Highlights/Quotes From Tom Brady’s SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio Appearance (Part 1)

January 31st, 2022

Tom Brady was talking tonight.

As always, Joe shares Brady’s chatter during his weekly visit to SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio.

The good news is Brady says he’s not retired yet, but he also says he hasn’t decided if he’ll play in 2022.

Co-host Jim Gray asked Brady if anything changed since they talked last Monday night.

“It was a good week for me and I’m just still going through the process that I said I was going through,” Brady said of evaluating whether he’ll play in 2022. “So sometimes it takes some time to really evaluate how you feel and what you want to do. I think when the time’s right I’ll be ready to make a decision one way or another just like I said last week.”

Gray asked Brady if he was surprised by the endless reports of his retirement when he has yet to make a decision?

“(laughs) It’s a good line, you know,” Brady began. “‘I’m responsible for what I say and do and not responsible for what others say or do.’ So again, I think one thing I’ve learned about sports is you can control what you can control and, you know, and what you can’t you you leave to others. We’re in such an era of, you know, information and people want to be, you know, in front of the news often. and I totally understand that and understand that’s the environment we’re in. But I think for me, literally it’s day-to-day for me, trying to do the best I can every day and evaluate things as they come and try to make a great decision for me and my family.”

So is Brady retiring? Joe’s old enough to remember other superstars in many sports agonizing during the offseason and considering retirement. It’s really nothing unusual, except that it’s Brady and a bunch of big-name reporters say he’s done.

Joe’s not abandoning hope that Brady decides he’s skipping spring practices (like he did at times in New England) and will play in 2022, assuming the Bucs invest heavily in their offense.

Aside from the sweetness that was a Chiefs loss yesterday, hope is about all Bucs fans have right now.

  1. SB Says:

Like I have said before, I hope he feels so pissed off at those who sold him out and those that ran with the story ENDLESSLY for days that he decides to come back. F-Them!!!

  2. PassingThru Says:

Brady skipped the OTAs because of his wife, which is understandable as she’s a football window and independently wealthy. Many New England fans were agitated, but then it isn’t their marriage being put on hold for over half a season.

I still think Brady retires. I hope I’m wrong. Brady is mad that his retirement narrative was stolen, but is he mad enough to play for one more year out of spite? That seems like a stretch, but Brady does seem to love to prove everyone wrong.

  3. adam from ny Says:

i think he knows we can make a run at the title next year…

no football junky turns his back on that…

sure if you’re in, say…matt ryan’s shoes, maybe just call it a day, but there’s a run left here that tommy shouldn’t ignore…

  4. August 1976 Buc Says:

“It is not over u til its over” lololol
Credited to Yogi Berra, but who knows if he actually said it

But it is a perfect way to describe the Media generated Brady retirement Malestrom lol

So there is still “Joy in Buccaneerville”, because the mighty Brady has not struck out.

    To contnued??????????????

Whtever happens, I am Thankful that the GOAT came to the Bucs and they became relevent and World Champions again.

Some teams still have not won a Championship.

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  5. Buddha Says:

He’s probably pissed that we could have been playing the stinking Bengals in the super bowl, which is a relatively easy opponent one would think

  6. Jeffbuc Says:

SB that is what I have been telling my friends. He is wired different than other people. That is why he has been so great and so disciplined. That he may have planned on retiring. But since ESPN and every sight made a weekend spectacle of it. He says screw it I will make them look bad for trying to steal my announcement. And I will play next year just so they look bad. And they won’t be trusted again so next year they won’t leak anything in fear of looking dumb twice. He gets to walk away on his own terms on his announcement. He is just a different cat that little things like this will change his mind and give him ultimate motivation to go out on top. And make the announcement live as the confetti is falling. And say just so reporters don’t get it wrong I as a super bowl champ and making the announcement that was my last game. Seriously he is probably pissed right now that it leaked and is begging Giselle to give him one more year. I would t be surprised at all if evans and Godwin already got the text lace them up train hard were winning another one next year.

  7. SB Says:

I concur Jeffbuc. I just hope Giselle and the fam goes along with it.
If I were Brady, no Way would I retire now. As long as the Glazers promise to go ALL IN for next season, I would be back just to show people how Stupid they are for running with rumors just to make themselves look good!

  8. BucsFan81 Says:

I hope he does come back and if we have to mortgage the next 5 years just to try to win another super bowl next year with the goat it will be well worth it.

  9. T REX Says:

What a stupid reason to play…to get back at the media?

It would be a disaster because that really isn’t motivation.

WHen he said he was satisfied…something he’d never said before…that was a big tell IMHO

I see most folks are still in stage one

  10. Alanbucsfan Says:

“evaluate things as they come” –
Brady will consider the talent on the Bucs’ roster vs talent on another roster (49ers) vs retiring.
If he thinks he can compete for another SB , he’ll likely play.
    If not, he’ll probably retire.

  11. Ash Says:

He is retiring seems like he told his inner circle as much and someone leaked it out thinking he is coming back out of spite is just wishful thinking. Dont know what the bucs are going to look like next season but definitely glad Tom came for a couple seasons hopefully he made a lasting impression on the culture and we continue to have competing squads moving forward.

  12. Todd Says:

All I can say, Tom…if you’re reading this…that 8th finger of yours really looks lonely.

    Just sayin’.

    You’re incomplete, man.

    “Ain’t GREAT till EIGHT!”

  13. unbelievable Says:

I’d rather one more year with Brady and mortgage things even more, versus going into straight rebuild now. Reality is we’re prob gonna suck when he leaves, so let’s squeeze out one more year of respectability lol.

I mean who knows… maybe we somehow swing a Derek Carr or Jimmy G… maybe Kyle Trask shocks the world… but I’ve been a Bucs fan for too long to still expect those kinds of things to happen haha.

  14. TB12 Says:

Tom Brady wants to play his last year as a 49er. He is waiting to see what happens with Jimmy G probably in talks already. They Have a roster that can win a SB now and he’ll finish the team he always wanted to play for. He wants an 8th SB ring so he has no empty fingers. You know it annoys him when he takes those pictures and that one finger is still empty. It’s not symmetrical.

  15. Beeej Says:

Well he’d be stupid to retire before bonus day.

  16. Steven007 Says:

I think if Brady were married to a quote unquote normal woman, it would be a no-brainer for him given the way he says he feels and certainly his performance this year. As for the kids, he gets 6 months off with them every season. And what kid doesn’t want their dad playing football? I would have been beyond thrilled if my father were professional football player and I got to spend 6 months in the off-season with him. Outside of the wife, I think the family stuff is overrated. I do believe she’s pressuring him. But I really don’t understand why. She has her own life and they obviously have plenty of help with everything else so it’s not like she’s burdened with motherhood. And they get 6 months to do any couple related thing they want to. And select days during the season as well. Anyways, I missed tired as we all are of the conjecture. Hoping he makes a decision soon one way or the other so we can all move on.

  17. TheBradyBunch Says:

Guys, unfortunately he can’t say he is retiring right now because he has a $15M check waiting for him as long as he doesn’t quit right now. Simply a financial not to fess up right now.

  18. Jeffbuc Says:

Alan buc the 49rs traded away pics last year to get trey lance. They have no first round pick. He is under contract next year with the Bucs. He can’t weigh his options. For the 49rs to acquire Tom from us it would take multiple first round picks and 2nd and 3rd this year. Not going to happen.

Trex to say that is a stupid reason that he would do that just to spite media. He still 22 years later holds being a 6th round pick as a grudge. These guys to be this great are wired different than you can even imagine. He has eaten avocado and lettuce the last 22 years. No alcohol no fun just strict diet and game film. He is obsessed with being the best. And as minor as you think the media may be to him. They upstaged him. So he lost his retirement announcement to the media. So yes a guy like him will come back just for that reason to win against the media. They lose he wins that has been his life. Sounds petty to us but to him it rubs him worse than you finding out your wife cheated on you.

  19. TheBradyBunch Says:

    Financial decision

  20. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Jeffbuc-
Jimmy G and another starter/ high draft pick would do it if Brady wants it.

  21. Luke Says:

Yeah, I don’t get the whole “away from family” thing either. There are what……maybe 15 away games every year at the most? They don’t have to leave Florida to train so there is that also. What do the families of let’s say a famous rockstar or pop star do when their husband is away for months at a time do? There are many rockers that say they would drive their wives crazy if they were around constantly.

You have a finite time as a professional athlete, and a spouse should recognize that.

  22. unbelievable Says:

You guys are nuts if you think he sees his family a lot just because of home games / off-season.

  23. David Says:

I’m getting more and more optimistic that he’s going to come back and that part of the process is talking to some of the other players to see gauge if they’re coming back, namely Jensen and Godwin. Plus I think part of the process is slowly becoming to give a big middle finger to the media.

Hold up the Super Bowl trophy and say “now I am retired”
    😂

  24. Ash Says:

Playing another year Out of spite? He is not a child he is talking about family alot and talking about making decisions not based on himself he is done that’s basically saying he is retiring

  25. T REX Says:

@steven – what a horribly ignorant statement. You have no clue what goes into a regular season let alone the offseason.

Brady made waffles for his kids for the first time last week. Please read up on the life cycle of a football player. You are clueless

@jeff – another clueless post. Brady plays to win, not get back at the media. Another horrific post. Read more post less.

  26. Cobraboy Says:

I thought he already earned the $15 mil. It was just deferred. He gets it whether he comes back or not.

  27. Jeffbuc Says:

Ash you don’t become the greatest ever by thinking like everyone else. They showed up his retirement announcement. He is a winner he could easily get pissed and support I’m running it back. It’s far fetched for a normal every day Joe. But for a supreme athlete they use everything to gain an edge. I’m sure he has read a Joe bucs fan comment and used that as fuel. You guys are under estimating the way the greats are wired. Yeah just to spite the media could really be an option. He isn’t like Peyton Manning and lost a step. He is still playing at an all pro level and still has the desire. The media leaking could be the thing that tips the scale.

  28. MadMax Says:

He wants that 8th ring and he knows it….completes the 4 on each hand….but everything has to line up really good, of course like getting a healthy Godwin back…and maybe we find another FA WR for insurance or draft one….and this Bowles thing with some of his hard headed decision making that cost us the best comeback ever….im sure thats weighing heavy too.

  29. T REX Says:

IF…big if…we had won this year I definitely think he could persuade Giselle to go for the 3 peat.

Bucs staff laid an egg. Not sure Brady is a fan our staff

    Bowles is garbage.

  30. Steven007 Says:

Tyrannosaurus Rex, if you think you know any more about what goes on in season or offseason than I do that is just is ludicrous as you think I’m being. So Brady made waffles for his kids, which takes about 5 minutes. Do you really think that’s the first time that’s happened and that’s something like that is a significant decision maker for him? Reread that sentence that you wrote and you see how ridiculous that sounds. The man has had cumulatively 11 years off for his entire pro football career. Far more than me and probably you. And dude, they have people that cook for them. Yes I’m sure they try to do some of the things that most parents do but you’re being completely myopic.

  31. T REX Says:

@steven – can someone tell this bozo that football is a 365 day a year job. ANd Brady dedicated himself even more so. I absolutely know what goes on in season and the offseason. Do yourself a favor and bow out now.

  32. catcard202 Says:

From everything Brady said… All I read was a guy looking to play nice but not denying the leaked forthcoming retirement announcement was true…Totally kicked the can with his “day-to-day / going through the process” statement & will make a “great decision for him & his family”.

IE.. He’s not denying he’s retiring…He’s just smart enough to wait until he gets his roster bonus in FEB before calling it a career….Which would be a “Great Decision for himself & his family”, but no so great for the 2022 BUCS chances of chancing another SB.

But hey, who could blame him for waiting another week or so… until a big sack of Glazer’s loot was deposited in Gisele’s account… before hanging them up.

  33. Steven007 Says:

Rexy, “I absolutely knows what goes on in season and the off-season”, dude, that is patently false. How on earth would you know? The answer is you wouldn’t. You couldn’t. Reading books about football players and following blogs means nothing. And even if you yourself were an ex football player, which you weren’t, your experience would only count for you not anyone else. Talk about doing yourself a favor and bowing out! You’re embarrassing yourself rexy.

  34. Steven007 Says:

Also, prehistoric one, the narrative about football being a 365 day year job is not literal. Obviously. These guys take long vacations. Does that not count against the 365 days? Dude… Quit while you’re behind.

  35. Buczilla Says:

I’m over it and I can’t wait to hear Deckerhoff say, Trask with a laser to Godwin. Touchdown Tampa Bay!

  36. ModHairKen Says:

If he’s not retiring, then why did TB’s OWN COMPANY issue a tweet commending him on his admirable career?

  37. Pewter Power Says:

The shift is happening because all of the nfc quarterbacks are getting old. AFC now has the most young quarterbacks. Aaron rodgers would be crazy to leave the nfc if Brady retires. Russell Wilson has a crap defense and no one is worried about dak and the cowboys

  38. SB Says:

IF Any of you think Brady is wired like us then you need counseling.

  39. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

This is all a ruse the be the most epic SB commercial ever, just like the many commercials misinterpreting what he’s saying and it makes huge news and an entertaining hilarious commercial.

its all apart of TB12’s master plan

  40. SufferingSince76 Says:

It’s laughable how some of you speak as if you know what he wants, how he feels and what he’s going to decide. All you New England posters just can’t stand the fact he left your precious Pats and won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay. Don’t you have some snow to shovel?

  41. lambeau Says:

The leak makes sense if he’s showing Licht and the Glazers what it feels like not to meet his need for the team to be all in–did they go after OBJ? Can they rein in Bruce’s tantrums? Will they go after JuJu? They need to be on the phone with him. If he’s not negotiating, why this interminable fan dance?

  42. T REX Says:

@steven – I was around the team for a couple years. You couldn’t be more wrong and clueless. Read more post less.

  43. Steven007 Says:

Prehistoric one, oh really? Hahaha… Puh-leas…
