Report: Tom Brady Cares About Fulfilling Bucs Contract

Man, what a drain it is to hear all the negative vibes about Tom Brady retiring.
It feels like some people are trying to will it to happen, or they are just sky-is-falling types.
Joe suspects these are the same people who said, “Tom Brady would never play in Tampa.”
Former NFL quarterback Brady Quinn is a busy media guy with a lot of contacts via his various gigs. During a Bucs-Rams postgame chat on CBS Sports HQ, Quinn said he’s been talking to multiple members of the Bucs organization and shared that there are mixed feelings there about Tom Brady’s future.
“I heard from some people within the organization that there was a lot of people who were coming to the [Rams] game that wouldn’t normally be coming to a playoff game, at least one that’s not, you know, a [conference championship] or going to a Super Bowl. And it led many to believe that this indeed could be his final game that he’s played in the NFL,” Quinn said.
“There’s a lot of things that [Tom Brady] is contemplating. I know one of the things that was discussed was potentially the fact that he’s under contract for another season. He’s the type of man that says, ‘Hey, when I make an agreement, when I put something down on paper like that, I want to own up to it.'”
Joe finds both Quinn nuggets interesting.
First, who was in attendance at the game that sparked this-must-be-the-end thinking? That’s very strange.
Second, Joe totally could see Brady feeling he has to fulfill his contract through the 2022 season. And perhaps the only reason he signed the extension through 2022 was because he already had his family’s blessing?

I could see this happening. There is no way Brady leaves the Bucs without having discussed an exit plan. He wouldn’t leave them high and dry. This was known when he signed; Brady will eventually retire as a Buc and that a plan needed to be sought out the second he walked in the door. My feeling is that they truely believe in Trask and the plan the whole time was to have him sit as the third this year, compete with Gabbert for the 2 next year, then start year three after Bradys contract and career ran out. Its the only logical reason for them having drafted Trask so high. To give Arians and staff time to mold him the way BA wants him. Pretty insightful stuff from his book shows that he is pretty picky with the QBs that come out of college. There is something there for sure

I don’t recall a time that there wasn’t speculation on him retiring. Brady might be the only icon to outlive his Madame Tussauds wax look-a-like!

This story is beginning to bore me. Even without Brady Buccaneers will be one of the top eight teams in the NFC and nearly a short bet to make the playoffs next year. Fans are being undeservingly crawled toward arians who along with Jason brought them a winner and a team that Brady wanted to play for. There is absolutely no reason to panic. Players want the tax break they get in Tampa. They love the weather and the team now has a loyal fan base for the first time, one that is substantial. I love Tom Brady right fans need to be listening to what he’s saying which is his gratitude for the effort all these guys made.

JBF has been publishing Brady articles for the past several days that argue BOTH WAYS. This one seems to argue that Brady made a commitment and that he’ll honor that commitment.
A previous article ‘Tom Brady Decision could Spark Major Changes’ seems to argue what MIGHT happen IF Brady does retire.
Fact is that no one knows what decision Tom Brady will make; probably not even Tom Brady at this point. So it’s ALL pure speculation, for now. It’s the media playing the ‘What If’ game. Don’t blame them; it’s ‘what they do’ nowadays when there’s nothing concrete to report.
As an aside, PERHAPS Tom Brady’s contract was extended to 2022 not because he’d already made the decision to play another year but rather to give the Bucs more room to spread his 2021 contract over more years. And in the process, free up CAP space in 2021 to sign better players so that we could compete again for the championship.
Brady’s CAP hit in 2021 was only $10.5 mil, but his Dead Money was $50 Mil. His CAP hit would’ve been much higher if he hadn’t done a 2022 contract. His contract is also ‘voidable’ out through 2025, and we owe him a bunch for accepting a ‘lower salary’ these past 2 years. Newsflash: Bucs will owe him mega-millions for several years to come because of our ‘kicking the can down the street’. He’s not the only one who did contracts like that to allow us to go ‘all-in’ in 2021. Everything has a price, even when ‘smoke & mirrors’ are involved.

More than anything Brady is a stand-up guy. He is old school in the respect of if you tell someone you are going to do something then do it. A lot of this retirement speculation is Brady letting it play out and maybe the Bucs give him a little more control than he already has which seems like a lot for a player. Is there someone out there not already a Buc or a Buc free agent that Brady really wants in here. We all know how he pulled the strings on the A.B. Deal. Sure he wants to take time and spend time with his family, but the Bucs are contenders again next year with Brady back. He arguably played at an extremely high level maybe better than anyone last year. Here’s a fact though, had that been the 2002 Bucs defense out there last week this conversation would not be occurring right now. We would be getting ready to host the NFC Championship game on Sunday and most likely Super Bowl bound. But we have Todd Bowles and a horrific back end and no pass rush. Maybe that is why Brady needs a month to think about things.

Joe isn’t “telling” anyone what Brady is going to do because Joe has zero idea what Brady is going to do. That doesn’t mean Joe isn’t going to share when national media guys who have contacts with the Bucs explain what they are hearing from inside One Buc Palace.

The most interesting part no one is paying attention to is the incapable medical stuffs at Bucs. This season has been derailed largely because of injury. This is a team capable of beating any team in the league by putting 50 Bergers has there been full team on the field. Injury happens, but a good medical stuffs manage those from being a disaster! Several injuries happened during the OTA and minicamp. Brady protected the offensive line not the other way around. People talk big about mahomes, josh Allen etc well they are good QBs but we have a QB of ages and the best you will ever have. Injury and a stupid defensive call made this QB think about an undisciplined football team named Bucs. Brady will return I am positive and let’s reload as he wants. Let’s go Bucs.

It may have something to do with what Godwin does. I believe now that Leftnut is gone Brady will have full reign of the offense, BA is too lazy to game plan. No matter what it appears this is his last season and he wants to win. I see him asking to be released and go to Tenn. with his buddy, coach of the year Vrabel. I also think when Brady was quoted saying “You’re keeping the fing guy!” He was talking to Vrabel about Tannahill. Makes more sense than 49ers, would he use that tone with Shanahan? Vrabel is a friend. Henry, Brown, Jones and bring Gronk? With their D that’s a winning combination.

Tampa committed to Brady. The Patriots wouldn’t. That is what he wanted 2 years ago. He’s spoke about that commitment several times. There is a great mutual relationship between him and the Bucs. If nothing else, out of respect for the Bucs organization he’ll be back. And oh yeah, win the division again and host a playoff game. Take that to the bank.

Brady’s contract will not be the deciding factor. Quinn should’ve attended some calsses at Norte Dame. Brady’s contracts have always been about freeing up money for other players. He’s not going to tell his wife, and kids he has to come back because he’s under contract. How silly.

It’s just that they just want the owners & the coaching staff to care just as much as they do because they don’t have to go to the games & spend the $$$$ on the food & the drinks when they just watch it at home if they realize they’re gonna be supporting a team that they actually do care about & the owners & coaching staff don’t. Good point here. Brady said he wants to play until 45 and that was even before he joined the Bucs. He wouldn’t have signed two years without talking to His wife about it first. He doesn’t seem like the type of guy that would walk away from an age commitment and a contract commitment. This is more likely keeping him in the news for MVP votes and the Brady brand. Rob is settled in as well and has a restaurant here etc. Seems more likely they both stay

Kyle Trask lead the NCAA in every stat in 2020 and plus he played in the SEC with 43 touchdowns and only 8 picks with over 4,000 yards!! Brady signed the deal last offseason to help with the cap, and pocket a bunch of money up front and get a raise. I’m not sure I’d read a lot into it. The Bucs needed to make a ton of moves to get cap space, and Brady likes having that rep that he’s a team player.
I’m leaning towards Brady coming back, but I just wouldn’t read anything into that deal.

Brady will be back because the NFL gives him the platform to sell his other businesses and he’s keeping an eye on his records. Mahomes is on pace to wipe many of Bradys records, so no way he retires this year, but I believe he’s leveraging the conversation to get his key guys back and adding a few players that are needed to win that ring again. Tom is the best QB to ever be a Buc and Trask should be taking notes, if he’s going to be the future IMO. BA will be gone after this next year and we will be rebuilding with a young QB. The current team’s financial situation is not sustainable for a long run in this division, so we have one more shot at it. #GoBucs

At the very least, regardless of when Brady makes it official, expect the Buccaneers to carry Brady on the roster until June 2nd. If they do not modify his contract the way this would work is Brady would remain on the cap at $20.27 million until June 2nd at which point they would put him on the retired list. Brady at that point would count for $8 million on the 2022 salary cap and $24 million on the 2023 salary cap.
The more likely option would be a contract renegotiation for salary cap purposes. Under this scenario the Buccaneers would lower Brady’s base salary and roster bonus from $10.4 million to $1.12 million and remove any incentives from the contract. This would lower his salary cap charge from $20.27 million to $9.12 million. They would still have to carry him until June and at that point the $8 million/$24 million salary cap split would occur.
The benefit of this strategy is that it immediately opens up around $11.2 million in cap space that can be used to help acquire a quarterback in a trade immediately at the start of the new league year. There should be names available this year such as Aaron Rodgers, Deshaun Watson, Jimmy Garoppolo, Kirk Cousins, and Derek Carr and the cap space would be very beneficial in acquiring one of those players. If they opt to turn to 2nd round pick Kyle Trask to run the show then the added money can be used to keep as much talent as possible around him.
