds when he was with the Jets?

  28. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Sasquatch

Wake up and smell your own BS…

The only reason Tom Brady returned from retirement was because BA was forced out…

Duh… Amazing timing on the whole situation.

    Don’t ya think?

  29. Cleanhouse Says:

Maybe give Fitz some credit, stop being a hater

  30. SB Says:

@Cleanhouse……….Joe will never give credit to a guy with Harvard degree that made more money in 15 years than Joe ever will while playing a GAME.
Then after he hangs his cleats up he will start a business and make three times that at least! I Envy Fitz rather than being jealous of him.

  31. GOB Says:

Joe has a hard enough job fending off the truth, without you guys pilling on. Marine buc speaks the truth. If you believe all this BA Brady stuff was made up, you probably believe OJ didn’t murder his wife.

  32. Goatfarmer Says:

Goober, you and ProudButt should shack up.

  33. Tye Says:

This is a show me league.. Todd’s last HC gig was a bust…
He’s a failed HC until he proven different…
Brady will help this year but the net year for Todd will be telling!
