Byron Leftwich Gets Second Interview With Jaguars

January 24th, 2022

Byron Leftwich

The reports are flowing everywhere. Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich has a second interview tomorrow with the Jacksonville Jaguars for their vacant head coaching position.

Joe isn’t surprised. As of today, there are no reports of defensive coordinator Todd Bowles having a second interview lined up. Joe isn’t surprised by that, either.

Good luck, Byron!

    Awesome

  2. PassingThru Says:

If he gets hired, the Bucs get compensatory third-round picks in consecutive years.

  3. Marine Buc Says:

I’m happy for BL. I hope he gets the job. I also hope he doesn’t poach Chris Godwin from the Bucs. He can have ROJO. lol

The Jags have a crap load of cap space to spend…

  4. Buc4evr Says:

Go and take Bowles with you.

  5. Robert Says:

    please hire him

it must be pretty hard to make even the GOAT, TB look bad……..until he goes hurry up and calls the plays and things happen

hate to say it, but he is a HORRIBLE OC imo

  6. HC Grover Says:

    Fingers crossed.

  7. John Says:

Online was hurt. But play selection was shit. Basically abandoned the run after the first 3 plays. Tom runs offense anyway. Later dude. ✌🏻

  8. Dew Says:

Maybe Brady wants to know & have a role in picking a new OC before he decides to stay?

  9. Lesko_Brandon Says:

To the Jaguars, hiring Leftwich will be your best decision in your franchise. As an added bonus we will throw in Todd Bowles and Special Teams coach Armstrong with it. Buy 1 get 2 free. What a deal! Hurry up as other teams are eager to get him.

  10. alton d green Says:

If I was the owner, i would have been on a plane to Boston to give Josh McDaniels the key to the house. Now you can be blindfolded and throw a rock and hit a better DC than Todd Blows

  11. DrunkInYbor Says:

Good his game plan was horrible the last game. Still he’s one of our best IC ever! How much Arians helped I’m not sure. But Arians said there is a good possibility he call the plays next season. I would love live Love to see that

  12. HC Grover Says:

Brady should have the option to over rule the play call at any time he wants and call his own play. The starting game plan has led to too many slow starts.

  13. HC Grover Says:

Lesgo I would throw in Plan 9 from Outer Space and OJ for free with Darden as a ‘bonus’.

  14. Pickgrin Says:

I would rather BA be in charge of the play calling anyway – so hopefully this works out for his boy Leftwich. Win – Win

Well except for Byron who will almost certainly fail miserably trying to turn around that hopeless franchise……

  15. DBS Says:

Yes take your first play always run up the gut with you. And please please take Darden with you.

  16. Ed Says:

Good luck elsewhere Byron! Secure your family for life. Enjoy the promotion.

Meanwhile the Bucs can find an OC that can find the weakness of the opponent and attack it instead of running the same scheme game after game. Notice how the game started and Bucs ran right at Rams with Fournette picking up 2 big gains. They should have stayed with that plan. The passing game was off most of the first half.

His offense this year never had any consistancy. The Bucs were scoring points in bunches but against good defenses they struggled mightily because they couldn’t move out of the finesse offense to “pound the rock”.

The Niners and Rams is going to be the best game because both teams play hard-ass old school defense. I hope the Niners kick their asses again.

  17. MadMax Says:

Hire him please….we all know TB is the OC with most of the play calling!

  18. JimmyJack Says:

Jaguars dont sound like a great job to me. As young as Byron is I think its worth it to be picky which HC job he takes…….Then again maybe Byron thinks the Jags is a great situation.

  19. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Josh McDaniels should be made the highest paid OC in NFL on Tampa and Tom and Gronk will return with full control over the offense and BA can do his interviews and hands off stuff.

If Todd is able to get a HC, job there are many strong DC out there, just have pay them like a HC.

  20. ClodHopper Says:

I don’t dislike Byron but I like the possibility of BA calling plays.

  21. Ash Says:

It’s so crazy did he make perfect calls certainly not but no one does someone that people think is so incompetent was the oc of one of the best offenses in the league. I guess great oc’s are growing on trees we will just pluck one I guess lol crazy

  22. cmurda Says:

Any team that had Bowles on their short list watched with 35 seconds left then blitz then confusion then game over and quietly threw the paper with his name on it away.

  23. cmurda Says:

@Max. The problem is while that may be true none of us know if TB is actually returning. That one decision is either pretty much playoffs guaranteed or a rebuild. 2 completely opposite scenarios. I don’t care what B.A. says. If TB retires, it’s far from a reload. It’s a rebuild.

  24. JimmyJack Says:

The funny thing is if we lose Byron it wont cost us much short term because we dont lose the offense.

The problem is longterm and how we keep this offense together. I wouldnt put it past Bruce to stay longterm and keep this offense rolling. But thats no guarantee obvisously. So if you assume Bruce is out for longterm and assume we lose Byron the thought of keeping this offense starts looking bleak.

I really hope the Bucs have a longterm plan for this offense.

  25. Bellingham Bucs Fan Says:

I recommend him without reservation. Please consider Bowles for DC.

  26. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I wish him well, and one good thing is, Byron Leftwich is big enough to beat the ever loving sh!t out of Trent Baalke, if need be.
Remember, it was Trent Baalke who ran off Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco.

  27. alton d green Says:

If BL needs money for gas let me know

  28. David Says:

Good luck to him. I think it’s too early, he needs more experience but I hope it works out.
I really want to see Trevor Lawrence do well. The kid is one hell of a talent.

I hope Bowles stays. As much as people are complaining right now because of the all out blitz Call on that final play, the guy worked wonders this year with all the injuries that were sustained on the defensive side of the ball.
He’s a great defensive coach and it would be better for the Buccaneers if there wasn’t too much turnover.
The offense will stay relatively the same if Bruce calls the plays during the game

  29. Leda Says:

Bowles must be distracted by the job interviews. After a great comeback by the offense, like Brady did against the Falcons on SB, the defense came with a poor game plan on the final. Imagine the all efforts made going in vain …

  30. Jag fan Says:

If Brady retires Tampa Bay it ain’t going to be nothing

  31. Shark Coast Tactical Says:

There shouldn’t be interviews before the prospective coaches are finished. It’s horse spit woke ass malarkey. BL has had Jay miss and Brady. Of
Course he looks like he knows what he’s doing. Jay Miss was incredible bit a pick machine head case. Tom Brady is Tom Brady. Even my wife knows BL is amateur. Good luck BL. Make that coin, bank it, get ready for the fallout when ur record is trash.

  32. Bqen green Says:

He’s not a head coach. Hell we don’t even know if he’s a good coordinator. Brady essentially dismantled BAs offense, and installed the pats. Brady picks the plays he likes. All leftwich does is radio them in. By all accounts, he’s a gentleman and probably a great human being. That doesn’t mean I’d want him running my team

  33. ElioT Says:

BL might make a better HC than OC. Not for the Bucs though.

Name the last game he out-coached the comp…

  34. JimmyJack Says:

Ben if you were even close to accurate then we wouldnt see our slot WR being targeted deep over the middle like we have since Bruce got here. You dont sound like you know anything about Bruces offense.

Oh thats right you werent even here to see Bruces offense get installed. Youre just a frontrunner who followed Tom here for the ride.

  35. JimmyJack Says:

Eliot I dont know? The Eagles game.

  36. Ron Says:

**** Please…now if only we could get McDaniels to come in as OC…for a year…then kick Bruce Arian Nation out…then McDaniels can take over as HC. Running his offense with JMc would def lure Brady back.

Snatch up Edelman and Cordelle Patterson and keep Godwin..and get Scotty Miller more involved

  37. steele Says:

Isn’t McDaniels being groomed to be HC in NE? Not sure if he would do a sideways move. And I’m not sure if the old McDaniels playbook is an incentive for Brady.

  38. Jmarkbuc Says:

The only HC job Josh McDaniel’s will ever take is NE.

  39. JimmyJack Says:

Ron great plan. We spent 20 years in the cellar trying to build a front office who could deliver a Championship.

Now that we found it lets fire everybody and start from scratch.

  40. alaskabuc Says:

I am not sure I put a whole lot of stake in Leftwich having high statistically ranked offenses with Jameis or Brady. Our offense has been absolutely loaded with weapons for the last three years. Brady has traditionally been part of a lot of upper echelon offenses, and Jameis for all his mind numbing turnovers showed this year he can put up points regardless of the offense. That statistic is also skewed because in most of the games that we trailed and or lost we were forced to throw the ball. Maybe a bigger sign of offensive coaching prowess would be to lead the league in opening drives that end in a touchdown, or percentage of offensive possessions that end in a score. Maybe show an ability to scheme around your 4th, 5th and 6th options instead of every play running through a superstar that is drawing double coverage. Devise a pass protection plan for your 44 year old quarterback that is hiding behind a depleted o-line.
I seriously have zero clue how this guy gets so much credit. Licht has stacked up so much offensive talent that we win despite Byron’s ineptitude, not because of his intelligence.

  41. Anonymous Says:

I love how you people hate on Coach Leftwich. I wish him much success in Jax and while I look forward to him shutting the mouths of haters, he has nothing to prove to people who aren’t qualified to fetch his water. He has been a highly successful player and coach at the highest level while people who have never accomplished a fraction of what he has question his intelligence and competence. Arrogance and knows no bounds…

  42. HC Grover Says:

I bet both Bowles and BL get HC jobs. Just a hunch.

  43. HC Grover Says:

Call Dungy maybe he would be DC for Brady. I always liked him.

  44. August 1976 Buc Says:

Ron says **** Please…now if only we could get McDaniels to come in as OC…for a year…then kick Bruce Arian Nation out

Right kick out a proven winner BA, and sign a proven loser J Mc D as a head coach in Denver.

    BA 80–48–1 (.624)

    and Josh 11–17 (.393)

NO and again NO bad Idea.

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  45. Timbo Slice Says:

Honestly let’s just let Leftwitch walk. I have been consistently unimpressed by his strategy and willingness to adapt to the game. I have no idea what anyone sees in him. Let him go.

  46. Listnfrmafar Says:

August your comparing two seasons to BA career? How about you put up the numbers while McDaniels was a OC at NE versus Granpa piss pants? As far as BL, say goodbye to Lawrence’s career if he gets the Jags HC job?

  47. Listnfrmafar Says:

FYI August, pre Brady, BA’s last 3 years coaching he went 7-9, 8-8, 7-9. He’s done.

  48. tampabayallday Says:

PLEASE LEAVE! take Bowles with u! And the special teams coach too!

  49. Mike Johnson Says:

Unlike many here, I think Leftwich is a good fit for the Jags. That QB they have needs to be saved, He took a lot of punishment this past season. And he has the makings of being a good one. But just like jameis, he has no mentor. Good luck Byron.
