New Bucs guard Shaq Mason

Expect that Bucs general manager Jason Licht had a chat with assistant Bucs special teams coach Keith Tandy (the former Tampa Bay safety) before he signed receiver Russell Gage in free agency last week.

That’s how business in done at One Buc Palace, Licht explained today. The GM was talking about consulting with Tom Brady before finalizing a trade with New England to bring starting guard Shaq Mason to Tampa last week.

Tandy played with Gage in Atlanta and Brady was with Mason for four seasons.

“We watched all the tape from the last couple of years and we saw a very consistent player, one that we would love to have here,” Licht said of Mason. “Right before I agreed with the trade, I reached out to Tom [Brady], and that’s normal to do with a player that’s played with someone. Not just Tom, but any player that’s played with a player that you’re thinking about trading for And the reports were outstanding. It made me feel better about the situation, and it made me feel better about doing it.”

Licht went on to clarify that he talked to Brady “when I was in talks” with the Patriots.

I will repeat myself. It never occurred to me to expect the major role TB would play as a recruiter/evaluator of high end talent for us when we found him behind Door Number Two!. He has been such a godsend in in so many ways it is just remarkable.

Go Bucs! Do I see another Lombardi residing at One Buc Place in the near future?

Just good for thought. The Buccaneers scored 54 offensive touchdowns last year. 43 passing 11 rushing. The Packers scored 48. 38 passing and 10 rushing. That alone tells me Brady was more valuable than Rogers. Nobody was as productive as Brady last year. That MVP vote was a sham. GOBUCS!

  6. Pigsueybucsfan Says:

This shows to me a little of why players like being here. If the GM thinks enough to value a players opinion,( not just Brady’s) that has a trickle down effect and shows the respect management has for a players opinion and not mere lip service. BA shows the same to his staff as well. I remember a few years ago a lot of people were calling for Licht’s head, funny how winning changes things, but I think we get a little better look at how things are done at 1Buc. Certainly not privy to the bad but do we need to be? On another great note, welcome back Lenny…..
