Among the many Bucs free agents this offseason is hard-hitting safety Jordan Whitehead. The pride of Pittsburgh has turned into a John Lynch-like weapon with his knack of blowing people up and forcing turnovers.
Do the Bucs even beat the Packers in the 2020 NFC title game without Whitehead’s forced fumble early in the second half that led to a Cam Brate touchdown catch on the very next play?
Whitehead was also part of Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht’s best trades (the No. 2 trade, in Joe’s eyes). Licht traded down in the 2018 draft in the first round and selected Vita Vea. With the fourth-round pick Licht received in the swap, he selected Whitehead. (Licht’s best trade was stealing Jason Pierre-Paul away from the Giants for a third-round pick.)
If the Bucs don’t re-sign Whitehead, he’s going to be a sweet pickup for some team and become a wealthy young man.

It’s nothingburger. They’re probably starting negotiations. Playing hardball most likely. Trying to explain to him why they will lowball him due to all the other contracts coming up. I believe they’ll find a way to hit a middle ground. If not he’ll be delivering knockouts for someone else. Hope that’s not the case.

Licht’s goal will be to stay competitive in the NFC South but to prep the salary cap for 2023 to allow him to be more aggressive with trades and free agency

Agree TBBF, not a clue what Whitehead is trying to say. Just another ‘speculation piece’ at this point.
JL could see a tsunami of FAs leaving though if he’s not careful. They’re ALL businessmen & most are family men; they’ll do what’s best for THEIR business & THEIR families. And so would we.
When it comes down to money, JL shot his wad in 2020 & 2021. Right now we’re middle-of-the-pack or lower. Heck, we don’t even have a QB designated at this point (BA semi-anointing Gabbert this early & prior to FA is a HUGE mistake BTW). It’s gonna be hard to keep some of those guys, especially some of those just seeking their 2nd contract. And even harder if top performers feel Bucs won’t be competitive in 2021 (or beyond).

Buc’s can’t sign anyone until they sign a quarterback….it’s Russell Wilson…but that hasn’t been a done deal yet….at least it hasn’t been announced…but will be soon…then they can sign people.

His agent asked for top dollar and Licht asked for bottom dollar. His agent told Whitehead the result of the first meeting and Whitehead lost it.
The agent and Licht then called Whitehead to explain how negotiations work and he took down the post.
This is Whitehead’s first contract negotiation. He’s learning.

He is NOT the best we have in the secondary , Winfield Jr is . Jordan is good when he is not hurt tho . All this tall about JL , this gm is the best one we have ever had , at least tied with McKay..drafted vea, Godwin, Evans, Winfield , white , marpet , whirfs, and many others . Not to mention getting brady , gronk, jensen , jpp , suh and the list goes on ! He’s done a fine job .

They are in cap trouble because they have to restructure significant contracts to sign players they absolutely need. And they may be able to free 60 million… And then…
Godwin will average at least 17 million per year, conservatively.
Davis will average 15 million, conservatively.
Whitehead: 7, conservatively.
Gholston: 5 conservatively.
So, there’s 44 million, conservatively. That leaves 16 million, without signing Jensen, Cappa, Stinnie, Suh, Gronk, draft picks or other free agents… So, we’re tight even with restructures… And then for 2 years in a row we will have pushed significant money into future years. We WILL have to pay the piper at some point.
I’m not saying we can’t do it, but I am saying that acting like they don’t have real cap concerns is a fantasy.

As I understand it, freeing up 60million would require restructuring every single contract to the vet minimum and pushing ALL of it down the road. Not going to happen. Better not happen.
