Gamblers Will Grieve Tom Brady’s Absence

February 1st, 2022

Yes, Bucs quarterback Tom Brady has been good for Tampa and very, very good for Bucs fans. It’s been two years that Joe will never forget. The Bucs, for a change, were relevant — and winners.

It’s not just Bucs fans who are saddened by the reports Brady will retire. Apparently, Brady made gamblers a whole lot of money over the years.

For roughly the past three years, Joe cleaned up betting every week on Oklahoma, Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State. Joe always bet on them to cover and often on the over. They rarely disappointed (especially Oklahoma).

(Joe remembers his good friend, the late great “Big Dog,” Steve Duemig, the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, used to brag how he cleaned up on Florida when Steve Spurrier was coach. Duemig swore that Spurrier knew the point spread of every game the Gators covered.)

It seems Brady was that way for NFL gamblers. David Purdum and Tristan H. Cockcroft of BSPN have a few examples.

• Tom Brady covered the spread in more regular-season games — 186 — than any other quarterback in the Super Bowl era. Brady’s teams covered the spread in 60.0% of his starts, a cover percentage second behind only Joe Montana among quarterbacks with at least 100 starts. Brady finished 186-124-6 against the spread.

• Brady was the greatest underdog QB ever. He pulled outright upsets in 60% of his games as a betting underdog, going 30-20 straight-up. That’s the best winning percentage as an underdog of any quarterback with at least 20 starts in the Super Bowl era.

• Brady’s teams covered the spread in 71.4% of regular-season games as an underdog, the best covering percentage of any quarterback with a minimum of 40 starts as an underdog in the Super Bowl era.

Unfortunately, Joe never hopped on the Brady train when it came to wagering until this year. But Joe saw how Brady’s teams would cover often.

So now who do gamblers lean on? Joe Burrow? Pat Mahomes? Josh Allen? Matt Stafford?

Biff’s not a betting man. But, if he was, he’d bet the JBF web traffic will disappear along with TB12.
