Todd Bowles Talks Tom Brady, New Tasks And Trying To Work At An NBA Game

April 5th, 2022

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

Bucs coach Todd Bowles says the only stat he is worried about is the number in the wins column. And he said his quarterback, Tom Brady, is right along with him.

Bowles earlier this week hopped on the Adam Schefter Podcast and didn’t really reveal anything mind-blowing, but he did pull back the curtain a bit on the relationship he has with Brady. Bowles doesn’t sound like he’s all that interested in Brady’s stats except for wins. And he claims Brady is right there with him.

Bowles said he doesn’t care if the Bucs score 60 points or 6 points as long as the game ends in a victory. And Brady agrees with him, he said.

“We both want to win and we don’t care how we win,” Bowles said.

He and Brady began developing a relationship when Brady first came to the Bucs. And Bowles said it is not unusual for him to pick Brady’s brain on the practice field to get an idea of what quarterbacks are looking at against the Bucs’ defense. Bowles said Brady has been a tremendous help that way.

“He is a heckuva teammate,” Bowles said.

Bowles said when Arians first told him he was stepping down he didn’t get the full story and was truly worried something was physically wrong with Arians. Bowles didn’t fly back immediately from Charlotte (he stopped there on his way home from visiting his son who plays for former Bucs commander Greg Schiano at Rutgers).

Bowles owns a home in Charlotte and was inspecting his house. He would have flown straight back to Tampa that evening but he had floor seats for a Hornets game and left the next day. Bowles also said Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht called him at the Hornets game a few times and Bowles couldn’t hear him well over the racket.

Bowles said he had to hit the ground running as new Bucs coach. He’s not yet moved into Arians’ office. When Bowles spoke with Schefter, it was the first day the 30 draft prospects could visit One Buc Palace. Bowles was knee-deep in planning and scheduling for the Bucs’ game in Germany this fall.

(This suggests to Joe the Bucs already know the date of the Munich game.)

Bowles said the key for his transition to head coach is not to bite off more than he can chew as his plate is very full.

“Make sure I don’t try to build Rome in a day,” Bowles said.

Bowles said the good thing about his new title is he knows every coach, every player and everyone in the building already.

“I’ve been here three years and I’ve gotten to know a lot of the players and I know all the coaches,” Bowles said. “It is a new job but feels like an old job.”

    Cool story, good luck coach!

So far it really looks to be a seamless transition. No massive learning curve, trying to learn your players, bringing in coaches that really have not worked together much. It is the best possible situation for T Bowles to walk in to. But you still have to play the games. Time will tell all.

    GO BUCS!!!!!

Coach Bowles is in a perfect situation that is to win now as long as Mr Brady with us and if Trask is our future he gains invaluable training and when he starts will serve him well

Bowels comment about building rome in a day are a little concerning. Sounds like he wants to make a lot of changes. Only thing that needs to change coach is get your offense to start faster n fix our defense. This rome is already built it just needs some fine tuning

  5. BucUToo Says:

So glad that he didn’t end up signing somewhere else. Having some continuity in between a coaching change is rare. Usually when there is a coaching change they bring in all of their own assistant coaches and training staff. Todd already has his here. Now if we can just keep Byron as the OC maybe Brady does come back for another year. LFG!! TB & TB in TB baby!

Game planning for Munich already…..sounds like we will have a very early bye week.

Not really, he is going from focusing on the Defense to being a head coach again. That is a lot of different things to be thinking about, 1 thing is all the media he will deal with as a head coach, that he has not had to deal with as D Coordinator, with one weekly press conference and many other things he is now doing that he has not in the last 3 years. T Bowles will do well.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  8. DEEEMO Says:

LFG….Bowels will do just fine. Can’t wait for the Draft!!!!!!!

  9. JGhotier Says:

Does Todd Bowles remind anyone ejse of Major Payne when he speaks? 🤷‍♂️ Like I wanna hear him tell “The Little Engine That Could” story….

    Maybe that’s just me though!

    Not gameplanning. Scheduling.

  11. rashad brown Says:

I saw a guy who favored Bowles at that game. But I told myself there was no way he would be at a Hornets game.

  12. Mike Johnson Says:

Concentrate on our sometimes good sometimes bad defense Bowles. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars last year. Besides, Brady already has enough toys.

  13. Locked In Says:

“Make sure I don’t try to build Rome in a day,” Bowles said.”

Rome is already built, just don’t burn it down.

  14. Bush's Coke Spoon Says:

If Bowles is going to be a more hands-on, involved head coach than Arians, I hope he eschews the weekly media interview tour that BA was addicted to. To paraphrase Brady, there’s no time for hitting the movie theatre.

In the lingo of said theatre: Break a leg, Todd! Go Bucs!!

  15. D-Rok Says:

    @JGhotier,

That’s hilarious! I haven’t seen that movie in ages but it’s a great one – and great reference by you.

  16. TampabayDJ82 Says:

How about we all have some dang faith in the man !! I mean most of you were saying how much you hated BA and now you’re already finding every little thing to dissect about Todd Bowels ? What’s it gonna be ? I’m just glad we have our coaching staff in place for the next few years !! Give the man a chance… Go Bucs
