NFL Suit Claims “Expectation” In League Circles Is Bucs Will Make A Play For Jimmy Garoppolo

February 3rd, 2022

49ers QB Jimmy GQ.

Are the Bucs going to be a player for a veteran starting quarterback? And could that quarterback be Jimmy GQ? One NFL personnel man said chatter in NFL circles is that the answer is “Yes.”

Whether the Bucs grab Jimmy GQ is another story.

Matt Lombardo, FanSided columnist, is a former Eagles and Giants beat writer for NJ.com. So Lombardo has a lot of contacts within the NFL.

He was recently tipped off by an NFL suit that shot-callers around the NFL believe the Bucs are one of three teams that will be major players for Jimmy GQ in the trade market. Jimmy GQ has one year left on his 49ers contract.

One current personnel director tells FanSided the expectation inside the league is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Denver Broncos are expected to make a strong push to trade for Garoppolo.

Is Jimmy GQ another Tom Brady? Hell, no. But he surely isn’t Ryan Tannehill or Jalen Hurts either. Jimmy GQ has led the 49ers to two NFC title games in three years. That’s not shabby.

Lombardo noted that a former NFL general manager likened Jimmy GQ to retired Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck.

The Bucs could do a lot worse than Jimmy GQ. You know, like how folks on Twitter are trolling Joe that Gardner Minshew is the answer. Can you imagine?

So what about Kyle Trask? Last year the Bucs used the entire year as a developmental season for him, working on Trask’s fundamentals, etc. Is he ready to lead a veteran, winning ballclub? No one outside of One Buc Palace knows.

Lombardo also noted that an AFC player personnel director told him Jimmy GQ can be had for a second-round pick.

  1. NYbucsfan Says:

Jimmy GQ stinks! If he is so good, why is he getting dumped in SF? Have you seen the 49er defense and special teams? That’s why they win.

  2. SufferingSince76 Says:

You can’t be NFL ready when your only experience is a few pre-season games, no matter how good you may be. I love my Bucs, but something is rotten in Denmark with regard to Trask.

  3. D-Rome Says:

I’d be good with it. He’s no Brady. It’s clear you can win with him and he’d have better targets here assuming the Bucs sign Godwin and keep Fournette. Deebo and Kittle are great but after them the drop off in offensive talent is huge.

The Bucs cannot do what they did for Gruden and mortgage their future for a guy like Rodgers or Russell Wilson. Garoppolo would be a bridge-the-gap QB. Trask is not ready and every other FA QB is far worse.

  4. Greg Says:

I think the right question may be is he Matthew Stafford?

  5. Weebs10 Says:

    Let’s go get Mitch Trubisky

  6. Listnfrmafar Says:

The man does win, he’s gone to 2 SB’s with 9ers and 1 with Pat’s. He just can’t close. He’s as good as Bucs will get.for a second tier QB. He probably won’t be phased by playing in Bradys shadow either, he’s fought that battle for years. Roger’s would be demanding and a locker room virus, Wilson would be perfect, Watson comes with too much baggage and the rest are the same if not worst.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

My only question is…..Is he kinky when he gets a massage?

  8. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

Would rather have Carr…, Derek not David, but Jimmy GQ is an ok consulation prize.

  9. SKBucsFan Says:

A 2nd round pick is too high for a perennial addition to the injured list. We need an LB / DL / OT more than we need Jimmy G
Build in the draft and give Trask a chance.

  10. westernbuc Says:

    No

  11. BashingBucs2520 Says:

    @NYBucsFan

That’s how most teams win super bowls. We would have been in a better spot if we didn’t have two kickoffs go out of bounds against the rams.

  12. VSyl Says:

Maybe this guy gets too much criticism for blowing leads and not playing well, but never forget who his HC was on the 49ers, the guy who was OC on that falcons team that blow that 28-3 game.

  13. TBChucky Says:

    ^^^ This^^^

A 2nd rounder and a 25 million dollar salary for a marginal talent.. No thanks.. I’d rather bring back Jameis than make that trade..

  14. Doctor Stroud Says:

Maybe a sixth round pick at best and a major re-negotiated contract, but a second round pick?! No way! That would be better spent on a defensive back or an offensive lineman.

  15. Jp09 Says:

H£LL F’ING NO. This dude is trash and has always been carried by his team, this would be an absolute failure and waste of time

  16. Jim Says:

Jimmy G with FitzMagic as back-up! A fun time while searching for your franchise QB…

  17. HC Grover Says:

    No…

  18. Que5 Says:

Preference is Watson, but don’t know how legal situation will play out…Rodgers is staying in Green Bay or going to Denver, Russ Wilson is staying in Seattle, Carr is staying in Vegas. Jimmy G is only real option.

  19. PassingThru Says:

Positives: One year contract, he can be a transition figure for Trask who I doubt is ready.

Negatives: With that contract?!? Too little cap space, why screw up the roster just for a one-year transition QB?

  20. jvato24 Says:

Pretty sure he is paid more than Brady was, He had one of the best running games in the league, I’m not enamored with him

  21. Eric Says:

Jimmy G is a game manager to me and perfect if you have a top defense, which we do not. Our D is a paper champion. The numbers worked good at the end of the year when you’re facing Carolina, New Orleans, Philly etc. they don’t have any quarterbacks. We gave up 30 points a game to all of the decent quarterbacks we played this year. That’s not a top defense.

  22. Amar Says:

Would be a waste of a trade

  23. gbobucsfan Says:

    ~$23 million ???? no thanks

  24. Tim Says:

So it’s the Bucs, Steelers and the Broncos. If he were to go to Pittsburgh, he wouldn’t have to worry about Dwayne Haskins or Mason Rudolph taking his spot as starter. Denver is also looking for an upgrade, so he probably wouldn’t have to worry too much about Drew Lock. In Tampa, he’s got a 2nd round pick looking on the sidelines. He’s just about to leave a similar situation in San Francisco. I doubt very much he’d want to go into another situation like that in Tampa. Don’t forget, he’s got to agree to come, it’s not always only about the money. No, I think he’ll probably go to the team that doesn’t get Rodgers.

  25. jehzsa Says:

When have the Bucs gone to two NFC title games in three years?

  26. Buddy The Elf Says:

Tyler Huntley Raven backup is who we need

  27. Bosch Says:

Give them the second rounder and throw in OJ Howard. Franchise Jensen and the O line will keep him upright and off of the injury report. Get Gronk to play another year and and he’ have protection and weapons. Bucs will win South. Upgrade at DC and a Championship is not out of the question.

  28. Th0t Says:

Tannehill, Jalen Hurts, Jameis or Trask >> Jimmy Creamed Jeans

  29. Bosch Says:

And of course retain Godwin. Give him his number 12 back as additional incentive. He still goes by CG12 on twitter.

  30. Knucknbuc Says:

Nooo he’s not good enough especially with a 25 million dollar contract to boot. Our defense isn’t good enough we could use that money to get more people on defense then this anchor. I know joe loves him eastern Illinois and Jimmy gq since he came out but I don’t want him on my team because he got carried by San Francisco’s defense and special teams to a super bowl and nfc championship game

  31. alaskabuc Says:

Ooo can we try and bring back Lovie and Mike Smith too? Stop this, JG is not a winner. He is a loser blessed to land on good teams.

  32. Jeff Says:

He’s not good enough to win at all but the best option available. Let Trask continue to develop behind him.

  33. Bucsfan951 Says:

    Jameis>Jimmy G.

  34. Waco Says:

I just think we have to look for a better option. I agree with @Jaymiss Pick6 Again (and not just because he’s my Uncle), I would rather trade for Carr. A second round pick (and large cap hit) for a guy that you’re not sure will be here for more than a year is a lot to pay.

  35. Gunnin4Ya Says:

    A few askew things here.

    1) Lombardo is just a former beat writer for a couple teams, if concrete, more credible national reporter’s would have it and in more detail. Whispers and theory, are not…news.

    2) Jimmy G sucks big time, and does NOT have the BA type downfield no risk or no biscuit arm or style, period.

    3) The Steelers and Broncos hold all the cards to first crack on plug and play AFC trading partners with more attractive draft ammo.

So Bucs would be wise and shrewd, to pursue the objectively trickier and FAR MORE talented option, that DOES have the BA style arm and capability for the offense, and can CLOSE…in Deshaun Watson. Makes much more short and long term sense.

  36. Listnfrmafar Says:

Buddy, I said the same thing in a few posts earlier. Huntly is a great choice.

  37. Pewter Power Says:

Bucs are a quarterback away from being a threat to any nfc teams super bowl hopes. Kirk cousins, jimmy g or whoever they try and trade for if the quarterback is from the nfc the gym will ask for a boatload of compensation. Don’t do it Licht

  38. ocala Says:

The Vikings would trade Cousins for next to nothing because of his horrendous contract.

  39. HC Grover Says:

It will end up being Gabbert.

  40. Marine Buc Says:

If we trade for GQ we better not give up more than a mid-round pick.

Hopefully the 49ers really just want to dump his salary because they feel Trey Lance is ready.

I will be disappointed if we give up a first and second round pick.

  41. Mort Says:

    LOL no.

  42. Craig Says:

No thank you. He has played at SF for five years and has one season that he played in all the games. That was back in 19.

He will be a waste of money because he will get hurt early and Trask will end up taking over anyway.

  43. Marine Buc Says:

Who is going to pay GQ’s $27 million dollar salary next season?

We don’t have that kind of money in the budget this year.

Especially for an often injured mediocre (at best) QB…

I would rather go with Gabbert/Trask/Griffen for one season and see how it goes.

  44. D-Rok Says:

With the current Bucs downfield-passing emphasis, I’m not sure Jimmy G is accurate enough to espouse and fulfill that philosophy. He is a decent game-manager and needs a strong run game to thrive as a QB. He is not the type to consistently be counted on to pass 50 times a game. Maybe 20-30 times at most. Still, he did learn under Brady, so who knows? I hope we find the best available option at QB – something we did NOT have to worry about the last 2 years. I’m hopeful the coaches will put the best possible product on the field.

    GO BUCS!!

  45. BradyBucs Says:

ENOUGH OF THE JIMMY G POSTS!

This guy is TERRIBLE as a top-dollar NFL QB.

He was *12TH* in passing yards with 20 TDs to 12 INTs.

    49ers are a run-first team.

  46. Ash Says:

Besides Jimmy being average at best he doesnt fit the scheme seems kinda far fetched to me.

Jimmy GQ stinks! If he is so good, why is he getting dumped in SF?

Because SF drafted Trey Lance pretty high in round 1 last year. Maybe it’s a knock on JG that they drafted Lance, but a team can win with Garoppolo, as SF has shown. He’s not going to make anyone forget Tom Brady, but we could do worse.

  48. adam from ny Says:

as i shrug my shoulders while typing, jimmy g really is most likely the answer…

we can flop around with him for a few years (2-3) as a competitive playoff team…it is possible with him…

you def resign godwin because he’s our deebo…

you keep the system in place because he has familiarity…

i think in that case you sign fournette…

he’s also a “face” guy…like brady, he’s good looking and this goes a long way too…

there are a boatload of reasons why this is probably the best viable option with what’s available…

also lynch is kind our guy – sorta – so hopefully he can work with us on this one before others…

he did help us grab wirfs if i remember correctly…

jimmy g is two steps back, but all are from tommy b…

we can go 10-7 next year, maybe 11-6 in a dream season, and grab the division – then anything can happen in the playoffs…

essentially jimmy g can hold down the fort, rather than us having an otherwise hard fall from grace here in bucsville

10-7 is feasible next year with jimmy gee

  49. adam from ny Says:

with jimmy g and his face we will also continue to get a decent amount of primetime games and games of the week…and with the crazy schedule and match ups we have…

jimmy’s face keeps continuity in a lot of places that don’t actually have anything to do with wins and losses…and the glazers will like that…

on a grand scale he is one of the best out there on the market when dealing with the loss of tom…

also i’d think the league isn’t going to want the bucs to plummet…i think they’ll want the bucs and pitt to do okay in bouncing back from tom and ben, while denver can simply wait another minute

    What he said

  51. Swampbuc Says:

Just great. Bucs fans will yearn for pick 6 machine Brian Griese.

  52. BucsFan81 Says:

Would rather start Trask and see what we have in him. Use that 2nd round pick and 23 million to help add to the defense.

  53. Mike Johnson Says:

I like Jimmy G personally. But he has Gabbert written all over him. That throw he mad going down in the end zone for an interception which coast the 9ers that game will live in infamy! Reminded me of..Sir J.Winston. Nahh, But, you never know. Bucs might throw a 2nd rder for him. Might be a mistake though.

  54. Snook Says:

Not a fit for our offense. If they change the offense for him, then go for it. If not, its a disaster waiting to happen.

  55. Buc king Says:

Not on my wish list….I think the smart move is to bring Winston back for the cheap have him n Trask compete for the job….Florida vs Florida st

  56. WalkdaPlank Says:

Still waiting for someone to show me a game where Jimmy G put the team on his back and actually “led” them to a win, rather than being carried by Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, or his defense.

  57. Show Me the TDs Says:

2nd round pick and throw in OJ and Darden. Addition by subtraction.

  58. Buc4evr Says:

Kind of reminds me of Jeff Garcia. Better than Carr or Winston, but no where near Rodgers or Wilson. Not sure he can play the vertical game Arians wants. Other than Rodgers, nobody is even close to Brady which is going to be depressing come next season.

  59. Eckwood Says:

Jimmy G is not a good QB …… did anybody watch the last series and if you watch Garoppolo you know what was going to happen,, he had no chance of driving the ball down the field in that game. Yeah he made a few good passes in that game seriously go back and look at the bad passes and it slows bad pass as he has gay men in game out in add his in ability to get the ball out of a pocket at times he’s just not a very good quarterback. By the way he’s not even close to a Jeff Garcia.

  60. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Anyone but Trask

  61. Tbbucs3 Says:

Let me rephrase, anyone but Trask or Mitch Trubisky

  62. C Says:

This team is done if Garoppolo is our QB.

  63. adam from ny Says:

    twitch blowfitzky…

    you know what…

    give me ryan fitzpatrick…………..yes fitzy!

  64. unbelievable Says:

Seems much more likely that he would be traded to one of those AFC teams versus NFC… unfortunately.

  65. unbelievable Says:

And the more I’ve thought about it, the less interested I am in him…

  66. steele Says:

Russell Wilson is the only one on the list who can put a team on his back and win a SB. Rodgers? It depends on his motivation, which has been questionable ever since he won just one SB. And that’s it. These two guys.

All the rest are mediocre place holders. Matt Stafford is one also. Look at his years as a Lion, where he had decent talent. If you have a fully loaded team and owners going all-in, mortgaging the future for a short run, then a Stafford could get you there. That is a tall order. (And Stafford may still blow it next week. I’m hoping he does a great face plant.)

  67. steele Says:

There is plenty of tape of Gabbert with the 49ers. That is exactly what you get if he’s the starter. It isn’t pretty. He, Jittery G, and Nick Mullens all made SF fans nervous. Trey Lance is a direct result of Lynch/Shanahan’s lack of confidence, plus local pressure to find a Kaepernick type, minus politics.

  68. adam from ny Says:

    bring fitzy back !

  69. Dan Williamson Says:

I would take Fitz over any not named Watson, Rodgers or Wilson.
