Early Endorsement Of Buccaneers’ Cornerbacks

April 29th, 2022

Cornerback depth was an issue last season, and Joe is sure that Carlton Davis, Jamel Dean and Sean Murphy-Bunting wouldn’t say that they played their best ball in 2021.

But Bucs officials must be super confident in their Super Bowl cornerbacks if they didn’t draft in cornerback in Rounds 1 or 2.

Yes, the Bucs added veteran nickel/safety Logan Ryan, and they might snag a corner in Round 3 tonight. But Joe considers the Bucs drafting in the trenches with their first two picks to be an endorsement of the cornerbacks unit.

Dee Delaney scored quality experience at corner last season, Ross Cockrell is still around, and the beloved bottle of cologne, Pierre Desir, is still on the free agent market and available to be signed.

Joe just hopes/prays injuries don’t devastate the unit again this season, and that a summer of tackling practices helps tighten up that part of their games.

Delaney and Cockrell are awful! I still have nightmares about Delaney in the first Rams game. Cockrell was benched after the first Saints game.

  2. Bee Says:

    We still need DBs… badly

  3. PassingThru Says:

More like the Bucs had more pressing needs elsewhere, like finding a replacement for Suh and keeping their QB off a cart

  4. Yucs2Bucs Says:

So weak and let’s get ready for another season of watching guys out of position and getting burnt again ? We passed on Booth I guess because he’s to physical and he didn’t fit the soft profile, but we needed impact players that start on day one and please tell me did we achieve that so far ?? Umm negative ghost rider .. Dea and SMB again .. oh man !!! Go Bucs

  5. Leopold Stotch Says:

Coby Bryant and Smoke Monday are the only two I know that is be good with

  6. Guinness8 Says:

    We will go TE

  7. Pewter Power Says:

Secondary depth is a failure if cockrell makes this roster again. Desir is on the open market for a reason. I hope some kind of trade is coming.

  8. Bird Says:

Corner Tariq woolen with next pick

Then tight end to start 4th

  9. steele Says:

Yes, this is the problem. Secondary needs more upgrades besides Logan Ryan. Davis, Dean, SMB, Winfield….every player who laid the eggs vs. the Rams.

There are still some good corners lower down the board. Jaylen Armour Davis, Demarri Mathis, etc. PLEASE, LICHT. DEFENSE!!!!!!

  10. Francisco Guzman Says:

Still not sold on these guys. 🤦‍♂️

  11. steele Says:

PewterP, yes, all we can hope for is some very creative work in the mid-lower rounds.

In free agency, there are some CBs still out there, and they had better not bring back Desir. There are more FA safeties still not signed, including Tyrann Mathieu.

Barring that….pray very, very hard that this bunch suddenly improves. And that Bowles improves the schemes so these guys are not out of position every other danged play.

  12. steele Says:

It pains me to see the Bengals taking CB Martin Emerson at 68. That would have been a great pick for the Bucs. Congrats, no longer Bungles.

  13. sasquatch Says:

Not necessarily an endorsement… Just greater need for DL and value at that slot… And the O-line pick was I guess also deemed a greater need, and maybe they’re looking at a CB like Zyon McCollum in round 3.

  14. Buczilla Says:

I am discombobulated with our draft so far. We have one corner on our team worthy of a starting job and just pass on some damn good ones. Lol, I’m so p!ssed.

  15. David Says:

4 quality safeties and two, Logan & Edwards, possibly NEAL as well, can play slot. Dean and Davis are very good cornerbacks. Davis is on the verge of a pro bowl. SMB has to prove something still. Delaney showed a lot and is much better than people are giving him credit for. The dude is quick and instinctive.
Cockerell is nothing but a back up. Desir probably won’t be around.
I would not be surprised if they picked up another CB now or after the draft

  16. David Says:

People are trashing on Delaney? He was a rookie thrown into the mix because of injuries. He’s fast and quick and instinctive. He showed a lot of potential.
Desir hopefully will be gone. Cockerell is nothing but a back up. SMB still has more to prove. Dean is a real good CB. Davis is on the verge of a pro bowl.

Then there are four safeties and Edwards and Logan can both play slot. Neal can actually play slot as well.

I still think they draft a DB or at the very least sign one later.

But they’re much better than people give them credit for. They didn’t grow as much as we expected last year because they were all injured all year.

  17. sasquatch Says:

^^Well, you might wanna settle down. Licht knows what he’s doing. CB’s biggest problem last year was injuries. When they got healthy, they were better. Still some round 3 CBs who can probably play.

  18. steele Says:

Sasquatch, injuries wasn’t the main problem. It was lack of discipline, bad game planning (Bowles) and in case of Desir (etc) lack of talent. Toasting. How can Bowles and these guys stand what they did vs. the Rams?

  19. Bucsfan13 Says:

This “trust in Licht” mantra that some of you are pushing is bordering on North Korea type propaganda

  20. Yucs2Bucs Says:

Is Sleepy Joe Biden in charge of our board and picks ? One last year with Brady and we all know what kept us from the Super Bowl minus CG going down and the Lunatic leaving in the middle of the game. OUR DEFENSE!!! Poor LB play and Corners that were clueless and our first 3 picks won’t be day one starters and have yet to pick for major needs.. Tough CBs, LB, and Pass Rushers .. I’m shocked and I can’t be the only one, but just like the last two plays against the Mams this draft is making me scratch my head !!! Go Bucs and if they don’t pick a CB or LB I will go out on a limb and say this could turn out to be one of the worst. Yes it’s a crapshoot, but to pass on Booth and other impact players that could start day one leaves a very bad taste in this Buc fans mouth . Nite

  21. dmatt Says:

We missed out on cb Booth out of Clemson. SMB n JDean are not the answer. Slow to react n passive tacklers.

  22. Jerry Says:

    steele,
If Bowles and his scheme is the problem, then it doesn’t matter if we draft a CB or not. Because that scheme isn’t changing.

  23. Buczilla Says:

Naw, no need to settle down sasquatch when it’s obvious to a fan like me, not a football professional that every single one of our corners are injury prone and only one (Davis) is worth a damn. Maybe Licht has a master plan to trade for a decent corner? I have no idea, but going into this season with the mostly bums we had at corner last year is madness.

  24. steele Says:

Cockrell, Delaney, Desir are awful. But the rest of them were awful at various times throughout, and they ALL played poorly vs. the Rams. Both because of Bowles and because of their individual performances. We can hope that Logan Ryan can take charge and make the entire secondary better. But more talent is needed, and time is running out.

My fingers are crossed that they wind up signing some veteran free agent pass rushers and secondary. There are still excellent FAs still waiting for calls. Look at the lists.

  25. steele Says:

There goes DeMarvin Leal to the Steelers at #84. He was the DT pass rusher high on my list. Leal vs. Logan Hall….

  26. Francisco Guzman Says:

Bucs should draft McCollum from Houston. They need another corner. Corner depth!!

Go eat a d!ck propaganda boy.

  28. steele Says:

I would have felt better if Licht had gone for DE Sam Williams or CB Cam Taylor-Britt instead of Goedeke.

No, but Tucker Carlson is apparently in charge of your brain pr0paganda boy.

  30. Yucs2Bucs Says:

Philly gets a steal and n Dean and now Marcus Jones is gone to?? FAQ

  31. Francisco Guzman Says:

Bucs need to draft perrion Winfrey here. Dude prized he has fallen.

  32. 1#bucsfan Says:

Hard to go wrong drafting in the trenches but id like to see corner back competition. Dean n smb we’re handed starting jobs n with a good pass rush they seem legit but no pass rush n when hurt we didn’t play well

  33. Francisco Guzman Says:

Marcus jones is 5’8. I like his teammate McCollum a lot more.

  34. Francisco Guzman Says:

Don’t screw this up licht and draft a corner or a DT here!!

  35. David Says:

    Everyone needs to settle down.
Winfield and Davis are borderline pro bowlers.
Dean is way better than most of you think.
Edwards, Logan, Neal at safety are all versatile and an upgrade in coverage over whitehead. Plus!! They can all play slot.

SMB definitely has some more to prove.
Delaney is as fast as Dean and way better than most of you think as well. He was thrown in as a rookie who wasn’t supposed to play because of injuries. He’s got a future.

DESIR and cockerel… I can do without and that’s where they need to draft someone for depth.

  36. Dewey Selmon Says:

Take the punter from SDSU now before anyone else.

  37. David Says:

Kyle Brandt is an animal. And funny as hell

  38. David Says:

Nice. A young back who can receive. Needed.

  39. Francisco Guzman Says:

What on earth is licht doing! A rb. What a waste of a pick.

  40. Francisco Guzman Says:

David i disagree. We have running backs already. They need a DT or corner depth. Awful selection.

  41. PassingThru Says:

This RB sounds pretty marginal to say the least.

  42. Mike in Arkansas Says:

    Reminds me of RoJo.

  43. PassingThru Says:

Could have used a safety or CB

  44. BradyBucs Says:

    Francisco,

We don’t have any decent RB depth. RBs get hurt all the time.

  45. David Says:

    They already drafted a DT.

They also picked up two safeties who can both play slot along with Edwards who can as well. I expect them to pick up a CB but it’s all about value, not just taking one because you think that’s what you need.

As for running back, they have Lenny and Vaughn. That’s it. Gio proved kind of worthless last year and Rojo is gone

  46. Francisco Guzman Says:

PassingThru they need corner depth and a DT. Could have drafted McCollum from houston. Rated much higher than this running back they selected. Perrion Winfrey there as well. Smh.

  47. Francisco Guzman Says:

David which DT? Hall is more of a defensive end. McCollum was there as well.

  48. Francisco Guzman Says:

PassingThru when these guys get hurt again next year i will say where’s the cornerback depth?

  49. Jerry Says:

Francisco, it’s quite clear by now that the Bucs coaches and front office don’t think CB is a problem.

  50. Yucs2Bucs Says:

They took this guy over Robinson Jr 😳

  51. Jersey buc Says:

Man shut up some of you!! Jason has put together really nice drafts through out the years a lot of our starting players are draft picks of coarse there is a miss here n there but the dude knows how to draft! These coaches also proved they can coach up players. Every pick y’all crying on this bitch. Shut up!

  52. Francisco Guzman Says:

Jerry and i think they’re fooling themselves. We have seen no improvements in coverage from these CBs!!!! I hope they draft a corner here to start the 4th round.

  53. Bob in valrico Says:

Dean had 15 tackles in the last two playoff games. he also had 7 tackles against the rams which is one more than Davis and SMB combined. Although tackling is an issue of concern that more than just cornerbacks had at times during the season, availability is a greater concern on the entire defense, IMO.

  54. Francisco Guzman Says:

Bob in valrico which is why they need some depth at corner.

  55. Chris Says:

Why are you all whining Cobe Bryant is gonna be the first pic tomorrow good Lord
