Josh McDaniels Talks Up Derek Carr

February 3rd, 2022

“Derek, you would f’ing love Tampa Bay. Damn near every town worth a sh!t there has a Hooters.”

If you believe the words from Josh McDaniels’ mouth, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr will not be on the trading block.

Then again, we are talking about McDaniels here. The guy isn’t exactly a pillar of honesty.

The shady former offensive coordinator for Bill Belicheat is the new big shot in Vegas. Joe was hoping that Carr, in the final year of his contract, might be trade bait and the Bucs could pounce. But McDaniels told Jim Miller of SiriusXM NFL Radio that he has big plans to build the Raiders with Carr as a foundation piece.

“Derek has impressed me for a long, long time,” McDaniels said. “It will be a really fun experience for me to have the opportunity to build this thing with him as our leader.”

Sure sounds like a no-go to Joe.

But that’s on face value. Joe doesn’t trust McDaniels as far as he can throw him. So Joe can only hope a leopard doesn’t change spots and that right after McDaniels got off the phone with Miller he texted Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht, seeing how much he could squeeze Licht in a swap for Carr.

I think it depends if McDaniels wants Jimmy G or if Russell Wilson wants to go to Vegas. Carr would be the best long-term option for us in my mind. We should’ve traded past the raiders and drafted him back then, but Licht could correct this mistake.

  2. Dew Says:

Maybe he’s just trying to pump up Carr’s trade value? If SF doesn’t want Garappolo going to our division they could do a 3 way. Carr to the Bucs & Garappolo to the Raiders. And everyone is happy.

  3. adam from ny Says:

mcdaniels doesn’t look like the kid he was in denver…

much older, and it looks like someone inserted belichik’s brain in his head, from the looks of that expression…

just give us carr and go away dude lol 🙂

  4. Lamarcus Says:

Yea I don’t see it. Why hand a team that won a SB and had Tom Brady your starting QB?

  5. Tye Says:

C4 would be a huge boost of confidence going into the 2022 season..
It would take a miracle for the Raiders to trade him here!

    🤔

  7. HC Grover Says:

Trask, Then draft his back up in the 5th round.

  8. Buc king Says:

    Nah I’m good on him…bring Watson..wilson..winston..

  9. Rod Munch Says:

Carr… 14 INTs, 13 fumbles, playing in one of the most boring, safe offenses you can play in.

Carr not only turns the ball over, he does that AND he’s afraid to make plays. The people who love Carr haven’t actually watched him, they’ve seen a game or two. The guy is streaky, rarely makes a play, and normally crumbles in big moments.

On the positive side he’s shown more guts than I thought he had by standing up for Gruden.

But if you’re going to spend draft capital on someone, Carr is near the bottom of my list, and would be stupid when you could get a more productive player for free, Winston.

  10. acey Says:

Carr is probably the best bet if the front otfice wants to get a QB outside of the org. Rodgers? Too expensive, + another old dude, + he’s not coming here unless we also get Davante. Russ? Too expensive, + we’re not really sure if he still has it. Watson? The obvious problems. Teddy B and Jimmy G are good quarterbacks, but they’re not gonna win us a game. Winston on a cheap 1 year to see if he’s left behind his days of baking guava turnovers might actually be viable, but the same could be said of Teddy or Jim on a 1 year. Carr took the clown show that was the Raiders this year to the playoffs on his own leadership, and he’s still relatively young. If you wanted to bring in a new long term starter now, Carr has to be the guy.

  11. Rod Munch Says:

Go to google and search for… ‘Derek Carr throws the ball away on 4th and goal. #Raiders gave this man $125 million.’

Situation… end of game, Raiders down 42-21, it’s 4th and goal from the 1, Carr scrambles around, then throws the ball out of bounds.

Got that… end of game situation, you MUST score, there’s nothing to lose even with a turnover… Carr chucks the ball out of bounds.

That’s what I don’t like about Carr, and it’s not just this game, you can find numerous plays on 4th down where he just throws the ball away.

    Why is he doing that?

Because if he throws an INT there it hurts his stats. That’s what the people who like Derek Carr don’t seem to understand. He plays to protect his stats. It’s why Raiders fans don’t like him. It’s also why causal fans look at his stat line and go, wow, he’s really good.

Carr can be good unless the pressure is on, then he crumbles. He’s the anti-Brady.

If you’re going to trade for someone, then get Cousins, I’m sure the Vikings would keep a huge part of his salary to get rid of him. Cousins is a screw-up, he also crumbles in big moments, but at least he doesn’t play to protect his stat line.

  12. steele Says:

Never trust the words of any coach or GM, when team moves are in play.

I fail to understand the hot air regarding Derek Carr. He’s been mediocre throughout his career, failed to elevate the Raiders, and he was directly responsible for some bigtime embarrassment losses, nearly as bad as Jittery G’s. Dumb turnovers, bad decisions, etc. And like Jittery G, he’s a good guy, good team guy, puts in effort and makes coaches happy. Mediocre, not special, not awful enough to immediately jettison. Carr is like the whole passle of this offseason’s bad QB free agents. Just mediocre.

McDaniels, a guy who liked Tim Tebow, will keep Carr for at least for a season.
Then Carr will blow it at some point. I wouldn’t stress if he’s not coming to TB.

Matt Stafford is a slightly better version of this same kind of QB, years and years of nothing much (and he may still face plant) but he’s being ridiculously protected this season and surrounded by super talent.

  13. Swampbuc Says:

No quarterback can overcome Cover Zero Receivers defense. Let the best WR in the league run uncovered at the game’s most critical time! That’s a scheme tht will get you hired aw a head coach, Todd.

So unless there is a public and convincing tribunal for what Todd’s Bowels did to the Bucs, and subsequent corrective actions, there isn’t a quaterback in the history of the universe, not even Tom Brady, that can overcome such incompetence.

  14. steele Says:

Russell Wilson singlehandedly kept the Seahawks competitive, for season after season, winning big games despite massive deterioration of the roster (without replenishment), increasingly stale and inept coaching, bad drafting and turmoil.

If he’s healthy, he’s got some years left. Like Brady, he needs a fresh new environment and coaching that doesn’t throttle his talent the way Pete Carroll’s boring system did.

  15. Hodad Says:

Don’t understand why Joe is so hot for Carr. He sucks. Mute point anyway. Licht, I hope ain’t trading for Carr. He’s got one year left on his deal, but if you’re going to give up draft capital for him, that means you’ll have to go all in on him. That means you’d be committed to giving him a massive new deal which he also would want. The Bucs aren’t going to do that. Sorry Joe, the Bucs will see what Gabbert, and Trask can do. If they fail badly, than you’ll see the Bucs look for a FA, or trade the following year.

  16. HC Grover Says:

I want to see Brady and Gronk in a Monster Truck heading for Rayjay.

  17. Buc4evr Says:

Hard pass on Carr. He can’t win in the playoffs. If Carr is the only vet available, let’s just go with Trask this year. Even Winston would be better than Carr.

  18. K_bassuka Says:

If Carr is a good QB then why would they trade him? Stop the non-sense Joe there’s a reason why good QBs don’t become available and this year is no different than others. A team is more likely tio over pay for a mediocre QB than getting a good QB for cheap.

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Rod Munch … ‘Carr is near the bottom of my list, and would be stupid when you could get a more productive player for free, Winston.’

What’s stupid Rod is believing that (1) Winston is a more productive player without checking your FACTS; and (2) that you could get him for FREE.

In his first 5 yrs (all with the Bucs), Winston’s record was 28-42 (started 70 games of 80 games) and he completed 61.2% of his passes, threw for 121 TDs, engineered SEVEN 4th qtr comebacks but had 88 INTs in that span.

In his first 5 yrs with the Raiders, Carr’s record was 32-46 (started 78 of 80 games) and he completed 62.8% of his passes, threw for 122 TDs, engineered SIXTEEN 4th qtr comebacks and had 54 INTs in that span.

So in the same timespan (their first 5 yrs), Derek Carr (1) has a better record (and on a team with a horrible defense); (2) started & played in more games; (3) is slightly better in completion percentage & number of TDs thrown; (4) engineered over TWICE as many 4th qtr comebacks; and (5) threw far fewer interceptions.

Why don’t YOU go to Google like you seem wont to tell everyone else to do and check YOUR facts next time. And when you do, you MIGHT come across an article or two that totally debunks your assertion that Bucs could get Winston for FREE. (His rehab is coming along great they say & he’s projected to cost MORE than any of the other free agent QBs out there; heaven only knows why).

  20. Proud Bucs Fan Says:

Or McDaniels could pull The bruce arains were he talks up the QB, then does not coach up QB. Then just let’s the QB walk with an expired contract.

  21. Defense Rules Says:

And BTW Rod, McDaniels won’t trade Carr (my opinion). Raiders have $21 mil in salary CAP right now & will need every bit of it to fix their mediocre defense (#26). Their offense was just mid-pack (#18) so Carr could use a couple more weapons also (although he did engineer THREE 4th qtr comebacks last season in leading them to a 10-7 record & a Wildcard seat in the playoffs, only to lose to the Bengals 26-19).

But Carr is a free agent in 2023 and will have a lot of suitors I suspect. Hopefully we give Kyle Trask a chance this season to see what he can do. IF he’s not the answer, then Derek Carr may be.

    ^^^^^^^
You forgot to mention that said QB threw 30 INTS and 7 pick-sixes his last year in Tampa. You forgot to mention that Sean Payton, one of the best coaches of his era, didn’t get much out of said QB. You forgot to mention said QB was 3rd string for an entire season. I’d say you left out a few details.

  23. Proud Bucs Fan Says:

    @joe in Michigan

That was the outcome. But does not change the fact that bruce arrogance talked up the QB. Said that he new the fix for the QB and sail he had all the answers.

Just because JW3 is a bad QB does not make bruce arrogance a good coach!

  24. Listnfrmafar Says:

I thought I heard McDaniels went to LV contingent that Carr stays.

  25. Steven007 Says:

DR, good job debunking munch. You “literally” (that’s his favorite word) got him with his own BS.

We’ll see how Trask works out.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Carr – I wanted him in the draft. If he turned out to be our guy, I could live with it. As of this moment though, I do not think he is the right guy.

    Wilson – In a heartbeat.

Rogers – In the running for league mvp again? Regardless of his age, he is worth it. If getting another ring meant another short term QB? In a heartbeat.

Winston – Not even as a backup, which I think he would be very good at…but past history could cause conflict in the lockerroom.

    Cousins – Absolutely horrible idea.

Trask – We have him. Is he the answer? Anything is possible, but given our history with you QBs, the odds are low. Still, we have one of the best olines in football and great WRs.

Draft – get an early QB to compete with Trask to increase our odds. DING. That might work.

The benefit with going with an established veteran winning QB is there doesn’t have to be competition.

If we go young, there has to be a REAL competition. (Not the illusion of it)

That said…I am curious as to what Arians could develop for us if he doesn’t retire.

You seem to give the impression that you don’t like him.

Trask could be a total bust. It doesn’t mean Arians is a bad coach.

Yes, Brady is the best in history. No, Arians did not develop him.

But…Arians had a very big hand in the rest of the team development. A head coach is not just about the QB. He is about the entire team and the coaches.

    Arians has already proven himself.

    Uuummm…

  31. Snook Says:

Duh. Pretty much common sense that McDaniels wanted Carr. Why would he take a job there and then trade the QB and have to battle everyone else looking for a QB? Anyone who though Carr was an option after McDaniels took that job is a moron.

  32. Rod Munch Says:

Defense Rules – Did you go and watch that video I said to watch? Of course not. Did you go and just type in, Carr throws away 4th down pass? Of course not.

Also, why are you hung up on completion percentage? You know that Winston, under Dirk and Arians, ran a deep ball offense, while Carr has run a short pass west coast offense. QBs in a deep ball offense throw harder to complete passes, while the west coast offense is literally built to get short easy passes. But you know all of this, you’re literally just cherry picking a stat, knowing that they’re not actually comparable.

As for the record… pre-Gruden, the Raiders were what, 11-5 or something? Gruden, as we know, is more or less a modern Jeff Fisher, goes somewhere between 7-9 and 9-7 every year. They were a middle of the road team, would be if it was Carr, Jeff Gracia, Jake Plummer, Teddy Bridgewater or any other middle of the road QB.

Finally, for comebacks… how many times did Winston actually get you a late 4th quarter lead only to have the defense collapse and lose the game? How many times did Winston lead a drive only to have the kicker miss his kick? While I know that you believed Ryan Smith and Chris Conte were all-pro 1st team starters, in reality, they stunk, and so did most of the defense for years and years and years.

Also, BTW, my main point is that Carr and Winston are pretty similar QBs, except Winston doesn’t cost anything to get, and will be a lot cheaper to keep, plus he’s younger and already knows the offense.

Carr isn’t anything special. No team runs off their 30-year old QB for no reason. If Brady was available? Sure, you go and get the GOAT, but you’re replacing Carr for who, Bridgewater? That’s the guy you want, the guy who lost his job to knockoff TB?
