Only One Team Has Success

January 25th, 2022

No confetti.

Yesterday in his final 2021 season media availability, Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians was still fighting the depression that comes with a playoff loss.

Joe thought Arians put it perfectly when asked if this was a successful season, despite falling three wins short of another Super Bowl title. Arians said only one team can brag about having a successful season.

“Yeah, I think with everything that went on this season – it’s never a success unless you’re putting rings on your finger and confetti is coming onto your head,” Arians said. “But that only happens for one team.

“But I’m very, very proud of this team. We did not reach our goal, but I like the way we fought to get there.”

There were individual successes. Tom Brady, at 44, leading the league in passing is one of the greatest athletic feats in sports history. Playoff Lenny became a true, NFL No. 1 back adept at running and catching. Mike Evans continued to drive toward Canton.

So yeah, individual players could brag they had success. The Bucs? There was no confetti.

The Bucs were outcoached and outplayed in the first half which sealed their loss.

The second half comeback was something special. The fight was there after halftime. Where was it in the first half? Even with Tom Brady, you are playing with fire by playing bad half/good half football.

When looking back at this season, you can say that the Bucs never had full 60 minute games where all phases of the team played consistantly good football the entire game.

Coaching staff did a very bad job getting the team prepared to come out of the gate playing with fire. For a team with their players, they were playing from behind or gave up leads far too often against inferior teams.

This was a half empty/half full season.

I wish Bruce had not said “never second-guess” coaching decisions like the all-out blitz–that’s a recipe for not learning from mistakes. It’s clear there wasn’t time for the defense to all get ready to blitz so it was an error to call it, and Bruce has a habit of blaming player execution. To throw Lavonte under the bus was wrong.

  3. Daniel Says:

The coaching really seems to lack against the Saints and Rams for whatever reason. They coached circles around Andy Reid in the SB.

  4. Casual Observer Says:

The coaching, while good, needs some rethinking. The Darden experiment is over. Most fans recognize this – the coaches need to. Also, I think Smith is a bit overrated; overpaid anyway. And our pass D needs attention. That last long pass should never have happened. Our CBs are mediocre. Need new blood – via draft, FA, or trades. Lots for the coaches (new ones?) to contemplate – and act on.

We are in a good place when we are disappointed about not winning the SB….instead of a winning season…..we’ve come a long way.

    Thanks BA & Tom…..

Think about the teams the Bucs lost to, Saints, WFT, Rams. What do they have in common? An outstanding Dline. I am not sure who the Oline coach is but this seems to be a offensive scheme issue that the coaches have not fixed. All you BA fans out there, pre Brady, BA’s last 3 coaching years he went 2016 7-9 2017 8-8 2019 7-9 clearly he’s lost his edge.

  7. Buc1987 Says:

List is not a Bucs fan.

    Pay no mind.

  8. Anonymous Says:

The Dlines mentioned are awesome; ours may have been top in the league when healthy, and I just hope it is kept together. Some here undervalue mad man Jensen, and I think even Cappa has generally done well.

    Well said, Tampabaybucfan.

  10. Buccos Says:

One good thing… if Brady retires probably most of these Patriot fans on this site will leave. So there’s that.

  11. Listnfrmafar Says:

Buc1987, just stating the facts. Try researching it enlightens the mind, if it’s not beyond your capabilities.

  12. Robert Says:

They’ve got some work to do on the D line and a lot of work to do at corner. It’s not just about the injuries. Jamel Dean and SMB did not play well this season. Carlton Davis is good but not worth top corner money. It shows how elite the D line play was in the run to the super bowl last year.

  13. SaintsFan59 Says:

    WAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH…

  14. Listnfrmafar Says:

They did play well enough to win the NFC South unlike the Saints. The Bucs do share one thing with the Saints, they both got their arses kicked at home in the PO’s, but only one team won the SB. Suck on that Saints fan, and when Payton ditches your sorry arse organization those off seasons will get even longer.

  15. HC Grover Says:

W/O Brady we will be a below average team next year.

  16. Listnfrmafar Says:

But BC you have Arians, many on this site constantly post his ancient stats (pre Brady) believe he is the almighty himself. Good luck with that.

  17. Swampbuc Says:

Is BA ever going to address the fat elephant in the room? The abject failure of Todd’s Bowel, his ignorant gameplan and absolutely shocking and incompetent final play call.

I think I would have to fire his axe. I can’t take it.

Brady and the defense did all that to get them back into the game and almost guarantee overtime at least.

I can’t think about looking at the man again.

  18. Trophybuc Says:

How can this be a failure season? 3 wins from a 2nd SB in a row with
an injury riddled team. To go to the SB would’ve taken some great
play and good fortune. The Rams played as well as they could have
and we played one good half. However, this team could’ve quit. But,
they hustled their derriere off! The missed fg would’ve helped put
more pressure on LA. But, as I see it TBBs have no reason to hang
their heads. Most teams would’ve folded in the second half. You win
    as a team….lose as a team. 2022 let’s gooooo…..2 outta 3 ain’t bad!!

  19. Joe M Says:

Why isn’t Big Joe criticizing the terribly stupid defensive coordinator TB for his idiotic defensive planner just for the last game (no coverage on Cupp)
but the whole season. Hopefully some dumbass team will hire him as head coach and he gets the hell out of Tampa.

  20. CJBuc Says:

I am just glad somebdy used derriere

  21. Eric b Says:

They got out coached again, brady and co scracthed and clawed and did amazing comeback the stupidity to let them win at the last seconds boggles my mind. My heart still hurts and tb12 never ceases to amaze me. My family got together every game to watch the greatness!! We had this sb it sucks. We had that game won
