Spotlight On New Head Coach Todd Bowles

March 30th, 2022

New Bucs head coach Todd Bowles.

Yes, Todd Bowles is the new head coach of our beloved Buccaneers.

Shocking. Stunning. Scary.

Bucco Bruce Arians stepped down tonight and a news conference is happening tomorrow at One Buc Palace to announce the changing of the guard.

Bowles was 24-40 in four seasons as New York Jets head coach before arriving in Tampa with Arians in 2019. His teams in New York got progressively worse and he had trouble building a good offensive staff, and there were many credible reports that his defense quit on him. (The numbers back that up, too.) But Bowles won’t have many of those kinds of problems as the Bucs’ head man.

Arians is sticking around as an executive consultant, and the Bucs are a well-oiled machine, from the polished front office to having Tom Brady, Byron Leftwich and a giant Super Bowl coaching staff already in place.

Man, Bowles fell into one hell of a situation. Hopefully he’s up for the challenge.

What a power play by Arians! Joe still can’t believe it. The best head coach in Bucs history pulled the plug on himself and installed his successor in late March — March!

Arians even attended the NFL Owners Meetings this week before leaving early. The Bucs did not provide an explanation for him leaving the meetings other than to say it was personal.

    JFC. The smoke is suffocating

  2. BuxfaninTX Says:

Wonder if his heath issue came back

  3. steele Says:

So what’s the coaching staff now? Who is DC? Still BL at OC?

Brady needs to finally put his stamp on the playbook.

I sincerely hope they match the new coaching regime to the existing roster.

Congrats Todd Bowles and thx Bruce for all you’ve done for us. Great News!!!

  7. NCBucfan Says:

Not a coincidence that he said he is drinking too much these days! Health must be going to s$$t!

  8. Hodad Says:

Arains did not stay for the annual HCs photo. Wonder how long he’s been planning this?

  9. 813bucboi Says:

Sounds like Brady pulled the plug…

Either way…let’s get all the distractions out before the draft so we can focus on winning

    GO BUCS

  10. Geno711 Says:

Laughed at Brady needs to finally put his stamp on the offense!

  11. Jeagan1999 Says:

Wow! Was not expecting this. Thanks BA for getting us another trophy, and good luck Coach Bowles….lets go get another one!

  12. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Congrats Coach Bowles!!!

  13. NCBucfan Says:

I hope Bruce gets the help he needs, and checks into rehab!

  14. JimbobBucsFan Says:

I saw something like this happening but I made no predictions as to when. I am talking specifically about him “stepping up” to some kind of consultant/vision master role. I am assuming it is for health reasons at this time. (“Personal” could mean something else altogether different, though.) We shall see as the information unfolds.

Thanks, “Bucco” Bruce, for everything you accomplished here!

  15. Bucsfan714 Says:

Can BA decide on his replacement?

  16. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Congrats to Coach Kacy Rodgers as the New DC!!

  17. TheBradyBunch Says:

    Stfu NC

  18. JJTIXS Says:

    BOWLES IS NOT THE ANSWER!!!!!!!!!!

  19. TheBradyBunch Says:

Bowles probably cost us a SB last year with his dimbass blitz with seconds left in the Rams game. This is probably not a good thing.

  20. Alstott up the gut Says:

    Brady signs an extension next?

  21. Jerry R Jones Says:

This is not a power play. Such a stupid take on the situation. Its an obvious move, not a unique narrative.

  22. BradyBucs Says:

RUMORS HAD TO HAVE BEEN TRUE…

Brady and Arians had a falling out.

The only way Brady came back was if the Glazers got Arians to step aside. But they didn’t want to do it until after Free Agency.

I THINK 100% THIS WAS ALL BRADY

  23. Joshua porter Says:

Yo Joe do we still get the 3rd round picks?

  24. Bucs Win Says:

Bowles will be fine but personally I would have preferred to see Harold Goodwin get his shot.

  25. Itzok Says:

So we don’t have to follow the rooney rule because Bowles is named.?

  26. Joshua porter Says:

And I don’t see much changing Bowles ran defense last and this year brady and Leftwich ran offense last and this year . Bruce was there for moral support last year . He couldn’t even get to the sidelines last year without using a cart. Thank you Bruce for putting g these coaches together.lets see what they can do . I don’t expect much to change. Jmo

  27. james west Says:

this sucks, thanx bruce for bring us the goat, and a lombardi, last years defensive calls by bowles got us beat after an incredible comeback by tom and the boys, this could blow up quickly

  28. BUCman Says:

    No words 😦😲😯😞😫

  29. gotbbucs Says:

    I wonder two things:
Do the Bucs just get to skip over the Rooney Rule on this one? Technically they’re supposed to interview TWO minority coaches.
Do the Bucs now recieve a 3rd round pick this year, or does it have to wait until next year?

  30. Francisco Guzman Says:

Bowles is not exactly an upgrade. Smh. Damn I wish jim harbaugh was available.

  31. Dom>Licht Says:

President of football operations… TOM BRADY made this decision for Arians!

  32. BucsfanChad Says:

You can’t completely blame Bowles for not succeeding in NY. It was a sh*t job to begin with. So many coaches get a garbage job, get fired, and then go on to be a great coach in a more stable organization. Look at Bill Belicheat. Took a crap job with Browns and look at him now.
Please stop using the greatest coach of all-time as an example. Most head coaches who get a “garbage job” and get fired deserved it. Bowles’ team got worse. Somehow Rex Ryan landed in two AFC Championship games with the Jets despite no quarterback. –Joe

  33. Mcruzer Says:

The Bucs had the largest coaching staff in the NFL last year. There will be a lot of continuity of leadership. I’m not as worried as I would be with an entirely new coach coming in that would change the entire regime.

  34. Defense Rules Says:

‘Bowles was 24-40 in four seasons as New York Jets head coach before arriving in Tampa with Arians in 2019.’

Robert Saleh went 4-13 last season with Joe Douglas as his GM. Adam Gase went 9-23 in 2019-2020 with Joe Douglas as his GM. Todd Bowles went 24-40 in 2015-2018 with Mike Maccagnan as his GM. Rex Ryan went 12-20 in 2013-2014 with John Idzik as his GM, and before that Ryan was 34-30 in 2009-2012 with Mike Tannenbaum as his GM.

Jets’ GM job has been a carousel for many years. None of those coaches were necessarily bad coaches, but their rosters were anything but stacked. QBs since 2009 have included Mark Sanchez, Kellen Clemons, Mark Brunell, Greg McElroy, Tim Tebow, Geno Smith, Matt Simms, Michael Vick, Ryan Fitpatrick, Bryce Petty, Josh McCown, Sam Darnold, Luke Falk, Trevor Sieman, Joe Flacco, Zach Wilson, Mack White & Joe Johnson. That’s 18 different QBs used in games since 2009 (13 years).

So a continually whirring GM carousel, HC carousel & QB carousel. What could possibly go wrong?

Personally I’m excited that Todd Bowles is taking over as HC, although I never expected it this season. I’m just hoping that they don’t dual-hat Todd as both the HC AND DC. Relatively few coaches can make that work.

  35. Colin in Canada Says:

Hopefully BA is not sick or something. Who knows.

  36. DaBux Says:

Just let Lefty be free to do his thing and quit blitzing Stafford with less than a minute to play and all will be fine.

  37. NYbucsfan Says:

I am not a fan of this move.

  38. SB~LV Says:

Brady has finally found his yes man
    TB=‘s AB

  39. Purplepirate Says:

    “Brady signs an extension next?”

Why would Brady sign an extension to play for a coach with a career losing record? Hell, he might even retire again lol.

  40. Dom>Licht Says:

Brady made the call… if he is happy with Bowles than I am … He got rid of the idiot changing HIS game plans!

  41. sasquatch Says:

Who is the new DC? Please say it’s not Kacy Rodgers. The Jets defense wasn’t good with him, from what I’ve read.

  42. D-Rok Says:

    Agree, DR.

BL and Brady got the offense on lock-down. No issues there. Who is gonna be DC tho?

  43. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I am quite OK with Todd Bowles being our head coach.
I just wonder if he will run the Defense himself, or hire a new Defensive Coordinator ?

  44. Listnfrmafar Says:

Brady knows how to win BA didn’t have it in him anymore. All the stories were true, BA went to the movies. Good riddens! If it’s due to health, I renege my post.

  45. Bojim Says:

No excuses for Bowles. BA left him all set.

  46. Havingfitz Says:

Good luck to Bowles. Go Bucs!

  47. Buccos Says:

BA probably does have a drinking problem. I wouldn’t be surprised. He is also very old. This is a young man’s game. Good for him knowing when to step aside. The team will probably be better for it. Bowles could coach us for the next decade. Good luck Coach Bowles! And best of luck to Coach Arians

  48. Crickett Baker Says:

I also wonder why Goodwin didn’t get the nod. It’s weird since he has been Arian’s asst. I, too, thought Bruce was ill because he left the Owner’s meeting, but he says he is not in his statement. It all is strange to me. Good luck, Todd.

  49. Craig Says:

I wish him luck. He was, possibly, the best coach the Jets have had in a while. It was the rest of the team that was snake-bit and you could see Bowles’ frustration.

Hope this works out for him.

  50. Francisco Guzman Says:

I am not a fan of todd bowles. I would have cleaned house frankly.

  51. David Says:

The defensive players here love Bowles. I think he will do just fine. He just needs to BL and Brady handle the offense. I think the players quitting in New York and giving up had more to do with the way that organization is run

  52. David Says:

I would not be surprised if BA is sick but apparently they’ve all known about this for a couple weeks.

This explains why BA was missing in the coaches photo that Kyle Brandt was going over

  53. matthew veal Says:

Good luck and best wishes to our new coach Bowles.
Some hfoers like Pete Carroll and believing needed a second chance after they flamed out in the beginning.

Particularly if you coached the jets.

    I admit I’m often wrong.

  54. Esteban85 Says:

I AM a fan of Todd Bowles. I think he did a crap job in NY but there is something to be said about that subpar franchise. Like many have already stated, continuity is not a concern. A lot of Bowles haters on here and I get it but the dude is savvy, his players would take a bullet for him, he’s already produced a stud defense for us and I think he can do it again.

  55. Buczilla Says:

I’m torn on this one and I’m thinking that Leftwich should have gotten the job. I hope Todd kicks butt though for all our sakes.

  56. adam from ny Says:

i’m really almost at a loss for words now…

this offseason is just bombshell after bombshell…

BA was a pretty chill head coach…

wild type moves coming out of one buc of late

  57. Jerseybuc Says:

This was always the plan, but I wonder what sort of HC inherits a coaching staff yet is not an interm coach.
Having watched him closely here with the Jets I will tell you one thing Buc fans. Better get him someone to manage the clock. He was horrible at that.
