Alex Cappa Calls Out A Buccaneer Key To His Development

March 20th, 2022

Alex Cappa reflects.

Yes, Joe tearfully cracked open a Bromosa from Big Storm Brewing Co. and tearfully watched Alex Cappa’s introductory news conference in Cincinnati.

New readers here may not realize that Joe always keeps track of former Buccaneers, and certainly former Super Bowl players seem even more interesting.

Cappa, a Bucs guard drafted in Round 3 of the 2018 NFL Draft, pounced on a contract from Bengals and spurned Tom Brady’s plea. Cappa won’t talk about jilting The Goat at the news conference, but he did respond when asked to name a top mentor at his previous team.

No, Cappa didn’t pick Pro Bowl center Ryan Jensen, a guy whose style is supposed to rub off on others. No, he didn’t choose freshly-retired Pro Bowl guard Ali Marpet or Brady. Cappa went right to Demar Dotson, the former Bucs right tackle (2009-2019).

Cappa also referenced another mentor, retired journeyman NFL center Taylor Boggs, also from Cappa’s Humboldt State University, who told him six years ago to “jump off this balcony” if he didn’t think he could play in the NFL. That got Cappa’s mind right in college, he said, to build a professional football career at a small school.

Good luck, “Cap.” And good luck facing Vita Vea in the fall when the Bucs face the Bengals. You’ll need it.

40 million dollars is hard to turn down, even for Tom Brady.
I wish Cappa well up there!

  2. tampabayallday Says:

he earned his contract, goodluck Cap

  3. Niles Says:

Cappa thinks if we couldn’t win it last season no way we win it next season.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If it weren’t for the Gage pickup, losing Cappa would net us a comp pick…..

I don’t blame him at all for signing with the Bengals…..good team, good money!!!

  5. Marine Buc Says:

I wish Cappa luck but I believe he is highly over rated…

Any lineman protecting Tom Brady will benefit from Brady’s quick decision making and release of the football. At @ @ seconds he is the quickest draw in the league.

I’m not saying he is brown water trash but he is just mediocre and over paid.

We will see how well he does protecting J. Burrow.

  6. Marine Buc Says:

    ** at @ 2 seconds he is the quickest….

  7. SlyPirate Says:

Vea lines up against the LG. Cappa plays RG.

  8. HC Grover Says:

    Bye Bye and who cares?

  9. Alanbucsfan Says:

He won a ring, played with the Goat, became a multimillionaire, and now gets to play with Burrow… charmed life!

Vea plays nose tackle, nose tackles usually line up over the center… real close though. Good try.

  11. gp Says:

Would’ve liked to keep him at a reasonable price but….
He’s getting his payday, and we shouldn’t see much of a drop off at the position so…
    Win-Win
Hope you do well, except when you play the Bucs. Then I wanna see you curb stomped.
    Just sayin…

  12. Leighroy Says:

In response to the flash poll: No. The Valspar Championship is way more entertaining than watching the last 4 minutes of college basketball games take 25 minutes to play out.

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

Overrated or not, Cappa got paid. Thats the name of this short career leagued game guys. I suspect JPP is gonna get paid also. Bucs better find a Defense. And it ain’t to be found at the Dollar or 99 cents store either.

  14. ModHairKen Says:

He got pushed backwards. He was not a guy they ran behind. His shortcomings were masked by Wirfs stellar play. Bye bye and who cares is exactly right.

  15. Eddie Marz Says:

All of these players will make MORE money staying on The Bucs. Maybe not in contract but in future earnings. It pays to play on a Super Bowl winner. Just ask Tom Brady.

  16. SOEbuc Says:

In the middle of Jensen and Wirfs gives him a bit leniency, but I wish him the best unless it’s vs the Bucs.

  17. teacherman777 Says:

    Cappa is 6-6 and stiff.

    Mason is 6-1 and fluid.

Mason is a huuuuge upgrade at run blocking.

Now, I say we draft a first round OG/C to make the best O-Line in the NFL for the next 3 years.

    Draft an OG/C please!!!

    Stinnie can backup our guards.

  18. dmatt Says:

Mason is a clone of Jensen. His run block is to maul first point of contact n pass block is to ddt first n second defender in close proximity of his qb. He has an eye of an eagle as he’s always looking for a second person to block after putting the first defender on his butt. He performs like a man on a mission. Poof, be gone Cappa, we got a big steal on Mason.

  19. webster Says:

Some of you guys are clowns trying to down play cappa’s performance. He graded out very high against the run and was very good against the pass. You can google his grades. Also, you very rarely heard his name called during a game which is a good thing for an olineman. Oh btw…..he was a pro bowl alternate. That is not decided by a fan vote. That is determined by nfl coaches, players etc. The man is a good player and has earned his money. Give him and jason licht credit. Yes, i remember many of you killing this man and licht 6 games into his rookie season. He developed as you would hope all draft picks would. Congrats cappa

  20. Pickgrin Says:

Bucs were VERY fortunate that Belicheat would trade a player like Mason to us for so little.

Its almost a “too good to be true” situation frankly.

Almost like – What’s wrong with this guy? Why would BB let such a good OL player go for such little compensation??

By all accounts – Mason is a definite upgrade over Cappa at RG – and he makes less $ as well.

Why ask why I guess…. Chalk it up to another stroke of good fortune attributable to the Brady Effect or somesuch.

  21. Venom Gland Says:

Cappa made the right choice. He is going to have a long career. He will grow with his new team and new budding QB. Go Cappa!! I hope you succeed. I hope our DL eats your lunch whenever we face you.

  22. David Says:

I like Cappa, I’m happy for him, and I’m not going to say Mason is a huge upgrade because I don’t know.
I do know once he gells with the other lineman it is at least equivalent and it’s a little better for the salary cap

  23. David Says:

As for all the people who won’t watch March madness… I don’t get it. I don’t get how you can be a sports fan and not watch March madness.

I don’t get how you can live in this area and not watch the BACK2BACK Stanley cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning. Easily the hardest trophy to win in sports.

I don’t get how you cannot watch, or at least pay attention to, the Tampa Bay Rays, who put together one of the best baseball teams year after year after year with 1/4th of the Yankees salary.

Personally I don’t care about the NBA much, it’s just not much of a team sport anymore.
I’m a big golfer and I watch all the golf tournaments but I do understand why people could find it boring, just like baseball.
But I don’t understand how someone could be a sports fan and only care about one sport (unless it’s NASCAR, that’s not a sport to me, that’s beyond boring)

anyway, go Buccaneers, go Lightning, rooting for the upsets in March madness, and the Masters can’t be here soon enough.

  24. Buczilla Says:

Demar seems like a cool dude and he was a solid player too. I don’t begrudge Cappa for leaving, but I do get a bit of extra satisfaction when we beat a team that has one or more of our former players on it.

  25. adam from ny Says:

    dang…cappa got paid…

maybe he thought he was the weakest link on the line and is looking really good right about now on the open market – so take the biggest chunk of cash because you are being paid way over your head anyway…so he bolted…

    sucks…but oh well

  26. adam from ny Says:

he said F the brady effect…i’m going for the fat pocket effect…

  27. Bucs96NYC Says:

Overarching player in every sense. I think he might of reached his ceiling & that’s not a slight b/c that got him 40 mill. All of us wish reaching our ceiling results in that payout lol
