Who Succeeds Tom Brady?

January 29th, 2022

Bucco Bruce Arians.

It almost feels like a two-night stand — the hot chick you picked up at Undertow and she stuck around for a couple of weeks.
That’s sort of the vibe Joe gets with the retirement of Tom Brady, which BSPN reported today. Jeff Darlington, son of Pinellas County, has an “in” with Brady’s camp. So if he reported it, Joe believes it. Remember, Darlington was the first national guy to suggest Brady could come to Tampa Bay two winters ago.

The highs were the highest. A Super Bowl in one year then Brady damn near got the injury-riddled Bucs to the NFC championship, fighting his arse off to get the game tied when the Bucs should have been blown out.

Joe remembers seeing the confetti fly after the Bucs won the Super Bowl. After getting eye-raked week after week through the Lost Decade, to see the Bucs upset the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl in their own crib, Joe still has a hard time believing it.

So now we are in the post-Brady era. Is it Kyle Trask time or will the Bucs go out and get a new starter? Remember: Trask was not active for any game this year, not one NFL snap.

What does Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians want to do?

Provided Arians is even coaching the Bucs.

Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, David Carr, or they go with Trask

  2. fern Says:

    Joe being doom and gloom
Life goes on still have some pieces

  3. Killian Says:

Trade for Rodgers or Wilson. Or see what Trask can do.

  4. Ray Says:

Aaron Rogers, Derek Carr, or mAybe Matt Ryan or Baker Mayfield

  5. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Rodgers? Wilson? Before this week I was worried Wilson would pair up in NO with Peyton. That would have been …..problematic. Don’t have to worry about that now.

  6. New England Patriots Fan Says:

You should look at the best vet available Cousins Wentz Rodgers Watson Wilson or Carr. But Wilson or Rodgers or Watson will require 3x1st.

  7. T REX Says:

    No one.

That is the sound of the pirate ship sinking.

Light sucked before Brady…he will suck after.

    Brady was the whole team.

Huge rebuild incoming. Lots of dead money too

  8. Cobraboy Says:

Gonna be a really interesting offseason as the Bucs rebuild. Or reload.

I also expect Gronk, JPP and Suh to retire. Not so sure about Jensen yet.

    What a fantastic two-year run.

  9. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Whatever happens we know it won’t be Gabbert.

  10. Nutterbuccer Says:

Let trask have a shot. He was a second round pick for a reason. Build back the rest of the roster.

  11. EA Says:

Russell Wilson and let him cook.

  12. Tye Says:

Best wishes to Tom and Thanks for the remarkable 2 years you have made the Bucs a winning team!

We can only hope that Kyle Trask is the answer… There is no standout QB in this draft and nearly all the qbs that might be on the move have down sides:
    Watson – drama
Rogers – age, diva and can’t play in big games
Wilson – play seems declining the past 2 years
Dalton – plays up and down like many struggling QBs
Carr – (the best option) still has not proven he can play consistent…

Trask develops into a quality QB then the Bucs are set for a decade and not just 1-2 years!

  13. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Trask put up 46 on Bama in the SEC Championship game-he is a player.

  14. CondorWolf00007 Says:

Hmmm… Brady is not quite 45, but guess the scrimshaw was on the wall for the pending crew in 22. Anyone but Unjolly ‘ol Rodgers then

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    If we can’t bring in a top QB….let’s give Trask a shot……who knows…..build a team around him.

But, of all the options, I like Carr…..

  16. crazybucs_CL Says:

Right now the only “soothing” news for Bucs fans will be if BA;Toodd; and the rest of the FAKE coaching staff RETIRED/RESING.
Do it and save the shame.

  17. VSyl Says:

Tom was a 6th round pick that no one put faith on. Maybe trask could surprise us and be at least reasonable. I say we try Trask

  18. Cobraboy Says:

Wilson, Rodgers would cost 3 #1’s, and Carr also a high price.

If the team resolves the cap problems next season by not kicking cans down the road and depleting draft capital and future cap space, 2023 might be brighter.

We all knew this day would come. Time to pay the piper.

I’m OK with it. Maybe 2022 will be the year Trask gets his chance after spending a full year as Brady’s true understudy. I’m not looking forward to rook QB mistakes, but it is what it is.

  19. Hodad Says:

Who succeeds Arains could be more like it. BL is about to get hired by J Ville, now he stays, and succeeds Arains. Arains ain’t hanging around without Tom either. My guess now is BA follows him out the door, and Lefty takes over. Brady made his decision now so we wouldn’t lose BL. We also won’t be losing Bowles, or any other asst’s if BL becomes HC. I’m sure if Trask has any future as Tampa Bay’s QB, keeping Lefty would be a must. Makes sense doesn’t it.

  20. Dyno-White ! # 45 Says:

That last pass to Evans deserved the happy ending. I know he’s at least close to being a Billionaire, age or not, there is not a team in the NFL that wouldn’t take him for a one year encore.

  21. Miller5252 Says:

Not Rodgers! Go get Wilson or set everything up to get him next year. Carr wouldn’t be bad. Crazy sad day to be a Buc fan! Those 2 years went toooooooo fast

  22. Posey99 Says:

Arians already stated he was coming back. We still have a great core. You sign Godwin and we have a prime spot for a veteran QB to want to come here, but I believe trask will get his shot. Big time QB gurus on this staff. Looking forward to Arians calling plays again.

  23. Cobraboy Says:

I’d prefer Bowles over Leftwich if Arians retires.

But I want Bowles to Leftwich to get a HC job elsewhere for the 3 #3’s the Bucs would get. If BOTH leave for a HC job, the Bucs would get 4 additional #3’s the next two drafts! That’d be quite a haul!

  24. DBS Says:

No Drama Queen Rodgers. We already know he will fold in the playoffs.

  25. Defense Rules Says:

Seeing a lot of QB names pop up to take Brady’s place, but seriously doubt any of those will end up here.

o Derek Carr is under contract with the Raiders for 2022 (for only $19.9 mil). Supposedly Josh McDaniels has agreed to coach the Raiders & I seriously doubt he’d get rid of Carr (in his 1st coaching year). Carr is a FA in 2023 though, so he MIGHT be a player for us then.

o Russell Wilson is under contract with the Seahawks through 2023 & he sports a massive contract (he’d be expensive to trade for). Besides, he’s probably not a really fit for BA.

o Aaron Rodgers is under contract with the Packers in 2022 with another massive contract (he’d be way too expensive to trade for). And somehow I can’t see he & BA getting along.

o There are tons of other QBs available next year, and we could probably have our pick of Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, Tyrod Taylor, Jacoby Brissett, Joe Flacco, Mitch Trubisky, even Terry Bridgewater. None of those guys are the future. Give Trask a shot and see what he can do. Just don’t require him to throw it 50-55 times a game.

  26. alaskabuc Says:

I know there are questions about Russ being able to play in Arian’s offense, with his propensity for leaving pocket and improvising pass plays. Personally I am willing to see if that marriage could work if we can lure Russ away. BA would definitely have to adjust to some or Wilson’s improv and Wilson would have to grow as a pocket passer, but this still feels like out best chance to win now.
Thanks for the memories Tom, it was over too soon.

  27. Buc92’ Says:

Watson , Russ, Carr … Or let Trask shine & that is all folks lol

    GoBucs!

  28. Rayjay1122 Says:

    Oh no! We suck again!

  29. View from 132 Says:

    Deshaun Watson on Line 1.

  30. Defense Rules Says:

Cobraboy I’m with you on Bowles over Leftwich as our next HC if BA opts to retire. Bucs’ fan forget what happened when we signed Schiano. We were way late getting to the party that year (hiring a new HC) and we didn’t exactly get the pick of the litter. Schiano ended up having to put together a whole coaching staff with very little time to do it (and he was coming from college, not the pros). Don’t want to ever go through that again.

IF BA retires and Bowles stays, I’d bet that almost all of this coaching staff would be retained. And that’d be a good thing because continuity is essential for our young players IMO. They’ve improved steadily (on both sides of the ball) and should continue to improve even more this year & next.

Besides, if BA ‘retires’ as HC, I’ve felt all along that he’d stay on in a new capacity (I call it ‘President of Football Operations’ but whatever). He’s a treasure trove of information that we need to hold onto. And the Glazer Boyz will.

  31. Tackleblockwin Says:

I’d be fine trading for Carr. Otherwise take a year to see what Trask can do.

  32. Anonymous Says:

Green Bay is not trading Rodgers to the NFC.

  33. SufferingSince76 Says:

Crazybucs, it will be a miracle the day you post an intelligent comment on this site.

  34. JimmyJack Says:

The best plan in mine opinion is to take this year to play more young players while burning off dead CAP.

If you get a high priced QB it seems like it would be a one year window. Maybe 2 tops…..Next year you could set yourself up much better to have a bigger window.

Lets not get used to a QB coming in and winning a ring in year 1. Its not very realistic unless maybe your bringing in the very best ever.

  35. Nprbuc Says:

Jeeze! Talk about doom and gloom. Yeah. We all wanted Brady to stay another year. Now. It isn’t happening. So many commenters have us heading for the toilet bowl. We STILL have a good fb team to put on the field. There are a lot of positions on a team beside QB. We have many of those positions covered. One of the top O lines in the game, competent RB’s who can flash, WR’s. All weak areas can be filled through drafts, Free Agency and Licht picking guys guys off their coaches. I’m not ready to throw ink the towel and sit in my room and cry. We have a good football team. I will trust in BA and Licht to make it better.

  36. Bqen green Says:

Cobraboy, that might be the dumbest thing you’ve ever said on here. Todd bowels? Are you kidding? The dude can’t gameplan. He had a head coaching gig. How’d that go. You or Ben could’ve coordinated that defense last year. Bowels defensive calls directly lead to the Rams loss. Explain to Ben again why you blitz 44% of the time, with an offense that scores 30 a game. Wtf do you think belichick told his defense to get the f back consistently? Because he knew he had Tom Brady, and most offenses can’t matriculate down the field.

  37. Bqen green Says:

Ben is starting to doubt your sanity cobra boy. Medicated Pete and I will gladly take you for a mental health evaluation. At least they could hold you for 24 hours and make a determination

  38. captivajim Says:

So , now we’ll see whats behind door # 2 hey coach …?? This should Not surprise anyone who’s been listening to , and watching Brady’s body language…

So we’ll see what all these coaches ( who many were defending this season) come up with..After all ; just a rebuild -right coach….

Glaziers should take opportunity to CLEAN HOUSE-starting with BA , BL , and lets not forget Bowles !!!!!!

  39. Statguy Says:

Let Russ cook, more years left, he has the supporting cast, best team player

  40. Bucamania Says:

And just like that the Bucs are back to being a have-not team. It was a fun two years.

  41. Chris Flores Says:

Brady showed the bucs what it takes to win. Sign a quarterback that you know has won better than 50% of his games and get him up to speed quickly

  42. HC Grover Says:

Don’t matter now. Put Trask in and build a team on Defense etc. We ain’t going anywhere next year anyway.

  43. Bucs96NYC Says:

The Glazers gave up 2 1s & 2s for a coach. That gave us our 1st Super Bowl. This is the time to make another bold, unafraid trade. Call the Texans & negotiate a trade for that stud QB named Watson!

If the Bucs can go out on a limb & draft Winston then bring him back after he f**ked up. Then sign AB, Stevenson, etc. Do the same w/ these allegations w/ Watson & MAKE THE TRADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
