Andrew Booth And The Bucs

April 5th, 2022

Clemson cornerback Andrew Booth.

If the Bucs draft an offensive skill position player with a premium pick at No. 27 overall later this month, Joe would not be surprised one bit.

Why? Well, until last week the Bucs had an offensive guy as head coach, Bucco Bruce Arians. Oh yeah, another reason would be, you know, Tom Brady.

Joe wonders how much that might change now that a defensive guy is head coach? Last week Arians resigned and Team Glazer promoted defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

Personally, Joe would draft a cornerback over a defensive tackle at No. 27. Why? Look at the salary cap situation. It’s not pretty for the Bucs.

Starting corners Jamel Dean and Sean Murphy-Bunting are in the final year of their contracts. Both will be looking for a hefty raise and may get those offers somewhere. Could the Bucs afford to keep both?

If the Bucs draft a corner at No. 27, that would provide depth and allow the team to groom a guy for a year so he will be ready to rock and roll in 2023, or he turns out to be better than Dean of SMB now. Then, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and Bowles won’t have to cough up valuable Team Glazer loot for two free agent corners, maybe only one.

A guy that caught Joe’s eye is Andrew Booth of Clemson. He played in big games as a junior so he’s battle tested. But you know what impressed Joe most? He tackles. Just watch in the video below all the open field tackles this Booth makes.

At times (especially against the Rams in the playoffs), cornerback tackling by the Bucs was just downright poor. Joe doesn’t believe that will be an issue for Booth.

It’s refreshing to see a young defensive back tackle like he does.

Helmethair Mel Kiper and Todd McShay each rank Booth as their No. 4 corner in the draft.

You know they will address the secondary, hopefully they hit on the choices made.
You would think at least 2 draft picks will be used on the secondary. Time will tell

    GO BUCS!!!!

  2. BuucccNASTY Says:

This kid looks like a baller, doubt he’d be there with our pick but would love it if he was. Would feel really good about him and Davis locking it down for the next 3 years

  3. David Says:

I just can’t possibly see them taking anything other than D line or DB in round one

  4. #8 Says:

    I concur.

  5. Infomeplease Says:

Booth is going to make some team very happy!!

  6. HC Grover Says:

Nice. He tackles good. Low and grabs the feet.

  7. StickinUp4Centers Says:

Zyon McCollum is an interesting mid-round pick. All the size and speed a team could desire and a ball hawk. Played at a small school so he might need some time to acclimate to higher competition. Fortunately, the Bucs have some depth at CB where he wouldn’t have to be forced into starting.

  8. ViSyl Says:

    This guy seems good!

  9. D Smith Says:

No Ira Kaufman podcasts in over a week, since coaching change???

  10. Bird Says:

Edge rusher and corner are two positions that have most talent in this draft

I agree joe on corners and being free agents next year. Would be cool with this if he is there He did have injuries in college is only reason he would fall in draft

  11. StickinUp4Centers Says:

Joshua Williams is another small school guy with high upside that can be had in later rounds.

Jaylin Armor-Davis is an interesting mid-round guy. Great measurables and played at Alabama, so he is used to elite competition.

  12. Bucs since 76 Says:

A defensive tackle to replace Suh seems like the more pressing need for this year. Unless the one they want is gone then DB or OG.

  13. Bobby M. Says:

Curious if there’s a CB out there that can return kicks/punts….we need players at both positions, makes no sense to draft another WR. Got to be someone with those skills.

  14. Robert Says:

good instincts. we need DL more though….especially in a small window for SB.

  15. Coburn Says:

I feel like others dline has to come first. We are paper thin there. Def corner after though

  16. Bird Says:

    Kid can literally fly

  17. LakelandSteve Says:

Damn, that kid can tackle, cover and has some ball skills

  18. Joe Says:

Curious if there’s a CB out there that can return kicks/punts…

Sure. Question is, what does Todd Bowles think about Darden? Remember, Arians isn’t gone.

we need players at both positions, makes no sense to draft another WR.

Might want to tip off Tom Brady. He’s still calling Julio Jones. Joe would take Olave over Julio Jones in a heartbeat (remember, we are in 2022 not 2016.) And remember, the best way to keep Tom Brady is to make Tom Brady happy.

  19. Bruce Blahak Says:

hernia surgery for booth i believe…pass

  20. BUCman Says:

Agree Joe! Defensive Back should be a high priority as should interior Defensive line. There are very few interior Defensive lineman worthy of a first round pick and they could be gone by 27. There is higher probability that a Defensive back worthy of the first round is available at 27. Don’t think Booth will be there at 27 but would be great if he is.

  21. sasquatch Says:

If it’s about next year’s cap, we still have to go DT.

J03 apparently forgets that Gholston is on a 1 year deal and if Suh re-signs it will likely only be a one year deal… So we will once again be in the position of replacing 2 of our 3 D-linemen next year… How is that not worse than replacing a CB? At least we have 1 starting CB under contract for next year.

Furthermore, if it’s not a deep year for DTs, then the best bet is to get your guy as early as possible.

I would be totally on board with round 1 DT and round 2 CB. Beyond that SS, TE, and RB.

  22. Tony Says:

I don’t want them to draft anybody out of Clemson or Ohio St. They never have luck with Clemson (Bowers & Adams) & half the players from Ohio St. seem to struggle in the NFL once they come out of college. Sure they’ve gotten better over the last couple of years (Nick & Joey, Thomas, Elliott, Chase, etc.) but alot of them that come out of there always seem to struggle in the NFL.

  23. jimm Says:

wirh all thetackles, i’m not sure there was a wrapup in the bunch …semed like mostly diving at calves

  24. Steven007 Says:

Bruce, that’s a minor surgery. He’ll be back to full strength in a few weeks.

  25. Joe Says:

There is higher probability that a Defensive back worthy of the first round is available at 27.

Very good value for DTs in middle rounds.

  26. Dooley Says:

Joe you’re forgetting Brady isnt the rookie whisperer and is known to keep younger guys on the depth chart on a shorter leash in terms of snaps & targets. Nothing about what our front office has done the last 3 years makes me think they’d misappropriate a 1st rounder to pick a WR to play as the 4th, maybe 3rd WR option in an already crowded WR room.

Booth is a solid DB, but the defense Clemson run to what Bowles runs is going to come with a learning curve on top of the eventual “splat” against the rookie wall.

Lastly, pretty sure the tide turned against the Rams late in the 3rd qtr by a tackle that forced a fumble that was made by a CB we’ve already got on the roster.

  27. Bobby M. Says:

if you’re talking Julio Jones vs Tyler Johnson…..no brainer but I dont think that’s the same as a rookie. I think we’re in a position to take best available at D-line, CB, TE, RB or O-line.

  28. Biff Barker Says:

I firmly believe our first round pick is going to be a player who unexpectedly falls to us or we trade down.
I also firmly believe that all bets are off on draft day.

  29. Jmarkbuc Says:

Great tape. Kids a baller. Gets his freakin head around!

  30. Buc92’ Says:

Best corner in the draft to me , get em in the first & perrion Winfrey in the 2nd

    GoBucs!

  31. unbelievable Says:

Looks amazing in those highlights. Extremely aggressive.

Wouldn’t be mad about it. Not at all.

  32. RPK Says:

Pass Rush is more important than a rookie DB who might be a better tackler than Dean / Bunting.

If SHAQ is the only player who can consistently get a pass rush next year, the secondary will struggle. Any rookie DB we pick up will struggle.

  33. unbelievable Says:

    ^ That’s true.

We need pass rush help in the worst way possible.

  34. unbelievable Says:

But can’t rely on a rookie for that…

  35. JB Kickback Says:

    You don’t get it
Teams that draft for needs never win championships
You draft best available regardless of needs or you end up with someone who can’t play

  36. ClwJB Says:

Gotta believe the draft will largely dictate what vets we pursue that we haven’t yet – like Suh, JPP etc

As low as we pick you just don’t know how it will play out until it does – get the best available talent period and plug in with vets from there IMO

  37. Idahobucfan4life Says:

    Booth splashes on film.

  38. steele Says:

I agree with Joe on this one. Booth would be a fine pick. Although I am more concerned about pass rush, which absolutely must be addressed.

  39. steele Says:

How’s this for a board: First two picks are Arnold Ebikete (edge) and Andrew Booth (CB), followed by best pass rushing DT available–Travis Davis, DeMarvin Leal, John Ridgeway.

    This would make my day.

Sign one or two remaining D liners in free agency. Akiem Hicks, Calais, Jerry Hughes, Dunlap, Clowney or Suh (if he’s healthy).

    That would make my month.

  40. firethecannons Says:

I would like to see us trade down a handful of spots and get this guy

  41. Tony Says:

They should consider trading down a couple times. Especially when they only have five picks.

  42. Tony Says:

Yeah I think they’re gonna have to go secondary DE or DT because I’m getting a feeling Zion Johnson might be gone. Wouldn’t surprise me if NE took him with what they’ve been losing at OL. If he’s still there then yeah I think the Bucs probably take him.

  43. Tony Says:

Or maybe Tom can give Logan Mankins, Vince Wilfork, Richard Seymour, Willie Mcginest, Tedy Bruschi, Lawyer Milloy, Ty Law, Charles Woodson & Randy Moss a call & see if they wanna come out of retirement & play for them.

  44. BillyBucco Says:

Im actually one that hopes we draft a WR and score 45 points a game, but this kid is my favorite CB.
His passion about the game is evident.
He watches the play, not the player.
His ball skills are already better than the 3 CBs we have.
    He gets it.

I would not bat an eye if we get this dude.
If it wasn’t for being such a good corner, he would make a great FS.

Does that sound like a big layer Bowles could use?

Of course it does, but it doesn’t help Brady at all.

  45. steele Says:

BillyBucco, nothing helps Brady more than an overwhelming, stifling defense that smashes opposing offenses.
