Buccaneers Sign Safety Logan Ryan

March 18th, 2022

Updated 8:08 a.m. — The rich get richer!

Man, it is historic what the Bucs front office is doing.

The Tom Brady recruitment tour continued this morning with NFL Network reporting that versatile safety Logan Ryan, a two-time Super Bowl winner with the Belicheats and a Giants captain last year, is now a Buccaneer.

Ryan, 31, is a Schiano Man, aka a Rutgers University guy drafted by New England in Round 3 of the 2013 NFL Draft. Ryan was a cornerback with the Belicheats for four seasons before moving on to Tennessee for three. He’s spent the last two years with the Giants playing safety and all over the defensive backfield.

Ryan is super durable, missing just five games in nine years, and two were COVID-related. He’s been a strong blitzer and a ballhawk at times in his career. Joe is very eager to see how defensive coordinator Todd Bowles uses him, versus how he used departed Bucs safety Jordan Whitehead.

Time to scratch Tyrann Mathieu off the list.

Keep working that salary cap, Jason Licht!

UPDATED: 8:08 a.m. – Ryan is no stranger to Tampa, training with former Bucs receiver Yo Murphy in town.

  1. Bucsfanman Says:

    Another great signing!

I can’t wait to see what they do with the DL.

  2. rrsrq Says:

This really gives the Bucs a coach on the field on the back end. Nothing against the “youngry” defensive backs, the grave diggers, but I like this

  3. PassingThru Says:

He ain’t what he used to be.

  4. rrsrq Says:

I think Todd Bowles told the honeybadger, go where you can make the most money to support my step daughter, we can’t pay you like that, 😁😁😁

  5. Bucdan Says:

That’s two players with multiple SBs with NE under Billy B. My opinion, consistency is key and these new additions will help the younger guys realize that making it to the top once is fine and dandy. Getting back again requires additional work and focus.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Wondering how much?…..still amazed at the spending on players other than Gronk & Lenny….Suh.

    Ryan, Gage, Mason, Perriman……

  7. Miller5252 Says:

It’s like the front office turned all the rules off in Madden and can sign or trade for whomever they want. Crazy, 2 weeks ago I thought this was going to be a painful year to be a Bucs fan after those 2 amazing years. Glad the painful 41 days of what ifs are over.

  8. Alstott up the gut Says:

Being from NY, I know this guy was an absolute leader on the field for the Giants defense. I think it is a great depth move, even if it does not fit the high end flashy acquisition we all hope for. He is very smart, hard working, and will make help the secondary a lot! Very happy with this move.

  9. TDTB2022 Says:

Licht keeps making it this fun for Brady and Brady will play until he is 50!

    LFG!!!!!

  10. ModHairKen Says:

    Tyrann had his chance.

  11. Armybucfan Says:

I know this is probably a pipe dream but I just read an article that made me have hope that we may get one of the best defensive linemen available. Z. Smith from green bay just backed out of a deal with the Baltimore ravens for some serious amount of money. What stopped him from signing? The tea leaves are telling me that the GOAT RECRUITED SMITH TO COME WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP. Just saying. What’s your take JOE?

  12. Bbro Says:

I think what it’s all those playing and living in the frozen element’s then see Brady & the Bucs partying in shorts & tee shirts in mid February. They’re waiting in line to get down to One Buc Place 🍻

  13. Gerinda Says:

What about re-signing our team, like founette, Gronk and the others?

  14. Bird Says:

Dang. That is huge. He can line up wherever in secondary and take reps from SMB too.

    Licht is killing it

  15. Tbbucs3 Says:

Amazing how just 6 days ago, the Bucs were a dead organization……..until Tom Brady returned

  16. Listnfrmafar Says:

Honey Badger, NO MONEY, NO TICKET! Ryan is better than Edward’s that’s for sure. Sign the guy that picked off the last pass Brady threw in NE. That’s a start for the secondary. Need another corner.

  17. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Z Smith is an OLB

  18. Bird Says:

Me and bro joked that with losing whitehead bucs needed a db and safety in draft. Or a dual purpose guy in draft that is capable of both. Like a fitzpatrick for steelers

Logan can do both which is huge. He can like up at safety. He can line up at corner. And You are not given the C on your jersey if you are not legit.

Logan can play all over secondary including slot

Bucs can really think about going d tackle and edge rusher with first 2’picks
    Love this move!

  19. #8 Says:

Let the D dominos start to fall-
You win with a pass thrower & a pass rusher (I keep hearing the screaming heads say this & its true).
I feel great/decent on our secondary now. If we get injured like last year, the fix is having a pass rush…without a pass rush, it doesn’t matter.
Excited to see who/how they address this.
Gronk is coming & so is Brady’s deal–they’ll figure those last to adjust to whatever/however free agency plays out.

  20. Dooley Says:

Sure do wish we drafted this guy back in 2013, instead going through all of that Revis nonsense that went on.

  21. Francisco Guzman Says:

Logan struggled this past season. Don’t know if i like this move. Are they gonna sign any DL players?

  22. Listnfrmafar Says:

Rams pick up Robinson, if Woods is available he is a STUDD!!! When he went out the Rams started to tumble, they had no choice to sign OBJ.

  23. PassingThru Says:

Logan Ryan used to be an excellent slot CB, that’s where he earned the big bucks. He lost some quickness in coverage, but he made a successful transition to S. He’s just “OK” as a Safety, but as others have pointed out, he’s smart: he won’t get lost in coverage, he reads plays well enough to be trusted to freelance when needed, and he’s a vet leader which is something the “Gravediggers” need. For example, he won’t get lost on plays which was why the Bucs defense collapsed against the Rams.

  24. lambchop Says:

    Good signing. Awesome versatility.

  25. HC Grover Says:

    heh, heh, heh

  26. Bucs Win Says:

    @ Francisco
Did he struggle last year or was he just on a crappy Defense? He’s going from the 23rd overall Defense to the 5th. It’s a good signing.

  27. SufferingSince76 Says:

Geez, Francisco. Give them a chance. You mentioning the D line needs every post isn’t moving Licht one bit.

  28. adam from ny Says:

beware of guys with 2 first names 🙂

  29. Steven007 Says:

I’ve been wanting us to get Logan Ryan for years. I think this is a great move. Obviously means no honey badger.

  30. HC Grover Says:

Plugs Licht, as we lose one he plugs the hole with another.

  31. Francisco Guzman Says:

Fix the DL! That’s the most important part of this team and it’s bare right now.

  32. Casual Observer Says:

Like TB bucs fan, I wonder about all the cap money. Got to have Gronk.

  33. adam from ny Says:

yeah the giants are a very bad football team rn…

we should try to pry away OL will hernandez from them…

he’s in the doghouse and still relatively young

  34. adam from ny Says:

giants are the bottom feeders in the nfc east right now

  35. adam from ny Says:

licht and company are making moves galore…

    gotta love it !

  36. adam from ny Says:

i hear they’re working on the lenny contract too 🙂

  37. Infomeplease Says:

    So far so good 😊

  38. DEEEMO Says:

WOW!!!! Another great signing!!!! Bucs Front Office is Killing it so far with the Brady Effect in play! Time to Build that D Line now..

  39. PassingThru Says:

Well since Licht and Brady are making the rounds, I wonder if there’s any interest in bringing in Malcolm Butler for a workout. I can see why teams would be hesitant, Butler’s abrupt retirement in camp was a head-scratcher. Also, players who take a year off tend to suck when they attempt to come back.

But I think he’s worth a phone call and plane ticket. I hope they check him out.

  40. SB~LV Says:

    Love it!
Don’t know sheet about him other than that what I just read
Bottom line we added another proven vet that still is hungry!

  41. Defense Rules Says:

Signing Logan Ryan is HUUUUGE! Not only did we replace Jordan Whitehead, but we replaced him with someone better. Don’t know how long he’ll be with us (1 year, or whatever) but I can see him being a great leader in that Secondary from Day 1, and being a great mentor for Winfield (the future leader back there).

Side benefit: it keeps Mike Edwards freed up, and that’s his best role IMO. Todd Bowles seems to have an excellent feel for where to insert Edwards (extra DB, whatever) so that he can take advantage of his greta ball-hawk skills.

  42. SKBucsFan Says:

I agree. This is a good pickup. Ya he’s old, but by all accounts he’s a great leader for the young CB core we have.

  43. catcard202 Says:

Not no sure I love this move…Bucs collecting former PATS & team legs getting older /more worn – is not ideal.

Is like going to a tire shop & buying 40% tread Perelli’s off the used rack (Ryan)…When you have 90% tread Goodyears already on the car. (Edwards / Winfield)

  44. Goatfarmer Says:

    This is like football porn.

Jason Lilcht indeed killing it, and of course it helps to have TB12 as lead recruiter.

    What an offseason!

  45. Tgif Says:

Not saying it will happen but imagine we got Julio and tyrann Mathieu

  46. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

After signing Gage I saw no reason to sign Perriman. Wasted money. I also have to disagree that Ryan is or will be better than Edwards.

  47. Goatwatcher Says:

Brady’s last play as a Patriot was a pick six, by Logan Ryan. Unfinished business I guess.

  48. Texas Buc 1976 Says:

Ryan had 117 tackles last year with the Giants, missed two games, because of Covid, was a Captain. He may be a step slower but brings experience to a young backfield. Love the move.

  49. sasquatch Says:

Glad they’ve finally added one piece to the defense. Is he an upgrade? Is he still playing well?

  50. D-Rok Says:

I would venture to guess that Ryan will bring excellent communication to the secondary, almost like a mini-coach ON the field. I think it’s a quality signing and won’t break the bank.

  51. Stanglassman Says:

Armybucs. I’d love to sign Smith from GB too. He backed out of the 9m yr deal with the ravens because comparable players were signing for 14/15m a year. It’s going to take around that to get him. That’s probably a little rich for us.

Matt Ioannidis DT was just released by the commanders. That’s who I have my eye on. Check him out he’s just what BA wants quicker interior who’s versatile that won’t break the bank.

  52. Denny Gay Says:

I’m not sure I can go back to the “old” Buc ways – bad drafts, no things, & letting players get out of here.

  53. Listnfrmafar Says:

Goatwatcher then it is apparent you missed both Rams/Bucs & Jets game. DR you were doing good until you wrote Toilet Bowles seems to know where Edward’s should play. It is also apparent you missed the games listed above.

  54. bucschamp Says:

    it’s getting exciting

  55. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Man this is so different than the vibe two weeks ago!

  56. MadMax Says:

I remember hoping we would draft him when he came out….so no Tyrann now.

    All good, great pick up.

  57. MadMax Says:

Mr. Licht got me day drinking, damn lol….good thing im off today.

  58. Dave Says:

Maybe Bowles gets a huge raise and we get the Honey Badger at a minimum deal too.

  59. Tony Says:

Would be nice if we could put Fletcher Cox would Vita. Since Philadelphia let him go although I wouldn’t be surprised if goes back. Especially not knowing what’s going on with Suh.

  60. Rod Munch Says:

He was a co-caption and got cut from the Giants, even though it barely saved them any money.

I’d hold off on him being a starter, in fact I’d wait to see if he even makes the team.

  61. Dunhill Says:

Lmao. Get used to seeing him running after a reciever that beats him or being so out of position that everyone else on defense stares at him after another TD. Dude is HORRIBLE. Oh, you will also hear him say non stop that he is a leader. No one else in the team will but he will say itNON STOP.

  62. steele Says:

YES. LOGAN RYAN. We saw this coming, didn’t we! Brings the right attitude to this secondary.

Now can we also get Fletcher Cox? Mean dudes, please come to Tampa.

  63. Dan Williamson Says:

As far as signing Gronkowski and Fournette, obviously Licht and Arians have already been talking to get to the final stage of contracts. That according to my insider, me, who is as accurate as “Shifty”scheffter and a hell of a lot more appropriate in my ethics. He forced Tom into that decision with his nosey antics, like a cub reporter anxious enough for a scoop to run over some people to do it.Ive been saying exactly that for a month and a half, ask my son for verification if you need it, reiterated by Tom Brady sr. himself, the Papa Goat. Jr. is recruiting and training, let him do his thang. Gronk and Fournette will be signed. They will restructure, defer or whatever to get it done. I know its hard to believe my fellow OG Buc fanatics, but we are now a top class organization.
