Chris Simms: Dolphins Tried To Acquire Tom Brady For A Second-Round Pick

April 24th, 2022

Former Bucs QB Chris Simms.

This is funny as hell to Joe.

When Jeff Darlington of ESPN has spoken about Tom Brady, Joe has treated his word as law. No reporter has been as accurate about Brady as Darlington has the past few years.

So when former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms appeared on a podcast called “God Bless Football,” and said the Dolphins tried to pry Brady from the Bucs for a second-round pick, Joe laughed out loud.

Simms, who now works for NBC Sports, may be correct, and Simms has always been a class act with Joe. No, Joe laughs because someone tied to the Dolphins not only claims they tried to trade a second-round pick for Brady, but that someone is shamelessly (allegedly) floating intel to Simms to see if it has wings. LOL

Joe was at the combine when Bucco Bruce Arians told anyone who would listen (not just the assembled NFL media but also NFL Network) that not only did he have zero intention of trading Brady, the only way he would maybe listen to an offer was if a team offered five first round picks.

“Bad business!” Arians barked about the thought of trading Brady. Joe suspects that was a company line from Arians and not just the head coach’s opinion.

As Joe wrote, Darlington said there was “fire to the smoke” about Brady going to Miami but only as a minority owner. Not to play.

Why would the Dolphins trade for a minority owner? Owners, even minority owners, have to cough up cash for a piece of the team. The team doesn’t have to give away precious draft picks to obtain a minority owner.

Florio has been saying it was 100% Brady wanted to go to the 49ers in 2020, and that he wanted to be in Miami this year until the Flores lawsuit happened

  2. tampabuscsbro Says:

Chris Simms is worse then Florio holy GOD.

I’m tired of the football night in america crew.

  3. MDFree Says:

There’s a lot of fanboys on this site. We don’t wanna believe that Brady tried to make a power play on the Bucs and BA cause it would hurt our egos. But I think Florio has been spot on 100% of the way with his reporting this offseason. The Joes want to toe the line but even they admit there is something very off about the way everything has went down thus far. Call me a conspiracy theorist but I think there has been some serious narrative control from the national media types around this story. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck. It speaks volumes that Brady hasn’t yet signed an extension with the team.

  4. Bucthis Says:

Who cares at this point. We have a chance to win it all again this year. We will have had Tom Brady for three years and won at least one Super Bowl in that time. Did anybody think he was going to play forever? He’s planning his life after football. That might have been this year but the stars didn’t align and he put it off a year. That’s great for us fans. Let’s give it one more run and then realize we will be in cap hell for a couple of years. That would be the case even if he signed on for 5 more years.

  5. Rod Munch Says:

That’s 100% stupid Florio feeding Chris a pile of s%@$.

Also, as Arians said, maybe we start talking when you get to 5 1st rounders. Maybe.

  6. Rod Munch Says:

Also, if the story is true, what an insult by the Dolphins to Brady. They only offered a 2nd and didn’t think he was worth more than that? Wow.

Anywho, I don’t care what Brady does after this year. I really really hope he’s back against next year if he’s still able to go, but if he isn’t, I’m just going to thank him for his service and not be jelly about it. People need to just enjoy this run and realize that once Brady leaves, the all-time most losing franchise in all of sports will return, and we will be cursed with another decade+ of being completely irrelevant. This has been an amazing reprieve from the norm, so don’t get salty about it ending before its ended.

  7. Esteban85 Says:

If he’s worth 5 first rounders he’s at least worth 25 2nd rounders!

He’s done after this year. The most logical things is what probably happened here. He really did feel like retiring after that gut wrenching loss, after a grinder of a year. He then explored his opportunities and future in the NFL as a partial owner, but that fell through. That competitive fire down below started burning again white hot and he’s giving it one more year. With that being said should we be drafting a QB?

  8. Buczilla Says:

I don’t blame Chris on this since his boss is a goon. A goon that I hope can turn back into the dude that I enjoyed reading, but I’m afraid that politics has swallowed him up for good.

  9. Defense Rules Says:

Aahh yes, another irrelevant story that refuses to die. Good thing we don’t have to buy shoes for this thing, whatever it is, because it seems to have grown roughly 1000 legs by this point. And every one of them is a different size.

  10. '79Defense Says:

    Rod Munch,

The Bucs no longer have the worst winning percentage in all of sports. The Timberwolves do. We should be able to create more distance between us and them with another winning season.

  11. Ed Kerber Says:

I think this is true. Miami wanted to find out if Tom was really done. If Tampa knew he was done, they’d take the pick. Bruce Arians said “5 1sts.”. Brady said ok, guys let’s go all n. This draft needs to get 3 starters. They also see 3 more free gents. This is a very good Tampa team. Brady is gonna push them to be a All TIME GREAT team.

  12. Allbuccedup Says:

It will or will not play out in 2023. Only time will tell.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I could be wrong, but I think Brady would have to be cleared by the Bucs…(out of his contract) in order to have any position with the Dolphins…..player, coach, owner.

  14. Proud Bucs Fan Says:

Some people cannot understand that Brady wanted to play in the Patriots division as his first choice. Brady regrets the extension, about half thru last year, when he new it was not a superbowl roster. Watch Brady make business decisions on the field this year so he will be fresh and healthy for a new team in 2023.

  15. Listnfrmafar Says:

Ho Hum, Tampa was never his first choice, the wasted talent Bucs have enticed him. Agreed DR, irrelevant, play for today not tomorrow.

  16. DaBux Says:

    To quote my old friend:

    “Crack don’t smoke itself.”

  17. Kalind Says:

Even if true, I’m sure Licht laughed himself to tears before hanging up amid the laughter

  18. Eddie Marz Says:

I hate to say this but some of these reporters don’t report the news they make it up. Mike Florio swore Brady was going to The 49’s now he’s saying Brady was going to Miami, maybe in September he’ll just report the news when Brady starts for Tampa. GOBUCS!

  19. Dr. Stankfinger Says:

Chris Simms has absolutely no insight at all! Anyone who listens to this clown should stop watching sports! Simms has this boy crush on Tua. He wishes he could be him for a day. Instead he sits in his closest and posts trash on YouTube. What a class act. I’m sure Brady called you.. lol.. ok

  20. Chris K Says:

Like sands through the hour glass, so are the days of Florio, Simms and Joe’s lives.

  21. Pickgrin Says:

Florio and Simms – Buccaneer haters – listening to them these days is like reading the National Enquirer…..

  22. Goatfarmer Says:

Another Chrissy Simms ball batted down at the line of scrimmage.

  23. Buccos Says:

The fact of the matter is that we are Super Bowl favorites-AGAIN!! And the Patsies and the Fish will SUCK- AGAIN!! Everyone can hate on the Bucs again as we win our 3rd Super Bowl, putting us on a rather elevated stratosphere that most teams can only dream about. Who’s irrelevant NOW!?!

  24. BuucccNASTY Says:

Idk how any true Bucs fan looks at it different than this. We have sucked almost the entirety of our lives as Bucs fans, we had a few years window in the late 90s early 2000s that was great, outside that we’ve been outright terrible. Tom Brady has been a unicorn for us fans and given us a breath of well needed fresh air, but only a breath since he signed onto our team at the ripe age of 43-44 years young.. anyone who looks any further than him being with us for a year or two, and his intentions afterwards is either stupid or not a real fan because they don’t understand what it has been like to be a Bucs fan their whole life. It’s a Buc life has been something I’ve said to my brothers and other Bucs friends/family after every heartbreaking game we blew for over 20 years.. we suck/buc, let’s face it’s.. buc ball has been synonymous for blowing a game when you had it in the grasp of your palm, game after game and year after year. For all those who think too far into Brady’s intentions “next year” you must be new to the band because every game that dude plays for us is a vacation from reality as a Bucs fan, and nothing more…

  25. TheBradyBunch Says:

Hey Proud we all know you aren’t a Buc fan so just be real with your trolling. The Bucs tied for the best regular season record, brought back every starter from the team that won the Super Bowl in the prior season, and were one blown defensive play at the end of the games from most likely going back to back. Also, Brady isn’t a moron like you and clearly knows how absolutely stacked the AFC is and the Dolphins weren’t going anywhere with or without Brady. Truly an idiotic post by you but that is the norm of course.

  26. TheBradyBunch Says:

Nobody thinks Brady looked around midway through last season and though, gee these guys that just helped me win a SB all suck. Go away Proud and chat on site for your real team.

  27. Bird Says:

    Bucnasty

No doubt. I thought we would have for a year rental. We are going on year 3 And people are upset. The GOAT came to IOwa. I mean tampa

  28. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

LOL, I believe Chris Simms, he would not Lie. After all, he gave his spleen for the Bucs, right ?
Seriously, I am sick of all the he said she said drama, and just ready for some football!

  29. RPK Says:

Chris Simms’ 2019 Top 40 QBs:

    1) Rodgers
    2) Mahomes
    3) Wilson
    4) Luck
    5) Watson
    6) Roethlisberger
    7) Matt Ryan
    8) Newton
    9) TOM BRADY THE GOAT
    10) Drew Brees
    11) Carson Wentz
    12) Philip Rivers

    This guy is a clown.

  30. Pete Says:

It’s the off season. They’re looking hard for content.

  31. Goatfarmer Says:

BradyBunch – outstanding takedown of Proudgirlmoron.

And NASTY – your post should be published in all the sports journals! I’ve been a Bucs fan since the bitter beginning. My poor dad (RIP) got season tickets in 1984, just in time for a run of seasons that is arguably the most epic suckage in all of sport.

    Bravo, lads.

  32. GOB Says:

Why is it so hard to believe? I’m sure Brady was enchanted with Arians, and everything was bubble gum and rainbows. It doesn’t take a mental giant to connect dots. Jesus, most of you people still don’t believe Brady pushed BA out. I don’t know if the Miami thing was real. But, it’s quite plausible when you actually think, instead of using pretzel twisting logic. I certainly believe the part about Peyton. Brady and Peyton were almost united until Brees came back. Stephen Ross is probably the biggest benefactor for the Michigan athletic dept. Brady is a Michigan man. Brady would probably like nothing better than to kick the snot outta the Patriots twice a year. He wouldn’t look at the AFC as stacked. It’d just be another challenge. These reports haven’t been shot down by Miami. Maybe it didn’t make it past the initial stages. But, for Christ sake open your eyes people. Brady will probably continue to play, and it very likely won’t be for the bucs beyond this year.

  33. Bucsfan13 Says:

Defense Rules has to be the most hilarious and well thought out poster on this board. This entire story has grown to be more and more ridiculous.

  34. Lakeland Steve Says:

What a freaking joke. Brady wins a Super Bowl the following year wins 13 games plus a playoff game before losing the last second to the eventual Super Bowl champs? And Sims wants everyone to believe the Dolphins tried to trade for Brady offering only a second round pick? I have always liked Chris Sims because the dude left his spleen on the field while playing for the Bucs but now I’m beginning to think part of his brain was left on the field too.

  35. PassingThru Says:

To be honest, the story does match my hunch that Brady would “unretire” if it gave him a shot at ownership of another team. He would have to be retired in order to buy minority interest in a franchise as active-player status would have been defacto violation of the CBA. Not a single owner in the NFL would have cast an approving vote as it would set a very dangerous precedent for future player salary negotiations.

  36. GOB Says:

Passing, if you think about it, Brady and the dolphins should be investigated for possible tampering. If this Miami stuff is true, you’re correct. It would be a clear violation of the CBA.

  37. Bucsfan13 Says:

@GOB Why would Tom want to play the Patriots twice a year. He would be on a much lesser team in the Dolphins. When he played against the Pats this year with a much loaded roster, he struggled. Bill had him absolutely in shackles for most of the game, but as he always does, Brady found a way to win and make the plays that mattered. But he still would not want any part of Bill twice a year. Bill knows Brady more than Brady knows himself. Say what you will about Belichick, but he’s a defensive mastermind. Those Giants’ defensive teams he coached in the 90’s were great.

  38. PassingThru Says:

For what it’s worth, the Patriots lost both games to the Dolphins last season.

  39. LongSeason Says:

Fake news. These people are actually trying to create controversy for two reason. They want clicks and they are trying to stir up trouble in Tampa. They want to create the story instead of let the story happen. Fake news. Where is the integrity that sports reporting was built on in the old days?

  40. cmurda Says:

@MD Free. You saying Florio has been spot on is the new funniest thing that has been said about anything at all related to this whole nothing saga. Florio has been humiliatingly wrong about everything and Brady is enjoying every second of it. Florio had everyone believe that Brady hated Arians and would never play for Tampa but would play for SF. The list goes on and on. Poor Florio got caught up in the crab traps and then begged for Brady to SF to happen. I love it.

  41. German Buc Says:

    And I tried to buy a new Porsche 911 for 100 $. As the Fins I failed…

  42. tampabayallday Says:

Florio has to make news, his job before as a lawyer proves it.

  43. SlyPirate Says:

General observers miss how much money TB12 pulls in.

Season tickets sold out (tickets, concessions, product)
    5 prime time games
    Top 3 jersey sales

When BA said TB12 is worth 5x1st round picks, he’s not crazy. All the picks in this draft don’t bring in the revenue TB12 does.
