Ali Marpet Retires

February 27th, 2022

Shocking news.

Bucs Pro Bowl left guard Ali Marpet retired today, as he posted on his Instagram account.

Marpet has been a fixture on the Bucs offense line since he was drafted in 2015 in the second round. Marpet said on his statement only that he planned to serve the community and hinted he planned to stay in the area.

Marpet is 28.

Joe will have more on this stunning news.

Huge loss. Let the rebuilding begin.

  2. Jersey buc Says:

    Wtf man!🤦🏻‍♂️

  3. Ash Says:

Wow it is looking like a rebuild now. Didn’t see this coming.

  4. VabucSINCE’97 Says:

Cant believe he did us like this. I blame Tom 😂😂😂 won a Super Bowl for some of these guys and it got them afraid of being losers again lol I have at least 4 more offensive players leaving. BUT IT IS BRADY FAULT. KINDA wish we never got him knowing this would happen to my team as soon as he left smh o boi it’s gon be hard watching us this season coming up

  5. UKBuccaneer Says:

One of my all-time bucs. So saddened to read this. But as a young guy, getting out of the game wealthy and healthy is all you can ask. A pro-bowler and super bowl champ. Hell of a ride, Ali.

  6. Steven007 Says:

Wow, complete surprise. Must be health related, preventatively one would assume. One more major issue for Mr. Licht…

  7. VabucSINCE’97 Says:

Twenty freaking eight bro 😡😡😡😡😡 can’t believe he quit on us.that’s what it is idc I’m pissed no reason in MY MIND to retire he’ll he’s healthy and all😂😂 wtfffffffffffffffffffff whole draft statergy goes in the freaking trash now free agency is totally diff now

  8. Listen Linda! Says:

    Fake news

  9. Joe in Michigan Says:

Best of luck in all future endeavors, Mr. Marpet! I don’t blame him, the wear and tear of football on the body is tremendous, over time.

  10. Richard Dickson Says:

Yeah, I can’t imagine why a player at one of the positions most susceptible to lifelong CTE complications might decide to step away while he’s still got his health. He should be willing to suffer for the rest of his life just so we don’t need another lineman this season!

  11. Bucfan Says:

    WOW, just WOW!!

  12. Will Says:

Well that was shocking. That also just gave Cappa and Stinne leverage in their negotiations. Going to be a few interesting off-season.
Thanks for the great times Ali enjoy your retirement..

  13. Smashsquatch Says:

Shocker. Thanks for the memories Ali!

  14. Derek Says:

Crazy, don’t think anyone saw this coming. But he was saying stuff about mental health this past year

  15. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Who are we to judge this choice. Sucks for us as fans but the dude always played hard and has been a great Buc. He’s a smart guy and probably has other goals in life. It’s brutal in the NFL trenches. Better to get out before a very valuable brain turns to mush.

  16. Marine Buc Says:

What a bummer… I had hoped we would still have a strong line this year if we could just bring back Cappa and replace Jenson.

Ali Marpet is a class act and has been a great Buc.

    Adios Amigo…

    Let the rebuild begin!!!

  17. BucsFan81 Says:

That sucks loved Ali. Great player and Buc. Not like we have a QB for him to block for anyways. Going to pretty much need a whole new offensive line now. This team will look completely different come August.

  18. Nano107 Says:

People that get mad at someone for retirement are idiots

  19. Oxycodoms Says:

Might as well bring jameis back now

  20. SC. Bucs Fan Says:

I wish him well whatever he does

  21. Marine Buc Says:

The Bucs still owe Ali Marpet @ $7 million of guaranteed signing bonus.

I wonder how this will affect to salary cap…

His Salary is $10 million for 2022 – so at least we will get that money added to the cap.

  22. BuxfaninTX Says:

I’m sure that Aaron Donald is happy

  23. mark2001 Says:

Oxy…. more like, might as well start Trask.

  24. Chrisonthecape Says:

I see a return to the sucanneers sooner than I expected. Oh well, it was a nice break from the usual.

  25. Proud Bucs Fan Says:

Looks like another very good player that is running away from bruce arrogance.

  26. Oxycodoms Says:

True Mark. Wonder if brady knew

  27. mark2001 Says:

ESPN says that it was health concerns.

  28. Arn Platz Says:

The great protection the Bucs O line provides a qb would have been a great selling point for any FA QB. Damn, I see more leaving, let the rebuild begin

  29. Jeff Says:

That last concussion scared him. He’s a VERY smart man to walk away now. 28, rich and lovin life.

  30. TBD Says:

That last comment is so frikking ridiculous. Ali loves Bruce. He has his reasons and they are good ones.

Much love #74 and thank you for being GREAT in TB as a Buccaneer.

  31. Todd Says:

Full scale rebuild we need two guards a center, QB, a WR 2 , a top CB , a top TE , JPP and Suh replacements with our cap space it’s unlikely to fill all these holes

  32. TBD Says:

To clarify, my comment was pointed towards the last one at 4:04pm.

  33. alaskabuc Says:

Congratulations to Ali on retirement, he will probably get a camper van and ukulele his was across the country, Joel Haeg style.
Purely coincidence that Ali left shortly after Brady, or are we about to witness a large abandoning of ship this off-season?

  34. Cobraboy Says:

He’s a smart guy to go out before his noddle gets further rattled. Plus, I’ll bet he saved all his money.

The odds of Jensen, Cappa & Stinnie getting re-upped just went up.

  35. JimmyJack Says:

Weve done quite well at finding interior lineman and fans think this calls for a total rebuild? Some of yall are pathetic.

  36. TBD Says:

Agreed, Cobraboy. Need to resign all 3.

  37. adam from ny Says:

    tom retired……….and now he’s taking prisoners…

    holy moly…wtf

    🙁

  38. Adrnagy Says:

Ok. Good for him. Now next man up. Licht sign cappa and stinnie.

  39. mark2001 Says:

I have a feeling Jeff was on the money. Multiple concussions over the years is nothing to take lightly. He has plenty of money…. now he is saving years of more wear and tear on his body. I don’t blame him. His well being is our loss. But wish him well.

  40. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Any of you losers saying he quit on the team need to get your priorities in life straight. First of all, he doesn’t owe us anything. He has the right to do what is best for him and his family. We all have that right. The fact that you are so selfish that you can’t understand that says a whole lot about you. Second, you don’t know what’s going on with him mentally or physically. His body might be beat up. Maybe he’s showing signs of memory loss. Unless you are his doctor or psychologist, you shouldn’t say anything. He was a major contributor to bringing a championship to Tampa. Instead of being grateful for what he delivered to us, you want to bash him for not doing more. Unbelievable

  41. adam from ny Says:

    sign ’em all…

stinnie or cappa can be bookended by donny & big red…

which ever one works best on the left side…

    probably stinnie…

keep the cappa & wirfs tandem together on the right side

  42. adam from ny Says:

    watch…

ali retired, and now here comes tom all eager to play………lol

  43. Gettinthebucs Says:

Definitely appreciate the years he gave us. Really sucks he only got play on a couple good teams though. 28 and a millionaire, dude did it right.

  44. adam from ny Says:

toms got all bucs thinking to now retire at the top of their game…

    or close to it

  45. GenocideD Says:

Too early for April fools? 🙁

  46. cmurda Says:

Oh my goodness. This is painful. The hits keep coming and this one stings more than the Brady news. Brady we saw coming. I hope he’s okay. There has to be more to this.

  47. SC. Bucs Fan Says:

He is young, he is rich and he is healthy. Why play until you can’t walk.

  48. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I keep thinking this is a joke. Super smart decision by him but whoa!!! That hurts.

  49. Anonymous Says:

    “zincs offensive line?”

  50. cmurda Says:

Ok. my optimism is waning. I’m starting to now think we are unable to avoid the inevitable rebuild. This sucks man. We shot our load, got that Championship at least and now its back to mediocrity at best. I hope not but all of the negative Nancys are going to trumpet their “I told you so’s now”.

  51. James west Says:

    Well this sux

  52. cmurda Says:

  57. WalkdaPlank Says:

Marpet was a huge part of the winning formula that got us a Super Bowl, and a reason that Brady signed here in the first place, to get protected.

He got his ring, still has his health, and with Brady gone he wants out. I can’t say I blame him. Guy was a huge steal in the draft, some of Licht’s best work.

    Wish him well.

  59. Listnfrmafar Says:

It’s a cue, Brady I taking Gronk, Marpet, Jenson , Godwin and Suh with him to Miami.

  60. Roy T. Buford Says:

Historical run, won a SB in his home stadium, while protecting the GOAT QB. Can’t top that. Go out on top, and with great health. Makes sense to me.

  61. Bird Says:

Best guard in bucs history !

And yes the health comments are right on. Multiple concussions no bueno
Thanks Ali! Good for him to walk away early then too late

  62. Bucs Guy Says:

That’s money to keep Cappa. Maybe they keep both Jensen and Cappa now. Either way we knew we would be drafting an interior lineman. It’s now for the left side instead of the right.

  63. Listnfrmafar Says:

Hawaiian, or maybe he is doen with BA & BL. David said it, “TURMOIL!!!”

  64. HC Grover Says:

    Bummer. Who’s next?

  65. adam from ny Says:

only problem here is maybe ali spoke to his fellow o-linemen and in private discussions they said:

“dude we’re outta here man…we’re taking the money in, say, cinnci and dipping brother…it’s you, donny and young wirfsy”

maybe he knows a bit more than we fans know…

and even more than the bucs high ups know

  66. SufferingSince76 Says:

    CRAP!!!! 😳

  67. Rod Munch Says:

    What the F….

Never trust someone who plays a ukulele.

  68. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Wow. I mean, he’s gotta do what he’s gotta do for himself, but man, I did not expect to log on and see this. This is definitely a shock. I hope the Bucs knew about this well in advance. Gonna miss Marpet, he truly was a ROCK on that O-line. This hurts as a fan to know our stud O-line is definitely weaker now.

  69. DBS Says:

So you are starting Gabbert? See Ya.

  70. Tony Says:

Seriously what the hell is going on there now?

  71. donuts Says:

Rebuild is the right way to think. I think we should move on from all the heavy salaries JPP/Suh and see what Trask has to offer. Resigning Cappa seems like a bigger priority now. I wonder if Stinnie or Cappa can play on the LG spot.

  72. Hodad Says:

How much cap space we save?

How much cap space we save?

    ———–

If I understand it correctly, this is basically treated as if you cut a guy, but you can choose for it to be a pre-June 1st transaction or after-June 1st transaction. If it’s After June 1st, the Bucs get $10m in cap savings, before-June 1st, it’s $5.6m savings. Again, you don’t need to wait until those dates, my understanding is you can designate it, and get the cap savings for free agency or to resign someone now.

If anyone is reading this and they know I’m wrong, let me know, because I’d like to verify the info, but I think what I’m writing is correct.

  74. Arn Platz Says:

I want to see if licht has any more magic, he is batting almost a thousand with his picks and signings. In licht we trust

  75. Tony Says:

Can we see if Arians is willing to play guard?😀 If they want to keep Donovan maybe they should consider moving him to guard & then draft another tackle to put with Wirfs.

  76. NDOG is an Idiot Says:

Can you imagine retiring Wealthy and Healthy at 28?? Thanks for the 7 great years!! Cheers to a long healthy retirement Ali

  77. Beeej Says:

How many concussions has he had? A former Buc (linebacker I think) lives a mile or so down the road from my cousin. The Buc in his 50’s, brain mostly swiss cheese. Now and again, he’ll get outside of the fenced area and they’ll have to walk him back into the house before he steps in front of a car. That’s what happens when you have too many concussions. Scot Brantley is a prime example

  78. Buczilla Says:

Good luck Ali. Guess we need a new guard. Does he still get his guaranteed money and does it effect our cap? If so, that’s bs and they need to do away with that nonsense.

  79. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

WTF. Something ain’t right in Denmark.

  80. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

On second thought. It does make sense if it’s health related/CTE prevention.

  81. Bojim Says:

Smart man. Thanks for being here and all the best.

  82. MadMax Says:

FK! Didnt see that coming…..All good Ali, Mad respect brother!

  83. Irishmist Says:

How dare he put his brain above our entertainment?

  84. bucschamp Says:

What? does he have a model wife too?

  85. Bosch Says:

One word comes to mind. Class!

  86. Bush's Coke Spoon Says:

Last year, I said the Bucs should have given Stinnie a multi-year contract. Now his price just went up.

Here’s hoping that Marpet wasn’t using Antonio Brown’s financial advisor.

Thank you, Ali! Best wishes for your future.
